Title: Colour Palette/Brand for Zulu Wars British Infantry
Post by: londoncalling on January 19, 2016, 03:22:29 PM
Any recommendations ? Typically I use GW and Vj, but will try anything I can get readily by post in the UK.

My real challenge will be getting the shading right on the tunics, as I am trying to avoid the dreaded pink highlights...

Many thanks..

Well have a look at the link above, if you like the red on the jackets then I list the VJ paints I used in the sixth post down.

Thanks for the quick reply and I like the solution. Starting off with a brown and working your way up the reds, rather than starting with a red!

Also looking for a good colour for the blue trousers and the martini henry...

Well my go to blue is Foundry 111 (I think it's Union blue), you buy the colour in three pots so no mixing required.
I tend to paint the white metal parts on weapons with a mix of black and silver, then wash that with strong tone and highlight that with straight silver GW will do.
The wooden parts of the weapon I paint with GW XV88 and then I mix XV88 with white and paint (very carefully) little stripes along the wood to give the impression of wood grain.
Hope this helps.
And the cavalry brown used in the red is in fact a dark red rather than brown (confusing isn't it) lol.

My GW red triad is currently

Doombull, mephiston, evil suns Scarlett

The trousers are just a dark blue with a red stripe (ESS)

Prepainted all the white webbing Dawnstone
the bread bag and helmet with Baneblade, up to white

Don't forget the rifles will still be in green with black belts and marines in a blue coat.... Really miss my Zulus british :( oh and sailors!!! And a Gardner gun.... And an artillery piece.... Hmmm think I might be doing a new project when I finish my Sudan stuff .

- Dark brown undercoat (Halfords 'camouflage brown')
- Base coat, GW 'Evil Sunz Scarlet' (yes really) cut with 10% black.
- First highlight, neat 'Evil Sunz'
- Second highlight, 'Evil Sunz cut with 20% Vallejo Model Color 'Deep Yellow'
- Final tippity-top highlight, as second highlight, but with a touch more yellow and a touch of white in the mix.

The trousers are VMC 'Dark Prussia Blue', cut with some black for the base coat, and cut with increasing (but very small) quantities of white for the highlights.

I'm sure both the red and the blue are too bright, but that's they way I like 'em  ;)

V nice figures Captain Blood. Hard to improve on those !

I agree with brighter colours as it makes the figures stand out more. I tend to use Halfords Matt black spray for undercoating which I think makes my figures darker (which was fine for my LOTR stuff).

What is the Halfords camo brown like ?

It sounds like it could be an easy way to spray up lots of Zulus and then add highlights etc ?

Yep. Very flat matt dark brown. I prefer it to black, and gives you a head start on some things like horses and Zulus!

The sash colour is a mix of red, maroon and purple. Can't quite remember now. But the sergeant's sash was more crimson than red at times, so you need to find something that stands out from the red tunic.
