Title: opponenttheory's infinity and other scifi miniatures
Post by: opponenttheory on May 29, 2016, 10:34:21 PM
Hello everybody.

I thought I would share some of the infinity models I have painted. I don't paint sci-fi very often but the infinity models are rather nice and I have found that following the guides from Giraldez has helped improve my airbrush and general painting skills.

Brilliant brushwork...and for those unaware, these miniatures are slight!  I mean wee-tiny compared to many lines.  I'm with Jag - there is a whole other level I shall never achieve!

A wonderful job, indeed! How much of that work was done with the airbrush? The transitions are so smooth!

Not much is the airbrush as I'm still learning and don't have much accuracy. I'll do the main colour but I still need to use the brush to clean up and add contrast.

Here are some models in different stages of progress.

Where did you get Giraldez tutorials? Are they online somewhere or is there a book I need to buy?

Andy; there's a very nice book (http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Painting-Miniatures-Giraldez-Masterclass/dp/849427984X) available.

I have it too, and found it both beautiful and helpful. The amount of examples is limited, but the step by step painting guide for each mini is exhaustive. It's recommended, but it does come with a bit of a price tag...

Goodness me, those are very sharp!

I have to say that the red and black/purples seem to have sharper highlights and more contrast that the blues - at least it seems that way to me looking at the Fusiliers.

Either way, they are beautifully done, so thank you for sharing! :)

Where did you get Giraldez tutorials? Are they online somewhere or is there a book I need to buy?

If you go to Angel Giraldez's Facebook page, he actually has a huge number of step-by-steps for models of all factions to view and follow for free. Even if you not on FB like me, you can still view them.

These FB step-by-steps are more about the colours and what he used to place them (airbrush or paintbrush) rather than about technique, but if you are already reasonably experienced and can paint fairly neatly, then you should be able to follow his explanations with no issues. ;)

I've spent a lot of time thinking about how Giraldez paints and why he does certain things and I'd say he has one of the most effective painting styles around. Just from working through a couple of his tutorials has really helped me to improve. I still suck at using an airbrush but I've manged to work out how to get similar results with brush only which I've been using on my superhero models.

Anyway, from looking around at other people's stuff on here I rmembered I painting some imperial assault models not lon ago. I'm not a fan of star wars or the models (these were for a commission) but they came out okay.

I know from myself that a miniature I dont like never gets the best paintjob, I dont think it shows with yours though.

I took an airbrush class with Giraldez at Adepticon. He was fun and entertaining though and they provided a perfect airbrush/compressor station for every student.  I found his explanations and demonstrations very clear. Sadly however even with his hands on assistance I didn't quite manage to duplicate his layering.  Guess I will need to keep practicing.  lol

I am a reasonably good painter and have even won some regional painting awards in years past.

That said, there are many, many times when I look at some of the work posted on the forum and it makes me feel like I play tic tac toe and others here are chess masters as regards my painting skills in comparison.

Basecoated medium grey, glazes of dark grey for shading and a wet blend for the highlights using a light grey.

I could do with an airbrush lesson. I've been struggling with it for a few years now and whilst I've made some progress the I can't get results anything like what I see on youtube.

Made a start on my nomads. After a frustrating week with my airbrush I stuck with my brush for this guy. I also went a lot faster than I had done with the panoceania guys because I wanted him finished today rather than in three months. The end result is a little rough in places but I'm overall I'm happy with him.

Fantastic paint work all around. I really love this last one. The one that you say wasn't enjoyable to paint. He looks generic enough to fit into multiple settings. He'd be a great bounty hunter for Star Wars or Firefly. Might even work as a super villain.

The nomads with the smooth helmets are really nice models. I have some of the older versions and they've held up better than other nomad designs.

I finished off the bases going for a ruined factory theme.

I've been working on a quick painting method to get through my collection of bare plastic and metal and to offer those that don't want to pay for my still reasonably higher priced painting level.

The method still needs some refinement but I'm getting good results considering it's little more than a basecoat, several washes and a few highlights.

This is one of the better models I've painted this way.

I used a less refined version of a method by Jeremie Bonamant Teboul. I first basecoated all areas with medium to dark colours. Then I sprayed the model with white to lighten the upper surfaces. Then I used several glazes/washes of diluted army painter and gw washes to add colour. Finally I picked out a few highlights with an offwhite.

The Nomads are top, with beautiful bases.

VanZant is cool too, but the base is a bit "flat" in comparison of the Nomad ones...

Keep us showing some good painting, sir !

The nomads are from my own collection whereas RvZ was a quick gaming standard to sell on ebay hence the different basing styles.

I had a go at repainting an x-wing. I won't be doing any more as edge highlighting all of those little panels was no fun and the end result wasn't worth the time spent.

I've had some time whilst I wait for some commissions to arrive so I've had a go at painting space marines. Turned out okay this time especially the nmm but I still struggle with judging the contrast on highlights when using the airbrush.

It's either pure red - warpaints or khador red base - p3. They're not too different in colour. The p3 paint is better covering but I prefer the warpaints for glazing and transitions.

Brilliant! :-* I think I've said it before, but the statement still stands......your simple 'I'm just not making that much of an effort to paint', is the same as most people's 'I'm trying my f@#king hardest!' paint job!.........and I include myself in that bracket!

Can I ask? How long do you averagely spend painting a miniature like that?

2-3 hours. The basecoat is normally the longest part which is why I'm working on ways to reduce the need for fully opaque, neatly applied first colours. The rest goes by quickly. I use a limited palette, 3-4 army painter washes and a couple of highlight colours, and almost no mixing or blending. This way I can work on the entire model developing the shading and light simultaneously.

I found a little time over the holiday period to work on my own stuff and manged to finish two Astropolis dudes. I used a more relaxed painting style than usual because it's good to take a break sometime from being all precise and I think the style suits the character of these lovely little models.

I used pine bark mulch and some dried earth from the garden. Painted with pigments and washes.

Looks like I'll be doing a lot more infinity this year. First up are some yu jing I won in a painting competition.

Just been right through this thread, fantastic painting. I've got the infinity rules but I'm going to use other miniatures for the game. I looked at some of the figures and had that 'Rackham feeling'. I would buy them (as I did with Rackham stuff) get them home, stick them together, slap on some paint and go 'Fuck that!' I'll never get them to look anywhere near as good as the official painted figures or painters like you.
Great job, I'll stick to my copplestone and Urban war stuff, a blind monkey can get a passable paint job on them

I can never figure out if threads like this inspire me to try improve my own painting.....or just burn my brushes and give up. After 30 years of painting my stuff is still barely passable (at 30 metres in the right light)....sigh

I've been painting for 15 years and most of my improvement has come in the past 12 months. Not sure what's made the difference if it can even be narrowed down to one thing.

Plus these are a for a commission so I have to be somewhat conservative and make the best use of my skills within the time allocated.

They are superb and every bit as good if not better than mine (with or without camo)! I know how fiddly Infinity are to build and the tidy modelling and consistent quality of painting is both exemplary and inspiring.

Thanks. You have more flair for these things whereas hard scifi is something I used to run a mile away from. Thankfully Senor Giraldez wrote a book on how to paint most of these models.

I suppose it's just an in-built thing; some people have the ability- I know I would never achieve these quality standards.

Must be like when people talk to Messi about playing football and he says 'it's easy just kick the ball like this...'

Steders has it right I think, although I want to get back into Infinity and will have a try again. But no way I'm showing my results on here, I do have some pride left.

Jaw-droppingly good. I love Infinity miniatures, and almost bought some once, but when I saw them in my hand I realized how delicate they are, which makes painting like this all the more amazing, as far as I'm concerned. Beautiful shading, the handling of the blacks is perfect, and the basing is perfectly subdued. Top-notch.

I'm not a natural painter. Up until quite recently as I was above average despite many years of practice. It wasn't until I decided to properly understand miniature painting and developed a vaguely scientific theory about the effect of different techniques that I had my breakthrough.

It's called free market discipline :(

Fantastic painting as always. I'm impressed how you manage to make colours pop. Your minis are nearly too vibrant to my taste, but technically, they are flawless.

I bought some new paints today and when I was reorganizing my collection I noticed how I have all of these drab looking greens and browns from when I used to paint only lotr models that I rarely use anymore. Clearly, painting several hundred comic book characters has had an influence. But, also, as my own theory of miniature painting goes, I'm definitely favouring more intense colours to give the models more visual punch.
