Title: Welcome to the apocalypse (TNT/TWD) - Prelude to Woodsbury 1 battle report
Post by: Illumini on January 27, 2016, 07:49:29 PM

I have been a fan of the post apocalyptic genre since I clocked countless hours in fallout 1. Since those good old days, more fallout games, Mad Max, stalker, metro, the road etc have pulled me in for more post apoc fun. And now, the time has finally come to move into post apoc tabletop gaming.

As I love the general theme of post apocalypse more than any particular universe, I am not restricting myself to only one canon universe. So this blog will feature gangs and miniatures inspired (or ripped straight out of) fallout, mad max, stalker, metro, resident evil, walking dead and more - all smashed into the same post apocalyptic wasteland.

Raider Warband "The Reavers"

In the wasteland, there are those that have food, shelter, water, gasoline.. and then there are those who take from the ones who have. Raiders! A staple of the post apoc genre, the sadistic raiders are not as well armed as most other warbands, but they make up for it in numbers and savage drug-fueled close combat prowess. These raiders are from the "Reaver" clan, one of many raider bands terrorizing the wasteland. Recently, rumours that someone is uniting the raiders of the wastelands have surfaced. The wastelanders can only hope that the rumours are false. Miniatures from em4 future skirmish range except for the guy with the chainsaw and the raider with an assault rifle. Both are from USX modern day heroes.

Some more raiders; the chain-axe guy will probably migrate to become part of a hillbilly cannibal raider family when I make more cannibals. He is made from a good mix of GW bits: militia, wytch, kroot, cadian, marauder horsemen.
The other four guys are EM4 future skirmish range. Very characterful minis, I hope they will make more, as many of the best are sold out everywhere.

And some raider light firesupport. Two em4 scavengers with some light ranged weaponry, SMG and rifle.
The guy in the middle is another cannibal made from IG, dark eldar, kroot and marauder bits.

The rabble of the wastelands are united by strength. Their leader, Humongous, rules the Reavers with an iron fist.

This band of psychopats, sadists and junkies run wild in the wastelands, raiding outposts and caravans, taking loot and slaves. Lacking in ranged and heavy equipment, they cannot challenge larger settlements, but with every raid, they grow stronger, and more miscreants of the wastelands find their way to join up with the great Humongous.

Humongous is a reaper fantasy figure orginally, given a diving helmet for that classic "giant post-apoc man" look and a heavy construction tool as a weapon. The weapon is made from a couple of chainswords and an IG autocannon.
I`ve tried NMM on these guys as well, but it is very hard, especially on smaller surfaces, and very especially on gold. Not sure I can be bothered to keep up the NMM on guys without much armor. On the guys with armor, I like the effect, if only because the look is closer to how metal is shown in the fallout games.

With the ruleset I have the most faith in at the moment, "This is not a test", this is a 400pts starting warband with a heavy melee focus.

Raider warband: The Reavers
Warlord "Humongous", chainblade, scrap armor
Raider Champion "Ironbar", shotgun
Broiler "Pyro", flamer
Wrecker "Cannibal Joe", chain-axe, revolver
Wrecker "jockstrap", 2x light weapon
Wrecker "Teddy", 2x light weapon
Wrecker "Geronimo", 2x light weapon
Wrecker "Poka Hunta", 2x light weapon
Wrecker "Motorhead", heavy weapon
Raider "Topknot", assault rifle

The Brotherhood of Steel

Power Armor is extremely sought after in the wastelands, and only one faction has access to more than the very rare example, the brotherhood of steel. Mostly pre-occupied with collecting old world relics for their own obscure purposes, very militaristic and willing to kill for a shiny pre-fall object, they are not particularly well liked in the wastelands. But when you have gatling lasers, super slegdes and fully functional power armor, you probably dont care too much. These guys are my first attempts at NMM armor. I am happy enough with the results to give it a go for the rest of my well-armored characters. The miniatures are from brother Vinni with a super slegde made from various GW bits.

Few in number, the brotherhood are still a force to be recconed with. With access to substantial numbers of working power armor suits and with an array of high powered weaponry, they make their mark on the wastelands. The brotherhood sends expeditions from their secret vaults into the settlements of the fallen world in search of more arcane technologic artifacts. Both raiders and settlers have fallen victim to brotherhood expeditions when unfortunate enough to get between them and their arcane price.

The zealousness of their search has created animosity against them in the wastelands. Merchants still trade with them, taking advantage of their technologic provess, but a brotherhood member can seldom walk in safety, as many gangs have bounties on brotherhood members. As such, any brotherhood expedition will have heavily armed knights to guard against both the critters and the humans of the wastelands.

With two gatling-laser armed knights and a super slegde wielding knight, the brotherhood is ready to make their might felt.

The OSL is not super awesome, but I felt it was good enough. I need to add some softer parts of the brotherhood as well, thinking some scouts and scribes to round out the group. These 3 guys are pretty much 400pts by themselves, and 3 guys is a bit small for a warband. You need some mooks to go scavenge while the big guys mow down the opposition

The wastelanders from New Hope

Lead by "The Chosen One", a resourceful stranger equipped with power armor  (BoS member doing double duty until the BoS crew are complete), a group of militia from New Hope venture out in the wastelands to secure their outposts and caravans from raider and critter attacks.

The close combat experts of the outfit. Alice has shown extreme skill with the knife from a young age and prefers stalking her prey silently, waiting for a perfect opportunity to end their miserable existence with her knives. The other close combat expert is a wasteland wanderer, known as "Gladiator", he thrives in the push, shove and gore of close combat. When not joining the militia for adventure in the wastelands, he participates in blood sports in New Hope and surrounding settlements. Alice is from USX modern day heroes, while the Gladiator is made from a mix of GW bits: marauder, knight, kroot, and greenstuff.

The other four members of this militia band are:
Slick, a low-life gangster renting out himself and his sawn-off as an escort in the wastelands. He is a reaper bones figure.
Frank, a veteran caravanner with a scoped rifle. He is a zombicide survivor miniature.
Vault Wendy wandered into New Hope one day, wearing a vault suit with "113" on the back and strapped with weapons. As a pretty blonde, she had to gain respect the hard way, by killing the first two sleazebags who tried something stupid. Now she is a valued member of the city militia, even if she will not tell where or what this Vault 113 is. Miniature is from USX modern day heroes.
Kane "The Champ" Savage is a militia lieutenant. A veteran caravanner and blood sport enthusiast, he can handle himself in both melee and a firefight. He is the current champion of the cage in New Hope, and wears the champion belt at all times. Miniature is a mix of GW bits: Marauder, IG command and a third party assault rifle.

This group is a 400pts Caravanner warband from "This is not a test"

Caravanner Warband "The Companions":
Trade Master "Chosen One", power armor, heavy weapon
Caravanner Lieutenant "Kane the Champ Savage", assault rifle, heavy weapon
Caravan Guard "Frank", sniper rifle, light weapon
Caravanner "Alice", 2x light weapon
Caravanner "Vault Wendy", 2x pistol, light weapon
Caravanner "Slick", shotgun
Brute "Gladiator", light weapon, heavymetal  armor, primitive shield

Unknown Military Stalkers

The last group to enter the wastelands are a mysterious group of military stalkers with unknown insignia, heavy hardware and professional tactics. With fully functional hazmat suits and modern assault rifles, these guys can search and scavenge areas where normal wastelanders can`t go for old world relics. The group operates with a shoot first, shoot after policy towards the barbarians of the wastelands (everyone not in their group). The miniatures are hasslefree hazmat troopers.

Those are Tehnolog (the company that makes robogear( modular buildings. They show up in some of their sets, but they are available  periodically from a russian ebay seller who I used to buy mecha from.  They have a similar clip attachment system as Hexagon, cyberclix, castlecraft, etc, though I don't know about compatibility.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/141818283795
Seems a bit expensive at $16 based on the picture (which seems to be made of 1 sprue), but you get 5 of the sprues, so it's not bad. You can also buy a "fat pack" of 60 sprues for $120.

I've bought a few things from this dealer in the past including the sci-fi tanks and was pleased with what I got.
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2015/02/six-dollar-tanks-from-russia.html

Also seems to be a viable source for the "chemical plant" kits that are hard to find in now in the west.

Thanks for the nice comments guys :D

@Deltadog: The gladiator is one of my favorites as well. He certainly has the most conversion work of the gang, and his shield was my first freehand attempt that I really like.

@zizi666: Ha! As awesome as a matching board would be, terrain is unfortunately the weakest part of my post apoc collection. Will probably be a while before that is fixed, making terrain is not my favorite pasttime  :D

Eilif and Redmao has it right on the ruins, they are from the russian ebayer. The options are a bit limited after a while, so I wouldn`t recommend the mega-pack, but for some nice, quick terrain that fits in several settings, a few sprues are worth it.

Valkyr Junkies

Drugs and alcohol are common in the wasteland, offering an escape from the horrors of the wasteland. However, a new mysterious drug has started to spread amongst the denizens of the wastelands. A drug like no other, "Valkyr", a glowing green substance that makes the user immensely stronger and faster than normal men, however, it also takes their mind. It has itīs name from the spectral creatures the users sometimes see in their drugged journey, the Valkyres. The Valkyre is a messenger of death, lifting the junkie up on black wings, telling them to kill indiscriminately while filling their mind with images of their own deaths.

After many incidents with Valkyr users suddenly leaping into dangerous fits of rage, sometimes killing all in the vicinity before disappearing from settlements, outposts and caravans, other times getting shot or stabbed to death, Valkyr has been outlawed in most settlements in the wastes.

Lately however, whole gangs of Valkyr addicts have formed, roaming the wastelands in search for the mythical source of the drug and any dose they can get their hands on.

Painted up some junkies, unfortunately not the greatest image, since there is practically no daylight here at the moment  :? More are on the production line, so better pictures will follow when the sun comes out :)

They are raiders, but can be used for the other groups as hired or forced junkies working as luggers or excavators. Made from WGF indians with survivor weapons and SOTR russian heads.
I like the realistic proportions, they fit very well with hasslefree and brother Vinnie miniatures. They are the skinniest of my figures, but I think it works when you think of them as junkies.

Got to play a couple games of TNT recently. My friend chose to take control of an Enclave patrol ready to bring back order and bring the wastelanders back under control of the government. I went with raiders.

Enclave Zeta Patrol
Lord Reclaimer, power armor, plasma rifle, light weapon, marksman, motivator, resourceful
3 Seekers, assault rifles, hazmat suits
2 Excavators, 2x light weapon, valkyr (berserker brew)
Heal-o-matic, clever, medic

The Reavers
Warlord, chainblade, light weapon, heavy armor, compound bow, psycho (berserker brew), motivator, strong point, spring heeled
Sawbones, rifle, medic
5 Wreckers, 2x light weapon, psycho
2 Wreckers, spear, psycho
Wrecker, heavy weapon, psycho

Rumours of a city buried under the sands of the wastelands have circulated in the wastelands for years. The wealth of relics from an entire unlooted pre-war city could make new kings and warlords in the wastes. Many loners and stalker groups have ventured out in search of this mythical city, few have returned, and over the years, more and more people thought it was merely a myth.

It was only very recently, after a duststorm raging for weeks that the myth was proven to be true. The immense winds moved the desert and uncovered large parts of the buried city. The jagged skyscrapers could be seen miles away. The jagged buildings worked as beacons on the factions of the wastes. Raiders, stalkers, the brotherhood and more have started the perilous journey into the wastes in search for riches and power.

And from the safety of an underground bunker, a new faction decided it was time to rise, the Enclave. The relics of the past could not be trusted to the miscreants above. Heavily armed, a patrol has made their way into the city to find and secure relics.

An army research office in the outskirts of the buried city is their primary target. However, another group has also made it to the city, raiders.

The field:
The raiders deployed first and took advantage of their large numbers to threaten all three sides of the field. The enclave deployed together near the red building.

The raiders quickly moved up the field and got in position to take four of the objectives. The enclave moved up more timidly.

Under the influence of psycho, Motorhead, the wrecker with a heavy weapon, went into a rage when he spotted the cowardly enemy. He charged straight at them, revving his chainsaw and screaming obscenities. As he vaulted a trashed car, he stopped and screamed at his enemy. Perturbed, the Enclave soliders hesitated for a few seconds before reverting to their training and gunning the lunatic down.

His sacrifice did slow the Enclave patrol down however, and the raiders grab 4 pieces of pre-war tech while under fire. Fearing that the relics will go into the hands of savages, the Enclave leader sends his Valkyr junkies into the office building to fight bloody hand to hand combat with the raiders. The fighting is brutal, but it gives the Enclave enough breathing room to go for a relic. The Enclave commander also gets in position to defend the eyebot that unfortunately had a malfunction just as it reached the relic.

While the junkies fight for their lives, the seekers fire into the swirling melee, luckily managing to take out a raider and no junkies.

Below the Enclave commander, his Valkyr junkies are outnumbered and outmatched by the raider horde. The warlord himself smashes one of the junkies into a wall and roars a challenge to the power armored man. Two raiders even scale the floor and assault the commander himself.

The commander fights the raider savages with his bare knuckles while his seekers move away from the screaming psychoīs coming closer and closer. Jamming weapons at the wrong time allows the raider leader to catch one of them, sawing the man in two.

It looks dark for the Enclave patrol, but their tactical training allows them to fight on, and when the raider warlord goes down under a hail of lead, the tide turns. The commander powers through the two raiders assaulting him, the eyebot comes back online, and from a high vantage point, the seeker sergeant manages to keep the raiders of his buddy at the ground.

Their numbers quickly dwindling and with 5 out of 6 pre-war items in their possession, the raiders go on the defensive, going prone and hiding from the superior firepower of the Enclave patrol. The patrol takes advantage of the pause in the fighting to pull out of the sticky situation with their one pre-war item and their casualties, leaving the field to the raiders.

It ended in a raider win, although the Enclave turned the game around from the very bleak start, the raiderīs ability to quickly grab VP locations sealed the deal.

However, when you look at the casualties, it is less clear who really won  :)

The Enclave manages to find a working set of power armor and a lot of cash. One seeker dies, sawed in half by the raider warlord, while both junkies make it. With the money made, the Enclave buy an arbitrator and LMG to step into their new power armor and bring in a new seeker.

Two raiders die from their wounds. With the funds gained from selling off the pre-war items, the raiders also buy a heavy weapons trooper. This guy gets a rocket launcher and combat armor, ready to hunt power armored enemies. They also hire a raider with a rifle and a new wrecker.

@Mr. Peabody: Thanks! The terrain will only improve in the near(ish) future. I`ve ordered a lot of high quality buildings so I can phase out the GW buildings in favor of more realistic ones.

@Mac Finn: Thanks, I`ve got another AAR planned, just gotta find the time ;D

@General M@yhem: Thanks. The rules are very good, easy to learn and play and with seemingly a lot of depth. Easily worth the price IMO. The brotherhood figs are from brother Vinni: http://www.brother-vinni.com/shop.htm#!/Nuclear-sandlot/c/5965003/offset=0&sort=normal (http://www.brother-vinni.com/shop.htm#!/Nuclear-sandlot/c/5965003/offset=0&sort=normal) The quality of his miniatures is outstanding.

It is MDF terrain from Poland. I will wait until I have actually received the terrain before praising it. At the moment, it is radio silence from the store, so unless I get an answer during this week, the purchase might be off  >:(

The Plasticville terrain is unfortunately not very accessible in Europe. Shipping cost of 50 dollars for a single building make it a non-option pretty quickly.

there's a listing on Amazon.co.uk, but prices are steep and they don't ship to Belgium...

Too bad, with shipping and possibly import taxes & customs handling fees buying from the US is out of my price range.

Hear, hear!
I've bought my fair share of models and kits in the states, but when they tripled postage costs to EU some years ago that was the end of it  :'(

Painted up some of the less friendly denizens of the wastes.

The Raddag
A hideously mutated dog or wolf. Itīs bones protrude out of itīs skin, sometimes forming an exo-skeleton, other times as spikes. The bones continue to grow, and the larger male raddags will usually have impressive racks of spiky bones and considerable amounts of exo-skeleton. Raddags are big creatures, standing almost shoulder level with normal men when on all fours. They have been known to crush steel with their jaws. Their one weakness is that they often have exposed areas on their body that are not even covered with skin. Some brave raiders and tribals sometimes manage to capture and "train" raddags.

A few brave raiders and tribals have managed to capture and "train" raddags. They are used as highly effective shock troops, spreading terror in the enemy as they are let loose and the limbs fly.

Supermutant

Another Fallout fan favorite. I will use him as Mutant Horror with the Big mutant and long arms mutations, making him a suitable scary wasteland encounter. The model was a pain to photograph, so these pics will have to do for now. He looks better live than on the pics. Iīll make him a twin brother eventually, hopefully with a minigun if I can brave that conversion  :D

I`ve also painted up the shed in the pic where the super mutant is about to make paste out of a couple of junkie raiders. One small step towards new and improved post apoc terrain  :)

Thanks carlos13th  :)

Currently working on upgrading from 40k terrain to proper post apoc terrain. My original large order has still not arrived, but at least I got notice that it was finally shipped this week.

I ordered some scatter terrain and a gas station while waiting for my big haul of buildings. I have knocked out a couple of refuse bins and a fence. I will make some garbage for the bins some time in the future  :D

I really like these kits, good price, good shipping price and time to Europe and great quality. Lots of different kits available here http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ssn=thetrolltrader&item=351506333946&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xscenics.TRS0&_nkw=scenics&_sacat=0 (http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ssn=thetrolltrader&item=351506333946&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xscenics.TRS0&_nkw=scenics&_sacat=0)

Long time no see, as my hobby time has been mainly routed towards a Kislev army.
I have started a new blog so I can collect all my various hobbying in the same place: https://mandollies.com (https://mandollies.com)

Although the blog is mainly Kislev for now, I have recently painted up a bunch of zombies, and there are also quite a few new post-apoc characters on the way, so there will be more post-apoc posts coming up. Check out the zombies and some post-apocified zombicide survivors here: https://mandollies.com/2016/11/21/zombicide-survivors-and-horde/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/11/21/zombicide-survivors-and-horde/)

Got a very good deal on walking dead sets for black friday, so I painted up Brian and some zombies to give the game a run. Nice AAR. That is a nice board.

The Prelude to Woodbury set is a nice introduction to the rules but like the main rules does expect the players to come up with the scenarios beyond the limited ones (just a few more would be nice - as much as examples of how to create further scenarios).

Thanks. I certainly will come up with more scenarios, I am planning to run a co-op campaign with various friends that will include base building, environmental effects and NPCs. But as you say, would be nice to have more scenarios to build on, and NPC handling for example I will have to come up with my own system. I guess the scenarios in the expansions can be used as inspiration as well though.

There are a couple of scenarios that were provided to the Beasts of War guys that they made battle reports of. Here are the links:
