I'm a little late to the frostgrave party it seems, but better late than never.
Really happy to see there are releases planned right up to November, this should be a nice paced project for me that can last this year and beyond.
It's been well over 15 years since I jumped in a bought the basics for a new game so this is quite a treat, and takes me back to being a teenager when I played games workshop skirmish games.
My initial loot courtesy of Waterstones, North Star and Copplestone Castings...

... and the first batch of terrain! All scratch built from nasty polystyrene and some high quality kappa foam (firmer version of foamboard). Few licks of paint, a cheap and cheerful black wash followed by a couple of drybrush layers. Next up on it I'll do some inking and shading for weathering followed by my first ever attempt at snow. Naturally i'll do a little test before I desecrate the terrain with it.
The mat is a horrible table cover thing I found in Dunelm, the underside was a nice white fabric however. It's the right rigidity so when I stack books or boxes under it the hills and countours are nice and firm, and minis grip to the slopes perfectly.

I sculpt a lot so when I start making the minis I expect I'll be doing lots of custom bits and pieces! Before that though... painting the wizards and snow trolls!
-
Great start. I love these scale of those ruins. Perfect. :)
-
Wow love it all!!!
-
I look forward to watching your progress :)
-
Your ruins look great! :D
-
Those ruins are awesome, right out of the artwork IMO. :)
-
The ruins look awesome!
Andres
-
Spot on terrain you have there.. jealousy has got my brain doing backflips trying to figure out how to copy your look of the ruined city?
Weez
-
That terrain is exceptional -really impressive! o_o So impressed.
cheers
-
Did you make that scenery yourself? Did you enter my mind and made my dream scenery or something?
-
Brilliant! :-*
-
Spill the beans, how did you make that scenery!
-
Spill the beans, how did you make that scenery!
He ain't talking until you tell us what boxed set comes with "Forgotten Pacts" and whether we will get a wooly rhino. :D
-
Lol. Blackmail, I love it.
Great looking scenery. Thanks for sharing
-
Really nice terrain! Very nice sculpting there.
I may steal some of this :)
-
Any chance of finding out how you made the terrain? Looks awesome!
-
Great terrain!
-
Great terrain!, I would second any input in how you went about sculpting it.
-
Thanks folks!
I'm planning a second round of terrain making (walls, towers, bridges, etc.) so I'll try and do a little tutorial at a later stage! It's all quite simple but pics and step by step stages will explain it better.
My initial painting has been a bit of chore and I struggled with some of these minis. I'm also having teething problems with a new camera I bought on Friday (in truth I need to take time to calibrate it to my light tent). These pics are all still WIP, few finishing touches and refinements required, then I need to figure out how I'll do the bases.
- Trolls and husky are form Copplestone. I bought 8 huskies and will make a husky sled for the Sigilists!
- Wizards are all North Star.
- The ice demons things are from achtung cthulhu, I thought they would make good frost demons or ice elementals or something.
- Graveyard and bases are from Renedra.

Lovely work! Especially like the green you've achieved on the Sigilist Apprentice and the blue on the Elementalist!
I'm struggling to find the right combination of blues for ice and think my paint selection is deficient! Can I ask which blues you used?
-
Those icy guys are brilliant!!
-
Very nice work here! I'm especially looking forward to your fantastic terrain creation process ... ;D
-
I'm struggling to find the right combination of blues for ice and think my paint selection is deficient! Can I ask which blues you used?
Lothern blue from games workshop, dark blue wash and white for highlights!
Few items to show here as I practiced photographing the set up, still not nailed it yet. By the time it's all finished though I should be good at the pics.
Snow effect was bicarbonate of soda, white paint and pva. I'll do all the terrain with it over the next week or so. Need to perhaps add some at the base of the terrain to transition it to the game mat better.

The white fabric is the underside. about 4'/6'.

-
outstanding work! really looking forward to your tutorials.
-
very cool.. played my first game of frostgrave on sunday and lost!!

Love that terrain and tips!
Best paint job I've seen on that snow troll / yeti mini. I am ordering one of these and will paint with your's as a guide.

Wow, I really expected those to be from pink foam, not the expanded stuff. Extra impressive to me now. :o

I've copied the colour scheme from the Frostgrave rule book!
Fur is bleached bone highlighted with white.
Skin base is a dark blue/grey with successive highlights of the base mixed with bleached bone.
-
Excellent work; love the terrain especially!
-
I'll come back and edit this post with the follow up stages..
This is part 1 of the terrain how to - building it.
Materials are very simple: expanded polystyrene, kappa foam and a 5mm sheet of dense polystyrene.
- These are leftover parts and I've simply played around with the the configuration until I found something I liked. The lintels/shelves on the vertical wall are purely there to pile up snow on and look interesting
- The brickwork is a steel ruler pressed into the material (I've drawn it in with pen so it shows up on camera). The kappa foam takes this very well.
- I've used PVA glue and some pins to hold it all together while it dries. The pins will be pulled out once its dry.

Part 2- weathering and texture.
- I've used a steel ruler to score in some cracks and bashed on the stonework
- The texture is simply sand mixed with PVA into a paste, and applied with a small spatula. I usually try to get it into the corners, as well as filling in the gaps on small rubble piles

Part 3- painting
This is the undercoat:
- First coat is some windsor and newton grey acrylic paint mixed with a little PVA
- A second coat of the same mix is applied, with a tiny addition of some painting textute paste

Washing
- Mix up a small amount of black acrylic paint with water. to make it almost the consistency of a watercolour paint. To that add 2 drops of washing up liquid to add tension to the mix, otherwise the wash wont stick and pool properly!
- Was the entire piece with the mix, good idea to put 2 or 3 kithen paper towels underneath to soak up the excess

Once the wash had dried thoroughly/over night, time for the drybrushing. I do it in 3 stages with the basecoat grey as the main colour, and each stage with a successive increase in white.

Wow you make it look so easy. :o
I think I've just built lots of terrain over the years, I'm not shy about giving it away/selling it/binning it as I get better... to make room for new stuff.
Stage 2 of the previous tutorial post updated. I'll start painting this weekend all going to plan!

Do you think that foamcore with the paper removed would be a suitable replacement for the 5mm dense polystyrene? I simply have not found a North American source for the stuff. I have also never heard of kappa foam before. ???

Seconded! Also thanks for posting some of your steps M.O.T.N. I seem to lack the creative eye at piecing stuff together.

Yes. Kapa, only 1x P, looks to be a denser version of the standard foam board and a slight color variance.
Do a Google search for "Kapa foamboard" will result in some nice info.

Why haven't I commented on this awesome thread yet? Fanatastic work - bravo!

Thanks all.
Kappa foam in the UK - http://modelshop.co.uk/Shop/Raw-Materials/Foamboard/
To be honest normal foamboard does the same thing, just not as sharp with the detail.

I know it' not recommended we name our warband members, on account of them being wiped out my magicians and such... but after doing the bulk of my building and sculpting, I really want to!
I'm trying hard to focus on two themed warbands at the moment, whilst my imagination runs rampant thinking about how I could keep building and make unit based skirmish forces too....
I have the Frostgrave soldiers, Cultists and also bought a Fireforge Teutonic infantry set to supply me with lots of parts. There's a couple of statuesque miniatures female heads in there and also some old warhammer empire regiment parts too (the perry twins sculpts, one of my all time favorite kits)
Here's my Sigilist warband.

Trying to get to grips with Paintshop pro 8 and knocked up a draft painting tutorial. Manipulation of the white undercoat stage failed me, but when I do a proper version with commentary I'll fix it.

Very nice conversion work. Adding GS chainmail to a cultist body is a brilliant idea. Consider it stolen.

Here's my weekends painting endeavors. I've taken step by step photographs for all 4 of these miniatures as I went along, including the paint's used, for a total of 40 images!
Not a completely altruistic move... it will come in handy as a reference for when I come back to paint more in the future!

They're brilliant - bravo!
-
Very good stuff going on here - loads of inspiration!
-
Great minies. Especially the necromancer templar.
-
Great work on the scenery and nice tutorial. Thanks
-
Couple more pics of the warbands as they take shape. Unashamedly I've gone for some really simply colour schemes with lots of primary colours, really fun to do!
Some details still need a little work, mostly around the faces. I've added a red glaze to some noses and cheeks... it's cold after all!

Absolutely wonderful! While not the same, they somehow remind me of my own models, so I can't help but like them. Haha.
-
Man, that painting is too good. Really bright and wonderful, great work. :)
-
Now that my warband's are almost finished I'll paint up a couple of monsters, thinking of using the wight in the centre are the Lich Lord.

Time for round 2 of my Frostgrave terrain. The first lot were quite generic and plain, these pieces will be a bit more specialised.

I'm totaly fan of your paintjob. You Scenery are great too.
Stéphane
-
Really like your terrain! Starts with simple beginnings and ends up looking very detailed!
Do you coat the base foam with PVA first to give it some strength? I hate when my scenery gets bashed up when using it and storing it after putting so much effort into making and painting it.
-
Do you coat the base foam with PVA first to give it some strength?.
As part of the base coat of grey acrylic I mix in pva glue and a little texture medium. Following that another base coat, followed by a wash and then several layers of drybrushing tends to seal the whole thing up good. Oddly enough it's when you store the terrain and parts touch, the paint tends to stick together and then come off. I wrap my terrain in bubble wrap for storage!
Two images here, first one sculpts, second one the terrain status. More on this later... but it's taking shape.
Long story short - these were personal projects that have morphed into something I'll likely get produced as resin products. I'll make them as multi part as I can to open up all the conversion opportunities. They scale with Frostgrave plastics naturally.
These are my spell casters, not an attempt to make a multi part wizard kit. As designer and sculptor, that project would be brutal. I'll stick to my own generic little wizards. The guy on the right though will make a good cultist holding a torch or something, a few of them would look good at a cult gathering (summoning) that gets crashed by a couple of warbands.
Anyway, These guys might be for sale in December sometime. I'd love to do a frost giant too...
P.S. ignore the names on the corks, I changed armatures at the last minute.

Those wizards are looking sweet... I'd definitely be interested in buying some of those. Please keep us posted!

The foam (the kappa, I think you called it) that you are using to make the layered effect is genius. Your work is pretty fantastic! Using the "throw away" foam for your base building is admirable and use have used it in such a way that it hides most of the texture that normally screams "Hey! A toaster came inside of me!"
Masterfully done.
-
Splendid work! Lots of inspiration to be had from your scratchbuilding. :)
-
Wow! That scenery looks awesome.
-
Great stuff all round here. Terrain, kitbashing, original miniatures and painting. Well done. Enjoying this thread very much :)
-
I really love your scenery ! Very unique looking with stage and underground path.
-
I love the terrain! Nice job!
The figures are gorgeous, too. I'm wondering, though, wouldn't some snow on their shoulders tie them in with the bases?
I wonder how we would paint that, maybe some gloss mixed with white and drybrushed on broad surfaces, not just the edges? I've never tried it. Now I'm curious.
-
:o :o :o :o :o
Absolutely stunning work on everything. I am quite envious of all these projects that everyone's doing. I have very little time to do any hobby stuff right now, and it looks like I will be spending even more hours at my third job starting in January. When I get home after working all day at my first job, I have time to make dinner, eat and then leave to go out to my second job. By the time I get home at 10:00 pm every night, I am so tired I can't see straight to paint, build, or anything. Your project is so nice so thank you for sharing so that I can at least dream of this wonderful hobby of ours.
Regards,
Hitman

Thanks for the feedback all!
My hobby time is really suffering at the moment, managed to do a little sculpting recently though... I'm not working to a plan, just kit bashing characters. I'm unsure if Anvil Industry will have time to do my wizards in resin so I may need to commission some holds and metal casts myself. More on that another day.
Image links from this post broken, thanks Photobucket...
-
That cultist guy is absolutely amazing! I wouldn't mind having him in my collection!
-
Great work - I love kitbashing figures myself.
No one ever makes one that's "perfect."
-
I somehow missed this thread before, so I'm glad it's back at the top! Loving the minis and terrain you have here. Well done!
-
Really impressed by your terrains and sculpting skills. Just brilliant :)
-
Much amazingness - great stuff!
-
The conversions are awesome and the terrain still impresses me to no end. The scale of the stuff is Lovecraft cyclopean and speaks of ancient horror more than generic abandoned towns. I love this thread.
-
Your terrain turned out really good. Loving the bold painting of your minis as well.
-
This is a fantastic thread.... your mini conversions are wonderful, and the terrain is simple but so effective!!
-
Received my Frostgrave Folio Nickstarter this morning, brilliant book and amazing value considering the miniatures that came with it!

Nice simple and effective paint jobs
-
Looks like a very effective way of batch painting undead. The other minis are great too!
-
Nice.
-
What a gem of a thread, inspiring scenery and crisp clean painted mini's.
Got to love the "grey" zombies!
-
Excellent stuff. The warbands that you have worked on so far are very good. Looking forward to more!
-
Looks like a very effective way of batch painting undead. The other minis are great too!
Just what I was thinking!
-
Looks like a very effective way of batch painting undead.
It definitely is, I did 24 zombies like this in a few hours.
-
I really like the zombies. I have that set and am trying to figure out how to paint them up. Great job.
-
This is a great thread - I don't check in on the Frostgrave board enough. Love your sculpting, it's really concise - I'm still waiting for you to finish those 17mm sculpts from a couple of years ago! Really great stuff here.
-
The zombies look great, they fit the setting perfectly.
-
I've had some Photobucket issues so lost the last few posts images... I bit the bullet and paid £100 odd to save my 3000+ images spread across multiple miniature forums.
Anyway back on topic... I recently revamped all my terrain. After looked at lots of reference images I noticed that snowy stone castles are actually wet stone castles, covered in lots of grime and streaks.
Next I want to add some dead and withered foliage in places and then consider my desired snow effect. My previous effort looks like someone dropped yoghurt on the ruin... alas I decided to scrap it and will use it as a test bed for future ideas.
This is definitely a seasons game for me :)

That weathering looks great. Nice terrain collection!
-
wow - fantastic scenery.
-
That looks fantastic - what's it made from?
-
Thank you.
Mostly just the horrible low quality white polystyrene! Clad with some foam board in places.
The effect is really achieved by crudely scoring and indenting the polystyrene, followed by textured paint and sand/rubble in all the corners and cracks. I think subtle layering is the key effect to finish it off, both with painting and texture. Selective dry brushing also plays a part, as does shading in the recesses.
Two more layers to come, dead vegetation and then snow.

Apologies for the threadomancy!

I just painted a bunch of the same minis. Yours look way better. :-* What horses did you use? I like how those riders turned out.
-
Apologies for the threadomancy!
Don’t apologise - wouldn’t have seen your scratchbuilt terrain otherwise.
:)
Particularly like the Cultist cavalry!
-
Thanks! The horses are from Warlord Games pike a shotte range. The riders I sculpted, using Frostgrave Cultist arms and heads as parts.
-
Dude, these are fantastic. Love the cultist army!
-
That’s a great collection and very nicely painted indeed 8)
-
8) way cool ...especially like the cultist with the bird n torch...great stuff!!!
-
Having a load of these to paint up these so the paint jobs are ins[piration.
But before that IU have 6 AARs to write up after editing the p~100 photos. :-/
-
The cultist outriders are great. How did you put those together?
-
Wow, those are great. Too tricky to pick which ones I like best!
-
Always inspiring to see your work. I love the outriders. You also have the skill and ability to truly capture blacks.
-
The cultist outriders are great. How did you put those together?
Horses are from Warlord games (Pike and Shotte range), the riders are all scratch sculpts except for the heads and right arms with weapons - they are from the Frostgrave cultist sprue.
-
lovely work.
mounted cultists are inspired.
-
Great stuff! Very inspirational! :o
-
Excellent stuff. The white hair on the crowbow woman looks amazing.
-
These are wonderful! There is a real sense of menace about those cultists.
-
Wow those cultists are fantastic!
-
Hello,
Excellent paintjob on these bands !!
Nikko
-
Two of the three portents have been observed...
- It's freezing outside
- A Christmas aisle has appeared at the supermarket
The third (snow on the hills) has not yet been sighted, but it can't be far off.
It's therefore the season of Frostgrave. This one however is going to be different after I heard those ominous words...
I'd like to try painting one of your miniatures
OK yep we can do it together, I'll show you, what would you like to paint?
Yes please lets do that, not a robot or anything though.
You mean space marine, how about a wizard?
Yes that would be cool.
I have a little box of miniatures for this game called Frostgrave...
Two new warbands have appeared for the winter 2019 campaign, hopefully starting in about two weeks.
There's some minor conversions and sculpting in places because I couldn't resist... and miltipart kitbashes always need a little gap filling. There's also a few minor thematic elements to set the warbands apart, like the Elementalists all having open hands vs the Necromancers having clenched fists, but it will be the paintjobs that ultimately set them apart.
This is for a complete beginner to paint so the grey undercoat with a light spray dusting of white helps bring out the details... and does the bulk of the work for the bases.

This is my second Necromancer warband, next time I'll need to do something different...
-
After completely forgetting about your insanely awesome terrain pieces, I am glad that you made a new post to remind me of it.
Now, maybe THIS year I will do something too! :D
-
I like the look of those warbands, really cool!
-
A great thread, looking forward to your next batch of paint jobs

-
Absolutely splendid creations. Well done :-*
Looking forward to seeing them in glorious Technicolor.
-
Excellent work. The mounted cultists are brill
-
Thanks all. Some pressing sculpting deadlines to hit but hoping to get painting these early next week.
-
Very late, both to your thread and to Frostgrave, but now trying to catch up and loving both. Inspiring . .. :-*
-
Thanks.
I've done a ranger and some armoured skeletons as a warm up (and break from painting my Spartans). The ranger is really for Rangers of Shadowdeep but the winter theme allows me to share terrain and minis from Frostgrave. I'll likely do spring/winter collection next year.

Excellent work.......
-
Particularly like the deaduns
:)
-
Nice work on the ranger. The undead lads look great too

Today I dusted off the Frostgrave terrain and did some quick pictures. Some are rough and out of focus unfortunately. I think I'll need a full Sunday afternoon with good natural light to do this properly, followed by cropping and editing them (played with the colour balance) . The background is simply polystyrene sheets but I'l like to make some proper backgrounds one day.
90% of everything fits into one of these Ikea boxes, but since I'm expanding into forests and some rocky crags (WIP) i'll need to stretch it out to two. I'm planning on a large centre piece of terrain in the new year, it will find use in Frostgrave but it's actually for another project and range of miniatures I'll be doing.

Thanks.
I'll do a proper tutorial for the next thing I build... I'll just say it now, it's going to be a circular keep perched on rocks with a stone bridge leading up to the gate. Kind of like Helms Deep. The keep will only be half circular (the front) and the back will be open so I can do multiple interior levels. I have the materials prepped it's just a matter of finding the time!
-
Wonderful. It looks super cool, especially the street on pillars.
-

Thanks, it actually makes a good bridge for playing across a frozen river! Just line up the walls and some trees along the banks. It's in two parts and all the terrain is the same height so lots of different configurations.
-
This is absolutely gorgeous terrain. Really inspires me to do the same. Minis are beautifully painted as well. Will be following this thread with interest!

Well my gaming plans didn't come to fruition over the last few months, but I'm now getting on with painting up my latest warbands.
I've always done dark and moody miniatures but I'm leaning towards a more bright and whimsical, almost Terry Pratchet feel for my Frostgrave stuff these days.
Behold my Necromancer and his companions, setting out to gather treasure and riches as a means to found a new school of Necromancy.

Argh I can't see! image host must be blocked in China :-[

cracking stuff.

Great job on the latest warband - love the terrain as well

Lovely terrain, the warband is brilliant too :-*
-
whimsical Terry Pratchett is a great idea! they look lovely!
-
Great terrain and figures - must put out my frostgrave table again sometime
-
So very nice these guys! Like the color choice.
-
Thanks all.
Some more snaps today, fleshing out my bestiary, treasure tokens and the start of a new Elementalist warband. Quick and cheerful paint jobs all round, suitable for gaming with.
I've had those plastic Warhammer Quest rats, and plastic potion bottles from MB Games Dark World (now on the treasure tokens) kicking around for well on 25 years... so finally painting them is amusingly cathartic.

Brilliant thread! Great brushwork, kit bashing and terrain building. The mounted Cultists in particular are inspirational.
-
:o
That daemon is gorgeous! Impressive work, really like the heroes too, nice blues.
-
Wow love all your stuff!!! Do you have a wip of the mounted cultists?
-
Had to go back to page 1 and read through the whole thread. Brilliant collection Sir! The scenery, scratchbuilt Cultist cavalry and conversions and paintjobs are all topnotch :-*
-
Wow love all your stuff!!! Do you have a wip of the mounted cultists?
Thanks for the nice comments. I don't have any WIP images I'm afraid, from memory it was mostly sculpted with plastic head and arms from the Frostgrave Culstists. Horses were Warlord Pike and Shotte plastics.
-
So much good stuff again. I love the colour palette on your undead!
-
Here's a load of images for my latest Frostgrave minis. Some big Reaper Bones stuff and the odd conversion.

fantastic all round - and the barbarian orcs are brilliant.

Difficult to know where to start saying how good these are, Neal. Hope one day in better times to see those naughty orcs stealing treasure from my Frozen City.

Thank all.
@supremelittlenessdesigns - it will be a long time coming when it happens!

A couple of snaps from my first game of second edition.

Excellent way of spending four hours in lockdown as the sun goes down! Frostgrave is as good as you say.
"Post game my girlfriend suddenly had a look of realisation when I discussed experience. It all made sense now. She was under the impression she had to fill out her experience of the game in the warband box roster."
To be fair to your girlfriend, you wrote a comprehensive impression of your own personal experience of the game!

Haha, touche' Michael. All good practice for me anyway, for when we finally get to play on your terrain.

Sounds like we have another player to add to our ranks!

Brilliant kitbashing!

Lovely creations 8)

Those Orcs - especially Gul'dan, I mean the wizard - are just sublime. Fantastic work. Made me look at that Oathmark kit completely differently, great job.
-
Agreed. Fantastic bit of kitbashing. They, all three, look great.
-
:o nice work....fear the orcs!!!
-
Thanks. The Warcraft reference was entirely unintentional - the horns are orc bows. It must have been in my subconscious but I don't really do online gaming or keep up with the designs/trends.

Well done! Did you do the walls in one piece or block by block?

Well done! Did you do the walls in one piece or block by block?
One piece sheets, I'm not a fan of individual block by block, doesn't look good and must be a total nightmare to do.
-
Nice work. Interesting blog.
One piece sheets, I'm not a fan of individual block by block, doesn't look good and must be a total nightmare to do.
Block by block is how our world has been constructed, is civilization a total nightmare ?
On your blog you mentioned you like YouTube.
Check out a channel there called Bard's Craft.
He may or may not change your own opinion of assembling individual foam model buildings block by block, however thousands of his subscribers might disagree with your statement.
This past year was spent examining and collecting photo reference material from other crafters on Pinterest, YouTube, and other hobby related forums.
I am beginning to suspect that many YouTube channel gurus and online Bloggers do the same; then under the guise of producing and posting tutorials deliberately fail to credit others for the techniques and idea concepts they "borrowed" and inappropriately pass off as their own.
Intellectual property is an illusion with the shelf life of a banana.
What does or doesn't look good depends upon personal biased perception.
A total nightmare would be not ever having tried and tested out anything new, nor or attempting to do anything different at all based upon some one else's opinion that has never tried.
-
That looks like an interesting channel.. I do listed to audiobooks or youtube when crafting (but never hobby related stuff).
I've been doing this for over 20 years, I've built block by block many times and never took to it completely. A single sheet of XPS, textured with a real piece of quartz stone, then imprinted with square shapes to give the bricks depth is the most effective method I've landed on. XPS sheets from firedragon actually do some of this for you so it's a massive time saver.
Pretty sure some of my techniques I gleaned from the Lord of the Rings extended edition DVD's circa 2002-3, all the 'making of' production interviews they did with Weta Workshop. The techniques I'm using are close to the ones they built the Minas Tirith models with.
And absolutely yes - most youtubers or bloggers learned the stuff elsewhere... and techniques change and evolve over time, anyone trying to claim ownership for them is a bit silly. Commercially bought terrain and now 3d printing are evolving the landscape of this somewhat.
David Neat is also the source for many advanced modellers methods. Wargaming terrain builders are generally second order when compared to actual model makers, even architectural model makers.
-
I see you've edited your post since I replied.
I wouldn't compare model making to the rise of civilisation, or building the great wall of china... they don't have sheets of bricks to cut with hot wire and affix with pva glue in the real wold haha.
-

Even if millions disagreed, I wouldn't mind :)

I prefer whimsical texture with a sprinkle of disorder in my masonry, it adds content and character.

Very nice build, I would like to see some photos of the completed buildings in detail if you can.
In the block by block vs sheet debate I have done both over the years and still use both today. IMO it is really how much bang do you get for the effort. Block by block is quite labour intensive when building a model and if that effort is visually lost then it is not worth it.
Just my two cents.

I agree that applies to timber framed housing, shops, barracks, etc... However for tumbled stone fortifications built from larger than human sized blocks the intensive titanic effort might appear quite stunning .

I've used Firedragon games products a number of times with results I am happy with (my BSC entry from last year (https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/44/11089-250220220120-441671892.jpeg), for example). I use them for the same reason M.O.T.N. does: looks good and saves time; although I can appreciate the satisfaction of building block-by-block and the end result can be very satisfying.

Lovely recent stuff pal, they look great.

I have a feeling Frostgrave is one of these games that I'll play for life and always wheel it out around the winter time...
This thing is from Steamforged games Epic Encounters series, the box set called Halls of the Orc King. It's a snowy/winter themed set of miniatures. They're all way too big, more like games workshop 'heroic' style size. But, they will make good big monster types.
This one here is perfect for some kind of stone troll, which can join my slowly forming Orc warband.

And not to be outdone, I'm going bigger with my next painting session... with a true Mountain King and an Ice Dragon. The Dragon is from the Reaper Bones range. I forget where the giant mini is from, I ordered it off Etsy months ago, super sized.

looking forward to seeing those big-uns painted.

The phrase 'christmas decorations' was mentioned the other day, my brain equates that to "more Frostgrave terrain".

wow, great stuff.
-
Truly exceptional stuff. This is a massively inspiring log, thanks for sharing.
-
Wow! I really like those new buildings.
-
Thanks all.
These latest 3 terrain pieces painted up relatively easy, and they seem to configure in a few different ways quite nicely (totally unplanned).
The entire collection now needs details like signs, railings and the odd crate. I really want to add icicles and snow to everything but it's quite a delicate procedure so I might experiment with photoshopping these images before I jump in with glue and artificial snow... I've never been satisfied with my winter efforts on terrain in the past.
