Escape From Fleetport : A "Fistful of Lead" AAR

We like "Fistful of Lead" as a go to ruleset for a quick weekday evening game. We also enjoy a bit of swashbuckling pirate action, too. So, we thought we would try combining the two ... and it worked reasonably well considering our minor amendments to the rule set. We are looking forward to the new "Horse and Musket" version, though, which is due out sometime in the future.

The Somnabulist had put together a bunch of scurvy dogs who were trying to get back to their sloop, whilst I had some upstanding citizen militia attempting to prevent the good-for-nothing's from escaping.

We each had six miniatures and there were four objectives for the Pirates to collect/ recuse before getting to the sloop. In addition to the Pirates and Militia, a few townsfolk were dotted about, who would help or hinder the two groups.

The scene is set and the adventure begins ...

The Pirates started in two groups - two musket men left on board ship and four crew members in the bottom right corner of the above board. The Militia started in the "Black Dog" public house.

The Pirates were quickly moving towards their first objective - an injured crew member - Steed Bonnett assists poor old Jeb, whilst Israel Hands moved forward to provide covering fire along the alleyway.

Whilst all the movement in the backyards was taking place, the Militia started firing at the crew left on the ship, As can be seen by the dice rolls, first blood went to the Militia, taking out one of the musket armed pirates.

Meanwhile, Israel and Miguel consolidate their position in the side alley and open fire on the Militia members opposite.

After a nasty little action between Edward Teach and Sir Thomas Waldron (ending in Waldron's death), Steed Bonnett slowly worked his way onto the quay side with old Jeb.

After the last turn (eight turns for this scenario) the Militia had lost three members, including their leader, Brandon Trye, whereas the Pirates had lost a musketeer and Edward Teach. Not being able to get the goods onto the sloop and being unable to arrest the Pirates we declared the game a draw.

A thoroughly enjoyable game, enhanced by an easily accessible rule set. Looking forward to playing again and also looking forward to the "Horse and Musket" rules coming out.

The miniatures are mostly from Foundry with a few Crusader miniatures and townsfolk from Redoubt. Most of the buildings are from TSS with a bit of EM4 farm complex added in for good measure. The boundary walls are scratch built with a few proprietary fences, goods and cart.

Arrghrr  Jim Lad , shiver me timbers !  Beautiful figures and terrain , I particularly like the dock side. Coincidentally I,m currently painting the Treasure Island figures from Foundry and I've spotted a few dotted about your board. It reads like a scene from the old Saturday matinee films which we used to love as kids. Look forward to more.

Interesting AAR and nice looking board. I think we need a second episode where the pirates come seeking revenge for Blackbeard's killing :)

Great little game and excellent terrain. I find the Fistful of Lead rules quick to learn and fun to use.
Is that a Minimi ship, I have one but have not rigged it yet.

Thanks Mateys,

It's great to get a midweek miniatures game in and the FFoL rules work well for this sort of adventure.

Guilty as charged ...

Great little game and excellent terrain. I find the Fistful of Lead rules quick to learn and fun to use.

The ship is indeed an old Minimi one, although it is currently in the process of being repaired having languished in my workshop for three years (along with the harbour board!).

There is a smattering of Treasure Island characters in the two crews; they are very useful.

I'm sure Teach will be avenged ... I last heard the sloop ("Teach's Regret") has sailed west for shores a new ...

Thank you, kind sir ... Naval crew might be needed soon so a good excuse to get them painted   :)

You might want to tweek the hand to hand combat - one of the militia managed to get taken out by a civilian with a lucky dice roll right at the begining of the game, which put the Militia at a disadvantage (or is that just an excuse for my poor dice rolls  lol).

Nice little town, and good story! :)

Glad you like it; more to follow ...

How is Ffol Pirates coming along? Black Scorpion has some nice fantasy pirate miniatures that would be fun to use with this too.

I missed this post the first time around.
Glad to see the second time.
Love the set up, fun story.
You can not go wrong with Foundry pirates.

That is a really nice looking board.  Is everything set in place or can you move any of the land mass about?  I'm guessing no because the quay and slope both descend into the same body of water.  I must study your pictures and others to get nice ideas.  I really like the small pieces like the canvas bales, jars and crates.  Thanks to looking at your photos I think I may have a way to make some good looking pieces for next to nothing but sparing no expense in the looks department; Thank you :) .

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Not too sure, Baron Von J (the author of the rules) would be able to give you an update.

You can not go wrong with Foundry pirates.

They produced a really good set of figures, which just keep giving ...

Is everything set in place or can you move any of the land mass about?

Yeap, the land mass is all one piece. All the buildings and walls can be removed. The board also is used as for the pirate's Caribbean adventures. I have a second board waiting to be used as a harbour extension ... sometime.

I really like the small pieces like the canvas bales, jars and crates.

Most of the bits and pieces are Ainsty Castings, the buildings are TSS and the walls are a mixture of Games Workshop and my own scratch built ones.

Glad this is still inspiring. Fistful of Lead is a really easy game to learn and works well for swashbuckling action. We will be playing some more adventures with the crews as they are starting to get some interesting character developments.

The expansion to Fistful of Lead: Horse and Musket (which Ramirez helped playtest) I'm calling Buccaneers & Cavaliers. It builds on FfoL:H&M by adding some more grit to the combat system and skills.
You’ll take on the role of a Captain, either leading a scurvy pirate crew, or troop of dashing soldiers of the Crown in search of adventure. Like all the Fistful of Lead games, you’ll only need 5 or 6 miniatures per player. You can play 1-on-1 games or larger skirmishes with up to 6 or 8 players.
You fill the ranks of your Troop with a Second, Regulars and Dregs.
Here’s sample Troop:
Captain Stinky Pete and the crew of the Saucy Mermaid:
Captain Pete (Captain)
First Mate Badbreath Billy Barnacle (Second)
Old Pete (Regular)
Pegleg Willy Splinter (Regular)
3 Nameless Shanghaied sailors (Dregs)
That gives our Troop 7 miniatures thanks to Dregs only taking up only one opening. Will numbers over quality prevail?

Here’s another sample Troop:
The King’s Loyal Musketeers
Francios Renault (Captain)
Armand (Regular)
Jacques (Regular)
Jean Baptiste (Regular)
Louis (Regular)
Bertold (Regular)
Francois has decided not to take a Second (maybe he’s not well liked) in order to get another Regular.
It you want to check out some action:
