Title: Perry miniatures and Colonel Snook together again for the Cape Frontier
Post by: fantail on March 17, 2016, 01:57:33 PM
I love Mike Snook's books on the Sudan so I am crazy excited by the two new books that he has done for the Perrys on the Cape Frontier Wars (7th and 8th) not to mention a range of figures by the Perrys. I had planned to game this period with HLBSco 40mm figures but they gave up on the range so this is awesome news.

I think you may have let the cat out of the bag prematurely.

Well I read it today in the latest Wargames Illustrated so I didn't think it was top secret. Still looking forward to it.

Rob Baker did some really nice figures for the Kaffir Wars (Cape Wars) under the 1st Corps banner that he use to run, and they had a lot of life and character in them. Sadly, the natives weren't so plentiful. Sadder still, the range never really took off despite what really great figures Rob sculpted. I know Rob was inspired by Bill Horan's work, and a lot of that shows through in the campaign dress of the range. I think the range is now with the current owners of 1st Corps.

I had heard a long time back that the Twins were thinking of moving into this period - there were 8 wars in total over a long time frame - and it should prove interesting. Mostly because if they do the later wars the figures they have a lot of crossover to other small campaigns, and that would be great!

I am hoping Renedra pulls out another miracle and has the plastic Colonial British ready for Salute...and that this will be followed up by a box of plastic Afghans...and some plastic Boers....plastic Zulus...etc....

Me too. :)

Is it mentioned in the March edition of WI? If so, where?

It was a full page ad in the latest issue on the self at my local gaming store. Not the issue with Marlborough on the cover so I think it must have been the April issue, so as for letting the cat out of the bag, a full page ad in a magazine is not a good way to keep a secret.

I can only assume that it was an official announcement then so apologies and also great! :) I've been sitting on this info for a while after someone took me into their confidence.

It's a fascinating period (man, I hate that word!) and one that I've been meaning to game but for lack of a comprehensive range, which I'm sure that the Perry's will be able to supply, probably at lightening speed!  :D

Some very interesting uniforms and troop types.

Is it just me or is it irritating when WI (are you sure it was WI?) deliver to the shops before their subscribers?

Darrell.

Sounds interesting.
Any new figures for the colonial period is of interest to me.
At least I can add them to my lead pile. ;)
I do love the books that Colonel Snook has written.
The Perrys and the Colonel, can't go wrong with those guys.

WI arrived today........

 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Should be brilliant and more importantly (thanks to Col. Mike Snook) be educational (which is probably more important- I know!)..... trust me to say that  :o

Announced on the Perries Facebook page, looks like the book will be released at Salute with figures arriving just a little before that.

A good list of conflicts, hoping to see figures for a lot of them.  :D

If only there was a set of colonial wargames rules coming out later in the year...  ::)

Those line troops in the second pick are ideal at friest glance for maori flagstaff war. I took 50 1st corp figures from their range and head swapped them for variety for my maori wars games, those look cracking

Some more news about the miniatures on the Perry's facebook:

Quote
The range of figures will include Xhosa, Zulus, Basotho, Fingoes, Boere, militia and of course British. While some of the British figures will be particular to campaigning to South Africa, having adapted clothing and equipment others fought there in standard kit. So some miniatures will be of use for other conflicts of the period e.g. Afghanistan, New Zealand, China or Spain (First Carlist War).

Some more pictures too, that I can't link somehow...maybe some other nice person can  :D

Cape Frontier Wars figures are now available!

The range will cover the conflicts between the British, the Cape Colony, and the amaXhosa for the 6th, 7th and 8th Cape Frontier Wars of 1834-5, 1846-7 and 1850-53.  This range will tie in with the two volumes of 'Cape Warriors' by Col Mike Snook that Perry Miniatures publish (the first volume of which will be in our Book section soon, after being released at Salute).
The range will also include the amaNdebele, amaZulu and Basotho as well as figures for the Anglo-Boer confrontations in Natal (1842) and across the Orange River (1845 and 1848).
There are a few more pictures of the figures in situ on our Facebook page.

The uniform is substantially the same, yes : the figures are lacking the HEIC waistbelt used in Indian by many Queen's regiments but that isn't so noticeable. However, expect the new Perry Miniatures castings to be significantly taller than their 25/26mm Foundry cousins.

As the Perry ad indicates, the pack in regulation uniform and uncovered forage cap will work just fine for the British Auxiliary Legion during the First Carlist War and can also be used to supplement the Empress Maori War range.

"Recommended ruleset?"

There is a new release of Sharp Practice (V2) due out in a couple of weeks.

Other option is the totally usable Muskets & Tomahawks system by Studio Tomahawk which covers this 'musket era' nicely and has the added benefit of the asymmetry of  regular, provincial and tribal force as a central design philosophy. Reading the lardy blog SPv2 seems aimed at the white man's conflicts amongst themselves though they can off course be tweaked to account for tribals I'm sure...

However, IMHO M&T models the way these troops interact very nicely as a core design concept...that's why I use them for later colonials as well and would use them for Cape Wars as well.

I plan on using M&T...

Cheers

Happy W

Triumph and Tragedy plus the Colonial Supplement. You need less miniatures than for SP2,  and it is a lot of fun to use it!

M&T seems to be a very good idea, i like the ruleset and the Setting seems pretty interchangeable.
Will try T&T, too.
SP is reserved for Napo skirmish in a Future far far away  :D

Cannot wait for these ranges...... just up my street..... and then there's the VLW's stuff to come too!  o_o :D :D o_o

Auwehhhhh...too good to be ignored. :-*
Recommended ruleset?

Sharp Practice from Too Fat Lardies will be perfect..... I'd wait until the Second Edition pops out the printers though. In the meantime SP V.1 would more than suffice.

You could also use The Men Who Would Be King which will be out in the not too distant future, Triumph and Tragedy too.

Death in the Dark Continent and In the Heart of Africa could be adapted for the Cape Wars easily and there's Congo on the way too.

So, a lot of choices!!  ;) :D
