I decided to start a thread for the various warbands i have for games like Song of Blades and Heroes, Dragon Rampant or Triumph, Tragedy and Trolls (my fantasy variant of Triumph and Tragedy).
The main problem most wargamers have is we start projects enthusiastically but often lose interest or move on to something else before we have enough painted miniatures for a game.
I get round this by only buying and painting about 10 or 15 figures first for small skirmish games like Song of Blades. If i am still enjoying it i expand the warband with variants to give me more possibilities in tactics (e.g. more miniatures with ranged weapons or cavalry) until i it reaches a size where with a few more miniatures i have enough for unit-sized skirmish games like Dragon Rampant or Saga.
This sometimes continues until i have enough miniatures for small army battles.
Anyway to start with i present my lesser greenskin warband.
It is a mix of older GW night goblins and gnoblars with some conversions. The squigs are sculpted out of greenstuff by me. (WIP on this thread here - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=66934.0)

For one moment I thought that this was a thread about the 100 Kingdoms' skirmish game. A really nice game that would had deserved better fate, let me say.
Anyway, neat looking minis here. Full of character, love them all. Your squigs look awesome, both on sculpting and painting. Very well done.
-
Everything about these is superb. Both the modelling and painting. The scratch built squids are great and the choice of figures for the riders and their posing make for some great models. Love the scenery these have been photographed against. :)
-
OUTSTANDING The Little Green Guys & their Squigs look TERRIFIC...BEAUTIFULLY modeled & painted. VERY WELL DONE!
-
These are great! I love the beasties - terrific sculpting!
-
What a great warband! :-*
I like the moodiness and atmosphere your colour choices give them. Great pictures too.
The squigs (both sculpting and painting) are magnificent!
The terrain looks good as well. (where is that ruined church in the background from?

Thanks all and i will definately be taking some more photos. Setting the scene to take photos is a new side to this hobby to me that i am really enjoying.
To tell the truth even after 30+ years i am still enjoying everything about this hobby (except maybe the temptation/lead mountain bit of it ;)). Every time i get inspired by a film/book/new released miniatures/magazine article/friends enthusiasm etc the fun starts.
Researching the new period, reading everything i can find, what minatures are there for the idea? what terrain or buildings shall i build? painting the figures, getting them on the table for the first time (and watching them rout back off the table :D) and now try to take some nice photos before the miniatures disappear into boxes to collect dust for years while i start on my next project.
Weird hobby!
-
Good man :D
cheers
James
-
These are just terrific! Everything everyone already said and more.
-
Just posting to say i have changed to thread title to "Skirmish Warbands" as i noticed that kaiser has a thread of the same name that has been running longer.
Here is a new pic for those of you checking the thread looking for something new ( dont want you to waste your time here do i?)
These are from my "Of Gods and Mortals" celtic warband but i have not had time to photo the rest yet. I used the Photoscape software to get the "magic glow" on the torc that the god Cernunnos is holding.

Brilliant stuff, Rob, both painting and pictures! :-*

Wow! Those goblins look great. Where did the goblins on foot with the face mask come from or are they conversions? Either way your paint job looks sweet.
Justin

Wow.... that is art !!!
Someone should hire you to do pics for their rules or something.. they look like they should be in Warhammer 3rd edition or something similar..

I have been wanting to do some more photos for this thread but had to wait until my goblin supply train was in the Lead Painters League.
The supply wagon is made up of bits i had laying around with a cover made of tissue paper painted with acrylics mixed with wood glue. The squig is one of my greenstuff sculps.

-
Great scenes :)
-
:o Wow. That looks just awesome!
-
simply lovely!
-
Thanks all.
I only need a couple of more figures to finish the goblins. For my Dragon Rampant games i will be using these trolls (reply 18) -http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=83555.15 with the goblins as "belicose foot".
At the moment i am painting a shaman night goblin who will be a "wizardling" and a few old dark/chaos dwarves as "elite or heavy foot".
-
:o Stunning
cheers,
Za
-
Sooo beautiful! :-*
-
Very Characterful.
-
How did you do the river? It is fantastic :-*
-
How did you do the river? It is fantastic :-*
Thanks.
The river is just painted and textured like the rest of the terrain but it is shaded darker the nearer it gets to the middle to make it look deeper. Afterwards i poured clear resin on top. I used epoxy resin from boat builders because it is a lot cheaper than those little pots you get from model shops.
-
I was told that this boat resin (btw, is it resin or varnish? I have heard both terms and now I'm a bit confused) has a lot of surface tension when it dries and that it could rip the paint beneath. Have you ever had any problems with this?
-

No problems at all. It is just a 2 part epoxy resin i had over after making a surf board.
I guess there are a lot of different types just like paints and glues and maybe some work better than others.

At last got round to photographing my elven nymphs. They are from Wargames Foundry and have been OOP for a while but i think the Foundry sister(?) company Warmonger Miniatures will be re-releasing them sometime soon.
Hell hath no fury....
The amazons teach some northern warriors a lesson in equality.

What you have created in scenery is among the best I have seen! It feels like taken from a fantasy movie that should be done!
-
Beautiful painting, scenes, and photography once again!

Very lovely. :-*

Yet another CINEMATIC moment, BEAUTIFULLY painted & staged. VERY WELL & IMAGINATIVELY DONE as always!

What a lovely set of pictures.

In order to keep things better organized i have decided to post my norse myth/bloodrage boardgame miniatures together with all my other 28mm fantasy stuff all on this thread, so further down are a few pictures that were posted a while ago on my other thread.
First up with some new miniatures (except for a couple from LPL) that are trolls from Ral Partha Europe and Artizen Design and some very old 25mm Citadel Miniatures. Originally Fantasy Tribes series gnolls led by Gnormen the gnoll. Later sold as goblins with Gilbert the goblin.
I must give credit where credit is due to Engel's wonderful "Treemoss Fantasy" thread that started me off on this norse myth trip - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=28923.0

Those Blood Rage miniatures look gorgeous :-*
-
WONDERFUL! I haven't seen those Old Citadel Tribes Folk in a VERY LONG time, AND never painted & displayed to the level of your BEAUTIFUL creations. OUTSTANDINGLY WELL DONE!
-
This thread is pure gold! :o
-
Spectacular stuff! It's great to see those old gnolls/great goblins painted up so well. And they do make perfect trolls.
-
Great miniatures, great painting, great photography!
:-*
-
Thanks all.
I think it is time i built some new terrain pieces and a new background picture to keep things interesting.
-
This is the Paul Bonner (fantastic artist) ogre from the Zombicide Black Plague board game. Really great miniature.
I have painted it as a troll with grey skin so that it matches up with the two trolls i already have from the Blood Rage kickstarter game.

Faun and fae
Another photo took outside. I went down to the river for a swim yesterday afternoon and decided to take these 2 figures with me with a bit of model long grass and a couple of bushes and see how it goes. The photo went well but the looks you get from people walking by made me realise what a nerd i still am :D

These are miniatures i painted (or re-painted) for "Of Gods and Mortals". Still have not played a game yet as i am waiting for Benbow to get his Norse finished ;)
Wrath of gods
Here the celtic gods Lugh of the long hand and Cernunnos are trying to settle a dispute while loudly being supported by their followers. Standing with Lugh are a druid and the hero Cu Chulainn. On the side of Cernunnos are a forest spirit lord and a witch on an undead troll.
Cernunnos,Cu Chulainn and the druid are from North Star Figures.
The witch on the troll and the forest spirit lord nearest the camera are from Hasslefree Miniatures.
Most of the others are from Wargames Foundry.

Luckly we have lakes just laying around in the landscape doing nothing. Anybody can take advantage of them.

Some more OGAM celtic myth.
In celtic legend there are many magic cauldrons. One of these had the power to bring dead warriors who were thrown in it back to life.
In Lloyd Alexanders "Chroncles of Prydain" Arawn, the death lord, uses it to create an army (Even in the crappy Disney version).
Undead celts converted out of plastic skeletons. Arawn is a plastic "collecting game" figure (D&D, mage knight?).

The Barbarian Warlord type resting on his weapon is from the Harlequin miniatures range.I think the larger one is a GW Wood Elf character.

I think this piece would work really well for the set too.

Wow. I fell in love with that first picture. I wish I could both paint and photograph that well!

Troll Druids
Have not posted for a while. Been lazy laying around in front of the TV or PC instead of doing something productive. Anyway, i have built a new terrain piece with some glowing dolmens and painted a few figures.
Trolls from Alternative Armies (Formorian heroes). The glowing dolmen stones are transparant plastic nuggets from a cheap home deco shop built into the terrain piece. It is lit from underneath by a €1 xmas tree lights.

The glowing stones look fantastic - very well done :-*
-
Once again, fantastic pictures, very atmospheric!
The minis are nice enough in themselves, but your photography skills are excellent. :D
-
Wow, lovely! Always nice to see better pictures of the AA stuff.
-
The terrain is WONDERFULLY IMAGINATIVE, & the miniatures are DELIGHTFUL characters. The two in combination make for an ENCHANTING scene. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
WOW! How the heck did I miss this thread? Stunning photos - beautiful themes, whimsical in a way that you don't often see wargaming miniatures. Looking forward to the next update!
-
Having stumbled upon this thread for the first time today, I have to say thank you.
This thread is a sublime and beautiful gift.
-
Very, very good pictures. I love the stories you tell with your miniatures, and you have a very interesting collection of figures, I think.
-
This is what the the dolmen terrain piece looks like by daylight with the lights turned off.
It is made of fairly strong polystyrene with the christmas tree light LED's pushed through holes in the material and pinned in place under the transparent plastic nuggets.

That's a genius idea! I think your on to something! There's some great potential there! Brilliant piece of terrain! :-*

That's a great piece and really doesn't look out of place 8) 8) 8)

Have you thought of painting or covering the clear stones so only the shape of the rune remains and glows?
I would expect a dark plastic covered in filler or green stuff would be opaque enough to hide the light without increasing the size of the stones too much.
You could then colour the 'clear' bit with translucent paint / ink to give different colours :o
-
As always a pleasure to behold. You've got a great skill at capturing an evocative atmosphere with your shots.
-
I don't know if I am more envious about your painting skills, your collection, or your scenery... :-*
I really wish I had the skills and patience to build superb terrain like that - I can paint fairly well when I take my time, and building a collection is a matter of chosing and buying the right minis - but terrain building will never really be my thing, I fear. Always another mini I'd rather paint than spend the time on scenery.... :?
-
Thanks a lot all.

I was thinking about doing it like that but it looked pretty good without the extra work so i left it like it was. I have a few of the plastic stones left so maybe i will try it out.

Your use of WONDERFUL miniatures & terrain to make FANTASTIC narrative photos to me is the height of the craft. INSPIRING AND VERY WELL DONE!

How did this thread get to 10 pages with me never seeing any of it.
This is wonderful.
Beautifull stuff all round.

Skirmish in the swamp
The Blood Moon goblin tribe meet up with stronger resistance than expected as they try to take control of the wetlands near their high moor homelands.
The goblins are mainly older GW night goblins with some conversions. The frogs are from Eureka Miniatures.

Just remembered that I have some of those frogs, stowed away in a box with pulp mins... :)

Marvellous! Love the stories these pictures paint.

Deep in the northern woods
Northern warriors clash with trolls in dark age Scandinavia.
28mm scale
Trolls from Ral Partha Europe and Artizen Design.
Dark age warriors from various manufactures (Artizen,Crusader,Foundry etc).
As my photography improves i am spending less time painting new miniatures and more time taking pictures at the moment, so that means the photos will be better but there will be less new miniatures being shown.
Good news - my lead mountain is growing a lot slower.
Bad news - i will be needing a bigger hard drive soon.

Agree !
The painting is good, but the pics are really great ! :-*
-
Thanks all.
Up to now all of my photos were only slightly improved (size, brightness and cropped) with Photoscape, an internet graphics editor you can download for free. It is easy to use and does a good job.
I bought Photoshop Elements 11 cheap on ebay a few weeks ago and (after watching a load of youtube tutorials) these "Deep in the northern woods" photos were the first i have used it on. No tricks yet (lots to learn) but controlling light and shadow with it is definately improving my pictures.
Still a long way to go before i am where i want to be but happy with the result.
When it comes to taking photos our hobby is still trailing behind compared to the photos from some other hobbys e.g.

Your photography skills are astounding buddy! :o I would love your skills at taking pics!
-
Wonderful. Simply wonderful. Like Brian Froud or Larry MacDougall paintings rendered in 3D!
-
Very nice.
For feedback the light effects in the first photo look a little artificial as they're the same brightness, similar distance apart, the same thickness and don't appear to go all the way to the ground. Still stunning, the bottom two are perfect (the first one is just almost perfect :P), better than anything I could do.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I thought the same. Although i was happy with the result, the longer i looked at it the more the rays of light disturbed me. I have modified them now. Is that better?

Yep.

Nice choice of colours you don't normally see.
The ghosts and the witches skin are really painted green/white but her dress in closer to black. The blue overlay i used to give a night look has made it more like purple.

How big is a giant?
A while ago someone posted the question on the fantasy board "Who makes 15mm scale dragons?". It was a wierd thing to ask because in my opinion dragons can usually be used in various scales. A small dragon miniature is young and a big one old or ancient.
I do the same with giants and i love this model. It is a 28mm (1:56) scale Forest Giant miniature from Fenryll Miniatures that i use in 15mm, 28mm and 54mm wargames. It was fun to paint.

Here it is together with 15mm barbarians from Copplestone Castings.

Are those Dacian heads on Frostgrave soldiers in the 28mm picture? I love the look, works so well with the fairy tale vibe overall.
-
Very well painted. And that last picture lol
I must say, I'm continually impressed with how you manage to tie so many figures of different scale and from different manufactures together so they look like they belong in the same fairy tale universe.
-
Painted that wood elf as a 40k Daemonhost myself. Nice job.
This whole thread is brilliant - love the giant!

Are those Dacian heads on Frostgrave soldiers in the 28mm picture? I love the look, works so well with the fairy tale vibe overall.
The 28mm warriors are a mix of 3 sprues. Frostgrave soldiers, Conquest Games medieval archers and Renedra foot sargents.

Some great work on this thread.
From Raising the Dead:
Ghosts are possibly from Ral Partha (not sure. Got them from a bring and buy).
It's a little hard to be sure due to the special effects and a truly crappy catalog photo at the manufacturer site, but I think those are Bob Murch's Illusionist Dream Warrior figs from RAFM:
http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RAF&Product_Code=RAF02008&Category_Code=rafboxgame
Lovely models, I've done a couple of sets of them myself.
OTOH, they might also be Clan War Void Guard, also sculpted by Bob Murch and in a very, very similar style.

Hmmm. Valiant Enterprises seems to have stopped producing Clan War models, as well as a number of Magnificent Ego pieces. Should've bought what I wanted when I had the chance.

that photo lol
It's been a long time since I've been visting this thread. Beautiful additions, Robert, I'm more than just impressed :-*
Great to see that giant painted. I've bought my copy about 15 years ago and he is still waiting for painting.
-
Well I hope you were a tasty treat.
Those are great pics. It looks suitably nasty against those 15mm. That's the great thing about monsters isn't it. They can suit a range of scales.
-
Sweet mama there's some great stuff in this thread, from beginning to end.

Will keep an eye on ebay but suspect prices will be daft.

The Boar Guys AND ESPECIALLY the Raiding Party are pure inspiration. Your BEAUTIFUL miniatures & terrain work perfectly together to create FANTASTIC narrative scenes. OUTSTANDINGLY WELL DONE!

Really atmospheric photos there; the scenery and figures work really well together. I really feel that I am looking at a photo of something that actually happened.
-
The photos look like they belong in a top quality set of rules or fantasy fiction!
-
That is just dripping atmosphere and the atmosphere is looking dripping wet, fantastic.
-
Wow. Just wow. I can only echo the praise. Love what you did here!

Yes, Love the atmosphere and superb painting.

The frogs were cool, but this guy is superb, and the setting perfect, looks like a still from a movie :-*
-
Oh what a lovely scenery! :o The model is simply great, but inside that pot it just looks like from a nice faery tale!
-
Fantastic painting, but your photography skills are truly amazing.
-
Brilliant. Fun character, great scene!
-
Yes, that image looks like a still from a 70's kids show, and I mean that in a terribly good way.
-
Great looking character!
He does what a normal cartographer does, but slow :)
-
What a great combination of figure, painting, and photography. I love seeing this kind of stuff. Excellent work all around.

This is the kind of work that's shown in magazines to draw people into the hobby. The photography is especially engrossing o_o

Beautifully done. Proper chaos dwarves too.

Great work. They're still my personal favourites for chaos dwarves.

Nice work. And the outside setting really brings them to life.
