Hi to all,
It's been a while since I posted here. To make a long story short, I quit the hobby a couple of years ago. I got rid of all of my stuff. At the time, it was a good decision. A few months ago, I picked up a copy of the X-Wing Miniature Game just to check it out... I was hooked after my first game, and I now own close to 50 official ships, and I still haven't assembled my "dream fleets"...
Soon after I had a few games played, I started to think about replacing the cardboard counters that came with the game with something more...hobbyish. I started with the asteroids, but I couldn't stop there. I'll use this thread to show off what I created to customize and enhance my games.
I won't start with the asteroids (because even though I like how they turned out they are boring as hell). Here's my Mobquet Medium Cargo Hauler.

I'm not the greatest builder around here, but I really like how it turned out. The colors are off on the picture, it's not that green and that bright in real life. I'm no photographer and it shows. As far as accuracy is concerned, I'd say it's an interpretation more than an imitation. My Google-Fu turned out about 10 different versions of the ship, so I wasn't overly concerned with accuracy. The only thing that bugs me is the absence of the slanted front side of the middle section. I didn't think I'd be able to pull it off, but after the cylindrical front section was done, I cursed my lack of self-confidence. Oh well, I'm still happy with it. Here are a few more pics.

Here's a few shots with other "official" models to give you an idea of the size of it. Since it is a Huge Ship, I've used the same scale as Fantasy Flight (1/500).

In case you're wondering, it's mostly made out of sheet styrene of different thicknesses. The support rods and the base are temporary. They'll be replaced by machine-cut acrylic sheet and rod soon.
Anyway, that's it for the moment. More to come later.
(It's fun to be back!)
-
That's a beast! Despite it being playable out of the box I found I really wanted to build stuff too. What else do you have planned?
-
It's big, that's for sure. As far as future stuff, I still need to replace the cardboard counters with minis, so containers, mines, sattelites, etc. I also want to make a few more ships, mostly neutral/Scum & Villany stuff. I have some more pics to post later.
-
That is a great start, a lovely ship that works for me.
:-* :-*

Me too, and the more I play, the harder it is to resist making 'stuff'.
Stay on target, stay on target.....
;)
-
Some more stuff. First, what started it all, the boring asteroids...
The recipe is quite simple. Some volcanic rock, a generous amount of drybrushing, a painted bamboo skewer, a bit of dowel and a piece of thin polycarbonate and voila. Here's a slightly less boring picture. It could use a Space Slug, but that's not on my list (for the moment at least...)

More stuff later.
-
...And a last one for today.
Cloakshape Fighters.
I always liked the look of these, so I decided to build some. They're again mostly styrene with some Green Stuff for the cockpit and some aluminium rod. Again, the colors are off compared to reality. I gave 2 of them a color scheme reminescent of the Mobquet. I figure they serve the same crime lord or something.
The other two are more "professionnal" looking. The tan-and-green one looks wookiee to me while the grey and blue one definitely has a Mandalorian vibe to it.

Finally, a family portrait.
That's it for now, I'll post more pics when I have stuff to photograph.
-
I like those ship builds. Have you made cards for them?
-
Great work on the ships and even the "boring" asteroids look good too. 8)
-
Lovely builds (and I admire your patience to make multiples!) 8)

Yeah, and some seriously impressive work there!

Yeah, and some seriously impressive work there!
And another voice to the choir.
Most impressive!

-
Thanks to all for the kind words.
Elk101, I don't have cards for them yet, but I'm planning on using Mel's Miniatures homemade stats as a starting point for the Cloakshapes. I already started thinking about the Mobquet. It'll probably end up being very similar to the Rebel Transport.
Silent Invader, making multiples wasn't that tough. The Cloakshapes aren't very large (5.6cm front to back), so making 4 copies of every bit of styrene that makes them wasn't really time-consuming. Building the 4 of them took two days (about 8 hours total).
Up next: tokens and markers...
-
Much quicker than us have thought. Well done 8)
-
Jesusfreakingchrist!!!! :o :o :o that Mobquet is awesome!!!!!! i'd give you one of kidneys in exchange of a resin copy of that!! :P
and i'm not even an X-wing gamer!!!!
CONGRATS!!!!!!!
-
Missed this thread before (thanks Rafa :D)
Rather bloody good work on all of those 8) 8)
Love the cloakshape, gonna do one of those in 28mm eventually and the Mobquet is sublime :D
cheers
James
-
Thanks guys, I should be posting some more pics this week-end. Nothing as big as the Mobquet, I'm afraid, but still, some more stuff.
Huesped, I'm glad you like it. You can keep that kidney though...
Jimbibbly, I can't wait to see what you do with the CloakShape. It means a lot to me that you like my builds. I might sound a bit like a groupie, but hey, I'm a big fan.
-
Hello to all and thanks for the kind words. Without further delay, some pictures.
First up, an escape pod and some shield generators cleverly hidden on asteroids.
The escape pod (with Interceptor for scale purposes) is mostly made out of parts of a pen and sheet styrene. It's inspired by the often-seen escape pods in Star Wars: Rebels (the animated show). I like the design and I think I captured the feel of it rather well.
Next, it's a trio of shield generators. The recently released Imperial Assault Carrier comes with a mini-campaign that features these as objectives. The "generating" part (those little angular balls on top) were originally plastic necklace beads. My girlfriend kindly donated a bunch of them to me and it's the second time I use them (there's a couple of them on the Mobquet, but they're hard to spot among the clutter).
A group shot of my mines and satellites, with a TIE Bomber for scale. I used shorter rods to base these because I wanted them to be closer to the "ground" just as I wanted the asteroids to be higher. This makes them easier to game around and somewhat prevents them from constant contact with starfighters and/or sausage-fingered gaming partners...
The satellites were mostly made with styrene tubing, pen parts and pins. The design is a simplified version of the art on the cardboard tokens they're meant to replace.
Finally, the mines from the Rebel Transport missions. I tried doing something closer to the cardboard token art but failed miserably, so I threw these together instead. They're not the greatest, but since they're supposed to explode anyway, I can live with them... I made an "effect" six-sided die that I forgot to photograph. This effect die randomizes the outcome of an exploding mine instead of having a token-specific result. Posting a pic of the die would be a whole lot clearer, so I'll try doing that soon.
So, there you have it, a bunch of tokens and markers. I still have a few of these to make as well as some more ships, so keep an eye open as I'll update this thread when I have some pictures to show.
-
I'd say they are all very successful. Great work.
-
They look grand :-*
I really admire your patience in making multiple ones, I've never been able to do that 8)
Jimbibbly, I can't wait to see what you do with the CloakShape. It means a lot to me that you like my builds. I might sound a bit like a groupie, but hey, I'm a big fan.
Thanks but it might be a while yet, plenty of other thing to do ::) lol
cheers
James

Great stuff!
I particularly like the satellites.

Fantastic tread! I love scratch-build models!

Hi to all,
Another small update today. In my quest to replace X-Wing's cardboard tokens with actual minis, I built some cargo containers.
They are inspired by cargo containers seen on the Rebels TV show. I didn't want to recreate the containers seen on the cardboard tokens because I'm not a big fan of the look. Those were inspired by the X-Wing video games, and even though I have fond memories of the games, the dated 3D isn't that appealing to me. I'm not saying mine are that much better, but at least they look like containers... Here are a few detailed shots.

I've just realized I forgot to take a picture with a ship for scaling reference. I guess I'll be posting some more pics later!
-
I like them as well 8)
cheers
James
-
Yup, I like them too.
-
Very nice.
I really like the sense of movement in them.

-
WOw , you're building quita a lot of scenario material. I bet each of your games are colorfull and funny!! .
Congrats again!!!!!!

It's been a while since I updated this thread. Summertime and real life kept me away from the workbench, but now that autumn is here, it's time for a little threadomancy.
(BTW, I hope this is okay. I could've started a new thread, but since this one already exists, I thought I should just add to it.)
So, without further delay, here's my Corellian Star Shuttle.
I started working on it late last spring. It's finally done. I'm quite happy with the finished thing, even though it's poorly balanced because of the weight of the engines. Here's a few more pictures of it.
It's entirely scratchbuilt. It's far from being a perfect replica of the movie version, but it's a close enough match. After all, it's basically a pimped up token from the X-Wing core set... It's scaled at 1/500, the standard X-Wing ''Huge'' scale. Here's a couple of comparison shots.
I hope you guys like it. As usual, comments are welcome.

Cracking work 8) 8) 8)
It really looks the part :)

I hope you guys like it.
Like it?
I love it!

Good to see that you are back onto this project.

-
That's lovely that is!
-
Good work, sir ! :-*
-
Awesome builds but also finished off with excellent painting! You've really nailed the dark red on the transport.
Awaiting more with excitement. :D
-
Thanks to all for the kind words. I still have a few tokens to replace (Debris Cloud and Disabled Ship spring to mind), but I haven't started building anything. I still have a medium ship on the workbench that needs finishing. I also have another Star Wars-related project going on. I'll keep you guys updated here as far as X-Wing is concerned. I'll start another thread for the other project...
-
I also have another Star Wars-related project going on.... I'll start another thread for the other project...
See, now you're just teasing us. ;)
-
Fantastic stuff.
I really like that you are replacing the cardboard tiles with actual miniatures.
Do you have any work in progress pictures / or a tutorial so that we can also try to make some of them too?
-
Mick, I don't have WIP pics for most of the builds. However, I have step-by-step pics of the build of the Cloakshape Fighters. I guess I could throw a tutorial together and post it here.
Damas, be patient, the wait shouldn't be too long!
-
After a looooong hiatus, here's a bit of an update on my X-Wing stuff. It's more of a teaser, I guess. Anyway, you'll be the judges.
So, without further delay, here's my (unfinished) Barloz Medium Freighter.

More to come soon!
-
I like it :D

James
-
fantastic stuff! I'd love to see some of these pre-paint, if that makes sense. That only emphases the skill and lets me steal ideas ;)
But seriously awesome work.
-
Thanks for the kind comments. Painting the Barloz is next on my list, so I hope to post some more pictures in the near future.
Dijit, thanks, that's quite the compliment. Feel free to steal as much as you want, I did the same with the design and plans that went into building this guy...
-
They are very nicely crafted and imaginative additions to the game, well done. The freighter fits very well in the Corellian design philiosophy.
-
Not seeing any pics

Well, that took a while...
Happy New Year to all. The Holiday break gave me a bit of time to FINALLY paint the Barloz Freighter. Here it is.

I hope you guys like it. Giving this guy a "You-came-in-that-thing?" paint job reaaaally made my disappointment with Luke Skywalker and the Crystal Skull, I mean, The Last Jedi easier to live with...
As usual, comments are welcome.

Luke Skywalker and the Crystal Skull
Kek.
-
Lush! Utter lush, that is!
-
Awesome panelling.
-
Such an interesting paint job! It really brings the model out! 8)
-
nice
-
I'm realy loving the Barloz Freighter! (All your X-Wing stuff, actually! :-* )
Didn't that feature in the Allegiance novel?
And is it a complete scratchbuild? If so, it's even more impressive for it! 8)
-
Hey Daeothar,
Thanks for the comments. I don't know if the Barloz was featured in Allegiance, I've never read the novel. It's originally from the old WEG d6 RPG if I'm not mistaken. That's where I first encountered it, way back when. I used to run a campaign in the late nineties and it featured a Rebel privateer crew. This particular Barloz comes from that campaign. It was called the Fat Mynock and was mostly used as a boarding ship by the pirate gang.
The ship is a complete scratchbuild. It's all styrene and a few chopped up bits of paper clips.
-
This thread is amazing. :-* :-*
Lots of inspiration. Very well done.
Following with great interest. :)
-
Wonderful work.
If I was from FFG I'd be giving you a tap on the shoulder and asking about using your images and getting your work into production.
-
Spring is here, and you all know what that means: THREADOMANCY...
After a tumultuous 2018 which left me with precious little free time, here's a small update on my X-Wing stuff. I've wanted to build a bulk freighter for a long time and I finally decided to have a go at it in the last weeks. Here are the results so far.
Sub-assemblies, laid out in no particular order. Here's an "assembled" shot (underside is up)
Another one...
Finally, a shot in the correct, final angle.
It's still pretty much unfinished, but you get the idea. The design wasn't directly lifted from a SW original. It is however strongly inspired by rejected sketches of the Rebel Transport (of TESB fame) by Joe Johnston and/or Ralph McQuarrie. Hope you guys like it. It should be finished before the end of the decade...
-
That is really cool! Love the big ship that you built.
-
Fantastic! :o It seems such ashame to have all that amazing detail hidden underneath!
-
Nicely done. I love that your gubbins are all scratch built 8)
-
Very nice work.
Fantastic! :o It seems such ashame to have all that amazing detail hidden underneath!
Artificial gravity means there is no up or down , it can fly the other way up ^__^.

Thanks for the nice comments. I managed to add a few details to the underside this weekend.

Very cool indeed 8)
-
You really should cast these! There must be a market for them?
-
Very nice.

Inspiring scratchbuilds

Hi to all,
A bit more progress. The underside detailing is pretty much done. I still have to add a bit more gubbins to the engine section. Here's a few pics.
As you'll notice, the main elements have been glued together. Here's what it looks like from the "good" angle.
There's a few gaps here and there, but they'll disappear once the upper hull plating is in place. Engine section is next on my build list. Hope you guys like it.

:o
I refuse to believe what I'm seeing :-*

Fantastic! :-*
Have you started to think of colour schemes for this beastie?
-
Thanks for the positive comments. Much appreciated.
Hey Andym, I started this project with a few quick sketches and color tests. Here's what I had in mind.
In case it's not clear, I'm going for this kind of look.
Earth circa 1975 feels and looks very much like Rebellion-era Star Wars...
I've also been able to work a bit on the main engine bell. It's still at the skeleton stage, and even that isn't finished.
More to come soon.
-
This is just so good... :-*
-
Excellent work.
-
Okay, time for a small update. I managed to find a little time to work on the engine section this week. Here are the results.
The engine bells are a little crooked. It kinda bugs me, but not enough to start over. Overall, I'm satisfied with it. It's not finished, but so far so good. You might notice the two "struts" that I added to the section in front of the engines. I'm really happy with those. It's a super simple addition, but it improves the ship a lot by streamlining the silhouette (when seen from the side) and creating some negative space, making the whole thing "pop" when seen from other angles.
Here's a shot of the whole thing so far.
The pics are kinda crappy, I'll try to post better ones soon. As usual, comments are welcome.
-
Amazing work! May the fourth be with you. o_o
-
Splendid 8)
As to colour schemes, my favourite is the small one in the top right corner.
-
Wow! :o
Colourwise, I would have said top left or bottom right. If you're wanting that truck look, anything with writing on adds to that aesthetic.
-
Amazing! :-*
-
I managed to work a bit on the sides this week. Here's the results so far.
The lighting in the pics makes the panel lines look deeper than they actually are. There's still a lot of detailing to add, but it's a start. More to come soon.
