Title: Donnybrook action in the Low Countries
Post by: whiskey priest on June 06, 2016, 05:51:38 PM
I finally managed to get my first game of Donnybrook over the weekend. I used my Dutch revolt figures and played a fairly simple scenario. We had a great game and I fully intend to name every Character and make cards and things for the units. I want to get some cavalry painted for both sides and get another game in with a more varied board as soon as poss.

Smashing looking set up and game! How are the rules you used?

Rules are Donnybrook and they give a fast and flavoursome game. I'll tweak them a little bit for the next game but I go into them in depth on the blog.

Lovely looking set up you've got there. How did you find Donnybrook?

I really liked it. It's simple enough to allow the scenario to take the lead while being flexible enough to allow you to taylor it to your own needs. It certainly encourages a more character fi style of play. Each of your Hero's and Characters deserve to have a bit more individuality about them to encourage that role playing element. I'm looking forward to my next game.

Very nice pics - Donnybrook rules look very good, I've read them but haven't played them yet  :)

Interesting game and great looking figures. I recently picked up the Osprey En Garde rules set. I've sadly not managed to get it out in anger yet due to being too busy with 'normal' life. But the rules you used sound very similar. Do you know of the other and have you got a preference?

Donnybrook is a great game for a bunch of folk running around shooting at each other and knocking lumps out of each other. The lack of stats and the use of the ability dice means that most stuff is dealt with really quickly and there i son need to look up stuff in the book or on charts. En Garde on the other hand is for maybe half a dozen figures per side with the focus on the individual rather than the group. Combat is far more complex and requires a bit of head maths and chart checking. It depends what kind of game you like. I was looking for something a bit more robust and knock about with scope for messing with which is why I plumped for Donnybrook. I have tried 7TV as well and will probably try Pikeman's Lament when that comes out as well.

Terrific table setup. I have had a lot of fun with En Garde but still haven't tried out Donnybrook. I must get me a game some time soon....

Love it, great looking game. What lists did you use?

I didn't really use any of the lists out of the books and just treated both sides as army factions. I counted the Dutch as drilled and the Spanish as Elite although I could have split the Dutch between recruit and Drilled (if i'd had enough figures!). However as I play more games I'll look for different kinds of characters to include in the forces as this will give me the option to include the characters from the Gothique games http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=72329.0
I had a quick chat on my Blog with Clarence H and he reckons Fantasy elements will work fine. I also want to try out some Caribbean shenanigans with same figures, I've got some of the Foundry renegades on the way in order to do so.
First thing first is get some cavalry done for both sides which I'm on my way to doing. First up, Reiters for the dutch.

I picked up the rules for use with my portuguese in brazil gaming in mind but havent gotten around to trying them out. I think the lists are flexible to mix and match very well and the supernatural element should tie in nicely for you

Been considering getting the rules, but I am more interested in 16th century and early 17th than the late 17th, where Donnybrook seems to start up.  My main concern is the greater frequency of armor (and somewhat heavier armor - some of it even proofed against pistol fire) in the 16th century than in the 1670's.  Does Donnybrook allow for that ?

Not specifically, but easy enough to do. There is a 5+ save for troops wearing cuirass. Just give troops an armour save for the protection worn. Something  along the lines of 3+ for fully armoured, 4+ for armoured and 5+ for protected, or whatver you feel works. If you want to represent pistol proof armour just give them a 2+ save against pistols.

One of Donnybrook's  strengths is that it is very tweakable to suit personal preferences.

In addition to what theoldschool mentioned, characters also get to roll on an injury table rather than simply die. A +1 to that roll might simulate the armour quite effectively. And remember that you're rolling your save on the ability dice of your model not just a boring old d6 so if you are talking about fully armoured figures, they are bound to be elites rolling on d10's and your hero will be rolling in a d12 which both make a 5+ save look a lot more appealing.
