I got me a couple of boxes incl the excellent LBS shield transfers in sufficient numbers yesterday at Salute. Although busy painting the new Perry Brits I couldn't resist squeezing one of them in as well:

I'm looking forward to get into them properly already 8)

My God, you are a painting machine, man!
He looks great. Not quite as cartoony-looking as the painted 3-ups previously shown by GB.
-
A fine bit of painting, there! Really nice.
-
You don't hang about, nicely turned out too. Figure doesn't look half bad either.
-
Lovely painting, very atmospheric photography :-*
-
Brilliant work ! This is the first good example of the kit I have seen so far. Can I ask how you like them and how they compared to metal counter parts? This has me torn between footsore and a box of these. Keep up the good work.
-
Thats marvelous!
-
Very nice. Suitably grim!
-
Now that's what I call a really superb paint-job! Congrats!
Got a few of the Roman boxes myself and have been experimenting with them. Combined with the GB Dark Age warriors and the GB Saxon Thegns lots of conversion possibilities.
And with Goths and/or Vandals and Late Roman cavalry in the pipeline almost endless.
-
Lovely work on that mini, paint job is great, love the "gritty" look you achieve on your minis, more please :)

More are wip and I've ordered a metal Scorpio as well.
I think all ranked up they will make a fine looking legion 8)

Very nice.
Do you use some kind of filter (either physical or digital) when taking Pictures of the minis, please? Asking because there seems to be some kind of 'grittyness' to the whole of the pictures that I cannot quite put my finger on.
-
That's not a 'filter' mate, that's an old iPhone4S and too little daylight..

lol
Well, I did suspect that light might have something to do with it, but I assumed that it was an artistic thing, not a shortage of up-to-date gear... :)
Thanks for the answer - I think the 'grittyness' suits your painting style, anyway, which is why I was curious.
-
Additionally Photobucket does seem to make them look even more pixelated o_o
Oh well, two more for the legion:

really nice work.
-
Really nice paintwork; love the vexillarius.
-
Your paintjob is great - I am collecting Patricians and really wanted this release to be good - figures look 7/10 (9/10 with your painting) but 16 archers! No use to me as I have them in metal. Pity really
Can't wait for the Goths though
-
Dammit, I really don't need to be lured into this... lol

Next up are two archers, both are nearly finished.

Great job on these!! :-* :-*
I agree with Captain Bloods earlier post. I too found the 3-ups cartoony looking, but I don't see that with these.
Its the release of GB's plastic and metal Goths that interests me, hopefully there want be too much of a wait for them.
-
They look grand 8)
I also see some GoT conversion potential in these figures :D

Aha!
That works surprisingly well :-*
Nice one SP.
-
Very well done. :-* :-*
And that GOT transformation is very good and simple. :)
-
Superb :-* - really enjoy SP's painting style!
-
Nice work!
I'm working on this box as well at the moment, I've built about half of them. I've mixed in heads and bodies from the viking plastics and find that works quite well to add variation, which I think the box lacks a bit in as is.
-
just stunning!!! Glad I bought a box at Salute too
-
@Tom
Looking forward to seeing yours mate!
Here the second archer and another legionary with a plastic Saxon spear arm:

Slow but beautiful progress! :-*

Brilliant! I didn't imagine the Viking Hirdmen and Saxon Thegns could be used for kitbashing with these.
Gives a lot more possibilities for this somewhat 'monopose' set!
I guess, the un-armoured Dark Age Warriors arms could be used with the un-armourd bodies, too - and vice versa - and all of a sudden it became much more probable that I will get a set of these!
-
I'm glad that someone else has noticed the lack of variety in the archer's poses, if anyone's thought of good conversion/remodelling techniques I'd be keen to see your ideas, I might try some cutting and repositioning on the arms.

I was actually considering removing the quivers and reassign them to the front rank. There are some spare shields which is handy.
I also will have a look at the Fireforge plastic medieval archers and see what parts could be used..

Are you painting on the facial hair or do some of the heads come with beards?

Beards are just painted on..'twas the fashion ;)
Plus it conceals the Mick Jagger lips somewhat..

Enjoying these a lot. Well done!

Anyone else think there's potential for a GOT Ghiscari Legion here? Cpn Blood? Jimbibbly? Tomrommel?
-
for Ghis I would use greek oplite instead, for the late romans I was thinking of using them as Volantene troops (in combination withfuture Byzantine miniatures from fireforge).
-
Would second the Volantene idea
-
SP,
I have looked at a lot of your painted miniature over the last couple of years, and the figure companies owe you some royalties for all the miniatures I have purchased based on your work.
I love these plastic guys!!!!
-
Very nice brush work but...
I've painted plenty of GB's other plastics which I quite like but I have to say that I'm still not sold on this set. I really dislike the leg bindings which look too precise and I think the poses look a bit rigid.
-
Just to clarify the situation as regards planned GB plastic sets, according to a reply to a query I received from Andy, the company has no plans to release dedicated Germanic infantry; that niche is considered already filled by the existing sets. There will be a generic light cavalry box, then sets of specific heavy cavalry types, such as Roman and Vandals/Goths.

That's disappointing. If they released seperate metal heads to supplement the Dark Ages and Roman boxes they could greatly expand it's usability.

Agreed, need some swabean knots!
-
Indeed bad news on the Goth/ Vandal infantry :(
But hey, never say never! At least we will get two sets of cavalry :-*
I haven't done too much for my Late Romans recently although I did build plenty..
Here my latest additions, one legionary and an auxiliary:

I really like you gritty, realistic style. How do you achieve the 'dust' effect on the shields? It looks very nice indeed and I would like to emulate it. Dry pigments?

Truly stunning work! I'm really suffering having to choose between a few boxes of these, or Betrayal at Calth o_o

If I had to guess, it appears our painter applied the same colour used for the base grit and drybrushed it onto the underside of the shield. Please correct me if I'm off the mark!
-
Sorry for the super late reply gents!!!
The dust effect is actually done with Mig Pigments Dry Mud. I've tried dry brushing with Baneblade Brown which has a good colour match but it looked too 'painted'..
No further Romans as yet as I am rather busy right now but I am looking forward to painting the Ballista already 8)

If you're looking for alternate heads for these chaps, it may be worth your while to check out Westwind Productions' separate head options for their Arthurian range: http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=192_69_145
Lots of options available for Romans, Celts, and Saxons.

Very nicely done. The gritty look does add quite some atmosphere.

Are you painting on the beards, or do they come beardy?
The archers...are the quivers preattached on the sides? ( For conversion purposes, I'm looking for back quivered figures like these....).
Thanks for any answers.
