Title: Mr West's Frost-Quest (June 26th, Pt. 19; It's dangerous at night, try daytime!)

First a link to my Strange Aeons work.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=83926.0

I'm done borrowing miniatures- time to launch into this head first!

Represents about 2 hours work-

389

I have completed the first bit of work on the warband, still need to complete basing. Unhappy with Empire Knight Shields- trying to find a more traditional round shield. Brush was insufficient to do line dot design.

Idea- y/n; dash dot design on Golem or Arcane Marking (Star of David or perhaps Lovecraft Refrence?)

Skeletons (2), Frost Toad, Purple Worm and Arcane Treasure basing is complete.

Require shield ideas and blanks, but originals seem to be missing.
-Refrence Kevin Adams and John Blanche.

Von Sydow's Wurm-Jaggers

Wizard- Isaak Von Sydow
Apprentice- Ansgar Höss
The Golem- "Trusty Alwin"
Infantry (4)
Crossbow (2)
Hunting Dogs (2)

Isaak Von Sydow is a powerful and reclusive man whom hails from the deep forests that lie before the dread tundra that holds the domain men whisper under their hushed breath; Frostgrave. His presence is so bold that drains conversation from rooms upon entry; and his mastery of Enchantment and Dwarven Rune Crafting is second to none of his piers. But his many exploits have left him with an insatiable desire for knowlage and the enlightened goal to achieve immortality.
Making his way north through dark woods towards his unknown fate, he has grown obsessed - now seeking the lost library of the grand enchanter whom fell from the sky 200 years before the great doom befell that city. The infamous Masked Golden Wizard, a magician of the old city who was rumored to come from a distant world ridding a twin tailed comet. One whom had the power to turn mundane objects to gold and had a staff of immeasurable power bearing a golden serpent and the wheel of eight.
Commanding the devistated and now leaderless remains of a party of Wurm Jagger, a trusted golem, his loyal hounds and beloved apprentice, caution has been thrown aside in a last desperate bid for power and wealth beyond imagining.

Love it!! It's the best to see when people put stories to their warbands. It's even more fun to see how they evolve through gameplay. My main warband was Lao Xane but his apprentice Jade took over after his untimely death. I'm looking forward to reading more.

Obvious problem- I got to find some suitable round shields. I seem to have misplaced what I had. :(

Also running out of miniatures to paint- this collection was only 16 miniatures... Even if I come up with a few warband expansions it's only 20 max.

I did have an idea- the old judge dread game had a control against players getting too powerful. When a gang had so much rep it was suicide to fight them, you could call the Judges on them instead of having a fight.

I am playing with a similar idea but with a skeleton army or mantic ghoul horde. If there is enough of a disparity then instead of a gang battle instead Frostgrave fights back and the player may build a litches skeleton army to fight the Wizard. (With the war bands rating being the point value of the skeleton horde)

The defending warband would need to pay a price- loss of magical knowlage perhaps (levels), a fee in gold, a "black mark" on the wizard, a permanent casting penalty perhaps? (I will make this into a fancy PDF if there is intrest)

The idea would only "cost" a box of skeletons- and I may be able to tie them into my Uncharted Seas 28mm Bone Griffons project/Dragon Rapant.

I would just run the Lich Lord, quite honestly. Between him and his retinue, they can do a lot of damage to a high level wizard's warband.

I have read the Thaw of the Litchlord, and was unimpressed- not a knock on the writer, I just feel his core product is so good, besides some minor tweaks not much is needed unless this thing is played week in and out.

I'm thinking a 2 page mini rule set to let some folks use their undead army as a counter to extra-powerful wizards. And in this case to allow me to justify buying a small mantic undead army- ;)

The real question is should I make custom terrain for this game?

(Oh gentlemen- it's the Golem from Dragonstrike.)

Originally I was holding on to him to use as a Golem for Strange Aeons- and was to pair him with a Rabbi Threshold Agent. But after looking at the range of Frostgrave wizards and being intrigued by the enchanter; he seemed to fit niche and look he part. Also can't find a decent 28mm Rabbi. :(

I do think he is sad BTW. I imagine he shares some liniage with the old Prague myth- he has life: yet he is an imitation of life. And he is bound to service. Dumb, Helpless, Clumsy, Slow... Yet sparked to life by the smallest touch of divinity- his master is old, obsessed over ancient and Necromantic knowlage that will likely end his life or end in his damnation. Also a natural rival for his lords attention- but forever less than his lords apprentice. And likely spurned as less than perfect.

We know how his story will end- he will end his life guarding his masters forgotten grave bound by an emotion that is a pale shadow of love or loyalty. Ultimately forgotten and alone trapped by hollow eyes and an absence of true divinity or a meaningful soul. To spend decades alone before crumbling into dust due to age or elements- the magic that gives him the parady of a soul fading over hundreds of years.

And that's what is reflected in his face...

Thinking I may paint a few dwarves to join his warband... Even though this runs counter to my gut feeling- much like the WHFRP Rune Magician who is actually hated by dwarves for practicing their ancestral magic.

I have a few dwarves in armor who might fit the specialist roles needed. Might be nice to reinforce the fantasy element a little. Cheaper and easier than trying to find a few knight miniatures...

Another Thought: I am trying to determine what I need to complete this warband or gaming experience. (Opinions are very welcome)

I am thinking about a second warband. I have 4 more heroquest henchmen. With some light conversion and different shields they should look thuggish enough to make a second warband with that thick and tough 80's GW look.

A Necromancer seems like a natural second choice. I could "FrostQuest" it with the GW Zombie as his creation- but that still leaves him with 4 more slots that would need to be filled.

I really like the hero-quest henchmen, but they do not mix well with the modern and more silly looking GW Mordheim sprues. Also I would need to find miniatures to work as supplements to his warband. (The formula seems to be 10 core miniatures, 2-3 specialists, 2 treasures and a summoned creature)

Other possible wizards would include using the AHQ Wizard. Just a thought problem for ya...

I'm sorry guys- this is a production diary more than a thread.

Idea- What if I could find some plastic 5th edition bretonian or battle master bowmen- they should look similar enough.

That would mean... Collection Wise-

Enchanter Warband
Wiz and App
4 MenAtArms
2 Crossbow
1 Golem

"Unknown" Warband
Wiz and App
4 MenAtArms
2-4 Bowmen
1 Summoned Thing

Generic Members
4 Hounds
2 Dwarves
2 Somthing...
2 Somthing...

Other
1 Wourm
1 Frost Toad
2 Skeletons
2+ Treasure Markers
Terrain

Any Thoughts?

Some ideas- those dwarves will become "knights" for the enchanter. Avoiding the red/white color scheme with a bias to linking earthtone.

So the question- that's the last of the henchmen I can find- 3 swordsman and 2 pole arms. There are two un-pictured dogs. So assuming two of these guys can be used as wizards. So the way I do math- I've got to get 6-8 henchmen/ I'm thinking the henchmen with the two bretonian bowmen. Perhaps using one of those priests as a potion-master.

I found some great misfit shields in my bits box- they will really bring the enchanters warband together!

I have some old school ogres- I feel sad that Frostgrave has no Ogre hireling. :(
Thinking about painting one up to stat out as a barbarian.

I know my painting standards barely meet the minimum on this forum- but I am really proud of these shields... They were old metal ones a friend gave me years ago- I feel it really meets the theme and aesthetic I was going for.

I'm typically a lurker, so I cannot speak for the rest, but I think your paintwork is quality.  I was actually taking notes on your color choices for the AHQ Hirelings since I have a group of them that are going to be pressed into the same sort of service soon.

Kegluneg- a Note- I used the mordheim/free company crossbow to convert those guys, it was a easy conversion - and the pose looks very natural. Highly recommended-

The crossbowmen can represent a 50gp or 100gp soldier. So they have utility in the beginning and end of a warbands lifecycle. And I am a big believer in that +2 to wound that the crossbow benifits from. I am actually dreading moving over to the bows in the other warband, as after my first few games these crossbows have been oh so important in locking down lanes of fire and gunning down fleeing troops with treasure.

I am very tempted to steal one of the mercanaries I had reserved for the second warband and turn him into a third crossbow.

*Edit* - My first three games have turned into aggressive manhunts where a thief (Mordheim free company soldiers) almost allways reach the treasures first only to be dragged down by hunting dogs and crossbow bolts. :)

I would really like to find another 1-4 heroquest henchmen before I begin assembling the second warband- I will not offer to buy them but I could arange for some pretty fun trades if you are intrested in WHFB Empire bits, components, pewter or something fun and random. (Ask for somthing random and let me know your general interests- I will arange a more than fair trade.)

PM if you are intrested.

Don't knock yourself, I think your painting skills are very good. Nice, crisp painting and your colors compliment each other well as do the bases. The shields look particularly good.

What painting techniques do you use? I.E. Citadel/Vallejo/PP3 paints? White/black/greyscale undercoat? Washes etc?

Folkart- at 1-2$ a bottle it's great stuff. I keep some GW foundation red because it's got a great pigment count. Same with their metallic- their inks are acceptable as well-

If I hate a paint I just throw it out. I also do a TON of terrain painting- couldn't afford to do it otherwise.

Undercoat is typically black dry-brushed with 2-3 coats of watered down brown so I can see detail and give the colors on top of black a fighting chance.

The paint is a symptom of a "discussion" I had about 10 years ago on another forum. Basically I decided I could no longer afford the worlds greatest miniatures... Therefore I am happy to use substandard paint, terrain, miniatures and game systems. ;)

*its worth making a point out of that- if I can recycle an old miniature or older sculpt over a new one: I do my best to use the older stuff first.

Dang. You Yanks seem to get all the good alternatives when it comes to painting. I do a lot of terrain for my wargaming group, and props for my buddy's Yogscast videos, and I end up either using really cheap quality poster paints, or really expensive artist materials like Daler/Windsor & Newton. (I miss popping into Micheal's in Toronto.)   :(

I normally use Vallejo but I DO like the GW reds, and their washes.

@Azzabat

I'm going to take a wild guess- introduced to the hobby via model railroad or historical diorama?

These are Hobby Games; and I am saddened to no end by the people who choose to ignore the range of experiences in the hobby or the multitude of rescources that already exsist. And at the same time the number of people who fail to contribute or bring terrain.

And cheers to the terrain makers!

Actually it was via Fancy Dress.   :o

My lil brother needed a Viking Costume for something at school when he was 6 or 7, and I remembered seeing some viking figures in a Comic Store on one of our Saturday morning outings, so bought it to use as reference material. (these were the glorious days before the internet and home computers.)

My farm boy upbringing means you never throw anything out, so I thought "Mmmm, what can you do with these little metal guys?" ... and a passion was born.

The goal is two but similar warbands- a "whole game" concept where I have enough to play on my own- and a good assortment of models for playing at a club.

Necromancer
Enchanter
Hired Help
Encounters

Those are not GW dwarf shields BTW- old Runequest stuff. ;)
Those are GW undead shields, came with the old skeleton warriors boxed set. I have loads kicking about somewhere.

That is correct- the "dwarf shields" on the enchanters thugs are pewter shields from an early 90's rune quest dwarf set.

Giving my Necromancer and Apprentice the same treatment as my Enchanters Warband- some pics of them in the midst of terrain. I traded for and painted this GW Crypt, lovely model.

Played my first game with these guys last night, I'm a pretty big fan of the imp- it's the first time I have ever used a thief.

*Unlike our enchanter friend whom has taken up residence in a cabin deep in the midst of the woods, our Necromancer has decided to set up his workshop in a hidden and long forgotten crypt along the edge of a graveyard. Evidence of occupation no doubt given away by the supplies left near the crypt.

*Although lucrative earnings can be made from the many alchemical compounds found in the dreaded purple worms, their presence in a graveyard is heretical to our Necromancer. The creature must be destroyed before it can violate more graves...

Big Question- do I create another wizard warband, or do I work on the hired swords and mercenaries (Ogres, Dwarf Knights(2) and Alchemist)

I also have been playing with the idea of a Sleeping Dragon toy conversion or a attempting to using a castle kit I have to make some ancient ruins for the forest.

Any suggestions? I want to make this set complete. (Damn You Spell Cards...) 4323

I love your scenery. The cabin in the woods is my favorite, but the graveyard is awesome as well (very detailed).
If I had to vote I would vote for hired swords and mercenaries. I'd love to see dwarven knights.
Nevertheless a sleeping dragon conversion is a great idea. But keep in mind: If the dragon wakes up, it is going to be hungry and your warbands are probably its dinner.

Ok- what color should the two dwarf knights be?

And anyone have suggestions for names?

I will also be painting an Ogre Barbarian- he needs a name too!

My favorite Dwarven color scheme is green and red. Like the sigil of the dawarven hold Karak Kadrin.
I like this dwarven shield http://cragfistsbrewery.weebly.com/uploads/1/4/5/6/14564706/_7482509_orig.jpg (http://cragfistsbrewery.weebly.com/uploads/1/4/5/6/14564706/_7482509_orig.jpg)
For the names I can offer to look up some dwarven words. I have a copy of the Warhammer Sourcebook "Dwarfs: Stone and Steel (Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play, 1st Edition)", I just have to find it.

The ogre name might be a problem :)

Hold off on the names- you can name them when they are painted. First one is Red and Green, Second Blue and White.

A huge number of threads that I often returned to for inspiration have all been devoured by the photobucket betrayal.  Yours included.  It is a tremendous loss to us all.

Your stuff is great.  I remember some of what was once here and regret not saving the images into a local directory or evernote or something.

I am in love with your scenery! Both the green and the white editions.

Is the green table a gaming mat? Or did you make it yourself?

The table is a 2x2 MDF Board covered with textured wallpaper samples and toilet paper soaked in MDF. Sprayed white. Painted brown and grey- then painted white with some green and blue stains.

It's good... but the game really seems to "want" 30 inches. So I line figures up against table edge touching as deployment.

Fortunately by having staircases and these 1.5" platforms- the play space and the way the climbing & los rules happen its forgiving. Spells and melee troops become a little more dangerous, but I think that's a good thing.

Movement spells can be OP if you encounter an ideal situation- but most people I play with seem obsessed with the kills so I just let the 2-3 players who have a sense of humor about it play "uber crafty wizards"

I enjoy playmates because they are less prone to moisture damage- but people also charge quite a lot for them. The mantic 2x2 deadzone grids are awesome. Trying to decide if I should just shut up and do a set of 3x3 boards (Snow, Desert, Woodland, Dungeon)

If you LOVE the terrain I would give OCC a call- he has pre painted sets and has just finished casting his inventory- he has some great stuff. I went "cheap" and I feel like an idiot- his staircases are sexy. The statues are grim, and they feel like they were most worth it.

@ Boggard- Thanks!!! The lighting was a little messed up but when I threw the filter on there it looked super awesome. While I still have this board set-up ideas for shoots are welcome. (Otherwise this gets packed into its travel case and I paint some blood bowl....)
