Title: Flint & Feather 28mm Huron/Iroquois...Painted and Reviewed UPDATED 4th FEB
Post by: Jacksarge on February 03, 2016, 05:36:41 AM
I was fortunate enough to be sent some figures sculpted by the very talented Bob Murch of Pulp Figures fame. My friend Barrie wanted me to paint up some of Mr Murch's new 28mm "Flint and Feather" Huron and Iroquois: http://www.cruciblecrush.com/flint-feather/

I can honestly say that these are some of the finest 28mm sculpts that I have ever had the opportunity to paint. I have painted a number of figures from the Pulp Figures range and they were great fun, but these woodland indians are just superb. They are clean casts with excellent detail, well proportioned, and dynamically posed. The larger areas of flesh gave me scope to paint tattoos and warpaint in natural earthy colours. The figures themselves are designed to represent "Iroquois/Haudenosaunee & Huron/Wendat Miniatures from the Legendary Pre-Contact Era" - so before the arrival of European settlers. I believe that there is a game system devised for the figures which pits them against other native peoples and legendary creatures. Even though there is not a musket in sight, I think they would mix in with other ranges for The French Indian Wars, or you could use them as Skraelings for Saga. I understand Bob Murch will be expanding the range over time as this "period" is something of a passion of his. Sorry if this is all "old news" to some of you, I just wanted to provide an overview for folks who hadn't encountered them. :)

The pictures I'm sharing are of the first half dozen that I painted up and took some "proper" photos, and the next six that are still on their painting stands.
With the second batch I went for even more dramatic warpaint to give some variation.

Super painting.
Love them.
I have ordered some and am waiting for them to come.
I think they will go to the top of the line to be painted.
Thanks for sharing.

HEY! That's what I am painting right now. Just took a break after applying the flesh to go online and look at Bob's painted versions to double-check the color on the splinted armor. What a coincidence! Yours look wonderful and the "earthy" palette fits them perfectly! I only hope my job on them is a nice as yours!

Keep us posted as you paint up more...I'm loving these! Oh, by the way, you could also use my own Song of Drums and Tomahawks rules for skirmishes with these lovely figures. If you want some shamans and creatures and a pinch of magic, it would be a snap to mix in rules from the Fantasy version, Song of Blades and Heroes.

Thanks Mike. Yes the pictures on Bob's website were a big inspiration for mine too- that PDF of his is a very useful guide. The limited colour palette is fairly important- unless you are placing them in an all out fantasy setting where anything goes :)
Unlike the Woodland Indians of the FIW, these braves didn't have access to European dyes and fabrics.

I have taken some more pictures, just need to get 'em uploaded to the blog.

Cheers,
John.

Here's some pictures of the Flint & Feather 28mm Huron/Iroquois that were on the painting stands in the last post, but are now finished.

These sculpts are so cool & great fun to paint.

Those are amazing! My favorite is the guy with the wolf headdress. That is one awesome pose.

Hey...I checked the Crucible Crush website and didn't see anything about a painting guide PDF. Was that from a thread on here? Is it something you could share if I sent you my email address?

Fantastic stuff...!

The guy in black and white war paint is stunning .
I also like the ones with the muted earthly war paint further down,And the sculpts are very nice theirselves.
