Title: Shed Wars ECW - more figures painted (8/3/17)
Post by: Eric the Shed on January 29, 2016, 10:34:59 AM
Hi Folks

Work and Domestics have prevented me from being active for the past month but I have been busy building my latest project - the English Civil War.

I 'll keep an update here on this thread but most of the work will be reported on the blog.

As of today I have finally assembled the hundreds of plastic Warlord ECW troops and the long, but hopefully fun job of painting this lot starts from today. I have set myself the goal of finishing this by the end of June. Wish me luck.

I would need years to even assemble that amount of plastic. Painting it we would be talking decades.

Best of luck to both you and your sanity.

The ECW is a great period to play as you can go with big blocks of figures down to small groups of skirmishers and everything in between. They're a little larger than Warlord but Bicorne do some lovely character figures.

You're going to need a bigger shed soon!

Cheers Guys...I'll keep progress posted

The rest of the guns, gun crew and mounted officers arrived today.

Just waiting on some Currassiers and the Army will be complete.

Off to do some painting !! ;D

I reckon each regiment took 2-3 hours. I cheated somewhat by doing all 60 horses, tack etc in one sitting of about 4 hours. Add another hour for all the bases.

The riders only 12 of them in each unit took a couple of hours...that's 10 minutes per figure

Please note that this does not include assembly, adding grit to base or priming. I did all the figures in one go for this stage.

I am tackling the infantry by regiment ...40 figures at a time. I'll time the process and feed back on the blog and here

I can report steady progress on the ECW Army - 200 of the 280 core infantry now painted, dipped and varnished - the rest almost done...

A bigger update report on the blog

Some of the many painted footsoldiers

Hopefully get the rest done this weekend

You're a one man sweatshop Giles! It's a much underrated period and nice to see it getting the Shed treatment. Did you check out the Bicorne character figures? They may well be too large for Warlord but they are very nice.

Not a period of interest - tried it once and painted some stuff but didn't work for me - but your productivity is inspiring.  It's all a matter of well organized assembly line processes.  Once upon a time I could put out 250 painted and textured based figures in a month or less.  Hope to return to such levels soon now that so many worldly distractions have faded into the background.  Keep inspiring me (or is that shaming me?)

Go, man, go!   :-*

Great work.
It should be inspiring to all of us that you can paint so many figures.
You have inspired me to kick in painting my AWI project.
Don't know if I can match your output.
But 30 figures a week is my goal.
That would be 300 painted in 10 weeks.

Are you going to extend the size of the table further or is the new area just to house your collection?

The plan (which is constantly changing) will be to have two tables. The largest will be 5ft x 15ft (similar to current one) - the second will be smaller at 4ft x 6ft.

Most of the new space will be dedicated to storage :D

Hopefully I'll get the concrete base done in next month - Ill then assemble the new shed butted up to the old before I cut through.

With a bit of fortune this should all be done by BLAM ! (as I said it is a plan, and Mrs Shed has signed off on the idea). The only stumbling block is the cash ! About £2k   >:(

and before you ask it is NOT the Thursday excursion

F@#king hell! How did you manage to paint them sooo quickly! :o Have you trained your cat to help?

a minimum od one hour a day - most times before I start work

Maybe the idea is that the family move into the Shed and Giles' wargames stuff moves into the house!

Wow.  Impressive progress.

On the bases, will you leave the outer lips brown or are you going to try and blend them with a green coloration?  While they look kind of cool as display bases I suspect they look better on table with green - just a thought.  Or maybe they are just for storage and not movement trays?

One hour a day of dedication gets allows amazing progress.  The challenge for most of us is the discipline of keeping up that hour a day.

Both Parliamentarian (mine on left) and Royalist forces (my mate Mark's) go on the table - over 1000 x 28mm figures!

The table is NOT big enough

We'll be taking close up shots of the forces as they go head to head in May

You can follow progress on the blog - latest post just features this picture and storage

Finished painting all the troops at the weekend....

29th January looked like this...

21st March looked like this

Just got to finish basing and add flags...

If anybody asks that works out at 7.5 minis painted per day...

Cheers

Absolutely fantastic work, sir! 7.5 minis a day is a phenomenal work rate. Good luck with the new shed, will you be known as "Two Sheds" in future? My first real wargames army was ECW (Royalist of course, though), 25mm Minifigs, back in the '70s. I've still got boxes of them in the roof.

Looking forward to seeing the battle reports soon.  :-*

I think the new expansion of the shed is just to house the chained up painting slaves.

Chained ud painting slaves is the only reasonable explanation to such a massive output.

Sadly there is not enough room and I'd be breaking a lot of rules letting people live in my shed...what would the neighbours say
