Title: Books on C18th/C19th smuggling?
Post by: Thunderchicken on January 01, 2016, 05:32:03 PM
Ok so I'm weak and it doesn't take much shiny to tempt me. The great posts on this board have inspired me to start a new project. Not a big project but enough to add some variety to the gaming calendar.

Being all sensible I'll do a tad of research first, so can anyone suggest good books on C18th/early C19th smuggling in southern England? I'm particularly interested in the cat and mouse games between smugglers/wreckers and Excise-men.

Ta.

Not sure about historical studies, but as far as literature goes, Jamaica Inn, Moofleet, and the Dr Syn novels are the staples of the genre  :)

Edit. That'd be Moonfleet, not MOOfleet. That's the one about sea-going cows  :D

This one should suffice:

Smuggling in the British Isles by Richard Platt.

Covers everything you need to know. :)

Thanks Gents. Very helpful as usual. Those figures look good.

I didn't want to say anything, I assumed you'd been at the sherry again.

This one has quite a few contemporary illustrations considering it's only 48 pages long ...

And of course the everyday story of sea-going cows is always well worth a read  lol

I also have The Cornish Smuggling Industry (bought at Jamaica Inn ;))

It's a good read and reference.

I had a couple of books on smugglers & highwaymen that I can't find at the moment to check the titles, but if you search on Abebooks for "Smugglers Highwaymen" it gives a few  results:
