I've got some building bases to make for David Imrie for his Carlist Wars project. The two layouts and initial start are below.
Generally stucco but the smaller building on the first base will be raw stone. I'm looking forward to making the church but they'll be done one at a time.

Another soon to be awesome Bibbly building 8) 8)
Will the church and posh house be on the same base or separate? They look a little close if based together no?
Cheers
Matt

Thank you kindly :)

That is the intention but as you say, they might be a little cramped. I'll have word with David and see if the base can be a little wider :)

Good stuff mate! Finished yet? ;)
With ALL these projects, you must have a team of underlings!

A promising start mate!

Thanks gents :)
Good stuff mate! Finished yet? ;)
With ALL these projects, you must have a team of underlings!
Not quite, just a wife working the bank holiday and no normal work to worry about :D
Finished the main bulk of the main building and added the timbering to the front. The doors are yet to be done along with the balcony and roof structure obviously. There will be a texture mix applied to all the walls and a lesser version applied in between the timbers.

Love watching this stuff come together.

Looking great so far James!
I think the Church and Posh house on their own
bases would be nice?

Cheers fellas :)

Yeah, just sent you a text before seeing this lol
150mm x 200mm for each would work I think.

I like that building arrangement a lot. Is that foamed pvc boards you're using?
-
Looking good already!
Lucky Mr Imrie... ;)
-
Nice start, looking forward to seeing this one unfold.
By the by does Posh still have a house in Spain? I thought she and Becks decamped for Los Angeles?
-
Can you tell me what your texturing mix recipe is? I never seem to get it looking right when I try to make a stucco effect.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Is that foamed pvc boards you're using?
Nope, just normal mounting board and foamcore.
By the by does Posh still have a house in Spain? I thought she and Becks decamped for Los Angeles?
That's why it'll be a bit run down but very expensive ;)
Can you tell me what your texturing mix recipe is? I never seem to get it looking right when I try to make a stucco effect.
For this build it's a mix of Sandtex masonry paint, fine sand, powder wall filler and wood glue. No idea as to the respective amounts, just whatever looks right.
Finished the basic painting for the building and timber. Got some weathering to do on it but that'll be at the end when the other building and remaing walls are done. Looks a bit washed out due to the crappy English bank holiday weather ::)

That looks great! This is going to another cracker of a build.

Woo! 8)

Brilliant mate! For all the timber and texture and stuff, its the different coloured bricks showing through the plaster that do it for me.
Is it going to be a flat roof? ???

I like it!

Thank you kindly :)

Not wanting to take over this thread. However, I thought people would like to see some figures that I have been painting to fight around these buildings.
David

:-* very nice indeed!

Cracking building :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Some very nice figures there as well, lovely paint work tell us a bit more about them please?

Thanks, I have a blog here...

It is just a fun wee project using the fantastic
Perry range of figures. I know very little about the
Period but do like what I have read so far.
If there is enough interest...I'll start a Carlist war thread.

Wonderful paintwork David.
And another great build underway James :)
-
You can see how special it's going to look already, lovely stuff James, and beautiful figures David.
-
Start a thread David, it'll go down well :)
More work done in building one and the stables. Just the windows to blank out, doors to make and roof to build (carcass for the roof is done).

Nice!

Excellent stuff! Had that been me the vertical joints would be splitting by now and the whole thing would be as warped as an episode of 'Adventure Time'. I don't know how you do it? Yes I do, it must be magic.

Huge talent
It already looks superb and its not even finished yet!

Lovely
But what is a julet door?
-
Lovely
But what is a julet door?
A Juliet balcony is the platform Juliet stands on outside her bedroom window proclaiming "Romeo, romeo where fore art thou you randy little Bugger?"
-
Wot 'e' sed. Technically it's a balconet a mini, semi functional balcony.
Dunno whether Spain followed suit but in Portugal at the time, it was common for married upper class women to be provided with a covered, enclosed balcony to allow the ladies to discretely survey the outside world without being seen. Part of the Moorish tradition that survived the reconquista. It was still widespread enough into the 18th C to be remarked upon in traveller's accounts and the style was even exported to the colonies, including Brazil. Usually of latticed woodwork, which is why few remain on original structures.
-
Really nice little piece of Spain..
What is the material you are making roof with ?
-
Very nice painting and building. :-* :-*
-
Late reply as I've been bus at work with not much chance to progress this until today.
I don't know how you do it? Yes I do, it must be magic.
Sealed with superglue ;)
What is the material you are making roof with ?
Wills sheeting pantiles. Useful material to have for this sort of thing.
COmpleted the roof on the main building and started on the second.

Nice roofing 8)
-
Tasty! The roof really brings the structure together.
-
The roof loos great with the ridge tiles. Awesome sauce. ;D
-
That aint half bad, mate.
:-*
You should show them architectural modeller blokes how to make things properly.
:D
-
Wonderful!
Looks like you are using cut up plastic tubing for the ridge tiles. Just a tip for future ref. I've found that you can do the same thing using cut up plastic drinking straws. Just bond a couple together to get the right thickness. They are easier to cut and work, as a slice down the middle with a craft knife gives you the basic tile shape and they are a damn sight cheaper than using Evergreen plastic modelling parts.
-
Awesome! :o
How are you planning on hiding the seam where the roof joins?
-
That's just amazing :o Very inspiring. Thank you for sharing :)
-
Thanks for the comments gents :)
Should have it finished tonight.

None of this is square so I'd get laughed out of the workshop lol

I tried drinking straws many years ago and really wasn't happy with them for various reasons. I don't mind paying extra for quality materials for a quality end product :)
How are you planning on hiding the seam where the roof joins?
Just a bit of runny filler, not too much though.

I have not found anything 'square' in a real house yet, so I reckon this must be more realistic.

Not quite ;)
Nearly done, will be finished tomorrow evening.

There will be a church and a posh house, both on separate bases.
This one is done now and below are a few photos. I'll be moving onto the church next :)

The dog's knackeroos. I really like the cluster effect and the space between the buildings. I'd really like to do that but storage is such a major issue. Great job,, really like it.

Many thanks again gents :)
Looking forward to making the church now :D

Wow, incredible work. :-* Not really exceeding expectations, but you have set that standard quite high for yourself Mr. bibbly. ;) :D

All I can say is 'Ole!'
And - Lush.

Got the second base underway, this time a church. Inspiration taken from various examples from around Spain.
Dodgy photos due to me still being at my folks. Still undecided as to howto complete the tower but I'm sure it'll come to me :)

Nice! The tower? Go lush, go baroque.
Here's the church I was married in, NS do Rosário dos Pretos, for inspiration. OK it's Portuguese baroque and and it's in Brazil but there are very similar styles in Spain and across Latin America.
-
Lovely start

A most impressive start, sir.

Church looks great so far! ;D

Nice! The tower? Go lush, go baroque.
The decision was made to go Romanesque so it can be used for earlier periods if necessary. I do like the baroque style though :)
Just don't put a dome on it, eh....?
;D
Two words. One of them is hat, the other is arse. Arrange them at your leisure ;D
And carrying on from where I left off...
All the main construction is done along with the roofing and architectural details, the only thing left to make is the Romanesque door way but I'll be doing that at work this coming week. Also needs a cross on the tower, debating whether to solder one in brass or laser cut it.

Looking very good. The roofs will tie the collection in nicely.
-
Lasercut the cross so you can magnetise the base, to prevent accidents and to make it swappable in the future?
-
Lovely work :-* :-* :-*
-
Another great build in progress. I'm missing the individual bricks on these though.
-
Gorgeous. I also vote for a magnetised cross. :)
-
Looks wonderful James.
I hope there will be a bell in that tower though...
(Gamer Mac is the traditional LAF supplier of Hispanic church bells, I recall? ;))
-
Thanks gents :)
I'll see what David says about the cross and I do have a bell around here somewhere.
cheers
James
-
Lovely work. Simple Romanesque works as well. Crosses are as often as not absent from the tower on churches of that type.
Do be careful extracting the bell from the cat though, it's probably got used to it as an adornment. Of course if you plan a replacement, then a good, solid brass bell, weighing at least half the cat's body weight, will usually prevent them from chasing birds and climbing up onto the furniture. ;)
-
Fortunately it's from a chocolate bunny ;)
Interesting about the cross, I've got a couple of pictures that have them and a couple that have not. I'm assuming it's a more modern addition then?
cheers
James

Looks great. It will compliment the one you have done already, should be a lovely village when the whole is finished. ;D
-
Sorry I am all out of bells. Lindt don't put the on the chocolate anymore :'(
-
James, you never cease to amaze! :o
-
And the work continues :)
Finished the construction and painted on the texture although I might put a few flagstones at the front. Still the windows to cut out but they will be stuck in when the building is painted.

Coming together nicely. :)

Pebble dash or adobe? The church could usually afford plasterers, generally being the wealthiest institution in any community. If not left in dressed stone most churches would be plastered smooth. No doubt there are examples with roughly plastered walls.
That said it, it's coming along nicely.

Excellent work, in particular on the church, and great inspiration. Can't wait to see more.

Pebble dash or adobe? The church could usually afford plasterers, generally being the wealthiest institution in any community. If not left in dressed stone most churches would be plastered smooth. No doubt there are examples with roughly plastered walls.
I did see a couple of photos on my 'travels' (internet) of rough plaster work and in hindsight I should've done a few exposed stone patches ::)
Ah well, the roof is well and truly stuck on so no chance of that now lol

Jesus Christ that's good! The thing I love about missing seeing your threads is I don't have to wait for you to complete wonderful pieces like this.

Top Job

Thanks chaps :)

Awesome sauce. ;D
-
Dios mio! What a wonderful church.
-
Does the job!
-
Beautiful pieces!
You did or didn't treat the baseboards in any way? The structures should prevent warping is my guess yet there's a lot of hand-wringing out how to prevent one side or another bending up. Thoughts?
-
Thanks again :)

No treatment on the bases as the structure does most of the work and the gloop I use doesn't warp over small areas :)

Stunning work, love it
-
Lovely work Jim :-* :-* :-*
Really nice roof/roofs
-
Great work, James!
-
A Juliet balcony is the platform Juliet stands on outside her bedroom window proclaiming "Romeo, romeo where fore art thou you randy little Bugger?"
"Wherefore?" means "why?"; does one still have to point this out?
-
I rather like that you didn't do the exposed brick bit - seems everyone always does. But I actually like the angle of the model on the base best. I wonder how good your work will be when you get good at this?! lol
-
Fantastic, as expected after a splendid build. I'm on vacation in the mediterranian atm so have real life reference. You caught the flair extremely well. Truely inspiring!
I'm surprised there is no Cross on top of the tower. Is that for durability or Design reasons?
-
Belated thanks again chaps :)
Got another base on the go but this is for a different client (keeping it in the same thread for ease). I'm still pondering the best look for the posh house but I'm nearly there and will start that soon enough.
This one is in a similar style to the first one I did but keeping it different enough so it's unique.

There will be a little wall at the side of the small outhouse, a wood supported colonnade under the building jetty and probably a tree :)
I'm surprised there is no Cross on top of the tower. Is that for durability or Design reasons?
Most of them don't seem to have crosses so, no cross :)

Lovely stuff as usual James, and may I say I love the red on that chaps tunic :-*

Got the timbering and texture done for both buildings, got some more pantiles on order as I've nothing left big enough for the main roof. Will get some paint on it either tonight or tomorrow :)

Good old Wills, I thought it was them

Well, got most of it painted but I've run out of windows and pantiles so I'll have to wait until I can get some more. The little shed is done apart form the door and I've roughed out the side wall.

I'l probably get the wall and groundwork done tonight then I'll have to put it to one side to await supplies :)
cheers
James
-
Very nice indeed. ;D
-
How do you achieve that lovely eggshell / beige colour of the walls?
-
Thanks chaps :)
The textured paint is already a creamy colour, it gets a wash of thin brown ink and then a suitable drybrush of off white. Hope that helps :)
cheers
James
-
Well, doesn't that look just lovely?
:-*
-
Thanks a lot for the feedback and keep up the great work.

I love removable roofs to hide things in. Splendid work!

Looks even better in the flesh. ;D
I was fortunate to see the ground work and growies added earlier. It really is going to be a lovely model, I am sure the new owner will be very pleased. :)
Makes one consider doing 28mm Peninsular Nappies. lol
-
Very nice modeling. But what is with the open air squares in the interior of the still roofless building? Maybe a plan to have a figure supported inside to look out an upper window or two? Just curious.
-

Nah, they are just corner supports to make sure the material edges have a secure bond.

How could I miss this ??? Stunning real estate :-* :-* :-* :-*

Groundwork looks great Mr B

As always, racking work James!

And bloody lovely it is too.

Nice attention to detail, the variation in colouration on the roof tiles, stains on the walls and subtle weatehring on the woodwork bring it all together very well indeed.

Chop, chop, then.

That is rather splendid. I agree on the tile paintjob, it really makes the roof pop.

Lovely work!
James is one of the few modellers out there that understands that real pan tiled roofs are not uniform in colour.

Thank you chaps :)

There'll be a upper colonnade (lasered at work) and some decent planting to go on and a high-ish surrounding wall. It's also a bit bigger than was originally intended but the construction is a bit simpler than the others so that makes up for it.
Yes, those are dice in the corners, they are old and never get used (until now :D ).
The base needs cutting down and I'll do that at work tomorrow along with the upper colonnade :)
cheers
James
-
No lasered pvc? I feel as though all the dice should be set at sixes!
-
Another excellent building in progress. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
-
Thanks chaps, although admitedly there's not much to see at the moment.
No lasered pvc?
Nah, I occasionally feel the need to do it all by hand ;)
cheers
James

Should be impressive, looking forward to seeing how it develops. ;D

nice start again !!

KPHAW! :o
That last one turned out a real stunner James, I really like the wooden supports and growies, Its very atmospheric. :-*

:o is the paint just a textured paint over the foamcore James? Or is it a low grit goop? It has a nice texture but not too much ;)

It's a textured masonry paint called Santex (basically emulsion with bits in). It's getting increasingly difficult to get hold of but luckily I've got a 5ltr tub that should last till I snuff it :D

Looks lovely. The variation in tile colours really sells the roof.
-
Very swish, sir.
I like it!

I bet there is a tiny little estate agent out there somewhere who has it earmarked as a holiday home.
:D

Brilliant! :o well worth the effort mate!

Posh.
The tiles are a nice touch.

Your customer will be very pleased with that!

Came out great James. I especially love the way the roof came out, with the various colored tiles.
Speaking of roofs, what material would you recommend for doing Japanese castle walls and citadels? I have seen your own great Japanese buildings and always wanted to tackle a castle. Have you ever done any 'how-to' build articles on your work in this area? If so, please do share.
Again, a great Spanish building that I am sure the new owner will be very proud of!
-
Splendid!
-
Fantastic work!! ;)
-
Very nice. Have to echo what others have said about the tiles, the variation in colour works really well.
Steve
-
James, outstanding! I'm well happy with this and the other buildings. I will take an image of all the buildings together.

Splendid, that's the best one yet. :-*

Bleedin' gorgeous!

All the good superlatives have gone! That's a very fine building. The roof really is a modelling and painting masterclass.
-
Damn James, you are far too good at this stuff!
-
Posh.
The tiles are a nice touch.
Yes. Very tidy. Did you use the tile resin sheets you usually do?
-
splendid indeed

Wow!
What more can I say? I've not seen this thread before and I'm glad that I've seen it now. Fantastic work. I envy your building making abilities.
-
There are a few days during the year when I don't envy JimBibbly with a reckless, selfish jealousy. This is not one of those days. lol
-
Brilliant! :o
I particularly like the weathering. :-* The stains where water would run or pool are a touch of genious!
