Title: Isandlwana in 28mm
Post by: sjwalker51 on December 31, 2015, 09:04:01 AM
Couple of photos of the early stages of our holiday game...

850 Zulus, 220 plucky Brits and others on a 12' x6' table using the forthcoming 'Men Who Would Be Kings' rules (which coped admirably with a much larger scale game than it is intended for).

Played to a successful (for the Zulus, despite very heavy casualties) conclusion in a leisurely 5 hours - the 24th went down fighting, Durnford escaped, much fun was had.

Lovely looking game Simon, the Zulus look very intimidating out on the edge of the table ready to charge in. Lovely collection of figures must have been a pleasure to play with. :-*

Oh yeah!  :-* :-* :-*

EDIT: Forgot to add, there's something about epic scale Colonial games that is well, epic! :)

Perhaps it's the influence of the films Zulu etc?

Darrell.

Thanks all, one further view of the left horn approaching Durnford's command defending the donga. Apologies for all the tabletop clutter, the unit cards had all the key info on them, essential when most of us had never seen the rules before and the most experienced had only used them a couple of times - next time (and I'm sure there will be a 'next time') they won't really be needed, so the whole thing will look a bit more photogenic.

Must say I'm very impressed with the rules. The unit classification system allows you to represent so many different troop types accurately and with enough of a difference between them to make things interesting. Trouble is, it's now got me thinking about all the other 'small forces' (including FFL, German SW Africa etc) that are very manageable at this level.

We made a few minor tweaks to the rules for the specific scenario and they coped incredibly well with a game up scaled about 8x greater than its originally designed for: instead of 24pt starter forces (typically 40-50 Imperials and 90-100 natives), the forces in the game we played worked out at about 140 points of British troops taking on 260 points of Zulus.

Next step is to substitute stands of 3 or 4 15mm figures for each 28mm figure, maybe scale down the units slightly so a British Company would have 32 figures (8 stands) and a native unit would have 45-48 figures (12 stands), which should look good and play just the same...

Deedles, I think you'll find that MWWBK are an excellent set of rules for your planned Sudan games, when you're ready to get rolling some dice.

Great looking pics! That rule set sounds fun. When you substitute for the 15mm figures, are you going to change the range/movement measurements or play them as written?

Toom2, I'm planning to play the rules unchanged, as the footprint of a 32-figure unit in 15mm will be slightly larger than 8 28mm figures.

I've got the figures to play some test games set in the Sudan, but still haven't found a range for the AZW that really fits the bill: OG15 comes close but I'm really not sure about the look of the British infantry (the helmets just don't look right), there's no sign of Blue Moon adding to their initial launch and most of the older ranges are either lacking variety of poses or particular troop types.

The rules are great fun and needed no real changes to upscale to such a large game, and only a couple of minor tweaks to better represent the particular characteristics of the battle (for example, we downgraded the NNC more than usual, and added a scenario-specific reaction test for them to see what happened when Zulus first came within charge range).
