Title: New Resin Pulp Project
Post by: Zoogla on January 23, 2007, 09:28:50 AM
Hey guys.
At the beginning of February I am going to Holland to visit my good friend and gifted hobbyist GeBoom (check out http://www.shiftinglands.com for the things he has done so far). I will be staying over at his place for 3 days and we would like to start a new project, best for the Pulp era, since this is very popular at the moment.
What I want from you guys are some suggestions what this project should be all about. There are so many different .45 adventures going on and maybe some of them could use some kind of specific scenery we would be designing during these 3 days. It shouldn't be too big of a project, so we have the chance to work on it from start to finish.
Our first idea are some kind of Zeppelin, or submarine.

If it is desired, I would be willing to post a regular progress report during my visit.

What do you think is desperately needed in the world of Pulp? :)

There was some desire for a small plane:

A small resin pulp between-the-wars fighter would be pretty fun. It'd be a biplane with an enclosed cockpit, and not much bigger than a GW Rhino, ideally. Then depending on the paint job, you could have an fighter from an Air Pirate band, a Zeppelin Jagdgeschwader Staffel, or a US Navy squadron!

Thanks for posting this Zoogla.

I must say that the pulp area is getting more and more interesting so I will indeed try and do some modelling together with Z within the pulp area.
Although I prefer to do an actual resin zep (not too big) I am open/we are open for any suggestions whatsoever.
I am not too good at going realistic all the way. I like some twists so if we come up with something then beware that it might look somewhat out of the ordinary.

Some kind of transport for the Artizan Air Pirates and the Pulp Figures Zeppelin Troopen would be good.

How about a Pulp spacecraft like Flash Gordon's?

out of the ordinary is what Pulp is all about, isn't it? :-)
Like the idea of a plane. Hmm, need more time, damnit!

As much as Iīd love the idea of a 28mm Zep, I must strongly advise against using Resin for the Floating Body - even if hollow cast, this will be heavy as well and fall apart faster than a Ming vase taking a dive off a table.

Now, if you could do the Floating Body as vacu parts, and the engine and crew gondolas from resin, that would be cool.

Otherwise, Iīd strongly support the "Pulpenplane". Maybe do a two-seater, since it could be used as a fighter-bomber, recon plane, air mail plane, and with a cunningly-wrought cockpit cover as a one-seat fighter.

yes, zep and plane would be cool. Also some mad scientist stuff, crazy devices, a sort of wall plates to build a labaratory, a "retro" rocket, rocket launching pad.

Yah!  Maybe a full mad-scientist lab with test bed, tables full of test tubes, flasks and beakers, and a giant ray-gun type thing pointing at the test bed!

Hey hey!
Great ideas here, I guess Zoogla and I will need much more time then the 3 days we have planned for now. (No worries there will be more sessions this year)
The zep could well be a hollow cast and not that heavy. I do agree on the playability. You must be able to actually do something with the device rather then some object that is floating around in watter or in the air.

I like the mad scientist lab idea. Any pictures/drawings/scetches of some sort might help a lot!
I also keep on looking at the possible sub/Zeb issue.

That might indeed work! Split it halfways bottom-top, so that you get a lower half, on (or rather, within) which you could place gas bags, a gantry, and a bomb-dropping hell device like in "Murder, Inc."

I've got to second the zeppelin, mad scientist's lab and plane suggestions.

However rather than a 1 or 2 seater plane, I'd prefer to see something slightly bigger - with three engines! - perhaps an amalgam of a Ford Trimotor, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_trimotor) Fokker F.VII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fokker_F.VII) and a Junkers Ju52 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_Ju_52/3m) but sized smaller than a 1/48 model would be (to fit better on the gaming tables). You can more in and out with a transport plane after all...

A Flash Gordon-style rocket ship would also be very nice. Like this (http://www.retro1-2-3.com/store/prodinfo.asp?number=112003275&variation=&aitem=6&mitem=10) but *way* less expensive

And a wild crazy Last Crusade-style tank would nice. Yes, I can get them on eBay but not without paying a small fortune.
Why not start here: Vickers A1E1 Independent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickers_Independent_A1E1_tank) or Mark VIII Liberty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_VIII_%28tank%29)

And finally, I'd love to see the Venture (http://www.nzcoastalshipping.com/V%20enture1956a%20%20221204.jpg) (the ship from Jackson's King Kong) in a waterline format.

Also, a transport plane for Buzz Barker or Dakota Harris would be great!!  Something like a 1/56th Dakota DC3 or Grumman Goose would be lovely!!

Since that's a scene from ERB's John Carter of Mars series, with the beauty about to have her brain swapped with that of the old crone, I'd suggest that David Soderquist of Bronze Age Minis sculp that scene.  He has a growing line of figures useable for Martian games.  Disturbing that I can actually remember that story.  Maybe that's from "Mastermind of Mars" ???

Hi all, just read through and want to start now. Anyway Magister Militum do resin SF wall, control panels and corridors. You probably know this but I didn't see them mentioned. Small pieces start at Ģ2.40 up to Ģ26 for a large room or 12" corridor section. They look great and are well made. The web add is   www.magistermilitum.com

Hey guy!
Time to say hello from Holland. I arrived sometimes today morning and we already made some progress. Ok, the last posts of Grimm and Dominic turned the tides and we started building a ship :-) It is still not determined what it will look like in the end, but I promised to post pictures of any potential progress. That looks like a very useful size. The bow shape is a bit awkward, but I canīt wait for the finished model...

Can we expect to see some ship tramps to go with the tramp ship and the harbour district already available? ;)

Post by: PeteMurray on February 08, 2007, 04:23:26 PM
It's great for .45Adv. For the size of it, it looks like you could do the ship as half the board and the wharf as the other half. It looks biggish.

There are a great many sailors out on the market now! The ship won't hurt for crew.

How do you say "tramp ship" in Dutch? Or Deutsch, for that matter.
Title: New Resin Pulp Project
Post by: Zoogla on February 08, 2007, 05:17:58 PM
Ok, here you see the basic body, complete with railing and ready to be cast in silicone. The figure should give a nice impression of the size. If the body would be any smaller we would be running into problems fitting nice superstructural parts on the boat. The boat measures 12*39,5cm at the moment.
The silicone rubber mold will then be filled with dental plaster, so we will be able to carve structure and detail in the plaster body.
Pictures will follow :)

What we are constantly thinking about is the superstructural parts that will be placed on top of the finished "base", so any suggestion would be reallt appreciated!

Trampfrachter (literally, Tramp freight ship). Itīs a "Lehnwort", ie. "borrowed term".

Looks great! Iīd go for a central bridge superstructure and front and aft hatches, so you can stow a giant ape in the forward cargo bay, and the Ark of the Covenant aft...

Hi guys!

We made quite some progress on the boat and I want to show some more pictures of the evolving project.
At the moment we are fully occupied by detailing the ship's hulk, a mold with the first superstructures will be ready in about an hour, I can give you an update then.
We are planning to make this ship easy to customize. There will be the hulk on which you can place different sets of superstructural elements. Depending on how far we will get with the first layout we might make some more parts for a second one.
Here are some pictures:

Preparing and puring the silicone rubber in the first mold for the plaster ship

Hey guys!
After some minor set backs like bad casts, fatigue and a short lack of new ideas we are back at full pace and made good progress today.

Yesterday evening we played around with an possible setup for the upper decks on the ships:

Today morning I started with the final detailing on the hulk with adding a couple hundred rivest and giving the lower cabins something to look at, like metal  ledges, portholes and dozens of rivets as well

Then we started building the upper deck with making a temporary mold for a plaster cast
(http://160.45.15.47:443/upload/19.jpg)

At the moment the hulk, lower cabins and the upper deck are being molded so we start resin casting this evening!

Hi guys!

Thanks for all your comments on the boat over the last few days, some ideas might find its way to a second or revised boat, but after GeBoom spent half of the night casting, we would like to show you the final version of the first Boat.
Since I (Zoogla) will be leaving to Belgium in about 20minutes there is no time for a painted version right now :)
Hope you liked our little progress report on this 3 day project and I am pretty sure, we will repeat this kind of session in the future!!!!

I'm with Dominic on the length needing about 6 more inches, but if the price is decent with shipping to the US, I'd pick one of these up right now. It would fit nicely on the 2'x 2' docks I use for my games.

Attractive resin work.  Understand this is intended to be a merchant steamer, but the shape of the hull and superstructure, and the proportions, reminds me more of a tugboat, perhaps an oceangoing tugboat.  I imagine it moving barges on a river or moving steamers in and out of harbor, given the right detail pieces.  A gun could be added for wartime.

Hello All,

Time for me to reply to you all. I left the posts to Zoogla while I kept on doing my part on the boat.
It was a first time ever that I worked on a more realistic structure. Looking back at the project I must say that we had a great learning experience and actually pulled it off , meaning that we started with nothing and within 3 days we had a complete resin boat in our hands.
My personal learning experiences are that I now know that making VSF/Pulp/realistic structures can be fun as well although I still am more on the non realistic side of things.
Making metal like structures was new for me but it worked out well.
Making a boat like this in three days is actually nuts!
If you want a truly realistic looking vessel then you simply need more time or better sculptors for that matter.
I am invited by Zoogla to come along with him to Hamburg on the 24/25 February. I might do so and might even take some of my stuff along, if I do I will bring this project of ours.
About this steamboat and the questions that where asked about its availability. I only will cast the ship when there are any requests. Zoogla introduced me to the Pulp genre and I must say it does look appealing. So I guess I will try and make some more Pulp related items in the future.
Another vessel might be the case but first I have to finish my docks project.

Greetings
Geboom

Well done guys, an amazing achievment in only 3 days. A little more time working out details is all you need, not better sculptors. This is pushing me to get my VSF flyer pieces shaped ready to try and cast. Keep up the good work
