The first troops from my French expeditionary force on Venus:
Legion Extraterrestriale - men of a rifle section. All figures are from Warrior Miniatures. The man on the right has a leviathan gun - a single-shot weapon capable of stopping dinosaurs or ironclads. The sergeant is a conversion (flag finial from Bicorne Miniatures).
Officers of the Legion - the man on the left is a converted Foundry Darkest Africa figure, the other is from Warrior Miniatures.
Fusiliers Aerospatiale - converted Boxer Rebellion French sailiors from Redoubt. All have had their rifles reworked to match those of the Legion. Most have also been given goggles.

Venusian Parrottmen - this jezail-armed group are from a clan in French service.
-
Yikes!
My Americans are going to need reinforcements!
Nice force... even Venusian allies... eh? >:D
-
Nice one, those Warrior miniatures look a lot better than they do on their website - scrubbed up a treat! :)
-
Lovely stuff. 8)
-
This is also really, really nice stuff !
-
Just saw them. Very nice work!
-
Awesome! They look fantastic.
-
Mon Dieu, tres formidable mon Amis :) ;D
Looking forward to seeing them in the flesh.
-
So that's what you have been up to 8)
excellent stuff Dave ,
good conversions

Top Job! (I seem to repeat myself...)

Cool paintjob and excellent conversions! I like the use of those Warrior miniatures, but I am still wondering what kind of weapon the French officer is using. What might have been the intention of the sculptor? Kinda "boomstick" to put the fear of God into those Venusians? lol
I have to order some of their England Invaded stuff as well next year...
-
Excellent :-*
-
Looking good. There are times when I really wish I'd done that for my Parrotman weapons......
-
Very nice.
-
oh I realy love these theme of VSF ,fantastic.

What a superb force you are building.
Lovely!
-
oh I like these stuff !!!
-
oh yes , that is just the best, excellent , just top hole dear chap :-*
like the plants too

-
Beautiful as always. ;D you are a constant source of inspiration.
I am sorely tempted to start a french force off the back of your recent posts. :)
Those whiter than white uniforms are going to get awfully dirty, I hope they have packed plenty of Percil to keep them pristine ;)
-
These are great, Dave. The Piaf looks wonderful - did you build her from a template or was it just a "see what fits where" excercise?
Probably because I am a sad old comic book nerd, M Absinthe reminds me very strongly of Major Grubert from the Moebius comics (Metal Hurlant/Airtight Garage etc):

Probably because I am a sad old comic book nerd, M Absinthe reminds me very strongly of Major Grubert from the Moebius comics (Metal Hurlant/Airtight Garage etc):
See my other thread about construction of the Piaf. I had the resin hull anyway and wanted to keep the overall feel similar to the Space 1889 aeronefs, which fitted in with the resin hull design. I also wanted to have an open bridge as befits a light craft (which gave me an excuse to paint some crew figures and add detailing to the bridge). I had already built up a stock of London Warroom guns, so I just chose one that fitted with the concept. The rest developed from my spares box and a cheap 1/48 Sopwith Camel (the rest of the kit's wings will be used for another (larger) aeronef.
M Absinth was purely of my own invenntion. I had already painted the figure (and added a bottle of Absinthe next to his seat (having just got a taste for said substance). The name just seemed to fit. i might have to investigate Major Grubert though ....
-
Your French will be formidable. Excellent force you are building here.
[The absinth bottle is the little grey think behind his right boot?]
By the way what is your opinion on Bicorn's colonials?
-
By the way what is your opinion on Bicorn's colonials?
Bicoren stuff isn't up to the standards of the Perrys and the like, but they are worth a look at for stuff not covered by other manufacturers - e.g. Italians and their range of war correspondants (including Kipling with a notebook, wearing tweed suit, cap and scarf - perfect for Victorian London). They also make the old Connosieur figures.
Almost forgot to mention - one of the best things they do is a pack of flagstaffs with separate cast finials and cords - these really make your standard bearers into special figures.

Legion Extraterrestriale Walker:
Perfect for the Venusian jungle.
A 'stretched' GW Sentinal, with added cargo. Circular saw from a Mageknight figure.
-
The walker is nice, but the aeronef is great.
-
Hmmm it is to much 40 K for me :?
-
Hmmm it is to much 40 K for me :?
True, but it fits in with the concept of Foreign Legion equipment that I wanted to portray for my Legion Extraterrestriale: light and practical, but with minimum armour - designed for use against non-technological opposition, but not recommended for a European Battlefield.
For the next piece of Legion armour I am hoping to get something much heavier, but very 'Venusian' ;)
-
I love that model, and you have definately done it justice with your exquisite painting style.
-
Very nice as usual. :)
-
I like it, I may have another in its box if you would like it, don't think its the flamer one though,

In all of their colonies the French recruit regular units from local native troops. Venus is no exception, where the Tirailleurs Cytheriens have been formed from allied parrotmen:
Of slightly shorter stature than the 'wild' parrotmen, the parrotmen recriuited for the tirrailleurs are chosen from 'civilised' races that do not display the unpredictability of the 'wild' parrotmen. They tend to be slightly smaller than their wild cousins, but make up for this in their ability to take on military discipline. Their firepower tends to be better than that of their wild cousins, due to a combination of superior ammunition manufactured by the French and their European military training, including volley fire.

Superb stuff Dave ;D :-* :-*

Very cool!

Those are awesome!
I assume a mix of GW and Perry. Great work!

Noticed that after I posted here... ::)
:D
-
Very nice indeed!
-
Great work and thats an idea pinched.
-
Thanks for the comments guys. I'm looking to add some other native troops to give my army a unique feel. However, in the meantime I have some steamtech to work on...
-
Good to see you back Dave and posting more loveliness :)
-
Argh. I see yours and realize the wide open road not taken on mine.
Very well done, Sir.
-
Brilliant conversion and fluff as well! Love them

Latest update :
Legion Extraterrestrialle close to completion. I just need to paint one automaton. All troops are painted (although there may be some additional 'specials' later ....). Watch this space for photos ;)
-
Missed this one as well ::)
They certainly look the part Dave :-* 8)
cheers
James

Nice color selections.
-
This army is gorgeous.

I've now finished the Legion Extraterrestriale, at least for the time being.
Some new figures:
Automaton controller/mechanic, guidon bearer (a reworking of my flag bearer, using a Warflags FFL guidon with the legion name changed via Photoshop) and the first of my extraterrestrial legionaires - Legionaire Ssnark; a purple crestless skink (known as Futter's Skinks, after the anthropologist who discovered them on Cytherea)
When they landed on Cytherea, the Legion suffered from a lack of ground support steamtech suitable for operating in the Cytherean jungle. To solve this they converted commercial steam vehicles and automatons to meet their needs. The steam strider photographed previously is one example. This automaton is another:
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/8/164_23_05_11_6_38_18_2.JPG) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/8/164_23_05_11_6_38_18_1.JPG)
This heavy automaton is armed with a heavy flame thrower and a large spar torpedo, allowing it to take on all sizes of Cytherean carnivorous flora and fauna. The skull is a souvenier of the Legion's service on Mars.
The Legion so far:
In the future intend to add another infantry unit (including more aliens) and some armoured steam vehicles, but this will do for now.
My ground forces so far:
Now to get on with my air support.
-
Instead of yet more praise, as justified as it would be, I'll just point out that the automaton controller/mechanic is well-placed right next to your tag line... lol
Doug

:-*
Fantastic force!
Been lovin ever addition.
I really like the skull with the mechanical eyeball sticking out of the automaton... very clever. ;D
-
This is nice work. I like it. What did you use to convert your skink Legion Extraterrestriale?
-
@ whill4 :
The basic figure is the same as the rest of the Legion - a Warrior Miniatures 'Over The Wire/England Invaded' foreign legionaire.
I removed the gasmask, fitted a skink face and then used greenstuff to fill any gaps and build up the tunic's collar, as well as repair some damage I'd done to the kepi when removing the gasmask. The legs were cut off above the gaiters, then pinned and fitted with the lower part of the skink's legs. I opened out the vent in the back of the legionaire's tunic and fitted the skink's tail, again using greenstuff to finish off the join. Finally, I cut the hands down to 3 fingers and extended the fingers and thumb of the left hand with greenstuff.
When I add more figures to the Legion I want to include a couple of martians and a parrotman (kroot), which will be a much more challenging conversion!
-
"Futter's Skinks" Eh? ::)
lol
Excellent stuff Dave a visual feast of proper VSF, up to your usual high standards ;D
Can't wait to see them in action.
Now you had better get your thinking head on as we off to colonise another planet shortly.....it's the big red one ;)

Which is why I need to do some serious work on my air support after seeing what James has come up with :o
First up is a rework of my existing French flyer 'Piaf' (on the painting table at the moment), followed by a 1-man scout gyrocopter (next for painting after the Piaf) and then it will be back to completing my big flyer. I also need to have some serious thoughts about heavy anti-nef weapons.
BTW - how are your plans for 'new look' martians coming along?
-
Brilliant work Dave!
-
Great collection! I think you, Froggy, and Ray should have at it.
-
Next time either of you is in charleston, I'm up for it.
-
Love the additions!
-
Coming along nicely 8)
I might have missed it but do you have plans for any cavalry of any sort?
cheers
James

Blimey, the aerial arms race is really taking off (No pun intended) I had better get my skates on, Yikes! :o
Martians coming along nicely but with the usual hiccups!
-
I might have missed it but do you have plans for any cavalry of any sort?
I have the Chasseurs a Vapeur based and undercoated. However, these are cavalry in name only, as they are not mounted on animals (although they will be VERY mobile, hence being classed as cavalry).
I am also considering of raising a cavalry unit mounted on Cytherean beasts ;)
-
Ooo, do tell ;)
cheers

Heroes of the Legion:

The Legion so far:
The Legion is now coming close to a conclusion. I want to add a hero figure, some kind of light support weapon and a couple more extra terrestrials, but otherwise its near enough completed. Then on to other French units and some steamtech to support them.
-
Boy, you've been busy!
Great looking force! ;D
-
Awesome work! :-*
Aliens in Legionaire uniforms!
One of the things I like the most about VSF is the weird contrasts.
Superb.
-
Beautiful looking force. I love the Alien Legion
