Title: Spectre table update - Its the final countdown!
Post by: Treadheadz on May 20, 2016, 06:19:37 PM
Taking a break from the Jungle and going to town...

Start of my Spectre table - This will hopefully see lots of action and travel to different clubs and events in Denmark, to showcase the game and just have fun! Theme will be a sort of mashup of Middle Eastern/North Africa and Central America. Bought a heap of buildings from Knights Of Dice and SG2.
The base of the table is a 100x100 (cm) 6mm MDF, that is bevelled at the edges, so that it might be used on top of our existing gaming table.

The road itself is non-movable, but all other table features will be, for ease of travel and a degree of modularity. The idea being that I can always swap 2-3 buildings or terrain features and thereby change the overall "feel" of the board.

Still lots of work to be done, more gutter debris and of course, a slap of paint!

The "back edge" of the sidewalk is about 9mm and the plan is for the buildings to be placed on a sort of standard MDF slap, and then kitted out with urban debris, (trashbins, refuse bags, pallets, barrels and other crap).

Pictures - or it didn't happen!

Terrific work on the weathered roadwork.

Thank you.

The roads BTW are 2mm cork sheets that has been torn and then glued to a second 2mm sheet.

This creates IMO a cool and realistic asphalt look, that can be cut for things like drains and potholes. Once a bit more gutter debris is added, the roads will be painted almost black, then a few salt weathered stencils, then "dust" the whole thing with weathering powder to bind the road together and lastly, I will add some small grass tufts here and there.

I will try to take pictures during the process.

BRILLIANT! Your technique is innovative. Well done. Definitely storing that in the "how to" memory bank!

The look is very realistic. Reminds me of run-down American parking lots - just needs some weeds and a few shopping carts  lol

Aaaand Ker-splat!

...Or rather fssssh, some paint on the table at last!

Started of by base coating the table black, some of the cracks sort of opened, creating a cool effect.

The painting was done by masking of the various sections and then dusting the paint on - I could have used my airbrush for this, but...

1. It is a large plate.

2. The weather was too nice to lurk inside ;)

I think the end result is quite nice - Not sure what exact colour is used used on the pavement and road dusting... Can says "Grey" But its more of a Grey/Brown that sort of resembles Vallejo's "IDF Sinai Grey"  Luckily my local DIY store has bulks of it, since I will use these on the buildings too...

Main colours used:
Road - Black base with "grey" dusting.
Pavement - Black base, then "grey" coat.
Dirt - Black base, dark brown medium coat, then sand dusting.

Pictures!

Next on the list is getting some road stripes, more debris, some weathering powders and a little wash, and finally some tufts.

Oh and some metallic/rust on the manholes and drains...

Hopefully the last couple of buildings will arrive soon and the fun will really kick in!!

Enjoy!

Stripes and tufts!

Road is getting there - Did fuck up the masking a bit, but I'll blame on the underpaid town-authority ;)

Still needs a bit of weathering powder like the 40mm base shown for comparison - But more discreet, less is more and all that...

Lastly, I discovered that the manhole cover in the T-section is not center - It will drive my CDO nuts forever!! ;)

Goooood morning Viet…err…everyone!

I finally got some time to pre-assemble the buildings for my Spectre demo table – Special thanks and shout-out to Byron at SG2creations for his stellar service and really cool MDF terrain.

The SG2 buildings will be joined by some Tabula Rasa structures from Knights Of Dice and a few containers from UrbanMammoth. All are very cool and really easy to work with.

The idea is to have a few different standard setups using this lot – for demo games at clubs and events and then use some heavily converted buildings from Knights Of Dice, Multiverse, TTCombat and others for games at home in our gaming room – The later buildings will hopefully be more detailed and therefore, less travel strong!

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG24251_zpsp5sdzdui.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG24251_zpsp5sdzdui.jpg.html)

The overall layouts of the table is not completely set, as I still need to do a bit of Scenario tweaking, in that the different layouts will support the game mechanics that are in focus in the played scenario: Tactical/Stealth Movement, Direct Fire, Semi/Non-Permissive Environment etc.

The streets and alleys will eventually be filled with pallets, trash bins, refuse bags and other movable features that  will offer the player concealment and/or cover. This again to support the rules.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG24241_zpsobh47mnp.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG24241_zpsobh47mnp.jpg.html)

The theme I’m going for is a mash-up of the type of settlements you’d find in the suburbs of the Middle East/North Africa/Southern Balkans and Central America – And now heavily inspired by the upcoming game Ghost Recon: Wildlands!
Miles to go… miles to go…

Hi everyone.

I've recently bought quite a few building sets from Knights Of Dice.

Some of these are the "blanks" from the TABULA RASA range.

Now the idea behind these, is that the end-user can modify and add to suit individual taste and needs.

The kits are well made and easy to assemble - a bit on the small side scalewise - But workable!

One small bit, did bother me a great deal - the stairs - the steps are only about 3mm deep! basicaly making the stairs more of a ramp.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2462_zpskxxgisll.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2462_zpskxxgisll.jpg.html)

So, I set out to fix this in a "simple" manner...

First.

Sort out the steps or tiles and mark them, (in this case, I've marked them 1-16 and B for the bottom or base step).

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2463_zpsfdt2pgpg.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2463_zpsfdt2pgpg.jpg.html)

Second.

Change the tiles order as follows: 2, 1, 4, 3, 6, 5, 8, 7, 10, 9, 12, 11, 14, 13, 16, 15, B

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2476_zpsimb9sqs9.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2476_zpsimb9sqs9.jpg.html)

Third.

Starting with B and moving backwards, assemble the stair - Note the 3mm gap behind B.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2474_zpsbsa5z8of.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2474_zpsbsa5z8of.jpg.html)

The end result, should look like this...

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2477_zpsd0aznkxy.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2477_zpsd0aznkxy.jpg.html)

Giving you a more realistic looking and much more playable stair, by allowing the model base to rest between the steps.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2475_zpstxh1szau.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/IMAG2475_zpstxh1szau.jpg.html)

I hope this small tutorial will help you in getting the most, out of an already very cool set.

That is a great fix indeed! 8)

This should be stickied, as it will undoubtedly be useful for a great many fellow builders.

One thing I realized though; MDF buildings are heavy to begin with, but one of those stairs is just one solid block of material!  :o  It does help minimizing movement of the building during play I reckon though... ::)

Yes even the smaller buildings seems to gain considerable weight during the build. But like you stated, makes them more solid on the table ;)

That stairs idea is brilliant.  Also in the case of scratchbuilders who want to recreate it, I reckon you could achieve a much more lightweight equivalent by using EPVC instead of MDF.  :)

Quick update - with pictures!

Did a ton of groundwork on the table last night - mainly covering the bases with cork and sorting out gubbins for the walls (fuse boxes, A/C etc.) Also got a nice surprice from a mate, in the form of 1/48 scale brick wall sections from Tamiya - These have been used to "upgrade" the low walls on, one of the Tabula Rasa Compounds and given it a cool look - I will definitely get more of this kit, as it really adds character, and once a bit of texture paint hits the MDF, it will look really nice.

Time for some paint, or well sort of paint...

I've given the bases and walls a lick of texture paint - It came out a bit too thick at places, so I left a few open spots, that was later sprayed with a mix of "effect" sprays (terracotta and granite).

Next up is the initial black undercoat, mostly to make it easier for me to see what I'm doing, when its time for detailing.

...BTW here is a few random shots of the 'Safehouse' mods - I really love the Tamiya barricade set!

That is an amazing setup!

Please do stop by our (the non-GW gamers in DK) small annual gathering late November in Odense (http://www.horisontesbjerg.dk/) if you ever find the time.

Post by: Treadheadz on August 18, 2016, 11:40:03 AM
Yup, still alive, still building...

Sorry for the low-update, but got stuck in RL... and completely forgot to take pictures..

But

To remedy I'll be dropping a MOAB worth of pictures in this update ;)

Main progress has been halted waiting for some corrugated plastics and styrene rods - Got the overall layout down, but may change one of the buildings as its not really how I wanted it.

Also changed the containers - the new ones are a tad smaller, but looks better IMO. Also I've got a ton of refuse bags and barrels from Spectre incoming - plan is to make most of the scatter/debris into small/medium clusters, that can be moved and rearranged as needed.

And now; Standby for drop in 3... 2... 1...

Boom!

Ok a small explanation is in order about the LEGO...

The idea is to use blocks fitted with plasticard and tubes as chimneys. The large antennas will be fitted with satellite dishes and tv antennas.

Wires will also be fitted to the pylons to give that chaotic wiring effect - just need to be carefull about blocking the roof lids.

...Also they will serve as a easier means to lift the lids...

Just discovered this and I have to say it is really shaping up into something special.

That is a great idea for making the roads and the pimping of the MDF buildings is coming along really well indeed.

Title: Re: Its alive...ALIVE!! Spectre table update - OMG two updates in a week!!
Post by: Treadheadz on August 21, 2016, 03:55:00 PM
Yup, another update!

Got some work done on adding wires and roofs - Added antennas and satellite dishes and extended some of the LEGO chimneys and added tubes - The Chimneys have two, well three purposes:

1 - They provide a solid hnadle for removing the roofs to gain access inside.

2 - Create some roof clutter/detail.

3 - It just looks cool!

With 4 buildings about 95% done, I couldn't help giving them a splash of basepaint - I also use this to sort of get my bearing on any details I might have forgotten or left out.

Next up, is detaling on the last 5 buildings and then starting on the 10th, which is kinda new - The one Tabula Rasa didn't really suit me, so I've hacked and slashed two buildings from SG2, one of which will take its place...

..Or, inspired by Nimrod - I might just do a Gasstation and put in place...

Anyhoo, in no particular order; PICTURES!

Great stuff, the use of lego for detailing really works well, once its base coated they fit in with the buildings, and add a nice extra level of interest.

Thank you all!

Small update on the layout: I had some issues with one of the buildings - It didn't really fit - and I kinda, slightly, screwed it up, by laying on too heavy with the texture paint.

So...

I decided to swap it out for one of two, I still around from SG2.

I've only just cut the the MDF base, glued on the base structure and started on the cork layer as per the other sets.

The building itself allready has some texture paint on, but still needs some more, plus all the detailing... I will try to take some more pictures along the way, so you can follow the process ;)

Thank you.
For wires, I've begun to use 1mm soldering wire - soft enough to bend, yet strong enough not to break.

...So it continues...

Did more work on the new building - Added some walls (I love the Tamiya 1/35 Brick wall set) and some roofing detail.

Gave it all a light layer of texture paint and a spray of mixed effect paint. Then a quick black one to tie in the work.

Next up is more roof detail and wires.

Spectacular build! Really impressed with your attention to detail with the extra brickwork, and all the bits and bobs you've added on to make it your own. Looks fantastic.

Hey ho and away we ahem...

So, with the announcement of the upcoming Spectre Ops Rulebook (Yes, it's actually happening!) I thought I crack a day of the calendar and get a little closer to completion...

I've finished detailing the buildings 99% of the buildings - A few doors are still missing and I still need to sort out the street litter - but as it is, I can finally begin slinging paint around!

Random pictures in no particular order:

I'm based in Copenhagen.

Once you add the syreet 'litter' it will look phenomenal.

I can only agree.

It has begun!

Plan is as follows:

10 structures painted roughly as follows:

4 in shades of sand/light brown
3 in shades of grey (1 building with tile roof)
1 in white-ish
1 in white-ish with a lower part in red (building with tile roof)
1 in white-ish with a lower part in blue

Well that is initial plan...

What did you use for the pavements?

I used strips of foamboard (in this case 10mm) with the card stripped away and scored with a steel ruler.

Title: Re: Spectre table update - Update now with more greens!
Post by: Treadheadz on September 17, 2016, 12:32:17 PM
Well...its done!

Actually no, its not done, but the primary colours are all done - now for weathering and detail.

After that I'll be completing the bases - any overbrush or drybrush unto the buildings will simply add to weathering.

Also got a few loose pieces that needs to be done, but hey.. Its coming along nicely.

Added some palm trees and the plan is to mount them with magnets - Because magnets!

The palms and other greens will provide a good colour offset to all the dusty browns.

...And I finally settled on a name for the table "Quryat Al Shabah" - it simply translates to "Spectre/Ghost village" a bit corny, but has a ring to it I like.

Overall I still have a lot of loose end - But I do believe I can do it...

Right then - Still alive!

Ok so this will not be a regular update, as such - More of a "hey look what I discovered"

Modelmates Rust!

That stuff is THE shiznitz when weathering metals and adding rust to... whatever!!

Just paint it on and leave to dry - instant multi-layered rust patches - Awesome.

I've used it to paint the antennas, satellite dish, light posts and other stuff where I needed a "worn galvanised iron" look.

I airbrushed a layer of VA Dark Sea Grey, followed by a heavy stippling of Rust.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/MENA%20Update%20-%20City/20161023_173234_zpsn8otmfco.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/MENA%20Update%20-%20City/20161023_173234_zpsn8otmfco.jpg.html)
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/MENA%20Update%20-%20City/20161023_172156_zpsuadiyj0p.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/MENA%20Update%20-%20City/20161023_172156_zpsuadiyj0p.jpg.html)

Then I lightly airbrushed (almost a dusting) VA Light Grey on to that.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u491/Ivanwoller/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/MENA%20Update%20-%20City/20161023_184602_zpsmgxpjqq6.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/Ivanwoller/media/28mm%20Modern%20Warfare/Spectre%20DEMO/MENA%20Update%20-%20City/20161023_184602_zpsmgxpjqq6.jpg.html)

The Rust still shows, but is very mutted and gives a good worn look.

Still a few details to paint and posters, graffiti and litter to add, but the table is nearing 100%!

Crisis is only just around the corner and I promise to take and post lots of pictures of the finished table - If you're at Crisis, come find me and say hi!

I am new to this thread but I am very impressed with what I see. The road caught my eye as it looks amazing, and I really like you idea of having a modular lay out, but raised to the same level as the pavement as this avoids the obvious bases on buildings so typical of modular terrain.

when I read that you were going to use MDF buildings I was a bit disappointed as the road looked so good I was expecting some scratch built terrain of a similar high standards. It just shows that I shouldn't be so quick to judge. What you have done with the MDF terrain is awesome- the best 'conversion' of MDF buildings I have ever seen- a true master class on what you can do with these kits if you try. I love the lego bits, and all the dangerously exposed wiring.

I will be watching very closely from now on. a big well done from me.

Echoing the words of Rob_bresnen, and like I wrote earlier, very inspiring work on the table and scenery. You can consider many of your ideas stolen ;) Eg. I think I need to place an order for some Lego bits soon :D

By the way, how wide are your roads? They look like a perfect fit to my untrained eyes.

Happy gaming in Antwerp!

I've gawked at and peered over the many details and had a great chat with the Spectre people. They're very nice and enthusiastic about their product and were also in awe of the table itself, calling it a work of art.

So; praise from all sides, and rightfully so!  :)
