Title: Great War Canadians
Post by: tim in saskatoon on May 06, 2016, 07:24:32 PM
I'm back to painting Great War Canadians for my Vimy project. Here are some recent additions..

Members of the Royal Canadian Regiment.

Detail of their formation patch - grey rectangle for the 3rd Division, surmounted by a green circle - green for the senior brigade in the regiment, circle for the senior battalion in the brigade.

Command elements of the 7th Brigade and 3rd Division.

I should have teh Princes Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry done by the end of the weekend - which will finish off the 7th Brigade (I've previously painted the 42nd and 49th Battalions - which filled out the rest of the 7th Brigade).

Hi, Tim, great to see that the Vimy project is still alive and well!

I don't know if it's so much "Alive and Well" as "wrested back from it's near eternal slumber by some evil necromancer..."

Thank you.

The Great War Miniatures are indeed lovely figures. I think they may be my favourite of all the figures I've painted for this project so far. My only complaint (if you could call it that) are the rifles are a touch on the slight side. I've broke one or two off and they are very difficult to mend...

Thank you all, again, for your kind comments.

How much time do you spend working on one of these?

It is hard for me to say, precisely. I tend to do work in batches. When miniatures arrive I base ALL of them, then prime them, then add the base texture/goop, then they will sit for some time (years even) until I get to painting them. When I do get to painting the figures I paint them in units, doing all the webbing, then all the wood, etc. I painted a unit of 15 last night in about 5 hours - which would be 20 minutes each for the painting. Adding in the time took to clean up and prep and base and prime I did earlier, as well as the finishing basing details I did after, I'd estimate it would average closer to half an hour per figure...?

Last night I finished up another unit...

Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry

Detail of their formation patch and unit shoulder title.

There are more details about the unit on my blog:

http://saskminigamer.blogspot.ca/2016/05/princess-patricias-canadian-light.html (http://saskminigamer.blogspot.ca/2016/05/princess-patricias-canadian-light.html)

Finishing up the PPCLI also finished up the entire 7th Brigade, 3rd Division, CEF

All of the miniatures used for the 7th Brigade are from Great War Miniatures.

You're not alone (I switch the prime and base texture steps and add a base coat of burnt umber over the black).

And the group shot is beautiful - a coherent body of miniatures. Well done.

12 to 16 figures at a time.
Love the unit photo.
May I ask," what is the total figure count?"
Title: Re: Great War Canadians
Post by: tim in saskatoon on May 10, 2016, 09:47:32 PM
Thanks again, everyone.

May I ask," what is the total figure count?"

You may... but which "total figure count"? for a Battalion? a Brigade? Division? All the figures I have painted? All the figures I plan to paint for the Vimy project?

There are 15 figures in each Canadian battalion, four battalions in a brigade makes 60, three brigades in a division makes 180. There were four divisions in the Canadian Corps, which would make 780 - for the infantry. I also have assorted figures for Brigade and Divisional Command, casualties, Machine Guns, Trench Mortars, and some Artillery... And that's just the Canadians... I will eventually have, I think 5 or 6 regiments of Germans  (3 battalions per regiment, 15 figures per battalion so 225-270 German infantry)

Currently I have four brigades completed along with a handful of MG teams and Trench mortars and command and casualty figures, and two more Brigades underway. I'd say I'd have close to 300 of the Canadians done. So far I have two regiments of the (later war) Germans done (so, ~100 of those...?)

This is just the stuff for the Vimy Project I am working on... I also have early Great War French and Belgians and Germans and British, as well as British and Germans for East Africa, and British and ANZACs and turks for the Middle east. Oh and Imperial Russians that could be used for the Great War as well as the Russian Civil War... and Bolsheviks... and Warlord Chinese... Most of those are done and you can see a lot of them here:

http://saskminigamer.blogspot.ca/p/28mm-great-war-era.html (http://saskminigamer.blogspot.ca/p/28mm-great-war-era.html)

(though I don't have pictures up of the Chinese or Bolsheviks or early Great War British or Turks or British in East Africa... I guess I should get on that...)

So what rules are you using?
Title: Re: Great War Canadians
Post by: tim in saskatoon on May 10, 2016, 10:05:35 PM
So what rules are you using?

Well... That's kind of up in the air at the moment. I had been using a modified version of 2nd Edition Contemptible Little Armies. I'd been thinking about trying something else, but I will likely use something similar - but perhaps with a few new tweaks (stealing elements and ideas from other rules I've encountered in the meantime).

If anyone has suggestions for a simple, fast-playing game that would work for battalions of 15 individually-based figures and could deal with an entire corps attack, I'm all ears!

A few more rolling off the workbench this week: 43rd Battalion, CEF (Cameron Highlanders of Canada)

The figures are all from Brigade Games (well, all but one - the piper is a spare I had from Great War Miniatures). I had to convert the Lewis gun team as Brigade Games does not produce a Highlander with a Lewis gun.

Detail of their formation patch - Grey rectangle, of the Third Canadian Division, surmounted by a blue circle - blue for the junior brigade in the division, circle for the senior battalion in the brigade.

They're not really NEEDED for my project, I mostly just picked them up for fun...

9th Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division.

I still need a Trench Mortar Battery for this Brigade (unfortunately Brigade games does not make one - and all the other figures in this brigade are from Brigade games...)

Finshing this brigade also finishes up the entire 3rd Canadian Division! I'll have to clear off a table and take a picture of the whole Division formed up!

I also happened to finish up a few odd extra figures this week...

Thanks Guys!

Nice, did you plan to get some tanks?

I do have some tanks. I haven't painted them yet.

I'm not sure if I'm going to worry about them for the Vimy project I'm currently working on. I know there were a few tanks attached to the Canadian Corps for the attack on Vimy, but if memory serves me correctly I think they all bogged down with in a few yards of the Canadian lines. I suppose if I have the time I'll get them done and just make them really slow and have to pass really hard bog checks every turn...

I'll definitely have some ready for when I get to Amiens and Cambrai!

Starting in on the Frist Canadian Division, I finished up two battalions of the 2nd Brigade this week. Truthfully, on of the battalions was 80% done previously (I only had to paint two new figures and touch up the helmets and formation patches)...

The 5th (Western Cavalry) Battalion, CEF (http://saskminigamer.blogspot.ca/2016/05/5th-western-cavalry-battalion-cef.html) was originally recruited largely from Militia Cavalry units in Western Canada – but went off to war as regular infantry.

10th Battalion, CEF (http://saskminigamer.blogspot.ca/2016/05/10th-battalion-canadians-cef.html).

All the figures in the 2nd Brigade are from Old Glory Miniatures. Each has two options for the lewis gunner: one that's prone and one that is standing, with his lewis gun out front - to be set upon a trench parapet.

I'm just about finished a third battalion for this brigade and should have the fourth done sometime next week. then it's onto the First Brigade... or perhaps some Germans.

Two more battalions finished up for the Vimy Project.

the first - the 16th Battalion - wasn't so much recently painted as they were "touched up a bit" - rebased, helmets and formation patches repainted, etc. The figures are quite old - they are, in fact, the very first models I ever modeled myself. I made the masters out of milliput and my friend that got me into modelling and casting cast them up for me!

(1st Corps' picture and model - not mine!)

I've already got one and it's sitting on the workbench awaiting assembly! It's not a huge priority at the moment as they didn't really have any role in the two actions I am working on building forces and terrain for (Somme and Vimy Ridge), but I will put it together at some point for giggles.

Just chuckling to myself(the range is all me so's the paint)its just lately every time I've done research or attended meetings its my own stuff that keeps coming up as examples(I know enough to know I don't know enough, so its Weird.)
That picture caused a few issues when it came out as the figure next to it is from the series 3  Austin's
It's there to hide the rear wheel (as its made from card)I dropped the model when it was about to be photographed and shattered the dammed thing and couldn't find the rear wheel.(no one noticed i'd knocked chunks out of the lights as well)
The reason I asked is because it's possible to drop the sides and end panel with very little effort. But the machineguns and belts need adjusting and a couple of dry runs to get a good position (use a bowl of hot water to soften the belt and hose as there a lot less likely to break when you flex them) also there's 2-3 mm of additional ammo belt so it may require a trim depending on the position of the gun
So in short it's far more of a fiddle than I like to make in a models, its just the nature of this car.So if you do get stuck feel free to pick my rather odd brains

Just chuckling to myself(the range is all me so's the paint)

Brilliant! The vehicles or the entire Great War line? I have an entire brigade worth of the British (which I am using as Canadian) infantry waiting to be painted (4th Brigade, 2nd Division, to be precise!) - and a few German command to be staff for my Germans (most of which I modelled and cast myself).

I also painted up a few of the Trench Raiders and snipers as well but, while I have posted them on my blog, I don't seem to have posted pictures of them here, so here they are:

Finally getting full battalions rolling off the workbench again after a bit too long of a summer hiatus!

Yep,
All the vehicles and crews, and all the infantry.
The trench raiders were never made to be cast. They were originally done as a series of greens on a painted trench section. For Salute one year, and were stylized as caricature's not as gaming figures.Simon got nagged for them that much he gave in and cast them.
All the infantry and heavy weapons(German as well)were never actually ment as a range. At the time I simply couldn't afford to buy Great War Miniatures. Simon was learning to cast in house so he offered me some mould space and I churned the lot out in a little over a month. So it was a win win situation.
I got to play with the concept of late war bantam Tommies, and bosh. They still fit in with my other figures I just like having short arse late war brits in ill fitting kit.As being six foot and over by the end of the war was proving to be a bit of an evolutionary dead end.
Simon added them to the WW1 vehicle range when it started just to pad out the range.until id had enough time to fit in more vehicles.
Only recently they seem to be in vouge.
I dont even have a full set of trench raiders!so it really is nice to see them being used.
I'm pretty sure there's a rouge green of a trench raider / sniper in a full sack cloth ghillie  suit floating around somewhere as I think he was too bulky to cast at the time.
Mark.

Finally another new battalion - Iv'e started work on the 1st Brigade, 1st Canadian Division.  All of the figures in the 1st Brigade are from Wargames Foundry.

1st (Western Ontario) Battalion.

Detail of the formation patch - green circle over the red patch of the 1st Division (the green represents the senior brigade in the division and the circle denotes the senior battalion within the Brigade).

Next up should be the 2nd (Eastern Ontario) Battalion. Should be done in the next day or two. I did some stock taking and realized I need to complete at least one battalion every week to get them done in time for the big Vimy game on the 100th anniversary in april.

Detail of the Third Battalion's formation patches - red patch of the first division surmounted by a green triangle.

Hopefully I should have the Fourth Battalion finished shortly to - which completes the brigade, and the Division (as I previously painted the 2nd and 3rd Brigades!)

Tim - I would love to see your terrain trenches.

They're still a work in progress. I started the 4th Division's terrain 10 years ago and have been fixing it up lately. This is it's current state:

The rest I'm going to build through the month of March.

to get an idea of how I'm doing stuff check out the blog post on the terrain I built for my REGINA TRENCH! game that I ran last fall at ToonCon:

I have been slacking off with updating this thread... I have finished a few more battalions since I last posted in November...

First are two battalions I painted to finish up the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade - miniatures are from 1st Corps

21st Battalion (Eastern Ontario), CEF

Next are three battalions that finished up the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade.

24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles), CEF - Miniatures from Gripping Beast/Woodbine Design

25th Battalion (Nova Scotia Rifles), CEF - Miniatures from Gripping Beast/Woodbine Design

26th Battalion (New Brunswick), CEF

I just received the last of the miniatures I need for the project (from Irregular Miniatures). Once I get them painted up I will have one brigade from every manufacturer of Great War British miniatures and I'll post some comparison pictures.

I've also been working on some Germans!

On to the last Brigade I will be painting for the project - the 6th Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division! All of the miniatures in the 6th Brigade are from Irregular miniatures.

The 27th Battalion (City of Winnipeg), CEF

Three more battalions to finish up then it's on to the terrain!

Now that I have painted examples of Great War British (or Canadian!) infantry from every manufacturer I should get around to posting some comparison shots....
Title: Re: Great War Canadians

I finished up a few more battalions over the last week (28th, 29th, and 31st Battalions)...

Sorry about the quality of the picture - I usually like to take pictures outside in natural light... but it got REALLY COLD this week!

This batch finishes off The Canadian Corps - or at least all the ones I'm planning to use for my Vimy game - just a few short weeks away!!

The Corps consisted of four divisions, each with three brigades of four battalions each. My battalions are made up of 15 figures. Each brigade also has a machine-gun company and a trench mortar battery in direct support.

Missing is the 10th Brigade - they were held in reserve to attack a strong point just north of the ridge the following day. I'll get to painting them up someday, but I am pressed for time at the moment, so I'm leaving them for the moment.

I also have a lot more guns to paint up (some day!), but as they're not needed on the table, I setting them aside for the moment as well.

On to the terrain!
