Title: My frostgrave project, work in progress (old school minis)
Post by: sundayhero on April 04, 2016, 02:53:56 PM
Hi,

In this topic I'll show you my work in progress warbands construction for Frostgrave, based on old school minis (mainly from Metal Magic range).

It all started with this mini (metal magic winter adventurer), I bought years ago, and painted more recently :

So of course, when Frostgrave has been released, I directly thought about this miniature, and decided to buy the game (I even bought it twice, with the recent french version  lol), and start collecting minis for the game, to build 2 bands based on old school fantasy minis.

I found a lot of discounted warriors in a french store, and I completed them with figures from Midlam Miniatures stores (wizards and a few other figures).

Starting with the wizards, I choosed these for the 1st warband :

I thought the 2 figures work really well together ! I imagine a rich wizard from a famous city school, with his apprentice arms full of magic rolls and books.

I also bought a couple of oriental figures :

Here again, there is some kind of natural "hierarchy" between the 2 characters. The apprentice advancing with the lantern, with the wizard walking behind him  lol

And here 's the cannon fodder :  :D

Some classic warriors :

Some unexperienced fellows :

Some figures wich could be used for more expensive soldiers or specialists :

Some archers and crossbowman :

A barbarian (I made a mistake choosing him, since I will not be able to keep  wysiwyg weapon according to the rulesbook) :

And finally, a few other soldiers :

Now I have to see how I will organise the 2 warbands, and of course start conversions to adapt them to the cold climate of Frostgrave  lol

Those are some nice minis!  I like the look of them!  Good luck on dividing them up properly and painting them!  Cannot wait to see where you go with them!

Love it. Probably one of the best FG projects yet, based on the minis and your first painted one; love the classic D&D feel to them.

thank you both !

Yes, I'm very enthusiast with this project, where I will be able to paint just the way I'm more comfortable with. No strict uniforms I'm used to paint in historical wargaming, and no "flashy" paint schemes I'm struggling with in my other projects (space hulk v3, shadowrun).

Awesome collection you've got over there.  :-*
Love to see them getting painted up.

thanks !

Metal magic figures are still cheap, no matter it's new old stock, used or new casts (like the ones from Midlam miniatures, great service by the way). I believe it's one of the cheapest old school ranges available, with Ral Partha (another great store!).

The fact a lot of references are still produced blocks speculation, I think !

Excellent thread. Midlam Miniatures range is one of my favourites, it has that old-school feeling but without looking "wonky".

Look on Midlam Miniatures online shop, they sell many references from Metal Magic.

You're right, it's where I bought the figures I didn't find in "new old stock". Really good service !

Concerning my project, during nights I'm currently finishing some half painted shadowrun figures first, to free my "hobby" workplace (I usually don't paint my own figures in my pro workshop), I should have finished this week end.

Hi,

No new figures for now, but I worked on some compatible scenery (in fact, I was finishing a customer trees bases comission, and I made a few extra ones for me, including winter bases) :

I still need to fix a few details, now the bases are drying   8)

That figure fits it's background perfectly.

I love your painting style.  :-*

Your choice of miniatures is really excellent. Especially love the rich city wizard and his apprentice. Can't wait to see them with paint on them.

A barbarian (I made a mistake choosing him, since I will not be able to keep  wysiwyg weapon according to the rulesbook) :

I wouldn't worry too much about WYSIWYG - it's pretty obvious that he's a barbarian, so as long as your opponent is in agreement there shouldn't be a problem with using the mini.
