Title: needed: 28mm foot French Sipahi officer figure
Post by: chicklewis on January 14, 2009, 06:21:35 PM
Good morning, clever and well-informed adventurers in lead.

I have recently finished my double tSatF unit of 24 28mm mounted French Sipahis, and really like the way they look. Half of them are Castaway Arts and half are long-out-of production HLBS castings. I've also finished 17 of the excellent Askari Miniatures foot Sipahis to represent the same unit (minus horseholders) when they are dismounted.

However, my lovely HLBS mounted French officer casting has no foot version, and I haven't been able to identify an appropriate casting to use for him, or to headswap to represent him. (The Askari command figures are great for NCOs, etc, but are in Sipahi uniform, therefore not appropriate for the French-born officer.)

I realize I could take my hoarded store of winebottle thin lead and try to add a cape to a french officer, but I know in my heart I'll never get the draping and flowing effect a good scupltor can provide.

So – I need to find a figure in european-style officer's togs which is wearing boots and a very large, voluminous, flowing cloak. Suggestions, please?

Thanks in advance if you can give me a pointer !

Bimbashi Lewis,
And here I was going to suggest that you post something up on LAF, and you obviously beat me to it.
So I just had a look at one of the surplus Spahis you traded me years ago, and if the dismounted version are anything like the mounted version, how about this.
1.) Remove the head, and replace with officer's kepi
2.) Replace the hand with rifle with a hand with sword, perhaps one of those Perry Brothers plastic ACW officer arms
3.) The enlisted man's calves and boots aren't quite puttees, but the trousers seem to blouse out just under the knee, and then are quite tight around the calves.  Maybe putty the legs and create boots.  That's really easier than it sounds.  The easiest Federale conversion is to take Copplestone Back of Beyond Chinese, cover over their puttees and turn them into boots.
4.) Or maybe somebody just makes the figure out there, so
5.) So, not really any actual help.
