I am looking for your opinions on this ruleset? I play skirmish games mostly, and don't have much experience of big battle games, tried a bit of DBA but my opponent didn't like it (he's more used to warhammer fantasy and skirmish games like necromunda and frostgrave. Hope to find a game that can be finished in around 2 to 3 hours. This and Impetus look the most interesting..

Both are good options. You could try 'Basic Impetus' with your pal to see if he gets on better with that style of game - it's a free download and the army lists are online. However if the thing he didn't like about DBA was the 'elements' and no removal of figures then both Impetus and S&S are similar in that respect.

War and Conquest comes from the same stable as Warhammer etc. but is historical and very good, you can read battle reports and get a flavour on my blog below. I got Sword and Spear but gave up, I have seen it played at the club but it still doesn't look like my cup of tea.

Sword and Spear is an interesting set of rules especially in eras where individual units fight other individual units. For that reason I like it for ECW but not for Ancients. For Dark Ages here we use Dux but your best bet is Basic Impetus, an impressive free set (thus far) with elegant mechanisms to replicate attritional warfare. A second edition is due out soon.

Thanks for your thoughts, he doesn't mind the element part. I was going to buy impetus but with the second edition coming I though it best to wait. BI might be worth a try then ☺

Sword & Spear is a very good set of rules. The activation system gives you constant interesting tactical choices.
There's a lot of depth to it, but it plays fast. Personally I much prefer it to Impetus, which always feels a bit random.
