Title: Diablo Jon's - Diablo Crusade 40K Project (more plague marines )
Post by: Diablo Jon on February 03, 2016, 07:51:26 PM
Hi Guys,
long term lurker who has finally joined up really impressed by the great stuff people post up and thought I'd add my own humble efforts by way of an introduction.

I took stock of all my half done projects last Christmas/new year (don't we all :) ) and realised I had a lot half finished things knocking about the man cave. this realization has been coupled with a re-igniting of my interest in the 40k background so I decide to try and finish up a few 40K armies I've had knocking about. Then I decided to go a bit further and set up a blog and make an attempt to flesh out the background for the armies as I painted them. In the end I've ended up with a project I've called the Diablo Crusade.

Thought I'd run this thread alongside my blog. First up some random musings on what I'm trying to achieve for those interested

https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2016/01/15/2/ (https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2016/01/15/2/)

then a bit of back ground fluff for the Diablo Crusade

https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2016/01/15/the-diablos-crusade-a-history/ (https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2016/01/15/the-diablos-crusade-a-history/)

My first army that is coming to completion is the 888th Khorne's Own Traitor Guard

First some back ground fluff and an army list for those interested in such things

erm yes there may be a touch of Blood Pact in there.................but I guess that's what you get for being the poster boys for non-Marine Chaos in the universe.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that :D

Cool, it all looks the part.  Looks like some of the old Wargames Factory troopers would fit in with your aesthetic.

Yeah I always quite liked the Wargames Factory shock troops I was hoping to use them as a "not Death Korps of Krieg" army (with some weapon swaps). Problem is those miniatures have become quite hard to get hold of now since Wargames Factory got in to bed with Warlord Games. Hopefully Warlord will re-release them at some stage.

Ok so having finished my first army for the rebels it's time to start on my first regiment of imperial guard for the imperial crusade army. I 've started with a light infantry regiment the Redroran Rangers. If your interested in the background or the army list there's some stuff on my Blog here

https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2016/02/16/the-redroran-rangers/ (https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2016/02/16/the-redroran-rangers/)

https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2016/02/29/1500pts-redroran-rangers-army-list/ (https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2016/02/29/1500pts-redroran-rangers-army-list/)

Mean while my first unit for the army is a Skunk-Bear armoured car converted from a £5.00 1/43 diecast I picked up at The Works shop here in the UK

and turned in to this

A couple more pictures and some background and stats for the Skunk-Bear armoured car can be found on my blog here for those interested

Cheers Jon

Cheers.

I wouldn't dream of using 1/43rd with 28mm WW2 historical stuff because it would look oversized but in the dark future apparently everything is a bit oversized so it seems to work quite well. :D

I managed to get one of my special weapons squads finished these are the sniper rifle armed guys. I love how finished Imperial guard armies look but painting up mass infantry using a production line can be a bit of a grind.  Still 26 down and good progress is being made on the three command squads to get another 15 finished.

Got these guys done before heading off on a nice family holiday to Cornwall (head is full of Arthurian legends now and after visiting Tintagel I'm desperately trying to avoid the urge to buy Romano British miniatures >:D).

The mortars are for my Rangers command platoon and use some the excellent heavy weapons arms from Victoria miniatures.

Based coated another two ranger squads yesterday so they are the target for this week and then that just leaves a six figure special weapons squad and a another (but different version) of my homemade Skunk Bear armoured cars to pass the finish line (phew)

OK so the last two ranger infantry squads are done and I'm down to a six man special weapons team and another kit bashed armoured car to hit the finish line. Not much to say on these guys really bog standard infantry with anti-armour weaponry.

Cheers Norgrim. I could use the armoured cars as "counts as" vehicles but as I still play 4th edition 40K I'm using the old Vehicle Design Rules (VDR) to give them their own stats (see the blog post below)

Very cool.  Have you considered the Buffel or whatever armored car?  Weird with a V-shaped hull, and someone on this board makes an MDF kit of it. It would almost fit your sand-troopers aesthetic.

Keep going, you're crackin' along on this project!

Cheers Elbows always looking for alternative vehicles for my 40K armies. While I love the idea of STC vehicles in 40K it just doesn't sit right, in my mind, that across a million worlds and different human cultures of the Imperium they all use the same two dozen vehicles. Forge world does some good stuff in that respect but most is way out of my budget. So for someone like me who likes kit bashing and isn't a competition gamer the VDR rules are a great add on to my 40K games.

So the Redroran Rangers 1500pt army is finished (yay :D)

I completed the last squad the special weapons squad from the command platoon

and the whole army looks like this

for anyone who is interested you can follow the process of creating this army as well as background fluff and army list on my blog here

https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/category/redroran-rangers/ (https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/category/redroran-rangers/)

So I started this 40K project in January with a view to finishing off a lot of half (or less) completed projects I had laying around the man cave and having reached the beginning of May I've now completed two useable 40K armies I think this may the most productive I've been in years.

Next up opponents for my Ranger army I'm back to Chaos (sort of ) with the Brotherhood of Spite....

Yeah. I think I started modeling these guys about two years ago then got distracted (as I'm prone to do) and they spent the next two years staring accusingly at me from a shelf in my man cave......It's nice to have finally got them finished.

*The legs, bodies and most of the arms are from the old Defiance games USMC (kept the guns added GW lasgun barrels to them)
* helmeted heads are from Anvil industry (though they no longer seem to produce them)
* beret heads are crooked dices 7TV range
* Loads of extra GW parts from my bits box (Catchan heads, heavy weapon, back packs)
* some arms from Victoria miniatures (mostly heavy weapons crews)
* some officer arms from Hersey miniatures (officer accessory sprue)

probably a few other random parts from bits box to.

OK it's been a while since I updated this thread but I finally have something new to add to this project at last. I finally got around to painting up the miniatures I got from the Return to Colony 87 kickstarter. So I've assembled a planetary governor and his retinue.

Happy new year guys.

I've decided to start a new gaming board for this project in 2017 a nice ruined city to scrap over.

A bigger post on my Blog here for those interested

https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2017/01/01/building-a-battlefield/ (https://diablocrusade.wordpress.com/2017/01/01/building-a-battlefield/)

The long and short of it is, after much consideration, I've decided to go with (mostly) laser cut MDF for this project. I've never used any MDF scenery before so its a bit of a learning curve but here is my first effort in the form of some shipping containers.

this is going to be quite the involved project so I'll use this thread to try and keep me going by posting updates when I hit the proverbial wall. :)

Cheers one thing about the MDF is its pretty flat and smooth with no real surface texture other than a few laser cut lines so I think you need to try imply texture with the paint effects you use. I'm not sure if I'll get it right but it makes for an interesting challenge. :D

I'm stuck in a time warp still playing 4th edition 40K with a mix of 3rd, 4th and 5th edition codex. I dropped out of 40K for a while and when I got back into it I just didn't see the point in buying a new edition and a load of codex books. Also if I'm honest I'm not overly into all the flyers and super heavy vehicles that seem to be in vogue with todays 40K. Mostly I play solo games when I play (occasionally roping in my son) but If I'm honest I spend much more time painting and modelling than I ever play these days.

Very effective (and a nice concise blog post). I see rubble in 28mm (and 6mm and 15mm buildings when the rules allow it) as trees on a piece of terrain to move around to fit the miniatures. Very effective painting and weathering, nice one.

yeah well I won't say I wasn't worried but everything I could find on the net suggested Black Cat had sorted themselves out in the last few months so I kept the order small and they came through which is good because they have loads of cool bits and pieces.

These tiles are fantastic! So much awesome. The attention to detail is wonderful.
(Why is it I always find a new rabbit hole to explore, I.E. your blog, when I have no time?)
What size are the tiles? How wide are the roads?

Another road tile finished which puts me half way through my city fight board (eight tiles down eight to go). I wanted something that said 40K on the board so I created a street of heroes employing old 2nd edition plastic mono-pose Space marines I bought on eBay for a few shekels

OK work on the city fight board has slowed a bit due to a lack of funds. I have a few small pieces to work on but I need to purchase some more building to finish the board. I needed something to keep my interest going while I wait for next payday. I already had one army based up for city fighting (my 888th renegades) and had initially planned to build another Imperial guard style force as opposition however as noted I'm short of funds  :(. Digging around my lead pile I found some Dark Angels who had been used in a none to successful experiment with the Army Painter dip. With a bit of work, some new bases and an attempt to rescue the original paint jobs, I was able to build a new force to join the Diablo Crusade and battle it out across my ruined city with the traitorous 888th. I give you Task Force Retribution

So the city fight board is on hold until the rest of my MDF buildings turn up (taking a worryingly long time if I'm honest) in the mean time I've gone back to finish another long started never finished 40K army this time a Lost and the Damned army dedicated to the outcast god Malal (or Malice). The background fluff for this army can be found here

So like a lot of my projects I have some stuff for this army finished, some not even started and some half finished here are a few pictures of the stuff that is finished

1st a cultist unit converted from WFB flagellants

A Giant Chaos Spined Beast

and some chaos spawn

lots more to come for this army in the form of mutants, demons and cultists

Lovely mutants!  Especially the drooping eye guy lol

And I also like the Malal theme.

If I can just add a bit of C&C I think perhaps you could achieve more by adding a bit of grime and filth to them. They look almost pristine. Between the traitor guard you posted first and these, the traitor guard wins out because of the nitty gritty look in my opinion.

Its a fair comment were I starting the army from scratch I'd probably go more grime and grit but I'm to far in to want to go back know. I'm already planning my next Renegade army and the test pieces are a lot dirtier and less uniform.

I've finished up another unit for my brotherhood army this time 20 mutants converted from plastic cultists and chaos spawn bits.

Ok along time since I posted on this thread. I lost my enthusiasm for 40K a bit and got distracted by other projects so this one just sort of drifted. Recently I got drawn back in by the UK release of Warhammer 40K Conquest Magazine. The chance to pick up some cut price miniatures with a magazine at my local news agents was to much. After a couple of magazines I took the plunge on the 8th edition mini starter set called First Strike and I'm hooked again.

I really like the (relatively) new Death Guard so I've painted up the three man mini unit from the starter set and thought I'd share a few pictures

Another unit from the First Strike mini starter set this time Primaris Space Marine Reivers. These will be the starter of a new Primaris only Chapter, I've tentatively named Crimson Templars,  eventually but for now I'm just trying to get everything in the starter set painted so I can have a few learn the game skirmishes.

thanks guys.

Yes I bought the start set with a view to getting my 9 year old Nephew a game or two, he is always fascinated by uncle Jon's soldiers when he comes to visit, seems like the perfect price point for such ventures.

Next up the Poxwalkers from the starter set. I really like these miniatures …I mean how can you not love Nurgle plague zombies? I tried to make them look as gross as possible and used a lot of ink washing on these guys I also used gloss varnish at the end on some of the more oozing slimy bits.

I now have the last Primaris unit to finish and the whole starter set is done. Thanks to the Warhammer Conquest magazine I was able to double up on my Nurgle model count on the cheap. However because I don’t like the idea of duplicate minis I converted the second two batches of easy build units they are now ready for painting at some point.

Nice.

So that is the First Strike box. Must resist (even though it is not much more than the price of a couple of figures).

Its a nice little starter set 15 miniatures, a small play mat, a scenery piece, a mini rule book and accessories for less than a box of primaris marines is a pretty good deal.
