Title: Samurai gaming in Tucson
Post by: Landsknecht on April 13, 2016, 08:04:07 AM
We did the Assassination mission from the Ronin book.  The ninjas successfully killed the Grandmaster of the Sohei.  It was a fun game and we are planning on playing again this weekend.

Thanks!

Are you talking about the fenced in yards or the rice paddies?

Fenced yards.

I have not considered rice fields yet as my table is quite small (3x3)

I started with a tavern thats almost done, and it will have more traditional wall, but I wanted something cool and easy for future peasant huts!
I am thinking about similar stone weighted roofs but did not have any idea for easy yards for them.

All the buildings are from Plasticraft Games even the pagoda.  I love their buildings, very economical.  They are made of a polystyrene foam sheets that are high density enough to be able to take spray paint without melting.

The fenced in yard I intend on getting a weave for so they are currently unfinished.  I plan on going to the craft store in the near future to see if they have wreath for basket weaving.

Damn you got me i thought its some Japanese styled sparse fencing, weaving will make it useful in many more settings but will be much more complicated :D

I am making my Tawern from scratch (and I chose to ambitious building as a first foray into construction - but its nearly finished now) and I will do some smaller huts myself too, and I plan to add 2 or 3 4ground buildings. No one around carries plasticraft and with shipping they are not so favorably priced against 4ground.

If you are in America you can get Plasticraft from The War Store or Miniature Market websites.  In Europe, you should be able to get Plasticraft from anyone selling Infinity Miniatures.

Very fine looking table.
How do you like the rules?
I purchased them a number of months ago.
Sadly, took a look at them and put them in my pile of rules.
Loaned them to a friend. He likes them.
But he thinks combat may take to long.
Do you have a opinion?

Hi Marine,

if your friend thinks combat takes too long, he propably only like games which take no longer than 30 minutes... ;)

We played some games with 150 to 200 Points and find combat fast and furious. After a few rounds you get used to the token distribution and then it is quite deadly.

Yes, the game flow is fast.  I can see how larger numbers of miniatures could increase complexity but we have not gone above 200 points.

You probably also ought to house rule a maximum model count...the peasants list is one that is nearly impossible to really do anything against and takes forever to do anything while being hard to actually beat because it's entire thing is having enough minis to just get something through...

I didn't know there is a Ronin forum???

HERE (http://roninskirmishrules.freeforums.org/index.php)

It's got a few things there that are interesting.

Yes, the game flow is fast.  I can see how larger numbers of miniatures could increase complexity but we have not gone above 200 points.

Above 200 points it still tends to work well enough.

The comment about the peasants is one that most people would never use, and is almost entirely a list designed to create problems...it relies entirely on the beasic, unupgraded peasants that are, if I remember right, 2 points each so at 200 points for a game, that's 100 of them on the field...

I added the weave work to the pens that I made.  I used doorbell wire which came in white and red colors.

Another game of Ronin.  Peasants with Ronin support fighting against Bushi.

Turn 1:  Bushi is approaching the town with a mounted samurai leader and 8 ashigaru.  The peasants await their arrival in the animal corals and the Ronin are coming down the road from the archway.  Ashigaru archers find their mark on a peasant in the coral.

Turn 2:  Mounted samurai leader and 2 ashigaru engage two Ronin.  One Ronin falls to the Samurai leader and the ashigaru's career comes to a quick end.  Peasants in the closer coral attempt to sneak around the house but the ashigaru archers let them have it.

Turn 3:  Mounted samurai leader circles around the house to catch the peasants by surprise while the ashigaru engage the ronin advancing into the melee.  Ashigaru archers continue to find their marks on exposed peasants.

Great looking terrain.
So what made you change rule sets?
May I ask, where did you get the Dragons?
They are very well painted.

wow - fantastic GA board - I clicked on your thread partly  as I wondering about the potential for using 'official' ronin figures for GA ... and here you are doing this.
I'm more a denizen of the sub-board on this site for the GA game, so will post a thread linking here (which I think is ok?) - but maybe you could think about posting there yourself?

* mind you looking through the thread again, I realise I'm not sure which figure ranges you're using ...
