__________
I'm planning on setting myself up for another 'Army Painter' challenge this year. I skipped last year as I was just plain burnt out, and my painting output suffered for it!
Here's an old thread on the idea:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=55393.0
I'd propose that the gist of 'Army Painters' stays the same- it is not a competition, no records are kept, we paint a 'unit' of roughly 5-30 figures each month, and post them on or around the first day for sixth months, August 2016 to January 2017. Each person maintains their own thread and labels it starting with '(Army Painters 2016)' so that we can find each other's project.
I'm going for Darkest Africa Azande and maybe some DA Pygmies if I can squeeze them in.
Who else is interested?
-
I would be, but my painting output is terrible atm (less than 1 mini/week - and I think I suffer too heavily from 'butterfly syndrome' to keep working on a limited choice of models, to be honest).
-
Well then, since my goals for the rest of this year are 2 painted GoT Lion Rampant armies, I guess I am in!
-
I will be in. I do not know with what. I have not painted anything for a long time really.
I wont be able to really paint figures before september though.
-
I'm in again although I fizzled out last time lol
Won't have anything till I get back from my hols next month.
cheers
James

That's my problem too - but I'll try.
I still have to choose my force, something with a quick-to-apply scheme.
My Iyanden Eldar would have been ideal but for one minor detail - I only have 4 models.....!
-
I might be in. But I do not know with what.
-
Having just finished my 2015 Army, I don't think there is enough of 2016 left for me to start another one.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=90203.msg1118225#msg1118225
Though I do have that Sudan force looking at me on the shelf...
-
I'm afraid I'm too much of a butterfly to concentrate on an entire army in one sitting...
-
I can always use another goad to productivity, I've a bunch of WWII/SotTR stuff to do & this will suit nicely.
-
I'm in. :) I need some sort of accountability to force me to paint at this point. lol I've been on a roll doing more of the pre-painting stuff lately (basing, assembly, condensing the sprues and sprues and sprues of plastic figures into fewer containers, reorganizing storage, etc...) and plan on getting an airbrush, so an August start date gives me time to line this stuff up.
One question though - does it have to be only one Army? The bulk of the painting will likely be for Lion Rampant/To The Strongest! for Game of Thrones, but I'll also have This Is Not A Test and Frostgrave warbands/wandering monsters to paint up. Just "unitize" these skirmish figures into groups to keep with the theme?
-
I'm interested; not sure about which army maybe Zulu's or ECW Parlementarian.

I'd hate to start imposing 'rules', so feel free to work on multiple projects ;)
-
I may be up for this once I get my BLAM game out of the way. I have some vikings that I want to paint
-

A man after my own heart! lol :D
-
Will possibly join, yet can only remember the shame of one of my previous entries to paint a rebel scifi army! Not sure what I will be painting but will probably involve Zulu/ Matabele/ Boer or British. As I'm just reading Marching to the Drums from Pen and Sword Books which compiles accounts of victorian soldiers during the colonial wars of the British Empire. Again butterfly'ing ... just been assembling some plastic zulus ...
-
I'd hate to start imposing 'rules', so feel free to work on multiple projects ;)
When's the start then?
I've got half a dozen armies waiting and I want to have to decide which, else I'll spend my painting time digging up more and more stuff and trying test paint jobs.
I'm self-imposing a few rules:
(1) has to be a simple paint job and a fast one, as I don't have that much time for painting :'(
(2) has to be one of my bigger forces-in-storage (to help whittle away the mountain).
(3) has to have no irritating or very lenghty jobs (so probably no models with tonnes of flash, or tightly packed bases which are hell to paint or flock; and no models which need hugea amounts of finicky assembly.
(2) will imply that it's one of my GW forces, almost certainly an oldy. In the running at the moment are:
(a) Orks (a somewhat particular force which would include around 50 identical models - now THAT's a challenge! - and a slight twist in the tail)
(b) Epic (6mm) Orks - all vehicles
(c) Epic (6mm) Chaos - with a cunning plan to get away from fiddly basing problems
(d) Epic (6mm) Tyranids as per (c)
(e) Imperial forces hotch-potch (a mix of Pretorian Guard, Kasrkin, SoBs, SMs, Ad Mech - contrary to (a), maximises the mix of models to keep it interesting)
(f) Dwarfs, mercenaries and friends (a bit like (e) in concept)
(g) something else I'll come up with one week after the start.
-
I'd love to but could my output could never attain 1 unit per month.
-
Having just painted a 700 strong 28mm ECW Army in four months I am not picking up a paintbrush for a few months...good luck to all those taking part.
-
Hmmm, haw (drumming of fingers on table sounds), should I, or shouldn't I, well, of course, I should, but will I - and what of sharing my mediocre paint jobs among the legions of artists here about? Oh, decisions, decisions. Well, okay, but only just maybe. And what of the size of my smaller figures against those steroidially challenged figures? Oh, the angst, the angst. :?
-
When's the start then?
Start anytime- the goal is to shoot for posting pics around the first of the month- with August 1st being the initial target date.
Low pressure people, low pressure ;)
-
I have five painted regiments completed as of now, that I have never got around to photoing and posting.
-
Something I've been thinking about for a while

Right. I found a suitable twisted (and easy to paint) force, better get to work.

That's a grand force, quite envious (and slightly off-topic, how did you manage to get that pixellated camo? :o 8) 8) )
-
how did you manage to get that pixellated camo?
Undercoated white and starting with the lightest colour painted it on with a brush.
-

With a brush! That IS good - I'd been thinking of stencils, my hand is nowhere near as steady. 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
With a brush!
Yes, never again!
-
Starting August 1st - does that mean we start painting August 1st or that first post with photos is August 1st? Just want to have my deadlines lined up :)
-
Presenting your first painted unit on the first :)
cheers
James
-
Well since I'm guilty of instigating this thing back then I should jump in too. I am in the process of digging through my 15mm fantasy lead pile & have 3 units of orcs primed & ready to paint on the table. Count me in.
-
Count me in.
Good man. I for one thank you for instigating it!
-
Great idea, i,m in
I will paint a sasquatch army and i will try to paint more projects
-
OK, I'm in, again! ::)
I plan on finishing my two Achaean Lion Rampant armies, Trojans and Achaeans, and using a unit from each as the start of a third, the Luwian Alliance/ Sea Peoples army.
This being today's plan, as I've also got those Orlanthi to start, a Pan Tang Frostgrave warband to do, and my Temple of Set gang is headed my way...

yay! More trojans.
I plan on painting up a detachment of Myrmidons if Redoubt ever sends me my order that is.
-
I just lost a huge auction on eBay for 100+ Redoubt Trojans. :'(
They worked out to abt $1 each, and I'm just too cheap... Not that I don't have a shit-ton of them already anyways, but you know the feeling! ;)
-
Can I make a small suggestion that the thread titles start with (AP 2016) to identify them. Also, the short version could help if participants want a bit more description in the aforementioned title :)
cheers
James
-
I'm in as well. I have two armies I want to have ready for a Seven Years War game at Colonial Barracks in November.
-
It might be foolhardy on my part, given my lack of painting in recent years, but count me in. :D
Back of Beyond - Chinese Warlord Army: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=91364.0
-
Not sure yet but i may enter. I need motivation to paint and i have a lot of ideas but nothing decided yet.
Maybe napoleonics or ACW (Paul, if you see this dont laugh). ::)
-
With Sharp Practice out I've renewed my interest in my lead pile. I'm thinking ACW starting with the Rebs. This could be a useful way to get things moving.
-
Ok. Count me in.
I will paint celtiberians.
-
I need some peer-group pressuure to help me start my 15mm Napoleinic French Imperial Guard from 1813 - so count me in.
-
I've got a ruck of Australian and Japanese troops coming to me from the Wartime miniatures kickstarter sometime in the next month or two. Providing they come in time I'll try and do this, about time I became more active on this forum :)
-
I have too many projects to choose from!
I want to paint Halflings, Undead, Azande, Russian Partisans, British Zulu War... the list goes on!
I wonder if there is a bias in the order I listed them in just now. ;D
-
Halflings it is then ;D
Half as much to paint as normal figures so your output should be twice of everybody else ;)
cheers
James

What output? Are you saying I've put out?
Frankly.... I dare not go through my painting log of 2016 anymore. I've stalled! lol
-
lol
Perfect opportunity to get back into it then :D
cheers
James
-
So any rules on when we must decide on our topic? Frankly I have a few things to choose from...don't we all? lol
-
I think it's a good moment to join this for the first time. I will do with biblical stuff for Chariot Rampant rules.
Be kind with the rookie, please. :D

By being a rookie, it gives you a chance to be one of the few that hasn't failed! ( I failed twice already!😉) So good luck!
-
I too have an army that needs painting and this would be the perfect opportunity to get it done.
But I'm such a slow Painter and someone is already doing Warlord Chinese... :)
When do we have to say we're "in" by?

I'm also a pretty slow painter and there is nothing to say we have to pick different armies to paint. On the contrary, we might inspire each other. I think as long as you post the first unit/group painted by around the 1st August (2016... ;) ) its fine.
Good luck to everyone that has (and will) commit to taking part. 8)

Anyone can paint anything that they have to paint. The only real rule is that you paint one tactical unit a month or more if you can. After the painting period
Say 4 or 5 months, then a round of equipment for your army. Elephants, machine guns, artillery, siege equipment, tanks, wagons, etc. Then the final round would be the army as a whole.
Just a group of folks that want to keep up on their painting without the competition of say the LPL. Personally although I did participate in one, I am more of an army painter. I can really enjoy seeing all the fine detail of the painting in the LPL, I find it a little overwhelming for me. I like painting larger group to look good on the table from about 3' away. Like the average wargames unit. This is more of a support group for those of us not really up to that level. Although some of the LPL painters have jumped in on this too, and are just as welcome. Hopefully this helped clear things up a little. More of a painting support group than competition. ;)
-
Well, this looks like something I should get into. The problem? What army? Hmmm... I did just get Overkill. Genestealer Cult it is.
-
No tactical units for me. I am going to use some time this summer to get more familiar with my airbrushes especially my new sotar. After a warmup on some terrain (to clear the table) I will paint the Wargames Zombie horde I picked up a few years ago at gencon. They are the perfect figures to work on my control with paint and inks as who expects neat Zombies?
-
Alrighty Overlord! You've convinced me. :D
My progress will probably be slow August and September but should pick up afterwards. I'm planning on brown uniforms...what about you?
-
Tempted but failed utterly last time, but one unit a month is doable methinks
Behold the Viddessos Legion, one unit painted and one part painted😜 from a phase of fantasy 2 years ago orcs dwarves and centaurs

Count me in. I will be painting Roman Republican and Spanish troops for the Punic Wars campaign we are currently running. Hope to have the first troops off the painting board very soon.
-
Good Luck folks...why do these things always start after I have started my Army??
I started my 400+ Zulus in the middle of June and have completed nearly 270 - I suppose that rules me out....

First post is due around the 1st of July or near it, no reason whatsoever you couldn't join in. Of all the various LAF clubs and contests this one is the most laid back ;)
-
I thought 1st of August...otherwise I'm REALLY behind lol

Same :o. Perhaps first post is just an introduction and picture of the pile to be reduced (in which case I got that covered.) :D
-
If I wasn't neck deep in an Eldar army I'd jump in on this.
-

Correct - the July post is the intro, the August one the first batch - er - I think ???
Oh well, it IS laid back, so doesn't really matter :D
-
I'm aiming for finished figures on 1st Aug.
And I'll do it as well (just the basing left to do) :D
cheers
James
-
Whoops!!!
August 1st is the first painted entry.
Please forgive me :)

That should take care of whatever free time you have left after shed building.
-
Now that's a horde!
-
Ok I'm in. I will be painting Estonian heathens for a Baltic crusades game.
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t75/Fredejensen/DB8A59BD-D1D2-4089-964B-5645756C065A_zpslivxcybu.jpg) (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/Fredejensen/media/DB8A59BD-D1D2-4089-964B-5645756C065A_zpslivxcybu.jpg.html)

Add another 120 to that !
I'll set up a separate thread soon..

Ooh very interesting, what figs are you using to represent them? ???
-
Ooh very interesting, what figs are you using to represent them? ???
These ones are a mix of black tree crusaders. But eventually I think I'll be adding some fireforge Russians as well. I am not really sure how Baltic pagans looked like. But I figure that they looked more or less like everyone else. So a healthy mix of crusaders, Russians and perhaps some Normans will give the army a fine look that is a bit different from a "normal" European army.
-
You have sucked me in, off to post my starting thread right now
-
You have sucked me in, off to post my starting thread right now
Ha hah! :D
-
Rather than break the rules of additional threads I started my Zulu Army thread on the colonial board so will leave it there - part 4 has been added
-
May be in on this. Not sure I have enough units for a single army, but I'll dig something out.
I tend to paint a unit from one army, then do a different army, then something different again, only coming back to the first one after doing 4 or 5 other things. It stops painting the same colour scheme over and over from becoming tedious.
-
My first unit finished and posted - and only 4 days late. I promise to make it up with the second unit and post ahead of the deadline so I can go on holiday with a clear conscience.
-
Believe it or not I actually have started this. I'm going to keep at it too!
-
I have bought the miniatures and some shield transfers but npt started building or painting yet :'(
-
Think I will have a go at this as it should give me some motivation to get things done. I shall paint the Harad army for my long term siege of minas tirith project
-
I have finished my army for the contest, whre i can put the pics??
-
I have finished my army for the contest, whre i can put the pics??
It's not really a 'contest' as much as a challenge (there's no prizes or even hard deadlines).
Participants are just making a thread and titling it starting with (AP 2016).
-
It's not really a 'contest' as much as a challenge (there's no prizes or even hard deadlines).
And thank god for that lol
My Men of Gondor are still mounted up, waiting patiently for me to finish them (which I will do before Christmas at least).
cheers
James

Painted my first unit
cheating a bit as I am painting figures for Blood eagle so single figures will count as a unit

Wouldn't a unit be the entire warband? ;)
Here's my 200 points warband, btw (I know, I didn't sign up, but anyways):

-
Now you are just being picky ;)
At the speed I paint I will stick with the single figures being a unit :D
-
Shame I missed this portion of the forum. I painted an entire friggin' Eldar army this year. lol
-
I meant to paint one army, painted another 2, and didn't think to label either "AP 2016". Oh well...
