Title: The Shannara Chronicles - Not As Bad As It Looks!
Post by: throwsFireball on February 12, 2016, 11:19:08 PM
I remember reading these books years back. Very derivative (sort of).

I've been watching the TV series. Quite enjoyable and I recommended it.

Much better than that Beowulf series.

Also, I really like the elven armour design, although it's a bit BDSM. I can't find any pictures of it on the 'net but I'd love miniatures that looked like it.

I think you say that because there is lot of tight and bright pants on rounded buttocks  lol

Quite awful, imo. I don't mind a few shapely gals in tight clothes, but the script is fucking awful, the MTV primary intention of showing ribbed tummies and well rounded buttocks becomes just too obvious.

You guys are missing out if you don't watch this.

Look at some of these highlights...
Ear Armour!

It is very important to protect your ears against frostbite and trolls.

BDSM Armour!
Elf armour that doesn't make me think of anything that is VERY VERY NSFW SERIOUSLY DON'T CLICK ON THIS AT WORK (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/Ponygirl_folsom2005.jpg).

Elf Princesses!
Elf princesses that are dressed as hookers (or maybe very skimpily dressed flappers) for some unknown reason.

I think you say that because there is lot of tight and bright pants on rounded buttocks  lol

Sometimes they have no clothes on!

It seems like they're going for "once per episode, strip one of the girls off" sort of deal.

Gimli as an elf? Heresy!! It looks alright. Never heard of it before, but it looks like some easy-watching.

@Daniel36  :o I just had my world shattered! Gimli! Nooooo..... Any how. After the initial shock I have found it very enjoyable and it has captured some of what I remember from reading the books a lifetime ago.

HHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

(I guess I should add that I've always been curious about Shannara but haven't looked too closely at it. I think I might prefer starting with the books, though.)

I will take that as a dire warning, from what I remember.  ;)

I don't think it's too bad either. Not all TV productions have to have the kind of grandeur the GoT has!

As it comes for free, I take the gift and quite enjoy the ---sights - !

Cheers

I've watched the first few episodes so far. I'm torn because of the terrible acting, poor effects & mediocre writing, but MAN is it ever exciting to have true high fantasy up on the TV screen again! Elves and demons and magic, it's all so damned SATISFYINGLY bad! Then again, I'm a sucker for things that are just the right kind of awful

So far it has been on the good side of campy (and defintely better than that Beowulf bore-fest) but it does grind down a bit in episode 7. Part 8 has to be better or .... :D

I didn't realize there was a tv series. I confess I'm intrigued, but despite having read all the books, I feel that the formula Brooks uses for his stories tired itself out long ago. The original book "The Sword of Shannara" suffered from being very derivative of Lord of the Rings (which the author himself has confessed). The second book however, "The Elfstones of Shannara" is excellent. I like the third as well and after that they sort of start being very same-y.

I'll have to check out the TV series, but I don't remember much in the way of t'n'a in the books. Not that I'm complaining mind you...

Are you kidding?! Part 7 was the best.

Tribesmen hunting elves in an abandoned and ruined underground high school. Absolutely excellent.

All these years, I could've sworn Allanon was black.

How so? None of the artwork ever depicted him as such.....

I always thought of Rasputin when I thought of Allanon.

I certainly did not think of Gimli when I pictured Eventine.

Dreadful script (Elves saying things like 'Are you kidding?" Not very 'high fantasy!), mediocre acting, but as somebody said earlier...just the right side of awful. I really kinda enjoyed episode 1!!  Will certainly keep watching...after all, Elves, Demons, magic, etc... What's not to like? :D

It's a bit "Shannara 90210", but I'll keep watching it. The Shannara books were some of the first fantasy books I ever read, back in the old days when dinosaurs still roamed the earth!

GOOD special effects?  ;) I've honestly seen some more convincing LARP outfits...

All mockery aside, I've found the show a guilty pleasure. I enjoy the bright colours and not too serious dialogue and humor. While the actors might not win any Oscars I think they are good enough for what they do. I actually like the main three, think their characters have a good dynamic.

And it's nice to see a more light hearted take on fantasy than 'Game of Thrones' grimdark.

Shannara was adequate but derivative.  If it is all about T&A I prefer the wife to that kind of fantasy so I will pass.  Too bad, when done well I think high fantasy can compete with and other visual story line.

Don't worry, your wife will enjoy it too. lol

I thought it was definitely watchable, rounded buttocks aside, it seems very much the fashion now (it kinda reminded me, acting wise of 'The 100' that apocalyptic sci fi series that I thought got more interesting as time went by).

The armour worn by the Black Guard looks like the armour in the Snow White and the huntsmen film during the battle at the start.

Either way I'll watch it and see where it goes, might be quite the thing to have on while lazily painting some minis.

I guess I must check this out.
The second shannara series was the first fantasy series I bought in my teens after LOTR.
I've read the origional as well by now. I must admit, not that special, but maybe in it's time when you weren't thrown to death with fantasy novels.
I do have a special place for the elfqueen of shannara. I loved that book. Not sure if it still holds up, but I have fond memories of it.
Even used the plot in an AD&D campaign.

LOL, you don't know my wife's opinion on Shanarra, loved it until it got "Too many books on a shelf" level of repetition.

You were talking about the books, right?   ;)

Seriously she likes the stories (digital, movies, print,) to have plots, karma/justice to collect its price for Evil, and some sense of coherency in costuming/dialogue/theme.

Yes to the pre-deluge of everybody has a trilogy (or a Freaking Wheel of Time) when it was more acceptable to be "inspired by LOTR" than now when I have pretty given up on clones of other authors Fantasy reading.

Elf Queen was actually pretty good.

As for the TV series I must admit, in truth in advertising sense of the word, that TV pretty much disappeared from my life decades ago.  I don't have cable TV and it is not coming back at this late stage of my life.  Once was enough.  The TV is my DVD viewer...

Having just watched the 1st episode I have to agree with this.  Will not doubt continue to watch titbit won't have high hopes  :?

I like how distance is flexible. Characters can travel for days to get to a place, then get back home from there in under a day. Everything is within walking distance even though the landscape is radically different. lol

I am guilty of watching this....

Never could get into the books (back in the day)...

But i like the series, so the family watches.

You want your socks blown off?  WATCH "The Expanse"
http://www.syfy.com/theexpanse

I like it better than Firefly, and that is saying a lot!

It passes the time. The ear armour - well maybe older elfs need the extra support to stop gettting floppy ears?

Light hearted enjoyable nonsense over a cup of tea.

Maybe they played to much old school Warcraft? you have to walk all the way to some place before you can get the fast travel options  ;D

Expanse is actually very good, looking forward to the next series, shame its next year.

Meanwhile I got the books recently so will read them (Expanse that is - Shannara books are in the loft, no real push to read them again any time soon).
