Title: Justin's fantasy figures (Orcs and Goblins added 2-12-20)
Post by: Justin Buck on January 07, 2016, 08:44:13 PM
I've had this idea of a skirmish/dungeon craw/large battle idea kicking around in my head for a while.  I wanted some figures that I can use for skirmish games (like Mordheim, Frost Grave, or SobH) but can also do double duty in a dungeon setting.  I finally settled on Orcs and Goblins as my main villain, or misunderstood and downtrodden refugees depending on your point of view :)

The troll is from Ral Partha, the larger orcs are from Black Tree Design, the other orcs are from the old Warhammer fantasy regiment box from the 80's.  I swapped out the weapon with weapons from my bits box.  The heads are old GW plastic goblin heads with shaved down noses.  Some orcs from the Battlemasters game floating around in the group too.  There are some goblins from the fantasy regiment box (the ones with a bow), also a lot of goblins from Battlemasters.  I just swapped out some arms to add variety to a single pose figure.  I also painted up some Black Tree goblins, they are the old Harlequin miniatures.  To round out the hoard, I have some GW snotlings and some Alternative Armies goblins to act as lesser goblins.  I wanted to stay away from the green skin as that never made any sense to me.  If the are grown from fungus then wouldn't they be the color of mushrooms?  I for one have never seen a bright green mushroom.  I wanted them to look real, or real as orcs and goblins can be.

More pictures over at my site.  http://theparadeground.blogspot.com/ (http://theparadeground.blogspot.com/)   Let me know what you all think.

Your brown/redish orcs and gobelins are better than lot of green ones.
I love them.

Really nice skin tone. Love these old miniatures. Personally I would give the bases a dry brush and put some grass/tufts/flowers on them.

Cheers,

Their a delightful bunch... Good to see old minis brought to life like this and in an original and realistic looking paint scheme.

Thanks for the complements.  I would've put grass and plants on the bases but these guys have to pull double duty as the baddies in my dungeon games too.  I had to make a compromise with the bases, I think grass would've looked to out of place.

A great set of figures  8)

Maybe the odd weed or two, here and there might suffice?

Looking back at the pictures and thinking about it some more, I think you guys are right.  The bases need a little something "extra".  I like the weeds idea.  Unfortunately, I do not have any basing material that looks anything weed or dead like.  Everything I have is too green.  Do you all have any ideas?

Great looking Orcs! I like the skin colour.
For dead weeds, you could take your material that is closest in colour and once dry, either paint a wash over it, or drybrush it to the desired colour?
The alternative, of course, is mushrooms made from (plastic or metal) rod with a cap from sculpting putty.

I was planning to make some mushrooms that are free standing.  I don't want to put some on the base.  I might try to find some brownish ground cover and try to dry brush it a lighter brown.

These look really good! As to the bases, I think there's a good case to be made for keeping them simple. I know the fashion is for lots of detail, but I think that figures with very simple bases often look best in games. Aly Morrison (one of the best miniature painters ever, I think) said as much in a great article he did for White Dwarf in the 80s.

In the case of your orcs, I like the fact that their hide is quite similar to the earth tone - it gives them a "maggots of Ymir" feel - as if they've sprung up from the dirt. If you're doing opponents for them on the same sort of base, I'd wait to see how they all look together.

I like the headswaps and conversions too. I used some of the same heads on the Warhammer Regiment bodies (though without converting) a while back (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77384.0): they go on nicely! And, oddly enough, I've converted one of those Warhammer Quest orcs to hold a spear, though he's yet to be painted. Your conversion looks much more natural than mine though!

Anyway, that's a great-looking warband!

Hobgoblin, it was your figures that put the idea into my head.  I remember seeing your figures and thinking "I got those guys somewhere around here"  I thought I saved the picture of them but I couldn't find it and I forgot where I saw them.

Ah - I'd assumed it was "parallel evolution", as those heads fit so well with the bodies! Glad to see the trick being used so well here - it really livens up those old monopose orcs. And you've done a much better job than me at varying the weapons (I had no patience to carve away all those huge pommels!).

As an aside, I can't help noticing that your assembled horde is the perfect size for a Dragon Rampant warband - three 12-strong units of Light Foot, one with Mixed Weapons, (for a total of 14 points) plus an Elite Foot leader & guards (6) and either Bellicose or Heavy Foot (4) for the other large orcs.

Here are my adventurers that have responded...so far...to hunt the orcs and goblins.  With just the 5 of them they may have bitten off more than they can chew.

They are all Reaper miniatures and were a blast to paint.  I removed the bases and put them onto metal washers.  When ever I find out what I'm going to add to the orcs/goblins bases, these guys would get the same treatment.
C&C always welcome.  More pics at http://theparadeground.blogspot.com/ (http://theparadeground.blogspot.com/)

Here is a dwarf for another band of adventurers.  This group has more of a Viking influence than the others.  He is a Reaper Bones miniature.  Not too keen on the Bones figures, the price is great but they are too bendy for my liking.  Although, paint and varnish helped stiffen him up.  One thing I did learn is that you don't spray paint the base coat on.  It never dries but stays tacky.  The camera/lights are playing tricks cause the figure isn't that shiny.  Any C&C is welcome.

This guy has been done for about a week and I just got around to getting his pick taken today.  He is part of a package that I'm painting for Black Tree Designs to help add color to their mostly black and white ranges.  He was fun to paint and a nice change form my figures.  Any C&C is welcome.

Nice, the colour scheme on the steed is particularly good. And what a weird beast it is too, kind of a mix of dinosaur and the xenomorph from the "Alien" films.

The beast is wonderful. I like the completely different colours (top & bottom halves) but can't help but think its lower jaw should be brown not green.

Excellent work!
The last mini's mount reminds of a weird lizard/alien thing that I've got from the old Chronopia range.
Re: The bones mini being tacky, I haven't experienced it with bones stuff but I have with some old Mage Knight re-paints. I sort of stabilised them with some water based acrylic matt varnish. The tackyness ( is that a word) hasn't bled through and that was a while ago.

Just finished a male adventurer in a suit of armor (#8).  His armor looks similar to a female warrior (a few posts down) that I have already painted.  Maybe they were both sent by the same Lord to handle the "nasty business" of killing orcs and their like.

I was finally able to get some pics of my very small dungeon.  I'm using Hirst Arts cobblestone wall and cracked 1" floor tiles.  I have been looking at other people's dungeons and trying to find something that would work for me.  I decided to go with this style as I like the way it looks.  I plan to use these pieces for HeroQuest, Advanced HeroQuest, or any other dungeon crawling game.  This was the real reason why I wanted to start painting my orcs and goblins.

I just realized that I did not put the corner blocks in  :-[  I have painted some blocks to fit in the corners so the wall comes to a point.

This is what I would like to make eventually.

Now on tho the basing question... What do you all think looks good?  I plan to use the figures in the dungeon and also out in the open.  I'm leaning more towards the one with two toned green flock with a small plant/bush.  I can also add some of the same basing to the dungeon to tie them both together.

Now on tho the basing question... What do you all think looks good?  I plan to use the figures in the dungeon and also out in the open.  I'm leaning more towards the one with two toned green flock with a small plant/bush.  I can also add some of the same basing to the dungeon to tie them both together.

I would go for static grass or flocked bases, regardless of the dungeon crawl element to your play as I think that this would add more interest to the base. I get that it doesn't match the stone floor but I think that the bases would look acceptable in the dungeon with the foliage but bare and unfinished in any other situation.

Nice work!

Are you from VA Beach?  Its my hometown... though I live in Germany currently.

Thank you all for the compliments.

Mr.J, I'm also leaning towards the flocked basses.  I originally thought of just having the brown/dirt base but they look incomplete to me.  I also think that if I put some of the same flock in the dungeon it will not look too out of place.  My dungeon could use with some dirtying up  :D

Revfan, Yep I live in VA Beach.  Are you stationed in Germany or there for nonmilitary reasons?

Treebeard, I forgot what I drew the diagram on until after I posted the picture  ::)  Right after I posted the picture I was like, Well, we've gone too far to change it now  lol

I have to admit, it is very fun putting the plaster blocks together.  I guess all those years of playing with Lego paid off  :)

Here is a Reaper Bones Halfling Ranger.  I tried to keep his look similar to the Dwarf Ranger I had previously painted.  I also finally decided on a basing style for my adventurers and the orcs/goblins.  It looks good on a field or in a dungeon.  I have six goblins near the end of their painting, but they probably will not get finished for a day or two.

A little thread necromancy to show off..... my necromancer.  I recently received a box of Frostgrave Cultists and had to put some together for my necromancer.  He is made out of GW wizard bits plus a few extra things.  The hand holding the book was left off to ease painting.

I then put together some followers.  They are made up of Frostgrave, GW, and Victrix bits.  First is a skeleton and a zombie.  I picture them as movable shields for the wizard.

Up next are some cultist followers.  Sword and shield men.

Various bandits.

And some missile troops.

I just put together figures that I thought would look cool with no set of rules in mind.  Sorry for the blurry pics, they were taken with my phone ...

@ Kyusumu: I know what you mean.  They were the 1st fantasy figures I got.  My parents bought the fantasy regiment box and I split the box with my brother.  The way we played with those figures makes me cringe still today!  You can see some of the Orcs and Goblins a few posts up.

My knights just received some retainers to help them keep the Orcs and Goblins away.  I plan on having every knight have at least 2 or more retainers.  They are from Black Tree Designs and are some nice figures.

Really cool thread and collection you got there. Black Tree Designs figures are some of my favourites. Throughout all of their ranges I have yet to see an infantry model that isn't great (the WW2 guns are a bit wonky, but whatever).

Great photography too. Do you use the grass mat and bushes in the background and then have a model train background or just a background picture on your computer screen or something like that? Or do you have a full box setup with that background?

@Battle Brush Sigur, The background is a photo that I had printed off.  The base board is foam with a grass mat put on it and some bushes glued to the back edge.  Nothing fancy but it's better than pictures on my cutting board  :)

It's time that this slow/back burner project gets moved up to the front of the line.  I just finished some more humans for my low fantasy project.  They represent a Lord with his retinue, his brother and his followers, and the Lord's son.  They will join the other knights to fight a growing number of orcs and goblins, trolls, beastmen, undead, and other monsters.  They are Black Tree Design Normans, Crusaders, and a few early HYW, some Foundry, GW, and some Fireforge mixed in for good measure.  Hope you enjoy them.  Sorry for the quality of the pictures, still working the bugs out of my new camera.

Just finished some Orcs and Goblins for my slow building fantasy army.  I wanted to try and convey different tribes/clans coming together in one army.  After painting them I thought how to unify them.  I toyed with the idea of tattoos of face paint, but decided to go with red paint/blood on the helms/head.  This is how the Blood Helms were born.  I tried a new skin tone with the blue, I like how it turned out and will use it with my other Orcs.
They are a mixture of old Citadel, Ral Partha, Blacktree, and some conversions.  The last two goblins are made up of and old plastic Citadel goblin, with Frostgrave barbarian arms, and Warlord Orc heads.
Still trying to work out my camera, so sorry about the photos.

And right after I posted this I saw that I need to touch up the bases  >:(
