Title: Bohemian Blitzkrieg campaign - edit 4th August, see 1st post for new map moves
Post by: olicana on June 24, 2016, 10:29:40 AM
Hi guys,

The Lads have just begun a 1757 campaign using all the figures I painted. It's all going pretty well after a few initial cock ups and a re-boot. We are using the Bohemian Blitzkrieg campaign for Age of Reason rules.

The campaign set up and moves can be found here, as can first reports from the first battle:http://olicanalad.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Bohemian%20Blitzkrieg%201757%20campaign%20%28Summer%202016%29 (http://olicanalad.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Bohemian%20Blitzkrieg%201757%20campaign%20%28Summer%202016%29)

The forces available took some time to collect and paint, so I'd better use them, even if not actually playing with them myself, for something.

Bonsoir,

As always very impressed by your excellent chaps and wargames' room.

Just wondered whether if you had considered having the odd limber and caisson?

As a Napoleonic gamer I try and have them at each battle I put on, and, I'm pleased to report that fewer substitutions are needed than once was the case.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

Paul

I'm certainly doing it for my Napoleonic Peninsular stuff, though at a much reduced ratio. Although I'm appreciative of the aesthetic, I generally find limbers a cumbersome nuisance. For my SYW collection I would be more interested in adding a bridging train.

here is a three gun battery of British RA with a limber for when it's on the move. Note the depth of column would be the same as frontage deployed (180 mm)

Bonjour,

Splendid looking limber!

I do like the Front Rank ones so should find some that I've got and paint them.

Agree that limbers are cumbersome but that's OK with some rules like GDB.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Olicana,

Umpiring eh?

I agree wholeheartedly that umpires are a good thing and well done for stepping-up!

Great looking game too but maybe it deserves a separate thread?

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,

the battle is part of the campaign in which the troops (original post) are fighting. I thought I'd keep all the links in one place. It looks like the campaign is a winner, i.e. it will get finished, so I don't mind tagging what I remember to link to one home post.

Looks like an 'almost' great game.  What's missing?  A hill or three!  You must have some elevations somewhere, I'm guessing.

Love the amount of cavalry in the original pic of the post.

Interesting ending, exciting battle.
Your figures look great.
I have always had soft spot for the Austrians of this period.
Hope to read about more battles.
Thanks for sharing.

There are contours, there are, there are, lol lol lol. Unfortunately my camera doesn't quite pick up the difference in elevation and I've run out of fine pale flock to highlight the contours on my cloth some time ago and I haven't got around to getting more since my local model railway shop closed down. I've done a quick job using MS paint on this photo which might help. There was a large low (1" high) flat plateau about four feet long and three and a half feet wide that covered most of the top (northern) end of table and a smaller one (2" high) about one foot wide and two and a half feet long mid way down the eastern side.

As for 'terrain' design. We are using the 100 pre made 12 x 6 foot table 'maps' provided with the campaign. Some are VERY hilly, where two thirds of the table is hills, some three contours high (I'm not quite sure how I'll do those), whilst some are almost flat. Having visited Bohemia (Czech Republic) on numerous occasions I can absolutely confirm that some of it is quite flat (the whole of Chotusitz field is as flat as a pancake, so flat that it now has a big airbase on it) whilst some is very hilly, like Lobositz: This shot is from the Homolka Berg.

I quite often see Kolin games where the low ridges are represented as big hills but where, in fact, it is actually just one very long gently rising, fairly even slope from the Kaiserstrasse up to the top of a low ridge: certainly something to denote the higher ground is required but it's not actually a 'classic' hill. Is that very big low hill on my table representing something like this? Who can tell?

Likewise, at the top it doesn't have much of a slope on the other side and then it's pretty level behind for much of the ridge's length. This shot is taken looking towards the 'low ground' with the famous Oak Wood, usually depicted on tables in a big dip.

The campaign system is pretty good but the battles are too slow, haven't you tried quicker systems like blackpowder?

Hi Noigrim,

We're not using warfare in the Age of Reason to fight the battles. We're using a home spun version of Piquet especially developed for fighting battles with 30+ units a side. We like the tension of the initiative swings and flexible turn sequence.

Hm, with oriolbarcelona we're thinking of making a french and indian campaign next year, what rules would you reccomend?
we thought of age of reason for both but there is no "american setting" map that we know of.

Hi Noigrim,

For a French and Indian Campaign I think I have the perfect map part solution. Have got, played, or know of "Wilderness War" by GMT games. If you want to play that campaign that is where I would start. It is simply so elegantly splendid that I know, once played, you will want to marry it to your preferred set of table games rules for a belting campaign. This might take a bit of practice and you will need to play the board game a few times to see how the combat results work (for transferring table results back to the campaign map) but I highly recommend this is where you should start.

For the table games, I would look at Muskets and Tomahawks. I've only played four or five games with the League of Gentlemen Wargamers, and then not with the advanced rules, but I thought it excellent for recreating the feel of the that "Kleines Krieg" style of campaign. Being a count heads game it should be quite easy to transfer to a map based board game and vice versa.

a board game I reckon but whe would playi the battles with a wargame nice, any rules online?

For the battles we want big ones instead of skirmishes so age of reason should be better, perhaps e could adapt the above map to AoR?

here they are http://www.gmtgames.com/living_rules/WILDERNESS-2010_Rules.pdf (http://www.gmtgames.com/living_rules/WILDERNESS-2010_Rules.pdf) we can adapt to age of reason using each strength point as a base of 4 men, hence a line infantry unit has the usual 12 but an indian warband only 4

Ick, Age of Unreason.  'Nuff said.  (personal, pronounced prejudice showing)

Okay, now you point them out, I do see the contours, so good show.  As to the long hill, you just need that - a long hill - to go under your cloth.  I have several 4' long hills I can use on my table that is built but not quite finished.  One day soon.  I hope!

We are only using the Bohemian Blitzkrieg campaign rules. The battles are being fought using home spun Piquet.

Because everything here is 'under the table' so to speak, I use a modular hill building system using 1" (some 2") thick insulation board. It helps to resolve some storage issues, though when I've completely finished it will still fill two double door kitchen base units. Hills to cover a 15 x 6 table take up a fair amount of space.

This is the set up for Lobositz 1756

Storage?  Isn't that what the space under the table is for?!  I built my table extra high to allow more storage under it - and because I'm north of 6'.  I could fill our 8' x 12' storage shed with all my gaming stuff and still need more room.  I actually find based trees to be the real hog - but based trees sure set up a table faster.
Title: Re: Bohemian Blitzkrieg campaign edit 2nd July

My table is set at the height of kitchen units because that is what it's based on. Here is a WIP pic of two more units being added after I had a new kitchen fitted. There are two banks, one down either side. The 2' gap, running down the middle between them, is used to store 'gubbins of the trade' such as unused insulation board, large tins of paint, and all the other crud.

I live in a four storey Victorian town house, built in 1870, so it doesn't have a garage and the land, on which the house's stables stood, was sold (1940s? to build more housing) long before I bought the property. We don't even have a shed. We have a large, permanent lean-to in the back yard which is mainly used to store fire wood and garden stuff, and the large coal cellar under the front path is too leaky, because of the man-holed coal chute, to store much other than push bikes. It's quite a big house (by UK standards), and my game room is the third biggest in it, but storage is an issue.

BTW: The piece of table- top at the side there, is the drop leaf extension which extends the table from its basic fixed 12 foot length to 14' 8". I only put it up for big games because it only leaves an 18" at the end of the table when it's up. When it's down it covers the gap between the units, like a big door, for added tidiness.

You get some funny folks in Sheffield.
I hit a lot of flak from some South Riding sorts a few years back, including letters with death threats, maybe it's the water?
There was a study that linked old slate quarries in north Wales to mental instability, maybe the steel works have a similar legacy.

Personally we used to like the Triples back in the Octagon. (and the Royal Victoria Hotel shows before that). Never took to the new centre, expensive catering with no nearby alternative, big soul-less layout. And then there were car park charges.
It's a shame that it went as it did, but these things happen.

Grand looking SYW layout that you've got. If you're ever in Scarborough and fancy a friendly game the club here meets Mondays and Thursdays. A lot of the players are numpties, but they're not usually malicious.
