Here comes the first of my late Romans (from the new Gripping Beast plastics). These are (part of) the legiones comitatenses Prima Flavia Constantia, originally recruited in Egypt and stationed along the Danube frontier.

Nice ones.
I don't know why but when I glanced at the first picture I thought to myself, why do they have such floppy spears o_o
-
They look great 8)
I really need to get on with mine..
Keep'em coming
Cheers

@Jericho: Thanks! Hehe.
@SP: Thank you! :)
-
These look realy nice, thanks for sharing
-
nice work on the minis! I also like the unusual legion choice!
-
@duc: Thank you!
@ayak: Thanks! The legion choice is mainly down to laziness, I wanted something easy to freehand on the shields. :D Speaking of which, the rest of them should be ready soon, all basecoats are down and I've started on the washing.
-
These look great. Very nice brush work! The faces on these sculpts have bothered me since they came out until I just now realized that I've only seen extreme close-ups in pictures and the faces probably pop very nicely on the gaming table. I imagine they are a pleasure to paint as well.
-
Thanks Richard! Yeah, the faces are not bad in a unit, especially if you vary skin tones. But I would have prefeered different faces, and not just clones.
These are the rest of my Prima Flavia Constantia legion. Mainly based on the new GB plastics, but with some arms, heads and bodies from the viking and saxon boxes, and two Warlord auxilia with converted helmets.

Here we have the Prima Italica legion. They seems to have worsened over the centuries, in the late Roman era they got stuck as border guards by the Danube, and are noted as a pseudocomitatenses in the Notitia Dignitatum. Their fairly dubious wikipedia article says they had a boar as a symbol, so I went with that for the standard. Being originally Italians, and presumably filled up with barbarians I gave these a lighter skin colour. I also mainly used unarmoured bodies for a "not quite as elite" look.

Really nice work Mrtn. You have been busy :)
-
Thanks mate! Yeah, got hit by an inspiration with these.
-
Very nice looking units, they really look the part. :)
-
Very nice work! ;)
-
Looking good - must admit I really like the idea of an army with known/named units. GB's figures may not be everyone's cup of tea but they are fine, have used the Dark Ages warriors as generic tribesmen in my Dacian horde. Yours show what is possible with some good painting and creative work. Now, if I was starting again.........
-
Thanks guys!
This is the Secunda Flavia Constantia Thebaeorum, sister legion to the first armoured guys I made, also raised in Egypt. These have a red circle around the shield boss, and I gave them red decorative patches as well.

The colour combination makes it a very striking unit.

Thanks Phil!
Here's a WIP of a Roman farm, so these guys have something to defend.

Looking good, I look forward to seeing it progress.
-
Thanks Phil.
These are the latest of the late Romans. Went for a red uniform on these guys for a change.

Thanks! The farm is finished, but I got dragged in to writing an article about it, so I'll brag about it let you know when it's in print. :)

Thanks guys!
This is the last unit in this phase of the army. They have the shields of the Germaniciani seniores, which is listed as a pseudocomitatenses unit in the Notitia Dignitatum, but I'll probably often run them as a limitanei levy unit. Most of them are based on the Dark Age Warriors plastic box.

I accidentally bought a small late Roman army the other week, and found that I wanted some draco standards for command models. They weren't included, so I had to build some. Thankfully I still have my old Warhammer bits, so here are three dracos built from a saurus, a skink and a skaven. Enjoy. ;)

Fantastic work! They really look good! Been working on a few myself and painting the shields as well but I really like the dirt and grime on yours. I've been debating whether to put some 'Deposited Dust' from Lifecolor on the shields but I am hesitant as the shields took so long to do and I'm afraid of messing them up :?
BTW, do you have a technique for painting wounds? I've got some casualty markers pieced with arrows and javelins that I'd like to put some blood around the wounds. What I don't want is red paint splotched on - I got some LOTR Rohan off of eBay with red paint splotched on the swords and it just looks awful to me.
On one guy, laying down with his hand over his face and an arrow in his eye, I experimented with Army Painter red ink over the flesh of the hand. I think it works but really isn't noticeable. That idea came from the Medicus model over at Warlord.
In any case, I have some light blue tunics with white strips that need some blood stains but I am not sure how to go about it without overdoing it.
I thought that you paint so well, you may have a technique or two.
Your army really is nice!

What rule set are you planning on using for this project?

Thanks for the nice words!
The dirt on my shields is just brown paint flicked on with my finger and a nylon brush. Easy. I haven't bothered with powders and solvents, I know where I am with ordinary acrylic paint.
Search for "tamiya clear red blood tutorial" and you should get plenty of hits for blood. I haven't used it myself but it looks spectacular. Don't overdo it though, assuming you're painting historical models and not Khorne berserkers.
What rule set are you planning on using for this project?
Mainly Hail Caesar, but I wouldn't be surprised if they get roped in for another rule set or three.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give that a try

Here's a few pics from my latest game. The Romans managed to save the villa from the rampaging Goths.

Great Looking armies, love the amassed forces!

Great looking figures!
May I ask what paint, colors you used for the yellow brown?
Really nice combination.
Cheers,

Finally got around to finishing the basing on these guys. The archers are a mix of old metal Gripping Beast and new plastic GB. The catapult crew is converted from various plastic sets, and the catapult itself is a conversion of a self cast orc catapult from an old Prince August mould.

Great stuff, the placcys seem to blend in well.
-
Very nice. Throwing some cloaked archers in there really adds flavor to these units.
-
Wow, these are fantastic, mrtn! Really, really nice!
-
Belated thanks guys. :)
Here's a unit of Syrian archers, 2/3 from Warlord and the rest from Black Tree Design. The green robes are very close to my WWI Germans, but a mix of blue and green instead of black and green washes. :)

Very nice. The two ranges fit together very well.

Super stuff, I have just started some Eastern saggitarii for my 3C Romans.
A & A rank and file with Aventine command.
-
They look great!
Pray tell, what did you use to get that eastern skintone? For my own attempts all failed...

Basecoat of VMC Khaki Grey, then highlighted with Flat Flesh and washed with AP Strong Tone ink. That Khaki grey gets it closer to the olive brown skin tone.

Love me some (more or less) Late Romans. :)
Quite an array, well done!
