Title: Looking for a finnish shaman in 28mm
Post by: Njall on January 03, 2016, 05:46:55 PM
Hello there (and an happy new wargaming year )

I'm honestly not sure if I should post that in the Fantasy or Medieval section :o

I remember some kind of viking skirmish game from several years ago where the player could choose to send his warband in Finland to recruit a shaman (or at least that's what I remember, I could be mistaken). And remembering that made me think that I could use such a miniature as a follower in my current medieval project.

So, keeping in mind that he's going to be with 28mm historical miniatures (Perry, Warlord, etc) .. what could you advise ?

Thanks by advance.

Well....the most typical equipment for a shaman from Finland and Northern Scandinavia would be the drum. I would therefore look for a medieval drummer and convert him. If you google search you can find images that could give you some guidance like this one from the 17th century:

Have you decided whether you want a Sámi or Finnish shaman/witch, there's a difference.

If Sámi shaman is the one you are after, just look for suitable Sámi miniature with a shamanistic drum.

There are plenty of sites with info on the Sámi drums and images those had on, e.g. this one came up after quick googling:

Then if you after a Finnish shaman/witch, lot depends on what era you want your shaman/witch to be from. For fantasy/iron age/viking age Kalevala type of magic user, one option could be the wizard types from the Frostgrave range:

There was this Frostgrave wizard (I think it was) which looked like a spitting image of Vainamoinen (or Santa...) to me, minus the hammer? Not sure if that's the look you want? And not sure how the match size-wize with your minis?

Footsore miniatures have an early saxon Wirgela/shaman which might be of use?
