Title: What next for Copplestone Barbarica 15mm fantasy?
Post by: swiftnick on February 16, 2016, 01:51:52 PM
It has been a while since we have seen anything new so to be honest I would take just about anything.
However if I was to write a Christmas list I would say in the short term we need a command pack for the Picts.

There was talk of fantasy Romans has anybody seen greens or sketches?

I hope you are wrong about the fantasy roman.

I will prefer some 15mm adventurers. The minis are ready since 2011 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30425.msg950126#msg950126):

Looks like the great man has given up again... Apart from sculpting a few of the new 28mm Frostgrave character models for Nick at North Star (all as brilliant as ever), I don't think he's produced anything for a couple of years now.
Pity. He's still one of the best there is.
But that's the artistic temperament for you... If the muse isn't with you, or the motivation, eyesight, or various other factors are not what they used to be...  :(

Stephane I would like to see those adventurers as well.
As for the fantasy Romans, if Barbarica was based on Hyboria. Then I would have thought something ancient Greek based or Egyptian would be more apprpriate.
But would take anything.
I hope he hasn't given up completely. Aren't the 10mm dwarves relatively new?

Its not looking good at the moment.
The last Barbarica releases were the 15mm dwarves and if i remember rightly that was over a year ago.
I heard that Mark planned on doing the first romans as soon as the Northlander/barbarian cavalry was done.
I hope he has not completely given up on the range.

One thing I wish he'd release before he gives up the ghost is a selection of 28mm heads. Sad to say, that's another thing I doubt will ever happen.

The release of the 10mm dwarves was in August 2014.

Let's hope this silence doesn't mean there wön't be any more minis... :(

But what I meant was, the ange didn't expand for years, then they unexpectedly appeared.

I so do hope, he will find the time and inspiration to do the Pict characters. I emailed wih him about that years ago and even send him some drawings of actual finds from prehistory which he was curious about. Sadly, he already then stated that the sales of those unique beauties werent as high as he had expected.

Hopefully, Mr Copplestone, you'll finish the Picts to surprise us all!

Do you think if people started placing orders for the range that he might do more pieces for it?

There are quite a few packs which i am still after.

Maybe do some small warbands Frostgrave style to help get more people interested.

I really dont know...I have quite a lot of his stuff and never was dissappointed, but I guess if it earns some money, this  m i g h t  generate some interest on Mr Copplestone's side.
At least thats what I hope!

I hope so too. I keep buying the figures and talking about them. The hope is to generate some interest in continuing the range.
Shame that the Picts didn't sell well as they are nice figs and crazily easy to paint. But with no command it is a hard sell.
Title: Re: What next for Copplestone Barbarica 15mm fantasy?
Post by: Jagannath on February 21, 2016, 08:21:51 PM
Yeah I wonder if it's self fulfilling in that sense - no command pack because they don't sell, but do they not sell because they aren't a complete range? I wonder.

He did put some new models up on the latest relatively recently - some mummies and wizards.

It wouldn't surprise me if it is because of financial reasons that this range has foundered (although lately, obviously, Mr. Copplestone has been quite busy with "Frostgrave"). It's rather sad how sniffy a large proportion of the gaming community can be about anything that isn't 28mm. Anyway, I messaged him back in 2014 and he told me that he would do a Pictish command pack (chief, shaman and so forth), Cthulhu Mythos-esque demons and, yes, fantasy Romans. As these have yet to appear and almost two years have elapsed it is tempting to fear the worse. Perhaps we should start an online petition!

Some of my work on this delightful range can be seen here:

Just placed a small order for three packs of miniatures.

I also asked about future releases too.

Now everyone else needs to do the same.

The range will only grow with sales so dig deep ;).

If people ask what will be next when they place an order that might help Mark get inspired.

There are still quite a few packs that i want (the whole range really).Just need to sell some other figures to fund it.

Love the look of the Giants and Trolls.

I hate to say this but that new Battle Valor Games might offer alternatives. They already do fantasy Romans called Legians. In the pipeline there are Hellians so possibly fantasy Greeks and fantasy Egyptians called Pyraminians or something.
I can't stress enough how much I would rather see Copplestone figs...

Edit

Have just heard from them.
Turns out Hellians are some sort of demonic race. Which makes sense but there will be fantasy Greeks at some point.
Hoplitians?

I do like the look of the Battle Valor miniatures but like has been said before the postage and customs charges will put me off buying. If they had a stockist in the UK that might well change for lots of people.

Made a list of what i still need to get from the Copplestone range.Quite a bit to be honest so more orders will be going in when i have the funds.

What do people use for buildings with these miniatures?Any good one's around?

Not really sure how to base mine.Might go with single bases as that will give more use.

I too had a few emails with Mark a while ago and the same items were mentioned. I think this range has huge potential for fun games and of course lovely figures. I've been guilty of not buying much of it, so have sent off an order just now, a giant and some heroes.

I have based my northlanders two to a 2p piece with heroes on a 1p base.

For me the order process is excellent and would buy marks figures before an import. I think a pack of legio, a pack of auxiliary and a command of priests, tribunes, wolf, general and emperor would be great. There's a bit of a runequest crossover and of course shattered legions due in the summer.

Must remember to buy another couple of packs next month too

I've been basing my northlanders up for Dragon rampant. Mainly on individual bases, 20mm for the infantry, 25mm for the cavalry and bigger for characters, Giants and bears.

Could always use more cavalry and some wolves..

Post if anyone does get a reply.  :D

Jings I just wrote a post and it vanished.
Basically I said that I was basing rank and file on DBA stylee bases for HOTT.  Then the characters on pennies. For big games I blue tack the pennies onto DBA bases.
For buildings I bought some beautiful scratchbuilt by Zaheer. Perhaps he would produce more...

If Ospreys "Broken Legions" due to be published in July can't provide a catalyst, nothing can. Perhaps onordering we should mention that. I really need to get some more. I have an aversion to horses in fantasy, but I aim to convert cavalry riders to other fantasy mounts.

I have always intended to use CROM, but I haven't painted up the figures yet (I am a little bit scared to they are so nice). However, what I am driving at is that Broken Legions could really provide an impetus behind this range. They would seem to naturally go together.

In truth I have an aversion to horses. They just don't provide any aesthetic interest to me. I like technology, so I love vehicles in sci-fi. In fantasy, horses aren't fantastic, so I would rather have some more interesting and varied mounts. Splintered light have some 15mm Dragon riders that are great in this vein. Sorry to Tolkein purists and the rest of the fantasy cannons out there, but I want cavalry on fantastic fantasy mounts.

I love the barbarians (great sculpts) and 15/18mm.

I would have bought some a long time ago, but it seems pointless for me without an enemy. I was hoping for something like fantasy Romans, but since nothing appeared, lost interest quite some time ago.

Still hoping though...

Well there are two types of barbarians. Beardies and cleanshaven (cimmeriand?).
Then there are giants, picts and dwarfs.
But yes you are right we are all longing for Frazetta inspired Romans.

Since the models habe become available that is the biggest factor against buying them for most of my friends!

At least three were totally excited after we played a game with my collection, but then they saw the homepage and saw only barbarians and (incomplete) picts and dwarfs!

Give the latter two command, heroes and in the case of dwarves archers and this changes. Then some Fantasy Romans and suddenly the minis become VASTLY more attractive for the average buyer!

The Copplestone 15mm figures fit well together with other companies making larger 15mm miniatures such as Eureka 18mm fantasy or Magister Militums Blood Dawn series.
As for romans, Blue Moon Manufacturing  (https://www.bluemoonmanufacturing.com/index.php?cat_id=96)  are also 17mm and make republican and imperial romans that fit perfectly with Copplestone's. The miniatures are beautiful (especially the horses) and it is probably not difficult to find a few fantasy elemants to add to them.
I have used the Blue Moon miniatures as early Rohan and the Copplestone barbarians as Forodwaith tribes - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=83555.0

Just had this reply from Mark Copplestone.

I do have plans to expand the 15mm range and in fact I`m just about to announce some plans that will affect this.  To hear more you should really join our mailing list:

There will be Romans and more Picts , but the first releases will be a pack of Ice Tribe Warriors (like GoTs Wildlings) and an Ice Giant.

This sounds great to me ;).Should make others happy to hear too.

That's very much true; I mix them with Blue Moon, Demonworld and Magister Militum. But then, the average buyer, coming from 28mm+ systems, is used to get it all in one place!

Just had this reply from Mark Copplestone.

I do have plans to expand the 15mm range and in fact I`m just about to announce some plans that will affect this.  To hear more you should really join our mailing list:

http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/maillist.php

There will be Romans and more Picts , but the first releases will be a pack of Ice Tribe Warriors (like GoTs Wildlings) and an Ice Giant.

This sounds great to me ;).Should make others happy to hear too.

'ere we go! 'ere we go! 'ere we go!

That's f@c{1ng brilliant!!!!

Funnily I have been on his mailing list for years but have never had a newsletter.
It is hard to worship a diety when they ignore you.

I never thought to mention, but a fella who comes into our shop (that said we have even had Mark from Copplestone visit) did say he was in contact with Copplestone a lot and said there was the possibility of a new 15mm fantasy range possibly inspired by a certain series  :D

I can't believe that this could be true!!! I just hope, this will cause a momentum, that will also be "inspiring" enough to finish the Picts and Dwarves!

This will be the reason we have not seen much from Mark recently. It looks like he has been doing everything himself.

"For the last few years I`ve been really bogged down in casting and general admin stuff and I`m hoping the changes we`re making will free me up to do more sculpting so there should be at least one release a month for existing ranges and perhaps a new 28mm fantasy project too."

 A new 28mm range?Could it be GoT inspired ;).

Northstar had hinted that they were taking on a couple of new ranges. They've just announced they are distributing Agema figures, maybe Copplestone is next?  :D

Leaving orders and distribution to Northstar would free up Mr. C to do some more sculpting.

That could well be the case of Northstar taking over production and orders.I was thinking that they were also going to be getting Pig Iron too.

It will be great to see regular releases from Mark.

I've been slowly painting up Northlanders for a BigHoTT force(s), with plans to add Dwarf allies at some stage. News of the Romans, and others, has just got me rather excited   :o ;D
I've had to finally add myself to the mailing list just to keep a closer eye for these finally being released. In the mean time I suppose I'll have to order some more infantry and bears to keep me going  :D

I kind of like the connection, knowing I'm ordering from Mark. Though even 2-3 orders a day may be eneough, along with real life, to get in the way of sculpting. I mean X Files is playing havoc with my Monday painting!

Perhaps this means that when Barbarica is the next big thing we'll look back fondly to the good old days when it was our thing. Frankly, I'll take more releases and to hell with the cult status.

My order arrived ASAP as usual, it struck me - Postie is a good shot - that the hill Giants actually make good 28mm ogre-ish monsters.

EXCITING NEWS  AT COPPLESTONE CASTINGS

From 14th March the day-to-day running of Copplestone Castings will be dealt with by our friends at North Star Military Figures. This is really good for me because it means I’ll have more time to sculpt new packs for existing ranges and maybe work on a couple of new projects.

It also means that Wargames Emporium will be able to take our full range to UK shows.

From now until 14th March while we transfer stock and moulds we’ll still be taking orders as normal, but stock levels may be low and you may (temporarily) not be able to buy everything you want. Once our new website, integrated into North Star's, is up and running it'll be back to business as usual.  And there'll be a special limited edition miniature to mark the occasion.  More about that soon.

 From the Northstar news letter.

We will send a further newsletter nearer the date, but for now have a look at the fantastic figures the range includes, and take note there will be special offers and a free exclusive figure once the range is listed on the North Star website.

Time to save up and see what special offers will be on ;).

For what it's worth, the shipping rates are different and North Star's is higher outside of the UK, so it might be worth taking that into account if you were thinking of making a Copplestone purchase.

Copplestone:
Quote
10% on all items to UK and BFPO. Minimum charge £2.00.
15% on all items to Europe (including Russia). Minimum charge £3.50
20% on all items to USA/Rest of the World. Minimum charge £4.00

North Star:
Quote
10% on all products to UK and BFPO. Minimum charge £2.00
20% on all products to Europe. Minimum charge £5.00
25% on all products to USA/Rest of World. Minimum charge £5.00

Wish I knew if the limited edition mini was one I was likely to give a damn about!

I-m happy to  pay a bit more if  that means there will be more releases. :D

In any case alternative 15mm late romans and barbaric tribes also consider Westwind`s  Forged in Battle:
http://www.forgedinbattle.com/

They`ve got a kickstarter going on for late romans, Franks,  goths and the likes. I  got a bunch of ancient germans from this range just to see and they`re only a little slimmer. Copplestone`s barbarians are more `heroic` in comparison.

Wazoom!

Just got the new Copplestone newsletter, and it seems, we have finally a proof of God's existance, because Mr C. has heard our call:

"The plan is for me to make regular new releases for existing Copplestone Castings ranges (initially 10mm or 15mm fantasy) and start work on a couple of new projects.   One of these will be a 28mm fantasy range and the other will be a quirky 30mm toy soldier range called Little Interwars."

Ive used the 10mm trolls, they work for me. The 15mm giants look like scrawny ogres in 28mm.

As for rules, I've made my own quite tightly focuses on the figures available. So I'm now racking my brain for traits for fantasy Romans. I keep thinking of them as Lunars.....

Song of Blades and Heroes works fine, and Matakishi's CROM is a joy to play in 15mm. For larger battles I have up to now used a kustomised version of LoTR, but think Fantastic Saga might also be worth a try. Otherwise Rampant and Mayhem should work fine.

Okay - as I've just (finally, very late in the day) got hooked into these gorgeous little figures, I'm wilfully resurrecting this topic in a wanton act of threadomancy... Because I really want to know if ANYONE knows ANYTHING for sure, one year and more on, about why the promised additions to this range have failed to materialise...
And whether there's any realistic chance of anything ever being added in future.

Perhaps North Star Nick will happen by and drop some crumbs of comfort - or put us out of our misery of unfulfilled anticipation...  :D

One thing or the other please...

At the minimum a Pict command/character pack would make a world of difference to the Picts useability. I know Michael over at Crom's Anvil has commisioned a couple of sculpts to fill out a few options but a new Copplestone pack or two would be very good news...

Thank you, Captain!

I had contact with Mr Copplestone several years ago and we talked (via email) about the continuation of the Barbarica range.
He told me he had a command and a hero pack for the picts ready and I remember I even sent him scans of real archaeological finds of stone axes and flint swords.

Sadly after a while he didnt reply anymore (I feared the worst) and stopped producing anything - then after a while came the cavalry packs and then again nothing.

Just now with Angel Barrack's fabulous new range of terrain, it would make so much sense to complete the range!!!!

Yes, and these are nice...but even nicer would be archers and characters for his 15mm barbarica dwarfes!!!

Ow, wow, those are pretty good, actually. Drat, might have to buy a plastic box of Dwarfs for an excuse to get those metals  lol.

Have you heard something or just surmising from the lack of releases recently?

Yes, that would interest me, too.

Would be a shame, if they left this line unfinished (like the 10mm fantasy which also was never completed).

Swiftnick is perhaps referring to what our North Star Nick said in another thread:

It's still a beautiful range. But I doubt we'll see anything more for it. We've ran Copplestone Castings for a couple of years now and there hasn't been any new 15mm from Mark in this time. His next range is actually going to be 28mm Darkest Africa, but I won't say any more till the first figures come through.

Yes, saw that. It's a shame. There again, Mark Copplestone has always followed his own star and sculpted the things that sparked his interest at the time. That's artists for you... Perhaps he'll come back to these and pleasantly surprise us all one day :)

Let’s hope so. I really do.

A wee bit miffed to be honest as have been collecting, painting and pushing these since they came out and now the range has stopped.

You know this is making me rethink if I want to continue in this hobby. Sound melodramatic I know. Just this constant collecting the new shiny. Back of beyond, Darkest Africa and 1938 collected and painted eventually everybody lost interest starting with the designers. This seems to have accelerated with the advent of skirmish sized games. You hardly get the figures painted and a couple of games in and the next shiny is released.

It's always been that way - certainly over the last 20 years. Another new 'the next big thing' every few months. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon, then the wheels come off leaving just a few diehard adherents to trundle on in obscurity...

To be fair, I don't think we can really accuse Mark Copplestone of this though. He's always been one who makes the things that interest him, when they interest him, and when he loses interest, he moves on. As I say, it's the artistic temperament. He has finished some massive ranges like DA for Foundry which he then went back to under his own brand. Some ranges (like the 1672 stuff) he clearly loses enthusiasm for partway through, and moves on. He seemed to stop sculpting altogether for several years, so personally I'm glad we're seeing new work from him at all.

It's a bit different to the 'new shiny' phenomenon, which is often driven by commercial interests and marketing.

But I do know what you mean. It can be a bit soul destroying  :)

It's an ever revolving door.

I was a habitual victim of the Ooh Shiny Syndrome (OSS) but have since narrowed my focus. I'm still OOH shiny but sticking to one or two chosen games, that I actually play. I've recently sold a ton of stuff for far less than I paid (and that I NEVER used) and I think what a waste of money.

IMHO, I usually don't purchase miniatures unless it is a fully supported line (for large scale games). The flip side of the argument is for the manufacturer. If people like me wait, then there are limited sales and is it worth it to produce a non-profitable line of figures. Which is maybe why the designer has "lost" interest or just shifted focus.

Maybe Copplestone is planning to tackle the 'Knights of the Savannah' he strongly implied he was going to do- about twenty years ago :)

Just wait, in another decade Barbarica will have its comeback.

Haha in another decade I will be to old and blind to paint them, am struggling now. But seriously that was one of the reasons I loved this range. Copplestone figures are just so easy to paint.
Yes I remember the Savannah knights being mentioned when everybody was mad for DA. Just like lots of things were mentioned for BOB and never materialized.
So maybe Mark is a wee bit to blame he gets us hooked with his lead crack and then cuts off supply when he loses interest.
I am going on cold turkey!

The North star facebook page shows a lovely Ice giant to be released this year.
