Hi all. I'll be using this thread to post any of the painted fantasy models that don't have a specific project dedicated for them. I'll be using the stuff here in many games from Frostgrave to dungeon crawlers.
First up, a troll from Ral Partha. Lots of fun to paint. 4 more on the painting table and next month I'll buy the remaining trolls.

-
Nice! This is just the color I want my AA Formorians to be...
-
Always liked those trolls. Nice work!
-
Great troll! I like the way you did the rust, and the base gives a good contrast to the rest of the figure.
-
Lovely - terrific paintwork! And the base is magnificent.
Those Bob Olley trolls are great - they're very much how I imagine those from Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword.
-
Thanks chaps. Finished the second troll this morning and making good progress on the troll drummer this afternoon.

Those are two BEAUTIFUL Old Trolls...WONDERFULLY painted & based. OUTSTANDING WORK!
-
They look tremendous. How do they scale with a 28mm humanoid miniature? I was interested in these for my Kings of War orc army, but I was afraid they could be a bit small.
-
They are mounted on 40mm round bases if that helps. Not as big as most other trolls but still taller than human size. I'll get a comparison shot later if I remember.
Edit: Here's a comparison photo. Hope it helps.

Third troll is finished. Only two more to go until I need to place an order with Ral Partha for the rest of the murderous band.

-
Nice job, always like to see different skin colours on monsters/aliens
-
These look stunning, mate, both paintwork and bases.
:-* :-*
I feel that I will add these to the unpainted Mordor horde at some point, they would work really well with what I already have.
:D
-
Great work! I like the blue skin and the basing is fantastic :D
-
Splendid brushwork on some fine old minis. Thank you for posting!
-
Those Ral Partha trolls are great sculpts and you have painted them super.
I dont think i would have risked doing blue skin but you have pulled it off great.
-
Love the trolls :-)
-
Fourth troll complete. A standard bearer, carrying aloft a blood drenched banner.
-
super paint work, really like the old scrap metals and rust colours.
-
Morning folks. Wanting a break from painting blue troll skin, I turned my attention to some Bob Olley orcs that I ordered from Ral Partha last week. I didn't want a super bright green skin like I use for my 4th Edition Warhammer stuff, but a more "realistic" green hue.
-
Another Orc. Great fun to paint. These are probably my most favourite Orc models ever as are the trolls. Bob Olley has managed to capture so much detail and character with each sculpt.
-
OUTSTANDING! The Standard Bearing Troll & his Orc Cohorts are just BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFULLY painted & based. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
The Gargantua orcs from Ral Partha are also a favorite of mine, pity that they are so expensive :(
-
The metals on those trolls look great!
Love the orcs too :)
Justin
-
Thanks for the comments chaps. Plenty more of these to paint, but taking a break from them for now to paint other things.
-
Hi folks. Returning to my fantasy stuff for a little while. Last week I made some test pieces for a HeroQuest board which came out pretty good but they weren't what I wanted for my generic darker fantasy dungeon crawls being too brightly painted. So I set to making the dungeon I have always wanted. I'd toyed with the idea up to now of a resin dungeon set like Dwarven Forge or Ainsty or even a card set like Battle Systems awesome layout. In the end it came down to cost and the fact I have some ability at making half decent terrain.
So without further waffle here is the first test tile for my dungeon. The initial dungeon will have 12 tiles similar to this with varying room and door set ups.

Looks good. Can't wait to see what you do next.

Thanks. I have a week off work so I'm hoping to get a few more done. Got lots of ideas I want to do.
-
Lovely painting on those orcs and trolls.
Well if you have the time and patience, there is a method floating around called the Wyloch tile system. It's basically Dwarven forge scratch built except with a 1.25 grid for larger minis.
Episode 1 the case. There are caves and dungeons as well so far, maybe more
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ASuNQlrU_U
-
Thanks for the video. I'd already come to that conclusion myself. My tiles are based on 30mm squares to allow for the walls occupying some of the space so that I can still place minis on the squares.
-
As i tend to favour evil armies I already have lots of dungeon creatures, so thought it was about time I painted some more heroes. This mini I got for donating to the Frothers Charity 2012. Glad I've finally got around to painting it.

The dungeon sections are very effective. What are they, 5mm blue foam with etched stonework and a plaster / filler texture?
-
The dungeon sections are very effective. What are they, 5mm blue foam with etched stonework and a plaster / filler texture?
Thanks. That's pretty much what they are. I used depron instead of blue foam and liquid green stuff texture. My others will have filler texture to keep costs down.
-
Finished this guy this morning. Lots of detail on Tre's Red Box Games minis (now sold by Hasslefree) which means they take a little longer but worth it in the end as I see them as some of the best modern fantasy minis out there.
I've named this guy Brodir Alebelly, armed with his gert axe and trusty drinking horn.

Gondaft the Bluish-Grey, bungling dwarf wizard extraordinaire and meddler in the affairs of peaceful folk everywhere. Travels the villages sending the easily persuaded on dangerous adventures for his own amusement under the pretence that they are the only ones who can help. Should you find the desiccated corpse of a halfling or dwarf in a dungeon, chances are they met their end on a "simple" Quest given to them by Gondaft.
-
Nice work. Love the basing too. Must get me some of those flowery bits.
-
Thanks. The basing is simple to do but looks great. The flowers add a nice touch I feel.
Next up a barrow Wight. I was happy with the paint job until I varnished it, then the colours dulled down quite a lot.
-
I really like that.
-
Cool. Pity the varnish dulled it down because although it looks good like this I can imagine what it would have looked like before.
-
Another Barrow Wight finished today. Paul Muller's undead are fantastic and these were great to paint. Wish there were more poses. I'll be adding in some Lord of the Rings Barrow Wights to compliment these.

Truly lovely work, I'm discovering some really nice minis here.

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words.
Finished another hero for the adventuring party.
Horgann the Hulk, warrior from the frozen north, ready to crack skulls with his hammer.

I like your models very much and the dungeon is a lovely backdrop to the photos.
-
Thanks.
Managed to paint one more adventurer before I had to go back to work. Also got another two dungeon sections finished.

Lovely additions, sir.

I am particularly taken with the modular dungeon idea*

Yeah, it's seriously nice and pretty effective looking.
-
Thanks chaps. No more progress on the dungeon itself but I'll get back to it soon.
Finished painting up a Ral Partha Orc blood drinker to add to the baddies bestiary. Bob Olley's sculpt fun as always to paint.
-
Both the Dungeon & the miniatures look FANTASTIC...VERY WELL DONE!
-
I felt compelled to paint something other than an Orc or goblin yesterday and managed to complete this figure from start to finish in a day with sporadic intervals of painting. I may revisit the shield and add a design or dirty it up, as its a bit too clean even for me.
-
Very nice, as always. I really like the colours on this one.
Where is the mini from? I'm guessing its Red Box. Really looks nice with your painting style
-
Thanks. It is indeed one of Red Box Games early dwarfs before Tre changed their style a little. Hasslefree own that range now.
-
That explains why I couldn't find it.
Neat, thanks for the info.
-
Classic Skaven warpfire thrower. I'm building a small band of skaven for use in Frostgrave hence why this guy doesn't have his fuel supply guy with him. I tried getting the colours a bit dirtier and less bright than my usual 4th edition stuff.

Another ratman finished.

-
Cracking job on those 8) 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Lovely! Those first-generation Skaven have never been surpassed - and you've given them the paintwork they deserve.
-
Thanks chaps. Finished another skaven. Three more to go before next weekend's Frostgrave game.

Well, the weekend has been and gone. A fantastic game of Frostgrave as a dungeon crawl was had. Here are the photos of the last 3 members of the warband.

And a group shot.

Lovely Ratmen from my favourite period of them.
Those sculpts are wonderful and you have done them justice.
:-* :-*
-
Splendid :-* :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Gorgeous figures, and even more thanks to you. I wonder how could they f*ck them up that much with the abhorrent clan warriors plastic kit from 6th edition (those baseball glove hands...)
-
2017 got off to a slow start with nothing painted for two weeks. This week I git painting a couple of trolls. I love these miniatures and will be sad once I've painted all the troll variants available.

most excellent :D
-
I love these trolls. Great work!
-
Those are proper trolls! Nicely done.
-
Amazing trolls, love the skin colour!
-
I love those Ral Partha trolls and you've done a splendid job on them. It's getting harder to resist temptation and add them to the leadpile!
-
Thanks everyone. Lots more of these to come as well as Bob Olley's ogres and some orcs.
-
Managed to get another troll finished before I got distracted with other projects.

With GW releasing a new Slambo this week, I thought it was about time I got mine painted. I liked the colour scheme I used on my HeroQuest Chaos Warrior so much I had to use it on Slambo as well. When the new guy arrives he too will receive the red and green paint. I chickened out of doing the lightning on the cuirass.
-
Finished up a couple of Black Orcs recently, the Boss (two handed axe) and Big Boss (top photos). These black orcs will always remain my favourite models due to the nostalgia they inspire within me and getting into the hobby proper. I still have tons of the blighters to paint.
-
Great thread.
The trolls have turned out fantastic!
-
Some great new additions, Mr Bukkit.
Loving Slambo and his friends, I may get around to painting my own one day...
:-* ;)
And I missed that Troll somehow, which is bonkers as ya knows how much I likes them.
;D :-* ;D
-
Some very nice paintjob here! :o :o :o Great minis too, keep on updating!
-
The Trolls, Chaos Fellow, & the Lads in Green are all BEAUTIFUL creations; SPLENDID additions to The Cause....sorry to be so late saying so. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Nice orks in nice colours.
They really are characterful models.
-
Continuing the Slambo theme I finished up the new guy. Near the end of painting him I dropped him and snapped his delicate resin axe off. After much swearing and a cool down period I easily glued the axe back on and finished his base off. I'm happy with him and it's quite a nice model.
Here he is with his predecessors.
I also decided it was about time I made some decent dungeon tiles. The 3D ones were cool but impractical. So armed with some blue foam I knocked this up.

I've just had a pleasurable few minutes looking over this thread with a cup of char in hand. It's all most excellent, but I am especially pleased to see Bob Olley's Ral Partha Trolls getting some love - the blue skin is an especially unique touch. Oh, and that dungeon tiles looks particularly crusty, which is of course positive. More of that please.
Here are links to pics of some of my Olley Trolls, if you are interested:

Looking great, 3 generations of Slambo painted up in an iddentical scheme :).
Still, I like the Heroquest version best, even though it's the least detaild one. The current Slambo, it just lacks something, don't know what but it doesn't work me...
-
Superb!

I agree - I've always preferred the single-axed version. There's something about double axes that just doesn't work for me - the difficult of edge alignment, I think. And the new Slambo looks to have even odder proportions than the original: good childbearing hips, to say the least!
All three look great here, though - top-notch paintjobs! It's a really nice - and original - colour scheme.

Love those earthy tones on your trolls. Really emphasise Bob Olley's awesome sculpts. I can't get enough of them.
Superb!

I agree with you both about the HeroQuest Chaos Warrior. He's my favourite too, from a nostalgia point of view and I think his armour is the best. I also like the single big axe over dual wield. I love painting those old plastics up.
-
Wow those Slambos scale fairly well together. I expected the new one to be HUGE!
I love the black orcs as well. Some of my favourite GW minis from that era too.
-
Very nice, both the tile and slambo, I agree with you guys I like the hero quest one best, I think the axes on the new one are too weeny
-
I finished up a few more dungeon tiles.

A couple more tiles done and a throne room.

Finding myself painting Skaven once again but a newer model this time. One of my favourite miniatures to come out of the newer Skaven.
-
Needing a break from painting goblins for Lord of the Rings, I painted up this Barbarian. I'm often quite daunted by Red Box sculpts initially until I start to paint them and the details reveal themselves. Some of my favourite characterful RPG miniatures around.
-
Lovely additions, Mr Bukkit!
:-* :-*
I am a particular fan of that Rat Ogre and it is great to see your version.
:)
-
Thanks very much. This particular rat ogre is my favourite rat ogre (apart from the old Boneripper) so much so it's the second time I've painted him. This one I painted for a local toy store's painting competition and won second prize, a copy of Dreadfleet. Dead chuffed with the placing.
-
Another model finished before I go back to work tomorrow. Need to find the rest of his brothers now.
-
Those Red Box gobbo brutes are lovely models, and you have done it justice here. Very nice indeed.
-
Thank you. They are indeed lovely models. I doubt I'll ever need more than a few but I want to get the other two sets anyway.
Managed to get one more finished before going to bed. Former Red Box Games dwarf.
-
Very nice painting.
-
With an impending dungeon crawl coming up in a few months, I needed to get some more undead painted for the story I'll be running.
-
Nice work (why are the flowers always fresher where the undead have trod? ;) ).
-
Very nice. I have that one, I think Otherworld do the best Skeleton warriors around.
Nice work (why are the flowers always fresher where the undead have trod? ;) ).
Entrails make good fertilizer?
-
Some more Otherworld skeletons. As Beefcake says, they're really are the best skeletons on the market.

-
I painted the armored skeletons and I fully agree with you. Though, the new skeletons that GW pulled out years ago are nice looking too.
-
The Vertically Challenged One & his Living Impaired Associates are all BEAUTIFULLY painted & based creations. I love the bone tones & the coat of grime the Skeletons are sporting. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
Just finished up this more modern model. A Putrid Blightking. Probably had too much fun painting this guy, making his skin bruised and painting all the sores and puss filled boils.

-
Eww. Well done.
-
You really did those skeletons justice, and the verdigris on the blightking is lovely. How do the skeletons scale with other figures? I've found the Otherworld stuff quite on the larger side scale wise.
-
Good work on the blight king. It's a rare contemporary GW kit I pick up but I just broke down for one of these.
