Title: Classic Space Hulk blog
Post by: Sgt. Scream on February 06, 2016, 09:46:12 PM

Hello everybody.

I know its been a long time since my last post. And though I have not posted, progress was made on various projects. I will show you pictures, that's a promise. ^^

One thing that I did do a short time before Christmas last year was starting a massive Space Hulk collection.
That's right, Games Workshop's old board game classic. While the game has gone through four reincarnations since its first release in 1989 I didn't want any of the recent versions. What I wanted though was huge: everything ever released for Space Hulk 1st edition in good condition and all scenarios that were ever printed somewhere. I found a compendium that Berthold Nüchter compiled and it speaks of a grand total of 81 (76 if you don't have two core sets) missions that were released in White Dwarf issues over the years or different books, to include mission books of the other editions of the core game.
With the "Deathwing" expansion pack arriving two days ago I now have everything ever released for this all time classic.
Since I own two core sets, I have plenty of Terminators to fiddle around with and so I will in the end start painting some to expand my Rogue Trader Crimson Fists army and the other half will be Blood Angels. The latter were the Space Marines mentioned in most campaigns (though there was the obvious Dark Angels "Deathwing" campaign and some Space Wolves missions and some minor Ultramarine or Imperial Fist stories plus missions in White Dwarf and the expansion book "Space Hulk: Campaigns"). I would like to play through all 81 mission with the Blood Angels.

So, my overall ebay and store haul was:

A programmable digital timer to replace the hourglass
1st Edition Space Hulk core set (German)
1st Edition Space Hulk core set (English)
1st Edition expansion pack "Deathwing" (2x)
1st Edition expansion pack "Genestealers"
1st Edition expansion set "Campaigns" (hard cover book)
2nd Edition core game's missions book (because of two more campaigns for the Blood Angels)
3rd Edition rules (just to see the differences) and mission book
3rd Edition complete marker and tokens set (1st edition lacks some of the newer+handy tokens)
all UK White Dwarfs that had missions and expansion rules and/or card sections for Space Hulk:
WD #147
WD #149
WD #158
WD #197
WD #199
WD #201
WD #203

I was able to get most of the games in unpunched condition, miniatures still on sprues. All WD issues had their card sections still untouched. The expansion packs aren't missing a single piece. What can I say? A happy man I am ^^

Like my Rogue Trader army shows, I am in love with GW's old stuff. The miniatures of those lost days are having their own charm and all it needs is some dedication to show it once you paint your figures.

So without any further delay I present (a little conversion)

Brother Leon

Beautiful miniature mate! What colours did you use to achieve that traditional Blood Angel paint scheme? It looks amazing!!!!

I too own all of the above Space Hulk items (not the German stuff though) and I love them! It's what got me into the hobby in 1990!!!

New minigun and ammo pack on the old guy works well. Not too enamoured with the ammo feed but don't think I could have done it any better. I'm looking for these oldies as well, but I think I will have to do with my newer (but not the newest) Space Hulk, if and when I find enough old Terminators that is as they all seem to have been lost. Got bucketfulls of Genestealers though :)

Looking forward to reading up on your future exploits!

Thank you, Johan. The ammo feed was tricky. I might have had to shorten it a bit. Too late.  lol

I actually totally went with the tutorial from the lastes Space Hulk that was posted on Tale Of Painters. It works not only on 4th edition.  :D

Nicely done!  8) Your wee guy brings back some memories! I've got to admit I love the newer version SH models. I got it the first time it was supposed to be a limited edition! >:(

Is the ammo feed a small railroad track?

No. It's the rotary cannon set from Forgeworld's Horus Heresy models, mate. The feed is part of the kit. It takes forever and lots of warm water to carfully bend it to shape in order to fit the backpack and gun in the correct angle.

Wow, what a haul! I've got some serious, erm, dead tree envy now.
Leon looks good.
I only got in on the whole GW hobby in 2nd edition, but the old Rogue Trader era stuff has always held a great appeal to me. (I should really dig out my stash of RT goodies and finally do something with it...someday soon. Still can't decide on a chapter for my beakies.)

I've recently been going through my old Space Hulk stuff and have trawled Ebay for more Traitor Terminators. Looks like you probably spent quite a bit to gather together that lot. I was looking for the Campaigns book but having collected all the old White Dwarfs I've got everything in it anyway now. I'm tempted to go 3D in the future as well. I've also been assembling plastic beakies to fit with the 4 squad types listed in the power armour marine lists.

Great conversion on the placcy marine. Seen a few assault cannon conversions of these models and yours is definitely one of the best. Any plans to convert other weapon systems with these models?

Small update on my Space Hulk Blood Angels and another conversion - if you want to call attaching a hacked-to-shape close combat attachment from my Rogue Trader plastics "conversion" ^^

Great paintjobs and conversions; you certainly captured the original style!  :-*

I'm a huge fan of GW's RT era miniatures, and I have a ton of these guys lying around, but somehow, they never really did it for me; I've always been drawn towards the Exo suits and first metal terminators and those dark blue boys have never even seen a game at my house.

But the way you paint them, they're actually quite marvelous! You've made me look at them in a different light now!  ;)

Love em. Love em so much I picked up a bag of these old guys myself. How many do I need again for game? I know have 8, 1 flamer and 7 regular guys, so I need, 1 or 2 sergeants and another flamer, right?
Title: Re: Classic Space Hulk blog
Post by: Sgt. Scream on February 14, 2016, 09:42:45 PM
First edition didn't have specific Sergeant miniatures, they only had different coloured bases. In other words, any power glove toting Marine can be your Sergeant. You'll need five per squad for mission 1 and 2 and then another five men squad for all the other missions of the core set. The expansions ask for more variants in weapons like Assault cannon, Lightning Claws etc.
Title: Re: Classic Space Hulk blog
Post by: Modhail on February 14, 2016, 09:50:49 PM
Yup, 1st and 2nd ed core rules require 2 sergeants (with Powerfists for 1st ed. and powerswords for 2nd.), 6 regular Terminators and two with heavy flamers. Once you get into the various expansions and WD/Journal articles the sky is the limit with regards to gear...

Brother Omnio, in his 3rd edition version carries a scanner device built into his power glove. I wanted one like these for my troops, so I added a communicator from the RT era accessories sprue to his belt.

Bother Goriel's 3rd edition version shows him heavily cut up by rending claws from a surprise Genestealer attack. He's holding the left-overs from one of these beasts in his hand and steps over the remains of another.

I tried to cover as much of the current version's theme and carry it over to the old monopose Terminator figure. Here is my result:

I have finished my first Sergeant. Not all Classic Space Hulk missions have Sergeants equipped with Power Sword. For those that do I was thinking about how to add the sword to the monopose figure and decided the best solution will be using a sheathed one.

I have finished yet another Marine for classic Space Hulk. This time its Heavy Flamer toting Brother Zael.

Now this one is a bit weird. For some reason I have figures out of the original boxed sets that I own which are not casted correctly. The whole side where the stormbolter is located is kind of crooked.
For that reason the flamer cannot be pushed all the way towards the shoulder pad. Anyways, it will do the job and add another marine to the squad.  ;D

Time for more Space Hulk. In the wake of the return of the Genestealer Cults to the 40k universe, I have started to dig out the unpainted classics that belong to the "Genestealer" expansion of the core game. Using the modern miniature's paintjobs as a guideline, I came up with this bad boy. How do you like him?
I used some Imperial Guards bitz (speaker of a vox-caster and chainsword) and an old Space Marine Boltgun to which I added a shoulder-strap.

Lovely stuff, you've done a great job with some old minis!

No. It's the rotary cannon set from Forgeworld's Horus Heresy models, mate. The feed is part of the kit. It takes forever and lots of warm water to carfully bend it to shape in order to fit the backpack and gun in the correct angle.

For future reference - I had a similar ammo belt on another Forgeworld mini, and this is when you use a hairdryer - the piece is so thin it goes floppy in seconds, and can be bent into shape instantly.

As it's not wet, you can use superglue immediately.  Superglue accelerator also really, really helps here - while it's soft, get the piece fixed quickly.

Great use of the old hybrids mate. Well done.

Thanks! I appreciate all feedback.  8)

For the Space Hulk "Campaigns" addition I need a lot of Genestealer Hybrids with a variety of weapons. After counting and noting on a piece of paper the different loadouts I need to assemble I noticed that I need four unarmed Hybrids. In the "Campaigns" supplement the unarmed ones are psykers. Now I kind of figured that they probably would not run without anything to defend themselves with against the Imperium's forces sent after them. So, instead of "unarmed" I built my first two Hybrids that use improvised weapons.
Let's imagine that they were just taking whatever tools lay around them. Being part of a mining colony I thought digging equipment like shovels and pickaxes would be the most likely ones.

Thanks, guys. I just love the classics from Citadel. Some of their newer stuff is very nice indeed, but being around the 40k game for such a long time I really dig those old fellas.

Next three assembled and primed.  :D

Absolut fantastisch!

I love those paintjobs as well as the spirit behind it and the charme, character and "simplicity" of those sculpts.

Those hybrids look fantastic! I remember being rather gutted by how bad the models were when I first got Genestealer (although not as gutted as I was by the bloody horrendous Librarians!). As time has gone by I've warmed to them a bit more thanks to good old fashioned nostalgia. You've really done a good job of them.  :-*

Fantastic paint jobs in these, and just reminding me of how great Space Hulk was/is. With GW bringing back Blood Bowl and WQ and so on, I really hope they release a non-limited edition of the game again.

Following the last entry on my Space Hulk project I have now finally painted the other two "unarmed" Genestealer Hybrids (psykers). Again these were equipped with some tools so they don't have to engage empty handed. ;-)  Oh, the one guy is carrying what I imagine to be some sort of electronic torchlight. It has been assembled out of a Terminator teleport homer. The threaded bar the other Hybrid is holding as an improvised club has been taken off a Chaos Cultist. This time I played around with some rust effects made from strongly thinned Blazing Orange. What do you prefer? The rusty orange or the green rust (copper rust) I used in my last entry?

The brazen verdigris is of course more WH40K Imperial... Remember the Space Marine made of bronze in front of the galactic headquarter in N´ham...  :D
However I prefer the Necromunda look of rusty steel, therefore I like the newer basing style better (although it´s still a bit too shiny for my taste...  >:D  ).

You know I like it rusty and dirty and filthy...

The Cult rises! Finished off another set of models today. All weapon combinations shown are made for Space Hulk. However, since Genestealer Cults have just been reintroduced to Warhammer 40k, I figured that some Hybrids with pistols could easily carry some demolition charges in their free hands.

I did not have any of the new bits so these were built completely from scratch using masking tape, broken off 1st edition SH Terminator's antennas and some cut down RTB01 box Beaky Marine scanner device. How do you like them?

@Tas: looks like you had a lot of fun.

WIP: some people wanted to know how the new Acolyte arms fit on the classic Hybrids. The answer is: they do, but look a little small - unless you put some effort into it. I combined old Stealer arms with a shoulder pad of a Cadian Guardsman and the new parts.

I scratchbuilt a complete heavy bolter from parts of a new Neophyte heavy stubber and Astra Militarum grenade launcher parts as well as an old Ork boltgun (muzzle) and a Space Marine Scout's bipod. :-D

I have finished Brother Scipio today. Nothing really special about him. The only conversion is his base as some kind of tribute to the latest 3rd and 4th edition Space Hulk miniature. This completes squad Lorenzo.

Since I want to be able to play all Space Hulk scenarios no matter when they were released I will need a Broodlord for the newer stuff. This miniatures I got off eBay and its out of the recent version of SH.

Pretty basic paintjob, some hacking and slashing on the base to make it fit an after-market resin 50mm diameter base. Blends in quite well with my other 'stealer miniatures.

It is really amazing how effective this looks.
I mean, technically, the painting on those termies is very simple, but it just works. I bet the squad looks terrific on the board or the table. A valuable lesson to be learned from this could be: 'Don't overdo it, just make it work!'  :)
