Title: Model Rail Scotland 2016-Show Pics (pic heavy)
Post by: Andym on February 12, 2016, 07:02:30 AM
I usually pimp this show out at this time of year. Strictly not a wargames show, but our model rail colleagues constantly provide a great source of inspiration and techniques we can all use on our tables.

Here's 2 of my favorite pics from last year....

Looking forward to your pics from this event as usual Andy. Some awesome modelling skills on display there. If only wargamers were half as discerning!  ;)

So, Colin and myself went to the rail show today. I can honestly say its been the best one I've been to. Any gamers in the Glasgow area looking for something to do, I'd highly recommend it. Its last day is tomorrow (Sunday), it's well worth it. You get a better selection of scenery than you get at any wargames show. I finally managed to get the sea moss trees I've been trying to source for ages and bags of different scatter to put on my bases to give (hopefully) that Autumn feel.

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20160227_195852_zpsrpwv7l33.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160227_195852_zpsrpwv7l33.jpg.html)

But enough of what I bought, the layouts were amazing! :o

I've got too many pictures and I've tried to narrow it down. I'll show some in installments. I'll show my favourites first.

The first one is made by a guy called Pete Goss. It's called the World's End after the Simon Pegg film. The man seems to sell his own painted figures. Hence the showcase with reenactment civil battle.

My second of my favourites is one without trains. It had running trams and buses. It's made by the same club that made the coastal board. The Model Railway Society of Ireland. It also had (if I can imbed a video, I'll show you) a fully working 15mm woman with bike. We couldn't fir the life of us work out how it was done. There's no slot in the board!! :o

Are those Sealed Knot type re-enactors in one of those scenes? That's an amusing touch. Hard to tell but they seem a little too slim and there aren't enough glasses and digital watches to be strictly accurate.

Nice work, thanks for sharing the pics. I know from personal experience that attending model train can be quite traumatic, even more so than their wargaming counterparts but they do provide great inspiration for terrain modelling.

Heard about this on the radio today and wondered if you two would pop along.
I've got a few books by chaps who build these dioramas and there's some good tips and inspiration in them.

Thanks for the pics.

Probably a moving magnet underneath. It's how the buses, etc move on these tables.

Germans.

Thanks for sharing - they really know how to put on a visual feast.

No problems fellas! They done all the work, I just pointed my camera in their general direction and snapped away.

Its quite funny. I showed my mate in work some of these pics and he noticed it straight away, I hadn't even seen it.....theres a person sleeping under the table in this pic.... lol lol lol

Some more pics....

I'm not sure if the panorama image I used for the first pic will come across right on the forum. It looks good on a camera phone.

Great pics Andy - thanks for the effort

My favourite is the landscaping in the open cast colliery. Beautiful.

Aren't they fabulous? I could look at those photos for hours. I'd love any one of them to actually play with. Thanks for posting.

Incidentally, I've noticed that exhibitors at model railway shows are very like anglers - they never seem to look happy (unlike wargamers).... :D

That was one of the things we were talking about, it seems quite an aged population of railway enthusiasts. We were thinking the would make a fortune with a walking cane/zimmer frame trade stand. It seemed to be mostly grandads with their grandkids. It would be ashame if it really is a dying past time!

We were trying to work out if we could sneak back in, when everone went home and play wargames over all of the o gauge railways! ;)

I think railway modellers are unhappy because once their layout is done , unlike wargamers, they can't change it around. ;)

Yup, that's what I'm thinking as well. It's a time, space, money issue of which younger people tend to have less then retirees  :(

Not quite...  ;) http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=35212.0

Beautiful pictures, thank you very much for the effort of taking them and showing us! Great show indeed. I wonder how that works. The clubs/owners take all the risk of shipping them to site, erecting them and leaving them and their valuable models overnight. Do they get a share of the entrance fee or it is all just for the fun, pride and honour?

Amazing scenery, 8) Especially "Worlds End"!!!!  :-*  :-*

Rather sad that the demographic may be changing a little, as long as retirees keep entering the hobby thats ok, but if they keep buying motorbikes and killing themselves, or getting lost on climbing adventures, where will all those fantastic products, stores and techniques go??!  :'(

Cheers

If I've got anything to say about it, all those products and techniques will end up on a wargames table!  ;) :D

Maybe there'll be a renaissance in modelling the same as in music sales. I keep hearing vinyl is making a comeback. Maybe the lure of something material and physical will bring people away from computers?

But you're an enigma! ;) Your tables are a fantastic crossover world between the two hobbies!

Actually never asked what the guys with the displays get. I'll need to remember to ask that next year. One guy I spoke to was talking of a few hundred pound to transport his display up to Glasgow. There must be something in it. As well as that, they do charge adults £12 at the door. I don't know who sees that.

Yeah I really appreciate all the detail you guys put into your terrain, It's great we can learn stuff from the train enthusiasts.

TBH I enjoy the anti-electronic hipster side to the hobby. Moustache wax is great for your paintbrush tips  too  ;D

Insurance, public liability, hall rental, advertising materials, ...  o_o then there's the club..
Krikey $200 pounds to transport a train set  :o

One can only hope  :)

I don' think they get anything from it, it's more a 'love' thing. There's one down the road from us in November and that's £6 through the door and with the amount of punters there I can't imagine that it would be hardly anything after the venue has bee paid for  :?

cheers
