I'm currently working on a science fiction army that's heavily influenced by Napoleonic and early to mid (or even late) Victorian style. I'm using it for 40k as Imperial Guard (because that's what they play around here) but I'm using lots of historic figures as well as steampunk miniatures and the like-whatever takes my fancy really :)
The images below are some infantry (Perry Austrians+Victrix artillery) and death trumpets (used as flamers) from Meridian miniatures.
-
Now on to the current big project for this army-a 'knight titan'. In this army I decided to use dinosaurs with armoured howdah's on their backs instead of ordinary tanks (as 'Venus 1889' is a Jumanji like death world with lots of dangerous critters-including giant reptiles that HAPPEN to look like the great reptilian beasts of holy Terra's distant past). Napoleonic/Victorian soldiers riding into battle on dinosaurs makes me smile so it had to be done (or at least attempted).
Never to do things by halves the first vehicle to be attempted will be a large one, counting as an Imperial Knight ( a big battle robot in 40k). A big inspiration for this project comes from many of the amazing scratch builds that I've seen on the forum here.
This is my first real scratch build so fingers crossed it'll go okay. Attached is a very early pic of the basic structure (I've done a lot more since this pic-need to take more photos to show where I'm up to now).
The T-rex is by a company called 'Papo'-I was going to re-paint it, but I may not bother as the paint job on the dino is quite good :)
-
I'll just be in awe for a bit, if you don't mind.
Doug (took three times to spell my own name...)
-
Thanks-glad you like what I've done so far :) I hope the end result comes out well. It seems to be going okay. Some of it's a bit wobbly (my skill at cutting plasticard could stand some improvement), but overall I think it'll be acceptable when it's done :)

Those ARE nice - looking forward to see the big guy take shape 8) 8) 8)

Yep, me too. ;D

Bloody marvelous Sir..
Wolt
-
Thanks, chaps-I'll try not to disappoint :)
-
Good idea and great start. Your troops are nicely adapted/painted looking forward to seeing your forces develop!
-
I like this a lot.
-
Thanks, chaps :) Did a lot more on it this evening. May even get to painting some time in the next week or so :)
-
Lovely work on all the troops.
-
And that Knight!
-
Thanks! :D
-
I think it needs more rivets...
(BWAHAHAHAHA)
I kid, I kid...love the absolute fearless build!
-
Fantastic - love the concept with the tyrannosaurus just imagine being up in the crows nest when it starts running :o
Superb build and figures

Everything is awesome. Please keep us updated
-
Will do. I hope to start painting tomorrow :)
-
That t-rex is amazing. Can't wait to see it painted up.
-
Your troops look great!
And that dinosaur howdah... marvelous!
-
Good heavens! :o You, sir, are quite insane. Well done! ;D
-
Done...well, basically done. I'm going to add a few more layers to the water effect on the base and may add a chain leading to the dino's mouth-but it's basically done. Need to get back to painting regular infantry again now. It was great fun to make and I'll definitely be making more-perhaps something smaller next time though ( a 'counts as' tank rather than a knight titan) :)
-
And one more pic for the road :)
-
Lovely build utter maddness very VSF
Love the paint job
What is steam powered on the vehicle though?
-
Total madness. Excellent work!
-
Obviously the turret needs steam assistance to turn!
This is wonderful stuff!
-
Yes, that's right-the steam engine powers the turret and also the 'Cavorite gravity engine'-which reduces the weight of the machine by 90%-allowing the T-rex to be able to carry it ;)
-
FANTASTIC!
-
Totes Amazeballs
-
Wonderful idea, and extremely well played!
-
Truly bad, great idea lovin the TRex idea.
-
What a corker! Bravo Sir :D
-
Honestly At the start of this project I thought you were mad. Now I am sure you are mad, but in a kind of Eccentric Genius way. Consider my an avid follower of your thread....show me more!
-
Thanks, guys-there will be more-but nothing quite so big and exciting for a while-got to get a lot of infantry and the like painted before I attempt another big scratch build :)
-
What I've been up to since last time. Three infantry platoons- Royal Guard (a mix of Perry Austrians and Victrix British), Venusian Highlanders(Victrix Napoleonic Highlanders) and Jungle Legion (a mix of Warlord Zulu Wars Brits and Perry Sudan Brits). I have a lot of painting to do.
-
'Cavorite gravity engine'-which reduces the weight of the machine by 90%-allowing the T-rex to be able to carry it ;)
That makes sense.
But how do they steer?
Will there be a stick with a goat on it hanging in front of Rex's face? Or a skull cap with electrodes?
What make is Rex?
-
The latter makes more sense but I like the goat idea a lot more XD
The dino is from 'Papo'-who are a French toy manufacturer. They make excellent stuff and I'll be using more of their figures in future I think. Another big war engine mounted on the back of a brachiosaurus may not be out of the question. This channel was useful in informing my purchase (videos like this are handy for judging rough model size)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niZF7OYbAL8
-
More madness-Some rhino artillery (these are giant Venusian Rhinoceri)
-
Brilliant concept superbly executed! :o :-* o_o ;D
I don' t know which method of control I prefer, the electrodes offer a crazed mad scientist connection, but the good old fashioned simplicity of a goat on a stick, tickles my funnybone! lol
We need AARs ASAP! :D
BTW, Where did you get the guns?
-
Too much awesomeness :-*
-
Alltogether grandtastic! :-*
-
BTW, Where did you get the guns?
I second that question. Also, everything looks fantastic!
-
Update-the Rhino artillery are well underway. Just need to paint the crewmen for two of them. The guns are from Victoria miniatures-very nice models, not too expensive and they threw in some exras- highly recommended :)

This is an amazing and inspirational project. Keep on at it, it might re-ignite my VSF mojo :)

Great stuff - well done sir!

Looking back over my initial reply, I realize you misunderstood me just a bit.
Oh, yes, the T-Rex-mobile is utter madness incarnate. But the soldiers are a glorious whole, though I did stop to admire the 'flamers' a bit. However, it was the idea of taking this to a 40K table that, indeed, clinched my speechlessness. Hear hear!

Well, he did say something about 'and may add a chain leading to the dino's mouth-'; however, I also admire your suggestion of carrot, er, goat-and-stick. 'S'uh, the shot carried away the steering mechanism! Goat's still in the air!'
As for the Cavorite engine, obviously a tired, old cast off from the Aerial Naval unit. Insufficient to carry a whole 'nef.

You are amazing... Who are these fine Venetian Gentlevenetians going up against??

Awesome thread !!!
Can't wait to see what comes next.

-
Fantastic! I am really enjoying this thread and the inventiveness of your builds
-
Going has been a little slow as I've been distracted by other projects, but I've completed the Royal Guard platoon and now have 20 out of the 55 'Jungle Legion' platoon done (pictured below)
-
SpaceGoblin ,the WOW FACTOR of this army is so huge it will find no suitable opposition in the battlefield! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I really like your gritty and realistic painting style, and your crazy ideas - as well as the flawless execution of them - are perfectly suited for the setting, CONGRATULATIONS!
And please keep posting your developments! ;)
