Title: Robotech gaming using HORIZON WARS
Post by: Achilles on June 21, 2016, 12:23:56 PM
Got to try out Horizon Wars today with my Robotech minis. :) Great little models-free game.

Battle Report is HERE. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zBDAncQaa4) :)

Interesting, I'll have to look into this.  I have no less than four starter bundles sitting in boxes...waiting for me to figure out what to do with them (and waiting for the damn second wave of freakin' stuff!)

They look great and Horizon Wars is fantastic - if you use all those that's probably a fairly big game there.

Pics look really great, but I haven't got an hour to watch a battle report.

Care to give us a brief idea of how Horizon wars handles robotech mecha?

In the main rulebook you'd simply pick a weight class for each one and design appropriate Stats/Perks. I made up cards for all mine so I wasn't constantly doing it on the fly. In the expansion for transforming Mecha, you can have as many 'forms' as you have Presence (so a Valkyrie VH1 would be a Presence 3 Mech with a Fighter, Mech and Air Drop Frame form). You'd probably want to start in Guardian (making you Airdropable to appear on the board) and could then choose between Battleoid and Fighter each round. :)

That said you design all your non-conventional forces yourself (Mechs, large Aircraft) so it's really up to you. :)

I'm sure Robey will pipe in here and answer any other questions you've got. He's the author after all.

The game could easily handle bigger and more conventional forces. 12 Presence is a pretty good 'demo' size. :)

I'll be using HW for the game as it lets me mix in tanks and other conventional stuff. Maybe someday we'll see the remaining models. :)

Sorry, didn't watch the video - I figured those mechs would be higher P value, maybe 3.

They will be when I start using the Transformation rules, as they have 3 Chassis modes. :)

Thanks for that.  Guess I need to give Horizon Wars a closer look!

I love any game that lets me design my own forces. HW was kinda the ticket for all the Robotech stuff I had lying around. :)

One thing that the Metaformers (non-IP-infringing multiform military assets) expansion does make clear is that you can't have a mech that metaforms into another mech.  I don't know much about Robotech, I'd be the first to admit, so don't know exactly how a Guardian-mode Valkyrie is supposed to behave. I assumed you could run it as an artillery piece in addition to jet and mech modes.  If a Guardian is supposed to be air-droppable, you could deploy it as Light Artillery, I suppose.

Or just keep them as separate profiles and not worry about it. Or just break the rules. ;)

Great looking paint jobs on the mechs.  :-*

I suspect Palladium have run out of funds at this stage so I doubt we'll see any further RRT products.

I'm unfortunately in the same thought camp...Kevin Siembeda has been a toolbag for twenty years, but as a die-hard Robotech fan this was kind of my one shot.  I thought "maybe I'll get all the first run stuff and then they'll go bankrupt! But at least I'll have it!".  So my expectations are incredibly low. :`
