I really liked it when I was about 14. Somehow, I doubt it will stand the test of time. At the same time there was "Bring 'Em Back Alive" with Bruce Boxleitner in a similar vein (and would probably fare as well to the modern viewer.) I am rather partial to the two Richard Chamberlain Allain Quartermain films. A bit of a comedy twist on Indianna Jones, but fun.
-
You may already have these covered, but just in case:
Any of the Indiana Jones films (the first is by FAR the best)
The Mummy--possibly the best of them all
Skycaptain of Tomorrow--CGI heavy, but still good
Casablanca--one of the best films ever; no creatures or strange science, of course, but with Nazis, Agents, Double-Agents, Bogey, Bergman, Greenstreet, Lorre and that run-down city itself, how can you go wrong?
There is a French film (title escapes me now) about a girl investigating something or other--but it has dinosaurs, mummies, old museums...It's great and kids love it, if that's a consideration
Romancing the Stone--a little dated, but still fun
The Rocketeer--lots of fun
The High Road to China--a Tom Selleck film from the 80s set in the "Back of the Beyond"; it's terrific entertainment, with great sets, costumes, acting--well worth checking out!
So there are a few. I'll try and think of the name of the French film and add it later. Enjoy the ride!
EDIT: Les Aventures Extraordinaires d'Adele Blanc-Sec https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Extraordinary_Adventures_of_Ad%C3%A8le_Blanc-Sec_(film)

Excellent list! I've got them all. ;)
I'd also suggest checking out the some of the old 1920-1940 serials. Go to the Pulp Alley (Serials of Extraordinary Adventure) channel on youtube and you can watch for days......
Spy Smasher
Captain Midnight
The Phantom
Green Hornet
Terry and the Pirates
Drums of Fu Manchu
Jungle Girl
The Spider's Web
The Crimson Ghost
Fighting Devil Dogs
Gang Busters
Secret Agent X9
The Shadow Strikes
Great Alaskan Mystery - a personal fave!
the list goes on and on......
HAVE FUN
-
No list is complete without the Maltese Falcon with Boggie and the Thin man Movies all these are based on Dashiell Hammett work

Couldn't agree more!
-
the good the bad and the weird
the 39 Steps
the riddle of the sands
-
Big Trouble in Little China (it's also a hoot !)

"Tales of the Gold Monkey" is good, worth the money and time. It's light, but fun. That series inspired Pulp virtuoso sculptor Bob Murch to sculpt some figures. And that Grumman Goose and the Monkey Bar are great modern Pulp icons. Must watch.
"Bring 'em Back Alive" 1982/1983 also looks good, or at least the first episode, which is the only one that I've been able to watch. Here's the imdb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083391/
Youtube is a gold mine of old pulp serials and movies. I enjoyed that Crimson Ghost, which is on D Phipps' excellent list above. Also note that the 1950's Sheena TV series, or at least some of it, can be viewed on Youtube.
"Tarzan and His Mate" 1934 - perhaps the best Tarzan movie of all time.
"The Golden Mistress" 1954 - treasure hunt in and near Haiti (before that country was totally deforested), German version 1955. Check out the imdb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047037/
"Heat of the Sun" 1998 - 6 hour TV mini-series from BBC Mystery, features a tough detective and an aviatrix based on the historical Beryl Markham. Must watch. Here's the imdb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138966/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
"The African Queen" 1951 (Duh!)
"The Lost World" 2001
"The Lost City" 1935 - truly bizarre! The imdb page is here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0026652/
I'm sure that I could bore you to death with more jungle pulp, but I'll stop there.
-
I'll second the recommendations for Tintin (one of my favourite characters, and the film is great) and Big Trouble (an excellent flick)!
-
Even better: read the original Tintin comics!
-
Right you are, Fram. I think I own all of them. Essential reading!
-
I'll add "Five Came Back" and "Back from Eternity" two versions of the same story, both great. I don't think anyone has mentioned "King Kong", so I will. Both the original 1933 version and the most recent with Jack Black and Naomi Watt. I'll also include cable TV, "Boardwalk Empire" and "Peaky Blinders", are both great.
-
Have to add The Shadow with Alec Baldwin. It was my introduction to the character and my first step into a much larger Pulp world.
-
I have a IMDB list of pulp/noir themed movies which I've watched and reviewed.

Hey! I entirely, ENTIRELY forgot about this movie... Hmmm...maybe I blocked it out. You see, I really, really do not like Mr. Baldwin. But, I did love this movie. Heck, I will even admit, I think he did a damn good job. I still don't like him however.
I think I may have to find and watch this again now.
Thanks again!
-
Does the Wind and the Lion count as pulp?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073906/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Favourite movie of all times!
-
King Kong
-
Don't know if it qualifies?
But I always loved "Big Trouble in Little China" Big gang fight scenes and magic/fantasy elements!
I know it's a modern setting. Just always been inspired by it! :)
-
I'll add my vote for the old 30's serials.
Great fun and adventure in space, in the city or even deep in the jungle.
Good source of inspiration for all kind of pulp game.
If you're on the go, I'd also suggest the old radio serials from Old Time Radio.
Agent K7, the Shadow, Captain Midnight, Doc Savage and a whole bunch of others are available for download on the archives.org.
-
"Miller's Crossing" and "Last Man Standing" are also good Pulp/gangster movies.
-
'Bullshot' and 'Doc Savage:The Man of Bronze'. Not the most serious films, but lots of fun and definitely of the pulp genre.
-
No one mentioned "The Land that Time Forgot" yet? Pure Doug McClure rubber dinosaur goodness based on an Edgar Rice Burroughs story (and crying out for a new film adaptation).
It's not great telly but the Aussie "Lost World" TV series is a good source for scenario ideas.
-
Cheers guys. Lots for me start viewing. I have seen quite a few of the more common ones :)
-
I'd add Bubba Ho-tep.
Not strictly a pulp film, but a mummy sucking the souls out people in a retirement home, and only an elderly Lone Ranger ,Elvis impersonator, and a former president to stop it.Is good plot for a game, and a league I'm tempted to make.
-
The Phantom was a fun movie, and had a youthful and dead sexy Katherine Zeta Jones in a leather catsuit. Need I say more?
-
i suppose it depends on how you want to classify your 'pulp' (i'm not choosey):
sci-fi = flash gordon, buck rogers, star wars (ep 4 new hope; the others not so much IMHO), 5th element, men in black
action adventure = scorpion king
spy = james bond, bbc tv the saint (roger moore), the avengers(diana rigg as emma peel!), mission impossible
cowboy = magnificent seven, fistful of dollars, maverick (the james garner TV), wild wild west (TV - movie goes more VSF), lone ranger(not the modern movie), zorro
war = rat patrol, black sheep squadron, apocaylpse now (yes i think so!)
pirate = pirates of caribbean, captain blood, sea hawk
horror = supernatural (TV show)
cops/gangster = untouchables, dragnet, starsky and hutch (TV), sherlock holmes (basil rathbone or jeremy brett but robert downey jr is good too), the warriors ("come out and plaaayyyy")
i suppose almost any errol flynn movie.
-
pirate = pirates of caribbean, captain blood, sea hawk
There's a wonderful little known film called 'Savage Islands' (sometimes 'Nate and Hayes' for some reason) starring a young(er) Tommy Lee Jones. It's a great pirate flick with loads of scenario ideas.
-
League of Gentlemen
-
League of Gentlemen
Brilliant & funny TV series, but not sure I see the link with Pulp.
-
League of Gentlemen
Are you local???
-
Are you local???
maybe he means 'league of extraordinary gentlemen'?
-
La cité des enfants perdus - City of lost children. The other two mentioned below are also brilliant - namely Delicatessen and Amélie.
A 1995 French-German-Spanish science fantasy drama film directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Ron Perlman. The film is stylistically related to the previous and subsequent Jeunet films, Delicatessen and Amélie. The music score was composed by Angelo Badalamenti. It was entered into the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_City_of_Lost_Children)
-
'Quigley down under' starring Tom Selleck. Magnum as a Wild West expert rifle shot in Austraila, what is not to like?
-
Indeed I did!
-
For the youngsters amongst you "The League of Gentlemen" was a british heist film of 1960 with Jack Hawkins leading a group of disgruntled ex-military. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052997/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052997/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3)
-
Has anybody said Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow.
-
Can I recommend the Jean claude Van Damme film The Quest. Starts out in the New York waterfront like a gangster movie then moves to the South Seas - Pirates an all. Search for a lost city where the martial arts contest will take place(great fortress depicted) there is even a 'zeppelin' featured. Ticks a lot of Pulp boxes despite the racial stereotypes and the martial arts.
Did anyone list Even Angels Have Wings early mail plane pilots in South America?
-
Ticks a lot of Pulp boxes despite the racial stereotypes and the martial arts.
I thought that was a mainstay of the pulp film. ;)

Tim K
League of gentlemen set is on the way (requested by Mick at 1st Corps) will be released in May probably for Partisan.
Mark.

Hi. First post on this board so I hope I have done it right.
I Saw the reference to Tintin a few posts ago and thought I would mention the excellent Blake & Mortimer comics as well. Written by Edgar Jacobs (who also worked on some of the Tintin books with Herge) and the drawing/ stories are in a much more adult style but the basis is the same - heroes (Blake, who works for MI5 and Mortimer, who is a professor of Archaeology), evil villains and a mix of ancient relics and sci-fi secret weapons.
Most have been translated into English now so check them out.
The first book in the series is 'The Secret of the Swordfish (part 1).
Oh, and film wise has anyone mentioned Dick Tracy yet. Beautifully filmed in comic book colours.
Mike

Hi Mike,
First of all, a very warm welcome to you. For a first post yours is a great one: I'd never heard of Blake and Mortimer before, read your comments, zipped over to Amazon, and have The Pyramid Mystery (1&2) and The Yellow M coming later today (sometimes it's great living in the 21st century). They look stunning and I'm very excited to see them. Thank you!!!
Also, I can't believe I forgot Dick Tracy. While Warren Beatty feels a little off to me, one quickly forgets it with the excellent plot, action, cinematography and over-the-top villains that suit a film adaptation of the old comics so well.
So all in all, a stunning post. Thanks again and hope to see you around often!

I got a kick out of "The Librarian" movies. Here's the trailer for the first one ("Quest for the Spear"):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LsPz8vCULE
Some of the episodes of the TV series "Warehouse 13" were entertaining, with pulpy pursuits of dangerous objects. Here's a "best of" video that's 5 minutes long:

I think we're mixing Victoriana with Pulp. I see Pulp as more 1920's - 1950's (when it becomes Noire).

Yes and steam punk as well. True historical pulp was 1920's -1950's but today the idea seams to have been expanded to include the other ideas when its being discussed. I stick to the classical idea myself.

Jeeves and Wooster?

Jeeves and Wooster?
Definitely!

For a real mix of genres, try Bogart's All through the night. It's a comedy featuring, as the ad says "Gangsters vs. Gestapo" Starring Bogart, Peter Lorre, Conrad Veidt, Jackie Gleason, William Demarest, and Phil Silvers. Not too many movies like this, a real mishmash!
Other movies for me include the Thin Man series, Maltese Falcon, The Foreign Correspondent, and the Prisoner of Zenda.
The list could just keep going on, so many movies thhat offer inspiration. Even the Young Indiana Jones shows can give me some cool ideas of scenarios to try.
Oh and someone mentioned that the serial Zorro's Fighting Legion was a good serial, well, I just got a copy of it and they were right. It is one of the better serials that I have watched. I have 20 or so and it certainly ranks high on my list of serials!
-
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Mighty Joe Young
Son of Kong
Hope & Crosby: The Road to Singapore, the Road to...
Steam-Pulp:
The Island at the Top of the World
Five Weeks in a Balloon
Around the World in 80 Days
Jackie Chan:
Armour of God
Operation Condor
Pulp-ish Historical:
The Aviator
Seven Years in Tibet

I think we're mixing Victoriana with Pulp. I see Pulp as more 1920's - 1950's (when it becomes Noire).
Be honest, the lines are blurry at best. Edgar Rice Burroughs' stories were being published in serial form from 1912, which coincidentally the year that Conan Doyle's "The Lost World" serial was published.....
Film Noir was largely a result of limited budgets during WW2, but there's no denying that pulp crime fiction (just one facet of pulp fiction) was a source for stories & writing talent.
That's my penny's worth anyway. :)

In our continued discussion of what Pulp is may I offer the following :D
This is an excellent history of the Pulp Genre
http://www.pulpworld.com/history/history_01.htm
You can find a briefer history here
http://www.thepulp.net/pulp-info/pulp-history/
And finally a quote from one of my favorite rule sets "Astounding Tales" by Howard "Masked Avenger" Whitehouse
"'Pulp' requires that you see the world through the eyes of a certain sort of audience. Often it's a fifteen year old American kid in 1934; at least, that was who Lester Dent - the writer of the Doc Savage books - was aiming at. What you need are simple heroes, evil opponents, and a good deal of gee-whiz science. Geography can be vague, history ludicrous, but as long as it moves fast and good wins out, that's all fine.
If you were a hard boiled writer - Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler, for example - the audience was older, less innocent, but still looking for a world where good people stood against evil, even if you couldn't find a doctor who woulden't drug you and lock you up at his private sanatorium. This style demanded strongly defined heroes and villains, although the more sophisticated heroes might be fairly jaded, and have their own bad habits. Actually, everyone has bad habits, as well as regrets, debts and losing bets."
So the pulps included westerns, detectives, jungle adventure, gangsters, tales of the Orient (the yellow peril), love stories, aviation, war, fantastic science, mad scientists, Nazi's, aliens, horror, other worlds, dinosaurs, apes etc etc..
other good web sites for helping define pulp are
http://www.thepulp.net/
http://www.normansaunders.com/PULPS.HTML
http://www.pulpmags.org/cover_gallery.html
I hope this helps our discussion and our selection of movies ;)

Thanks for those links, warlord frod! Those links are really great.
I think the 1998/99 TV series "The Lost World" has been mentioned already. But here's the trailer:

Just flicked through my collection and found some that might fit the bill:
Dr. Strangelove
V for Vendetta
Public Enemies
Shadow of the Vampire
Porco Rosso
Chicago
Amelia
And some gems from the german speaking world:
Ijon Tichy
Raumpatrouille Orion
Nick Knatterton
-
Never thought about it until rewatching it last night but but 'guardians of the galaxy' could be considered pulp sci-fi.
-
Congo (1995) ??? Can't remember if it was any good though
-
Well somebody beat me to Nate and Hayes- bravo to you! As far mysteries go, while not being pulp they certainly have atmosphere. I recommend the Miss Fisher mysteries, either the books or the shows with Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher. She is a real pulp hero with moxie!

I'm off to watch a special showing of the 1954 Disney film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Obviously more Steampunk (or proto-steampunk, considering when the book was written) than Pulp, but it's worth mentioning here anyway.

Pulp isn't a genre, it's the literary equivalent of a socio-economic class. Verne's works qualify as Pulp because of the way they were published (magazine serials), and because of their intended readership. Disney's 20,000 Leagues is especially significant because of the acknowledged influence it had on the aesthetic style of steampunk, in particular art director David Hoff's seminal design for the Nautilus, which has inspired countless imitations:

James Mason is also a great Captain Nemo.

This classic thread could, I think, now benefit from the inclusion of the recent tv series Babylon Berlin.

We really enjoyed season 1 of Babylon Berlin and I'm looking forward to seeing season 2. Excellent series so far!
