Title: Badab War: Updated 4/8 Fire Hawks Contemptor Dreadnought, page 3
Post by: Pizzagrenadier on February 28, 2016, 05:41:43 AM
Howdy. I just finished off some Fire Hawks terminators for the Badab War project. I dove in and got a ton of of resculpted MK VI beakies from Forgeworld (and combined with my MK VI bits from the new tactical and assault boxes), I'm starting to assemble a pretty decent sized pair of forces for recreating the Badab War. Call it nouveau Oldhammer. The other part of the project is using the new Betrayal at Calth game and translating it over to the Badab War. Since Betrayal at Calth is a marine vs marine game, it should translate well. I will be working up a deck of cards for both the loyalists and the secessionists as well as cards for each of the specific chapters we will be using in our group. Once I get my first Mantis Warriors tactical squad finished I'll be doing a Fire Hawks vs Mantis Warriors boarding action in my space ship interiors here http://thisveryblog.blogspot.com/2016/02/horus-heresy-project-betrayal-at-calth.html (http://thisveryblog.blogspot.com/2016/02/horus-heresy-project-betrayal-at-calth.html)

Anyway, here are the Fire Hawks.

Also, here is my first Mantis Warriors tactical squad ready for paint. I'm excited to get these finished.

And last but not least, here is a sneak peak at the first of the Fire Hawks squad. I'm awaiting some bits in the mail to finish this squad off.

Awesome stuff - where did you source your MkVI heads and shoulder pads?  I'm not going to have enough shoulder pads for my few MkVI heads...(sigh).

I got all the pads and helmets from the new Forgeworld MK VI Corvus packs. They're expensive but I felt the project was worth the extra cost. Beyond that you can get a lot of bits from Hobby Titan, though you often end up with stuff you don't need.

I picked up 6 of the Forgeworld MK VI packs and then used the legs from the new GW tactical and assault boxes to add variety.

Absolutely gorgeous. Seeing your recipe for the red I'm ashamed, I tried to assemble a squad of these some time ago and I wasn't able to replicate the proper colours. So my admiration!

Thanks guys!

Elbows: yep. Unfortunately. It's my once a year splurge. Fortunately I have a very patient wife  lol

Cypher: I'd love to see some Astral Claws!

Suber: Thanks! It took me about a half dozen test models to nail down that process. I really like the chapter and how Forgeworld updated the original color scheme.

Great stuff, I like the colours on the Fire Hawks.  :-*
Nice to see someone doing Badab War, it was one of my favorite "historical" conflicts, even before the Forgeworld book. I'm (slowly, very slowly) building a small Howling Griffons force myself.

Me too. The Mantis Warriors were the first large force I had back in the Rogue Trader days and remained one of my favorites. I really liked how Forgeworld took the Badab War from a short article in White Dwarf and filled out the background to a pretty epic tale and setting in its own right. I like how they updated a lot of the old chapter colors too.

Howling Griffons are a cool chapter too. I'd love to see them when you paint some up!

Howdy! I updated the blog with the first Mantis Warrior painted from the new models. I found the process and color I was looking to achieve. So now I should be able to crank some of these puppies out.

Thanks! Doing the helmet made me really nervous. I know I'll have to do at least 40 of them which I'm not looking forward to...

I'm thinking of cutting a stencil on thin clear plastic to trace onto the helmet with a sharp pencil.

Quick update. Getting through the tactical squad at a good pace  (for me). Missile launcher and flamer, Fire Hawks sergeant, and the missing terminator with heavy flamer finished this week.

I'll be sticking to beakies for my own forces. A friend of mine is going to be doing Red Scorpions in mk 4 using the new Horus Heresy plastics and another friend is working on Marines Errant in mk 7. Another yet is doing Lamenters in beakie.

Hopefully our forces will be coming together soon. The project will start out small and work up to bigger battles. We're hoping to do fleet battles using Battlefleet Gothic too but that's going to take a lot longer.

Keep up the great work.

Wonderful stuff.  The simple lines of the Mk6 works so damn well with the simple paint scheme of the Mantis fellas.  Really is such a nice subdued and simple/classy scheme...much better than the "crank it to 11" sculpts and paintjobs of the modern 40K era marines.

Thanks guys!

Elbows: I love the beakies and many of the old chapter schemes. It has been really fun redoing them with the new models. I haven't been this motivated to paint in a long time.

Pictors: Unfortunately I won't be out at Cold Wars this year.  I would love to run a game using Betrayal at Calth at a convention some time once I get more of both forces finished. I'm also still interested in running something with you for Horus Heresy. I wonder where things are going to end up with the Host closing down.

Here is a little battle report using the minis I have completed (which wasn't much, but enough for a game of Betrayal at Calth!). It's a Fire Hawks attempt to kill a Mantis Warriors captain on the nuclear wasteland world of Bellepheron's Fall (which saw vicious fighting during the Badab War).

Just a wonderful project all-round!  :-* Good painting and modelling, nice terrain, a nice setting/fictional conflict.
How are you liking the Calth rules "in the wild" (aka outside of the game board)? Could they be adapted to handle more 40k troop types/races?

Thanks! I'm really loving the Badab War setting. What's not to love about Marines vs Marines without chaos? (which is still stuck in GW's 90s metal style).

I like the Calth rules a lot on the hexless tabletop. They work really well with very few changes. I did play around with Orks and IG a little but with the way the Ballistic skill is worked into the dice itself (2 sides are hits and one side is a crit-which means no matter what, your model has a BS that hits on a 4,5,6). This makes it hard to justify for Orks and IG. Other than that, the Armor and Stamina stats can be adjusted to suit other races. But since a normal marine in Calth rules is Armor 2 and Stamina 2, there's not a lot of room except to give other races a 1 or 0. I think it could be done, but I'm not sure it would work all that well.

Update! Contemptor dreadnought for my Fire Hawks. I wasn't sure about this model when I first got it, but now that's painted I knod of like it. The pose is still pretty static, but it's not bad. I made swappable gun arms using magnets. I'll mostly use the Multi Melta as that is much more Fire Hawk like.

The front of the sarcophagus says "Burn Them All, The Emperor Will Know His Own". I shall be calling him Trogdon the Incinerator  lol

I also didn't realize just how BIG these Contemptors were. He towers over my Mantis Warriors dread.

Enjoy!

That's nice! I usually don't like the Contemptor model quite much, but you made this one look great!!

A few days ago I had no idea what the Badab War was, and just assumed Badab Black was another nonsense name for some overpriced pots of paint.

Now I have found what must be my favorite bit of 40k flufftext!  Your Firehawks in particular look so damn good I actually looked through the old hobby closet, found a bunch of early 2nd edition marines that my dad had purchased and then discarded, and now I think I'm going to try and copy your colors.  I looked up the original, and the black shoulderpad and accents really brings your unit together.

Seriously, though, why am I only just learning about these chapters now?  The way the TO&E reads, the Badab War feels more like a Battletech campaign with different and colorful units moving throughout a wide operational zone attempting to accomplish strategic objectives than it does a Warhammer 40k grim and nonsensical clash of infantry when orbital bombardment or airstrikes would make more sense.

Very nice lovely brush work. I much prefer the Contemptor's design myself looks more space marine like to me than the other box on legs design

Wow! Well, thank you and I'm glad the fluff and my efforts could inspire you! The Badab War is so full of 40k gaming opportunities that go beyond the ridiculous grim dark we are used to with 40k. You are exactly right. It has strategic and tactical nuances. I especially like that it's a civil war between Imperial forces that doesn't involve chaos (though Huron falls to Chaos in the end). The idea that a section of the Imperium could secede due to genuine political issues and not malice or evil is really neat. I love the different campaigns and how the chapters are defending worlds for strategic reasons.

If you haven't read them, the Imperial Armour books on the Badab War are simply excellent background reading. Though a lot of the same stuff is on the Badab War 40k Wiki.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm going to really be expanding these forces over the next year. I hope to expand my Badb War project to the naval battles using Battlefleet Gothic (if it ever gets rereleased as has been planned). Hopefully a genuine campaign down the road.
