I've got a complete Dragon Rampant undead army sat in a drawer unpainted so i decided to start working on them. They are nearly all Mantic apart from a few Character models.
First up is a Vampire Lord ( GW undead and Dark Elf mash-up)

The colour is a little out as my camera seems to make purples look like blues.
Hope you like him.

Looks great! Nice use of the bits for a cohesive result.

Lovely :-* :-*

Great painting and I love the color choices. Epic! :)
-
Very nice indeed.
-
The figure is gw, but the horse is mantic, right? I really like their undead, definitely their best figures!
-
Thanks gents. Really enjoyed painting this.

I totally agree about Mantic's undead, they produce my favourite skeleton infantry, zombies and ghouls. I'm not overly keen on their cavalry which is why I used GW for any mounted minis. This particular model is all GW ( except the head).

Very impressive!

Great stuff!
Well done.

Love it.
-
Great degraded effect, all the rusty, tarnished metal and the dulled heraldry. Looks good. :)
-
Very nicely painted - with a colour and style that really suits the figure !
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Nice to see a vamp that is not all red, black and gold. Really works mate!
-
Nice paintjob!
I will soonish (I hope.......) begin my own Dragon Rampant Undead force using vintage Citadel models from the 3rd Edition Warhammer era.
May I ask what your Retinue composes of? Always interested in what people field :-)
Cheers
-
FANTASTIC! The BEAUTIFULLY converted Prince of Darkness is an OUTSTANDINGLY painted & based creation...the LOVELY base contrasts SPLENDIDLY with the evil nature of the miniature. VERY WELL DONE indeed!
-

I agree. We really can imagine that it's some kind of local fallen lord, who became a creature of the night, instead of the usual "hollywood" larger than life monster.
-
He's a nasty looking bugger! :)
Great brushwork ;D
-
Thank you all for the comments.
I'm trying to put together an undead army which looks like a "real" force (real people who have been re-animated ) with coats of arms etc. With that in mind the rest of the army will follow similar lines to the vampire.

Because the Leaders can be fielded as reduced model counts or single minis I have been looking at 32pt Armies to make the most of the minis I've got.
I have been looking at making up several versions of the army so that I can swap units in and out within that 32Pt limit.
Example:
Wight King Army:
X1 Wight King (Heavy Foot Single Model)+ Undead + Mystical Armour + Venomous 9Pts
X6 Mounted Fell Knights ( Elite Cavalry) + Undead 6pts
X6 Fell Knights (Heavy Foot Reduced Model Count) + Undead 4pts
X12 Skeletal Infantry (light Foot) +Undead 3Pts
X12 Skeletal Infantry (light Foot) +Undead 3Pts
X12 Ghouls ( Belicose Foot) + Hatred 5pts
X6 Skeletal Hunters (scouts) + Undead 2pts
Total=32pts
The Wight King in the above example is a real close combat beast!
I love how flexible the rules are for building units and I am having a lot of fun fiddling with the special abilities etc.

Look forward to seeing the army in all its glory

Stunning looking miniature! :-*

Next up is a GW Wight King with a custom base. Really enjoyed painting this one , although I'm not overly pleased with the eyes.

The eyes look a bit unfocused, mad and you know... dead. Great work as always man!

Thanks mate. I was trying to go for a glowing effect to the eyes but it looks a little too messy ( better in the flesh but not too good by camera). I'm pretty pleased with the glowing ghosts but I will probably repaint the face and just give him empty eye sockets.

I like him. Especially the base and how it all fits together. Shame about the eyes, hollow sockets will work, but might not look as menacing. :)
-
very dead indeed :-* :-* :-*
-
That's fantastic! Love the basing and the ghost.
-
Good paint, with advanced lighting effects ! Wich is something I always try to avoid myself lol
-
It seems like GW's undead range is the one hiding all their nice recent figures that I've never seen. lol :D Nice work!
-
Just completed some Undead knights to add some hitting power to my army. They are GW Black Knights with some Mantic and Fireforge bits.

Fantastic undead cavalry! :-*
-
This right here is why I got into wargaming. The creativity, immersion, and personalisation. :D Really well done.
-
Brilliant colour scheme and painting on the Knights. Very well played. :D
-
The undead cavalry are marvelous...particularly because they're not overladen with skulls and other ridiculous motifs. They look like they recently arose from the battlefield. Excellent.
-
The undead cavalry is quite dark looking and I especially love the rust effects!
-
Beautiful! I like the old and weathered heraldic barding instead of the usual black cloth for the knights!
Very good old and rusted armour also, I wouldn't mind some explanation of how you achieved those effects (I recently bought some of those black knights, first GW purchase in a long time and pleasantly surprised, good models).

ace :-* :-* :-*

Thank you all for the comments. I am really enjoying doing these.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was aiming at.

I base coated all the armoured areas in "Burnt Umber" ( Vallejo) instead of my usual black. I Then used watered down GW Dark Flesh to give it a slightly reddish hue. I then added patches of Brilliant Orange for rust spots. Once it was all dry I went over it with Army Painter Strong Tone Wash (or Devlan Mud if you've got it). When this was dry I applied small scrapes and scratches to raised areas with Shining Silver. If I over-did the silver anywhere I dry-brushed a small amount of Brilliant Orange and added some Orange rust spots.
Hope that helps.
I've just varnished some skeleton infantry which I will post shortly.

Thanks! Interesting approach, applying the metal afterwards over an orange/reddish undercoat. Wouldn't have guessed that...I'm going to try and copy/steal ;) your method!
You mean the strong tone from the big can or the ink? I recently bought one of those cans so that will be a happy coincidence.
-
Each time this marvellous topic comes up I feel like I should start considering that book again. I have a small but loved collection of wood elves that might actually see play against my friends equally small but loved collection of dwarves.
-
Loving the 'distressed' paint job and rust effects and the incongrous jolly flowers poised to be trampled underfoot by the hooves of the undead horde.... :D :-*
-
Great looking figures. My only comment is that I would have made the flowers look dead...just so add to the deathly look of your retinue.

I kind of like the look of them. It both re-enforces the fact these dead things aren't supposed to be here, and it also reminds of the flowers people leave on graves.
-
Loving these. Those grubby yellows are superb!
-
The Deadites, both on foot & mounted, are GLORIOUS creations, BEAUTIFULLY painted & based. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks gents.

I have both, but on these I used the strong tone ink ( I used it on these only because it dries so quickly)
With regards to the flowers, YPU hit the nail on the head. I used bright living flowers to contrast with the dead knights. It also adds a splash of colour to a dark subject.

Those look lovely. But what a price. And they come in fives.
-
Thank you. I agree the Black Knights are expensive but i picked them up on Ebay for a reasonable price.
Next up some Mantic Skeletons to act as "Light Foot"

The banner is a scrap piece of card which my dog had chewed! Weird what I make use of sometimes.........

I have re-painted my Wight King's face as I didn't like the glow effect

very nice indeed and the face looks much better

Another extremely well executed project underways!
Always a joy to watch your efforts unfold! 8)

Really like those skeletons.
-
again, really good light FX on the banner :o

Just completed some more minis for my Undead Army.
These are my Foot Knights which I will probably field as a reduced unit of Heavy Foot.

Superb units and painting! :o

Every new picture is an enjoyement ! You master special effects really well, like lights, rust, etc...
Well done ;)
-
Growing better and better! Keep going! :)

Brilliant painting - lovely colours and the rust/weathering is great - just one thing...
Is it just me or are there too many flowers? Individually they look fab - as a group is it too much? Perhaps rein in the flowers for just the special characters or odd figure otherwise it kind of looks like the unit has invaded someone's garden.
-
What make are the figures? Or are they conversions?
I'd like some of them in my own undead horde.
-
gorgeous!

lol see your point about the garden! I've tried to make the bases as "full of life" as I can to contrast with the dead soldiers. The jolly summer flowers to brighten them up and the red poppies as a nod to the battlefields. When they are ranked up I have tried to make the plants flow from one base to the next. They actually don't look quite so bright in the flesh. ....... or they have invaded Chelsea flower show......

The Foot Sergeants are all from Mantic and are pretty much straight builds. The Foot Knights are a combination of Mantic bodies with bits from Fireforge ( helmets, Shields, some weapons and cloaks). Hope that helps.

I thought there was something a little odd to my eyes, but I think it's the nature of miniature flower clumps in general, rather than your use of them - sub-hemispherical bunches that seem a little like a florist's been smuggling bouquets around the battlefield. :)
But like I say, it's more to do with the way flower clumps are made, and I like the point you make with them.
Nice work overall. The foot knights look great, as expected. :)
-
Wow! Fantastic! I don't know how I missed your thread! These are all dead brilliant! :o You've put soo much life into these models! I love all the glowing effects! it's a pity you didn't like the lit up eyes, I think they really worked!
I think we must be due a group shot....
You also need some nice gothic-y terrain to go with it. Maybe a ruined church or high walls surrounding a grave yard, with a big metal pointy gate in the middle.
-
Great paint!
I'm really enjoying this project.

I find this tread just now: awesome project, I will follow with interest!

Thank you all for your comments.
I've just completed some ranged firepower to my army in the form of some skeleton archers. They are from Mantic Games and are a hybrid of their plastic skeletons and metal conversion parts. Unfortunately you only get enough in the set to do 10 so I had to convert two extra ones using bits from Wargames Factory.

The next two are conversions using bits from Wargames Factory:

And here they are ranked up. I think the converted ones blend in ok.

These are superb! I love the fact that they're wearing their livery of (past) life, rather than some "undead costume heraldry".
On the flowers: I'm generally a fan of really plain bases (a deeply unfashionable view, I know, but it was put forward by no less a luminary than Ali Morrison ...). But these work really well, I think. Yes, there is something slightly artificial - or stylised - about the abundant clumps of flowers. But so what? They make each miniature look (ironically!) like a still life - and a still life with a memento mori very much in evidence. It's a brilliant idea and terrifically well executed.
-
Great stuff, I particularly like the pose with the empty hood!
-
Very nice!
-
Brilliant stuff, I really like these archers!

Thanks gents. I will get the rest of the foot sergeants and some ghouls photographed shortly.

Splendid looking bony ones, your basing really does the work
-
And here they are ranked up.
When they are ranked up I have tried to make the plants flow from one base to the next.
I'm seeing it now! :) Nicely done.

Next up some "bellicose foot" in the form of some Mantic Ghouls.

I decided to get some "regiment" movement trays from Warbases. I really like these and they are very reasonably priced. Just need to match them to the figure bases ( although I quite like the naked MDF).

These all look fantastic. It's also refreshing to see quite a bright, and dare I say 'lively' looking Undead army!
May I be so bold as to ask which paint you use for the rust since it looks really effective? Also, since my knowledge of 28mm miniatures are pretty much limited to GW and Rackham, are the Sketetons also Mantic like the ghouls?
-
I will freely admit creative bankruptcy, I am now considering a Dragon rampant army made from fireforge crusaders with undead heads. I'm pretty sure that's just my mind making an amalgam of your lion and dragon rampant armies. lol

Thank you. The darker rust colour is Games workshop "Dark Flesh" and the lighter shade is "Brilliant Orange". The skeletons are all from Mantic Games.

Brill,
I really like the blue-lit eye sockets from your skellies, gives them a true animated feel. Nice touch! :)
