Title: zombie apocalypse in Tromaville, my work so far on my terrain and minis
Post by: Zombie Ste on June 21, 2016, 02:08:55 PM
Hi all, I'm Ste and over the last year I've been slowly but surely building up and painting an army of the dead, a handful of desperate survivors and a 4x4 (& growing) modern American town to fight over.

Almost all of my terrain is from various mdf terrain manufacturers,  and is in various stages of completion,  mostly just need weathering and a spot of detail work here and there.

The minis again are from various suppliers,  mostly wargames factory,  and studio miniatures for the bulk of the male zombie population. Character zombies are Zombicide abominations and fatties I ordered as singles through various eBay sellers and the military squad are hasslefree.

Rules wise we're using the Zed or alive rules from rust devil games which uses savage worlds showdown as a basis... not sure how supported it is these days,  but I stretched for the PDF a year ago and really liked the RPG-lite system as well as the ability to grow and mutate your own virus strain.

Please let me know what you think so far,  any pointers or ideas are welcome too

Okay here goes

But creating a nice table is - lovely stuff. Is DinoGas a cultural reference to a show or comic? Because it made me laugh.

Thanks, it's an mdf kit from tt combat, here in the UK,  they've since made a better one that I now want to upgrade to. Judging by the engraved poster on it's side (the Vault Casino) I'm going to assume that it's Fallout related.

I absolutely adore mdf terrain,  and have built up quite a collection from about 4 different retailers,  and intend on adding my own conversion work to each and interiors before weathering everything up.

I initially rushed everything to a quick table painted standard, so as not to get lost in the details... starting to regret that now o_o

Great Table! I like how much you´ve brought out of this MDF Kits with the Painting!

The Gasstation ist NOT a Fallout related Brand, but it seems a Homage on the old 1950s Gasoline company Sinclairs!

Thanks for your kind words,  though the more I look at it, the more I want to crack on with the weathering, because it looks like we've had a zombie outbreak in toy town at the moment. As apposed to Tromaville...
Speaking of which, has anyone seen anything that could pass as a 30'-50' mutant squirrel monster in 28mm?
I need to go even more insane than mere zombicide fattys & abominations if I want to live up to the Troma name

Good find delta

Surprisingly, there's a giant zombie hamster in the Golgo Island range from East Riding Miniatures:

Oh yes, that wouldn't take much work to turn into a squirrel.  Have you any idea how big/tall it is?
I was contemplating butchering one of those gw skaven abomination-thingies

For those not in the know,  tromaville is the fictional location where most Troma films (a small b-movie company) take place. Such as the toxic avenger (still need to do a conversion of him) and nuke-em high.
The latter of which's sequels feature a 50' tall mutant squirrel

Here is a picture of my zombie horde so far 74 inc characters and counting each swarm as 4... got another 20 primed and ready to go

And lastly the first of my completed exteriors

Quick update,  just finished the exterior of my diner & a few zombicide minis

Probably need to invest some cash in weathering washes&spend a bit of time examining broken windows,  but all in all it looks better than it did before :D

Window on the left looks good, one on the right doesn't look right - if bullet damage, I think it needs to be more round (like a spider web). But only a very minor distraction, everything else is sa-weet.

Was thinking the same thing left : awesome; right meh.
However, if it was a plexiglas panel, you could get away with scratches on it, but the two types together in one building wouldn't quite fit (although, it could've been a temporary repair job)
When in doubt, get a hammer and nails and cover it with a wood panel or boards  ;)

Thanks for the honest opinions folks.
I wasn't terribly happy with that one either, so I'm going to take some scissors to it soon and I reckon it'll be easily salvageable.

Works stopped for a couple of days while I'm in night shift mode and also while I struggle to swallow the results of the referendum here in the UK :-[

I have a game planned for tomorrow evening (my first day off) and that normally gives me all the drive I need to throw myself in to painting and modelling projects for the next few days. So expect more pics in the coming week.  As always your kind words and constructive criticism is invaluable to me

I also got some funky flickering led blast markers that work perfectly for molotov blasts & other remains in play fire effects

Some pictures of my survivors

Here's my generic survivors,  all made using warlord/war gsmes factory plastics.
Note the news paper on the preachers base is actually a shrunken down image of the paper from the beginning of day of the dead.

(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w477/steven_norris3/Mobile%20Uploads/20160620_160738_zpseotdaxzp.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/steven_norris3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160620_160738_zpseotdaxzp.jpg.html)

Next up my military sqaud. These guys are hasslefree minis and probably see more game time than all my other war bands combined

(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w477/steven_norris3/Mobile%20Uploads/20160620_160951_zpscc77vebs.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/steven_norris3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160620_160951_zpscc77vebs.jpg.html)

Next up, my Cretins biker gang. Still struggling to figure out the vehicle rules for this system,  so these guys and girls haven't seen many games yet. Note the separate foot versions, and all riders are removable

(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w477/steven_norris3/Mobile%20Uploads/20160620_160609_zpsbxmyphst.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/steven_norris3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160620_160609_zpsbxmyphst.jpg.html)

And lastly,  originally built for a mixed up gorkamorka/necromunda game,  but now acting as my cretins mobile zombie scorcher,  the Cadilac of doom!

(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w477/steven_norris3/Mobile%20Uploads/20160620_161109_zpsejzhaiaz.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/steven_norris3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160620_161109_zpsejzhaiaz.jpg.html)

Hopefully I'll have that new terrain piece I mentioned in an earlier post finished before weekend and will post some images then

Works slowed to a standstill here due to the birth of my daughter and having my 6 year old son off on school holidays and in constant need of attention at the moment.
But I hope to update soon,  once I've had a chance to actually paint something o_o
Hell, I'll post some pictures of a game if I ever get a chance to do that again  lol

Title: back from the undead!
Post by: Zombie Ste on December 04, 2016, 06:51:36 PM
Ok, sorry folks, it's been a while since a last update. But that's because up until recently work had slowed to a crawl since my daughter's birth in late August.
After what seemed like an age without a paint brush in hand, I've finally managed to get back on the horse and get some hobby time in.
Recently we got into Zombicide,  mainly as a quick alternative to our regular scheduled zed or alive games, due to the easy pick up and play factor, and we've really fell in love with the characterful sculpts and zombivor alternatives for when your character dies.
I actually prefer these single piece sculpts to a lot of the alternative survivor options out there for zpoc games. So going forward we'll be forming our survivor groups from these minis & having zombivors at the ready, so when anyone dies, their number is added to the zombie hoard and the other survivors are forced to put their old comrades down.

So, here's my first batch of survivors
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w477/steven_norris3/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-12/20161201_155921_zpsagan1yi4.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/steven_norris3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-12/20161201_155921_zpsagan1yi4.jpg.html)
And thier Zombivors eventualities
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w477/steven_norris3/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-12/20161201_160013_zpsjuimretx.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/steven_norris3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-12/20161201_160013_zpsjuimretx.jpg.html)
And some more zeds
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w477/steven_norris3/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-12/20161204_184206_zpsii3wwkts.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/steven_norris3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-12/20161204_184206_zpsii3wwkts.jpg.html)

I've also been doing a bit more weathering and painted a few smaller"terrain-enhancing" elements such as the fencing in the images and scaffolding,  ladders, a overhead motorway sign & trash bags & cardboard boxes,  but not had a chance to properly photograph them yet

So, I meant to post a group shot once I hit the magical number of 100 zombies painted,  however,  I totally overshot the mark and at last count had 124 of the little blighters finished.

So without further ado, happy 124th zombie painted to me!
Here's a few shots of a 2x4 set up using all 124 plus a few survivors...
Sorry about the crappy picture quality

Thanks buddy. Yeah I love multiverse a lot,  but I've also got to give the other brands a lot of respect.  I'd suggest anyone aiming for a modern city scape should grab a least 1 or 2 kits from the likes of sarrissa priscision,  tt combat, knights of dice, 4ground and sally4th. Just to vary up your architecture,  very few cities are designed by a single achictect after all.
It was really nice to discover that the ladders and overhead road signs from multiverse fit near perfectly on the sarrissa buildings. I did a spot of sanding to the hooks on the multiverse stuff before spraying,  but probably would have done this anyway would I have been using them on multiverse's own kits to avoid potential paint wear to the building tops.

It all starts with a first survivor dude. For me it was a box of wargames factory survivors and the first thing I assembled was a Rick Grimes looking cop with a shotgun 2 years ago. From there my madness has grown ;D >:( :D o_o lol

Yeah,  one day I'll find the perfect parts or miniature to build a Toxie from and clean these streets up... until that day, the citizens of Tromaville are pretty much screwed lol

Anyone with any suggestions for a suitable miniature?????

Thanks for all the kind words folks,  this forum and it's really cool and supportive members really helps with keeping the drive going

Wonderful stuff!

I've got a nice sized growing horde of Zombies, monsters, and hunters, but I need a place for them to live.

I think building a table is the next logical step.

Very inspirational!

Seriously look in to mdf kits then mate. The cost to quality can't be beaten and a lot of the hard work is done for you.

Next project on the chopping block is a sally4th mall. Got one corner section finished and am just waiting on the rest arriving as Xmas presents. I'm sticking them all together in sections,  but leaving the base board (roads) separate so they will fit with my other terrain.  My roads are the gaming board itself with the sidewalks made from sheets of mdf I've engraved paving stones on or the bases of the buildings themselves.
The sally4th road/base boards themselves are still getting painted up so together with the mall itself can be used as a zombicide board I'm hoping to run at a charity event we're doing later next year.  Just hoping they make the internal corner section before then so I can do a 9 tile board instead of 6

First Christmas survivor and zombvivor finished.  Couldn't wait to get this guy, he's the main reason I got angry neighbours instead of toxic city mall (another set I'll have to pick up before long lol
It's just something about hockey masks I think, I just couldn't resist

Also as a stocking filler for the wife who loves Amy from Big Bang Theory, as well as the odd game of zombicide,   I bought and painted this little madam

Right, that's the Zombie target hit, as well as a nice little diversion for a couple of survivors.  I suppose I should get back to the terrain.  I've got 3 sections of sally 4th malls to get through as well as several 4ground shop interiors to furnish them... no rest for the wicked :D
