Title: Back of Beyond Bibliography?
Post by: Doctor Merkury on January 16, 2007, 01:48:59 PM
Anyone have a good list of sources for this period?  Especially looking for TO&Es of Russian, British, and Turkish forces for this period.

I do have:

Peter Hopkirk's "Setting the East Ablaze"
Charles Gallenkamp and Michael J. Novacek "Dragon Hunter"
Evan Mawdsley "Russian Civil War"

any more out there?

Thanks,
Doc

This post will be interesting but, If I could say sothing could you put the title in black (use tag ) with the writer name just after. It will be more simple to see the final books list.

Thanks

Stéphane

Edit: I've missing somthing, do not forget to indicate the language   and his true book's title in.

There is Corto Maltese in Siberia by Hugo Pratt. A graphical novel, you know, but quite good.

And there is My Life as an Explorer: The Great Adventurers Classic Memoir and other books by or about Sven Hedin, the man they called the last adventurer

There is a book in German - Von Kabul Nach Schanghai - which is the travel diary of German WW1 officer who travels from Turkey to Kabul to assess if the Afghans could be a useful ally against the British by opening up a new front against Turkey.

I'm also interested to know if there are books about British forces in Northeastern Persia during WW1 and the RCW era.  I have read snippets about these forces in Peter Hopkirk's book, but no information on numbers, troop types and equipment.

I have searched a bit about Ungern.

IMHO the best (available) books on the subject in english or in french are :
White Terror: Cossack Warlords of the Trans-Siberian, by Jamie Bisher
http://www.geocities.com/atamansemenov/
Expensive but very very interesting and informative about the RCW in the Far East, the pan-Mongolian movement, Semenov, Ungern...

le baron Ungern, khan des steppes, by Leonid Yuzefovich/Youzéfovitch
I've got the french translation, but unfortunately it has not been translated to english. Don't know about german.

Qui suis-je  ? Ungern; by Erik Sablé
For those who can read french. With a strong bias towards Ungern, who is depicted as a romantic and virtuous soldier in a time of barbarism. The truth must lie somewhere between. This book also focuses on the links between Ungern and the Lamaist religions.

There is this pair of books about a true story of a trip from Peking to Kashmir through Chinese Turkestan in 1935, without any visa.

Both protagonists (one reporter for The Times and the other for Le Petit Parisien) wrote down their story :
News from Tartary (courrier de tartarie), by Peter Fleming
Oasis interdites (forbidden journey), by Ella Maillart

Have not yet found the time to read them  :?

Wargames Illustrated 229 (Nov 2006) has an article about the Wagstaff mission in 1918. Quite detailed.

It also points to general Dunsterville's diary :

On Secret Service East of Constantinople by Peter Hopkirk.

Covers The Germans (Great Game) in Persia and Afganistan, The RCW period in Persia, Afgahanistan, Transcaspia, Eastern Turkey and the Caucasus and the British adventures (Great Game) including their agents. This also includes some interesting conflicts (ideal scenarios) with the Reds in the East.

Mission to Tashkent by Colonel FM Bailey CIE, again another great Game involving the British and the Russians.

May I also suggest Hunted Through Central Asia and The Journal of Paul Nazaroff both by Paul Nazaroff.

Good luck with your book collection and reading :)

Hopkirk's "on secret service east of constantinople" was also published as "Like Hidden Fire" and is a very, very good study of the efforts made during WW1 to stir up unrest in Persia and Afghanistan, the effect of the Russian revolution on the region and both the Dunsterville and Malleson interventions.

If you can find it, Uloth's "The 28th Light Cavalry in Eastern Persia and Russian Turkistan" covers the East Persia cordon (Seistan force) and parts of the Malleson mission from 1915 to 1919 (very old book though). The actions of the Seistan force during the period, intercepting turko-german spies with small forces of the 28th Lt Cav and the 19th Punjabis make for great skirmish scenarios.

The following is an excellent summary of the Malleson mission (1918-19) available onlinefrom the Conflict Studies Research Centre
http://www.defac.ac.uk/colleges/csrc/document-listings/caucasus/04%2802%29-MS.pdf

and this is a more wargamey site covering the same campaign
http://members.fortunecity.com/behindthelines/transcas.htm

Stuff covering Dunsterville etc tends to fall more into WW1 than BoB.

cheers
Steve

Hi, another book or two to add:

"Persian Expedition", The Australians in Dunsterforce 1918 by Alan Stewart; and

Tales os Sub-Lieutenant Ilyin by FF Raskolnikov - covers amongst other RCW areas -  and the capture by the Reds of Enzeli from the British.

God Bless

From the shelves:

"One-Arm Sutton" by FA Sutton himself. A cracking yarn if you can find it.

Just about anything by Peter Hopkirk will have something of relevance to the era.

Another vote for Peter Fleming's "News from Tartary".

Gallenkamp's Book is an excellent portrait of Andrews' expeditions into Mongolia in the 20s.  In addition to the text, there are some great fotos of the expedition vehicles that cry out to be modelled!

Doc,
You might look at The Great Race.  I don't recall the female author's name, but the book describes the round the world auto race from New York to Paris in 1910.  It covers the cross China and Russia portion very nicely.  A true story.

More Shanghai specific, but with a little of the Chinese civil war thrown in:

Empire Made Me: An Englishman Adrift in Shanghai by Robert Bickers

Good read.

The Legend of W.E. Fairbairn, Gentleman and Warrior: The Shanghai Years by Peter Robins

Very good read.

More general interest for the period, quite a bit of Turkey:

Gentleman Spies by John Fisher

And for the more fictional, but with some interesting Turkish scenarios in a WWI setting:

Greenmantle by John Buchan.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

I'd recommend these books:

The Spy Who Disappiared. Diary of a Secret Mission to Russian Central Asia in 1918 by Reginald Teague-Jones.
Operations in Persia 1914-1919 by F.J. Moberly
On Secret Patrol in High Asia by L.V.S. Blacker
Beyond the Frontiers (The Biography of Colonel F.M. Bailey) by Arthur Swinson

I'm a student and researcher and interested in Trans-Caspia theatre of the Russian Civil War. If the community would not mind, I could publish here translations of documents from Russian State Military Archive.

Well, the best I've seen is Jonathan Smele The Russian Revolution and Civil War 1917-1921: An Annotated Bibliography, just because it is a bibliography. I have a paperback, but it is free in the net (of course, if you don't mind using pirated books).

I am going down to the museum of the Royal Hampshire Regiment at the end of this month to look into that regiment's involvement in both Dunsterforce (very much BoB I would have thought) and the anti-Bolshevik operations around Archangel.   The regimental diaries should be interesting and I hope they also have some photographs.

While on holiday I bought in a charity shop "The Day We Almost Bombed Moscow" by Christopher Dobson and John Miller, which looks interesting but not yet read.

This sticky seems to have been quiet for a very long time, so here is a recommendation which may bring it back to life.

"Gone to Russia to Fight - The RAF in South Russia 1918- 1920" by John T Smith.  I got my copy on Kindle for less than £8, so am not sure if the paper version is in print.

Well worth a read, as it covers squadron operations by month, with extracts from squadron diaries, personal logs and participants' own accounts.  It is giving me a new appreciation for the DH9 and also has details of what the tanks were getting up to, including a British crewed Mark V involved in the White attack on Tsaritsin (i.e. Stalingrad), which was news to me.

Just received my copy of "With the Persian Expedition" via Amazon, thanks to a heads up on the BoB Facebook group.  Written by Maj. M Donohoe, who was a war correspondent at the start of the Great War, before volunteering to do his bit and becoming an intelligence officer with Dunsterforce.

Only a quick skim so far, but very impressed with what I have seen and looking forward to getting stuck in (which will be as soon as I have finished reading Ronald Sinclair's (aka Reginald Teague-Jones) "Adventures in Persia" and the Derek Robinson novel "A Splendid Little War", which is a fictionalised story of RAF support for the AFSR).
