Title: Lau's Frostgrave thread - NEWEST MODEL: Captain and Man-at-arms
Post by: Lau on December 25, 2015, 02:50:43 PM
Around a half year ago I started looking into Frostgrave. I had gotten tired of warhammer endtimes, and with age of sigmar, the joy of the game disappeared completely. I started thinking about what i wanted in a miniature game, and my wish was simple: A small skirmish game, where your miniatures could have personality, and could advance. I dusted of my old Mordheim set, but quickly remembered why it had gathered dust all these years - it is a horrible and way to complex game, that is totally unbalanced. Then i stumled into Frostgrave, and fell in love! The game was simple, elegant and fun. The only problem was a lack of bance in the campaign system, but I agreed to overlook that flaw, and started to get my gaming group hooked. I looked trough my lead pile, and found some miniatures that should be fit for the game and cleansed them. Now is the long and busy road of painting ahead of me - and it is a slow one!

My warband before being stripped of paint:

Looking like a good start. It is an enticing game and well worth the investment. Enjoy!

My gaming group usually have a miniature gift exchange, where we paint miniatures for each other. A friend of mine painted me this ice giant, for Frostgrave! A really cool model!

I love the idea of a miniature gift exchange. It would help the less productive painters to reciprocate figures and help spread the love.
Our group is split between non painters and fairly prolific painters. I'd be happy to swap one of my er, creations (table top standard) with a new painters figure and I guess I'd be happy to trade up too (who wouldn't).

I cannot recomend it enough! I have been less productive for some time, but when you promise you would paint something for someone else, you have to do it, and then its easier to start on your own miniatures afterwards. And gifts are always nice. :-)

Cool mix of models. I like the thief quite a lot! Good job on the paint, though I wish you would give them a cool base soon. It makes models look that much nicer.

I know! I had that idea that i would get them all painted in a month, and then i could do the bases at the same time - it have been my pledge for the last couple of months, but I think I have to realize that 5 completely done models are better than ten not completely finished models :-)

I'm loving your old models, and wishing that I had the foresight to have bought them in the 90's so I didn't have to mortgage the house to buy them on eBay today...

How weird is that? I bought those exact same 2 pups to act as Warhounds in my Warband. Good choice methinks.

Yeah, they look very cool! I bought them for a Mordheim protject that never lived, and they have been in my lead pile since. I think they might be a tad to big for 29mm models, but they make up for it in looking awesome and ferocious! I think its some of the best dog models on the market - or at least i was 5 years ago when i bought them :-)

The dogs are from Reaper Miniatures. Oddly enough they have not yet made them a part of their Bones series. They are still really cheap though!

The elven swords is a good choice to show the magical nature of the imps.

I've stolen your ungor head on gnoblar body idea. Could however only find a single gnoblar in the bits box.

Another miniature finished! This time an armoured skeleton. Its an old model i painted 15 years ago, and have been lying around in my lead pile. I touched up the paint job, and found a new shield for him. I think the pike is supposed to be a banner, but I like it better as a pike.

Thanks! Yeah, the model looks very nice, even though the reaper bones cast dont have the sharpest details. The dangerous look and nice size more than makes up for it though (and the price ofcourse  ;) )

I will remember to crop the images more tight in the future. Thanks for the advice! It will sure make the models stand out more.

Finally back at the painting station. This time i repainted an old metal skeleton model. I think it's from an old GW command group. This time he is commanding to giant rats i also painted up. They are from warhammer Quest, and rebased on some small wooden bases i had lying around.

Im starting a bigger Frostgrave Campaign this sunday, and we will be starting be playing the mini-campaign The Hunt for The Golem together. For that I needed a golem, and I have finally painted one up. It will count as a large elemental if needed otherwise. The miniature is from the boeardgame Descent, and is kindly donated to me from a friend.

3 skeletons from HeroQuest, 2 have had their scythe heads replaced, since they have broken off. Very simple and quick paint job, but i think it works. They are obvioulsy formerly used as farmhands in the fields surrownding Feldstadt, but the magic that keeps them in line are long gone, and now they only seek to destrot that which lives!

I finally finished some animals to hunt in the frozen city. The white gorilla is a very large and cool model, from the Descent boardgame, repurposed for Frostgrave. The snow leopard is a reaper bone model, actually its a female lion, who got another paint job. i wuite liek the result, especially the unclosed spots look cool. The model kindda looks happy, instead of menacing, but it works. Both are nice bendable plastic models.

Next on my schedule was a skeleton drummer, to be used as a normal og armoured skeleton. Even though he have a chest plate, he could work fine as a normal skeleton. The model is an old GW skeleton command musician I have had lying around. I painted him back when I was twelve, bun now he have been stripped of the horrible paint job and given new life. I really like the model, even though the sculpt is bas in a lot of places - especially on the cape.

Thank you! I was considering using him as a bard in a tight spot, but i dont think im ever really gonna use a bard in the game, so he probably only gets monster duty - at least until i have made enough skeletons for a necromancer warband entirely filled with them :-)

Finally done with this great and nasty Giant Worm, which is a miniature from the board game Descent. I really like that its style stands out amongst other giant worms I have seen, and the human face makes i really creepy. Im finallt getting the hang on using GW's snow effect i think. smaller patches, that are flatter seems to be the key to making the melting effect look realistic!

Long time since my last update.

I have been playing some games, and its been great fun. I just started a Thaw campaign, with the new mission cards. And its just great fun. The cards are a perfect expansion! makes every game different!

My opponent have a bad habbit of casting control animal on my poor dogs, so now i have to add some new fighters, and retire them.

I have painted up a captain, that I want to use in the future, a cool evil looking guy from Reaper Bones. I also needed another man-at-arms to fill up the ranks. He is a mean looking knight in yellow, also from Reaper Bones.

Captain:
