Hi folks
The thirty years war is my favourite historical period, and a few weeks ago decided my army needed an upgrade. You might ask why, but I have been painting but not doing all the details, just enough to play with them - which is obviously totally wrong. So I decided that they should be as detailed as possible.
These are what I did in the last weeks - Johan Tserclaes Graf Tilly and Gottfried Heinrich zu Pappenheim - two battalia commanders. I had started with Tilly because I like the model a lot. The tercio was next, a unit already 'done' but added details and a few pikemen tp have a large unit, 2 sergeants for the musketeers and new flags. Then 2 cuirassier units and after them Pappenheim. He is Warlord's Earl of Essex model, and the ensign/bodyguard is a simple conversion from 3 models.
Models are Warlord Games and flags by Flags of War.

Lovely work :)
cheers

Nice collection you've got there
-
Wow, very nice - this is one of my favourite historical periods, and these do it more than justice 8) 8)
-
Very nice. Warlord Games' Tilly and the Earl of Essex are two of my favourite figures.
-
Beautiful work!
-
Thanks for the feedback :)
Oddly enough, the most time I use on the Thirty Years War is researching flags. Information is quite scarce. It's quite an obsession and I guess I'm giving FlagsofWar a headache each time he hears from me! lol

Lovely miniatures.

Welcome to the forum Robert. Good to see you getting pictures of your army shared on the net :)
Your flag requests are always welcomed mate :)
-
I really like them...;)
Cheers,
Don
-
Nice work - they look great....I really admire how you did a basic paint job to get them on a table THEN worked over them again to add the detail...and the flags look excellent
-
Great start on the forum, Corso, welcome again and please keep sharing your inspiring work on TYW, a fascinating period for sure.
-
looking fabulous sir...
-
Fine looking figures.
Interesting time period to do.
Also welcome to LAF.
-
Cheers folks! :)
Another cuirassier unit - this time Pappenheim's loyal troopers. Used the dregs of black wash to make the armour look dull. Added only a little water to it. Their boots are a bit different than other units - I like some variety between units.
His battalia has now 3 cuirassier units, thinking what to add next.........
-
Artillery, of course. :D
-
Artillery would be great, but I've started another horse unit, not cuirassiers this time.
-
Harquebusier unit to join Pappenheim's battalia. The flag is similar to one used by Pappenheim so should fit.
The troopers have red coats of different shades. It's aesthetics only, since cavalry at that time probably wouldn't have worn uniforms.
-
Those Harquebusiers are a truly lovely unit. Bravo.
-
Great work again. The new flags are on there way too :)

Eagerly awaiting them! :)
If I have to use one word to describe Piccolomini's regiment, I would use 'recycling'. The models are nearly all recycled one way or the other.
The horses have been part of an earlier regiment, painted using the old gw range, so matching with the new range to tidy up some brush mistakes was a headache, even the basing because they already had grass which didn't exactly match the others so had to scrape and even do grass on the areas where the old grass didn't budge. I still have a few of the old paints, the rim of the bases is Scorched Brown, though I had bought 2 pots from the local shop, the last stocks, and use them for bases only.
The ensign is a harquebusier captain with the right arm of the harquebusier ensign. The second trooper from the left of the second rank is a Scot Lancer with burgonet helmet, his right arm minus hand is from a swedish infantry officer and the hand is from the harquebusier captain. For Ottavio Piccolomini I used a cuirassier lifeguard and painting the casack red to be similar to his depiction by Snayers in the Lutzen painting, though here he wears three-quarters armour. All other models wear breastplate and/or buffcoat and helmet or hat.

Another lovely unit, I also like your earlier pike unit with lots of Flags, I have just finished painting 5 regiments for p&s but am now tempted to go back and add extra ensigns!
Best Iain

Cheers mate! :)
For that regiment used 4 flags representing a large unit, but for standard sized units 2.

Wallenstein sends reinforcements to Tilly which would have liked extra men in 1632, though not some of their commanders.
I had a foot regiment painted in orange uniforms with the flags of the Tercio de St Amour. Since that regiment was raised in 1636 and later destroyed at Rocroi, it wasn't suitable for 1632. So I did the following alterations:
1) Changed the coat colour to dark red
2) Replaced the hats
3) Changed one nco with the sergeant from the Irish Brigade box
4) Added details like eyes
5) Replaced the flags
6) Tufts changed
7) Replaced drummer with a conversion of a musician with a jingling johnny (schellenbaum)
Not the best weather for photos
The regiment now represents Berthold von Waldstein's regiment. He was a relative of the generalissimo and raised the regiment in 1628/9 (sources vary). Berthold fought at Lutzen, being wounded in the thigh at the last stages of the battle. The wound festered and he died later in Prague. The red of the coats is speculative - I chose the colour to match the Burgundian saltire on the flags - aesthetic obsessions. ::)
Flags as usual from flags of war :-*
-
Some units done in the meantime........
-
Very nice Army, that shows what you can still do with the Warlord pike and shotte plastics.
-
Great work, I'm dig'n it! :-*
-
Thanks for the feedback guys. Yes, the pike and shotte models by warlord games are a favourite of mine - a pity they are hardly releasing anything more for it, except the odd release here and there......... :-[
-
Added a commander, Otto Heinrich von Fugger. I hate to mix yellow, blue and red on the same model - so I used blue-grey and pale yellow - the red sash/garters tie the models to the rest of the army.
Models are warlord games and flag by flagsofwar.
-
Very good :)
Any chance of a group shot :D
cheers
James

Go on painting like that and cats will be sleeping au naturel, bees will be unable to genuflect, and there will be many frustrated lady dogs.
-
You are going to have a fantastic layout when these are all put together mate :)
-
Great work, a group shot would be very nice.
-
Thanks for the feedback guys! :D I'll take an army pict this weekend.
In the meantime finished an infantry regiment, Fugger's regiment. The flags show fugger's colours and I painted the coats yellow, using different shades since I didn't want them like the swedish yellow regiment. Flags as usual by Flagsofwar :-* The one with the jesuit symbol is one of my favourites, and ties well with Fugger, since he attended Jesuit education as a youth, same as did Maximilian of Bavaria and Graf Tilly.
-
More stuff done. Including Albrecth von Wallenstein and one of his commanders Hans Ulrich von Schaffsgotsch. Some units got or in the process of getting flag changes, hence I didn't do a whole army pict.
A big thanks from flags of war - I believe should we meet personally he will repeatedly punch me for the many flag requests I pester him with! :D
-
Excellent painting on those figures. This is coming along nicely.

They look great - multiple flags really add a big splash of colour
-
Looking awesome. Can't wait to see the new flags on their units :)
-
Thanks for the feedback guys!
@flagsofwar - the green one is very cool. It's the first green flag for my army!
-
The army is looking great, well done.
I had some concerns about how the Warlord figures would suit TYW armies, but your presentation has worked, they really look the part.
-

It's not my favourite colour :D
-
It's not my favourite colour :D
Same for me but that green flag really intrigued me. Researching about it showed some very curious things..........
-
Some croats done :D
Used normal plastic cavalry because the metal ones with the riders were too thin, so to be accurate the croats would have 'acquired' the horses from some swedish outriders! lol
-
You need to get these all out on a table to see them lined up :)
-
Nice figures. Who makes the Croats?
-
@Hu Rhu - warlord games
@Flags-of-war - I've got a unit of dragoons nearly ready. Once finished I'll have 3 divisions (battalias) ready, so a pict of the whole army would be in order-that's a promise! :D
-
Finished the dragoons - Tilly's dragoons raised in 1603, well before the TYW. The flag shows Emperor Matthias' monogram instead of Ferdinand's and on the other side St Michael slaying the devil. The cornet may seem as doing weightlifting but the model does have sculpted a socket attached to a leather strap to hold the lance-standard. 2 years ago I had done a unit but wasn't really good looking so kept the standard bearer and added new troops.
To keep a promise, I also took some picts of the army so far arrayed for battle. You might notice some units not included - they deserted! lol Note my photographic skills are abysmal at best..........
-
Nice painting on those dragoons. That's quite a collection you have amassed so far.
-
Thanks Hu Rhu
Yes it's a big collection and getting bigger! lol
-
Excellent work mate :)
-
Nice work. You have some great looking units there.
-
Cheers guys :D
Green is a colour is tend to avoid. However, I had seen a green flag with a gold cross under the motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES years ago and was intrigued. So after 'pestering' lol flagsofwar, he made it for me. I managed to make it as if the ensign is waving the flag. To match it I used a green flag with the Jesuit symbol. The unit, I realised, is the first infantry unit I have that doesn't feature a Burgundian Satire. I'll use them as commanded shot, the officers and flags to distinguish the unit from regular musketeers.
-
Wow really nice!
-
Very nice well done!
