Title: Squaring up with Mayhem?
Post by: Shaved Dwarf on January 27, 2016, 07:29:09 PM
I'm reading through the Mayhem rules but no matter how often I read the passage I'm still unsure about the meaning of "squaring up" (p. 5).

I think I understand that when my unit's base touches another unit's base in some angle, I have to stop and wheel my base around that corner of my front edge that touches the other unit's base.

[lift music]I'm drawing a sketch; I don't want this to fail because of me not being a native speaker.[/lift music]

So... does "squaring up" mean to stop after C or to stop after D?

My reading of it is 'D' - I'm sure somewhere Brent talks about squaring up conceptually, it's designed to keep everything as easy as possible. I play Mayhem a lot, and that's how I play it. It also leaves some interesting tactical choices as, in you diagram example, careful unit placement can help reveal an opponents flanks when he charges.

What you describe is as I read it: the technical description of the movement, how I understand it, ends at C, but the overall philosophy would mean to go on until D.

Thank you for your answer. (Though I have to admit I expected more answers after three days as lead adventure was the forum I got the most information about Mayhem when I searched the net prior to buying the rules.)

But your answer leads me to the next question:
Is there an upper limit to the lateral movement in D? There are other rules sets that say for similar situations the maximum movement allowed is half the base width. How do you handle this?

This might just be me now, but I move as much as necessary to square up - I see it as the last minute 'wheeling' of the two formation coming together to fight. Basically I always end up with units squared up.
