This is my first army specifically for Dragon Rampant, the Shadow Empire of Lo Pan. He was a "shadow emperor" appointed by the First Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Lo Pan was put on the throne as an impersonator because the Emperor was afraid of being assassinated. However, Lo Pan tried to take over and was cursed by the Emperor to exist without flesh for 2,000 years until he could marry a girl with green eyes.
Lo Pan, of course, is most well known to me from the film 'Big Trouble in Little China', a magnificent pulp movie where Lo Pan attempts to finally escape his curse, but hasn't counted on Jack Burton, truck driver. If you haven't seen this film, you really are missing out, and the rest of this post won't make a lick of sense.
My take on this army is based on Lo Pan not long after he was cursed by the emperor, maybe a few hundred years. He commands a variety of Chinese horrors, first and foremost of which are the terracotta warriors, which he has been able to steal from the emperor's tomb by virtue of the fact that he did sit on the throne himself, if only as an impersonator. These clay warriors are supported by jade mummies, hopping vampires, guardians (the weird ball monster from the movie) and other nasties. I'm hoping to include a Xing Tian, a headless giant. Lo-Pan's unit will have the sorcerer himself as well as his hairy, bestial servant, some demons and a so on. The three storms will operate as a unit on their own. If all goes well I might even try a terracotta warrior war chariot.

Thanks James!

They are from John Jenkins Designs, but they are OOP now, very sadly.

I used Renegade Chinese warriors for my Terracotta army figures. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=70306.msg854669#msg854669 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=70306.msg854669#msg854669)

I used Renegade Chinese warriors for my Terracotta army figures.
Very nice warriors Somnambulist! They're perfect. Oddly enough, I have some Renegade miniatures warring states infantry command on the way to me for my next unit. I used their halberds on my halberdiers here as the hafts of the originals were a bit wobbly for my liking. They also do very nice shields.
I may order some for crossbows later too, I want to see how the scale works. I had some Watchful Eye terracotta warriors planned to use as crossbowmen, but the scale difference is too great. Should the Renegace minis work out I may even try my hand at terracotta warriors mounted on bronze horses.
-
Do you have a scale photo of the Watchful Eye and Renegade figures by any chance?
Looking forward to seeing the bronze cavalry 8)
cheers
James
-
I do indeed.

The cavalry will be interesting. I've several photos of bronze horses that would look pretty great as miniature paint schemes, if I can pull it off!
-
They look awesome. I prefer mine from the land of the living though.
If anyone has any John Jenkins they would trade I have swaps, Watchful I and Curteys or even hard cash.
Look forward to seeing where you go with this.
-
Thanks Svennn. The one thing I'm having real trouble with is a getting a chariot that's in scale with the Jenkins sculpts.
-
I do indeed.
Ooo, there is quite a difference isn't there :?
cheers
James
-
There is, sadly, which is a crying shame as that Watchful I do really nice Chinese zombies and chariots too.
-
Could you use one of the chariots as a base?
cheers
James
-
Possibly, it's the horses that'd be the give-away mostly. For now, I'll concentrate on getting the warriors and Lo Pan's unit done I reckon!
-
I am sure we will find a way to get a JJD chariot into the project.
What is up next?
-
On the table right now is a unit of 12 sword and shield bearing terracotta warriors. After that:
12 terracotta warrior crossbowmen
3 hopping vampires
Lo-Pan and 5 retinue (jade mummy, 3 Yaoguai (demons) and Yeren beast)
3 storms
Xing Tian (headless giant)
6 bronze cavalry
12 guardians
Bronze chariot(?)
I'm building the army for Dragon Rampant, so everything is either single or multiples of 3.
-
I dream off getting one of those Jade mummys.
Loved this range when it was available but stupidly didn't buy any.
Looking forward to seeing how this all goes.
-
I bought the entire range when it was available and it slumbered untouched for years. It was one of those projects I really wanted to do, but always stayed down the queue. When Dragon Rampant came along, the amount of models required made it ideal, that gave me the push to start, that as well as a friend of mine who's doing a Japanese themed fantasy force for Dragon Rampant and a gorgeous set of terrain.
The swordsmen are almost done, I should have photos soon.
-

Finally my swordsmen are done. I had to pause while I looked for some good command models as I only had one set of the John Jenkins Designs command. I found an excellent source of Chinese Qin era miniatures at Renegade Miniatures in their Warring States range. They have plenty of infantry and command figures, but also a good range of cavalry, so I guess those terracotta warriors riding bronze horses is going to be happening now.

These are great, love the bronze effects :-*
Cheers
Keith
-
Cheers Keith. Quite different to how I normally do bronze, but I thought the green would warm them up a little. The palette is pretty restricted, so they needed a little pop. I'm going to have a fun time with the bronze horses for the cavalry.
-
Looks like the Renegade models are a very good fit. :)
-
Lovely stuff ...as always :o
It has made me think that the terracotta army might be a nice twist on Frost Grave...
All the best. Aly
-
They've turned out great 8)

James
-
Thanks everyone, I am enjoying working on these quite a bit.
It has made me think that the terracotta army might be a nice twist on Frost Grave...
Absolutely. As a setting, running about the dark halls of the first emperor's tomb would be theme heaven. As a warband, a Frostgrave take on a band of terracotta warriors would be great fun. The apothecary could be a mobile kiln.

After a lengthy delay, my final unit of terracotta warriors is done. The crossbowmen give the army a little ranged ability, and fit nicely with finds made in the warrior pits. The Chinese crossbow of the time was incredibly advanced, mass produced, simple and reliable, so it would be remiss to omit them from the army.
With this unit my clay painting technique has moved on again. I've stippled more colours over the basecoat before washing and drybrushing to give the impression of the remains of paint. The original warriors would have been very brightly coloured, gaudy even. I added some flowers to the bases to give them a little more colour.
With the crossbowmen done, that give me three infantry units, the halberdiers, swordsmen and crossbowmen, the guts of the army. It was a bit of a slog near the end, but I'm delighted they are done, and I'm very happy with them.
Here they all are, emerging from a hidden tomb entrance at LoPan's foul bidding, ragged pennants blowing in the wind as they await their new master.

Truly wonderful.

Thanks very much. Here's the latest addition:
Buried with his wife Dou Wan one hundred years after the first Emperor was interred in his tomb, he was awoken by LoPan to find tomb robbers had stolen Dou Wan's body. They would have taken him too no doubt, but the thieves warding stone failed them, and one of Sheng's tomb guardians awoke in time to scare off the looters before they could ransack the tomb further.
Something of a hedonist in life, Sheng's focus was sharpened by undeath. His suit ensured he was not bound fully to LoPan's will, and so Sheng resolved to find his lost wife and restore her to her rightful resting place, a quest he pursues relentlessly when not attending his new master.

I LOVE this thread! Your painting is just excellent and the idea behind the collection is brilliant! Where is the Jade Prince model from...?

Thanks very much Timotl. The jade prince is from John Jenkins designs, long OOP now.

Hello everyone. Very nice work on your Lo Pan army Mr. Saturday. Not sure you all of you had a chance to see the updates to my Terracotta Army but feel free to check them out on my website www.watchfulistudio.com and go to the projects page.
They are definitely a different feel and a more 'low' fantasy approach to the army but a full army range will be coming out hopefully in the 1st quarter or next year.
To all my European fans, I was seriously considering a plan that involves my attendance at Salute or another European show. Would that be a welcome addition or should I find another way to make my miniatures available in Europe? I have been trying to find a partner but to no avail at the moment.
Hope you enjoy the progress of the Terracotta army and there are some more monsters currently in the works so stay tuned. Happy Holidays and if anyone has an interest I am having a holiday sale starting Friday, November 25 and ending Wednesday, November 30. I am offering a 20% discount on all items in the store. Just use the coupon code ChineseAdventure at checkout. :)
Joe
-
Thanks Joe. I've been watching the updates to your range with great interest. I'm very keen to pick up your wonderful Xing Tian when it's released. Are the temple dogs with riders available yet? I've only seen the 'living' versions on your website.
A European distributor would be wonderful. Shipping can be heavy coming from the States. I'm sure you'd be very welcome indeed at one of the larger European shows.
-
:o :o
What a wonderful project, Mr S

.
A great idea to use the terracotta chaps as a fantasy army.
The colour combinations are wonderful, especially the greens on Liu Sheng.
Wonderful brushwork all round.
Love it!

-
Thanks Mason!
-
Mr. Saturday - Thanks and I appreciate the interest and I completely understand about the shipping costs. I wish I was large enough to eat some of the shipping costs to allow customers to get the goodies. :)
Xing Tian should be released by the end of the year along with the War Drum platform. The Terracotta Palace Guard along with the rest of the range should start to become available early in 2017.
I will continue to look for a European distributor because as a customer myself I know how discouraging it can be when you want to buy something and its too cost prohibitive to order it.
Thanks, Joe

The Yeren always intrigued me in the movie. No explanation is ever offered as to why this hairy niutball is wandering around LoPan's hideout, he just kind of shows up and does his thing. He seems to be in thrall to LoPan though, so it makes sense to add him to the retinue.
The Yeren, or Chinese wild man, is a kind of demon/orangutan/gorilla/hobo combo. He's a curious wee fella with his sloth-like claws and too-wide mouth, and he adds some much needed colour to the army. I kept the colours pretty close to the movie character, though it took me a couple of attempts before I was happy with the face.
That then gives me two of LoPan's retinue done with four more to go. Next up will be a triumvirate of demons, Ching Dai's enforcers.
-
Beautiful brushwork.
Such a wonderful composition with the base contrasting superbly with the beastie himself.
:-* :-*
This is such a great project to follow.
:)
Really looking forward to the rest of the retinue.
-
Thanks very much Mason, kind words indeed.
I need to do some research on colours for the demons, I want them to be quite vibrant. Before that though, I have a seasonal mini to paint up!
-
Hi,
just came to this thread and have to confess: I have to steal the idea of building a terracotta army like this!
This will be my scenario for 2018 games fair in my home town.
I will gladly point out where I got the inspiration from, though!
Cheers
GS
-
I'm glad to have been of some inspiration GS, good luck with it!

Great thread!

Missed this last update. Lovely work, I think that jade is sublime 8) 8)

I've finished the 3 Yaoguai for Lo Pan's retinue. I agonised over colours quite a bit on these guys. I wanted them to be quite bright, in stark contrast to the terracotta warriors, wearing fine immaculate silks, oiled horns and well made weapons. They are the bodyguards of Lo Pan, after all. Only the sorcerer himself is missing from the unit now.

So next up, Lo Pan himself. I might try the glowing eye thing, we'll see. Then it's six floating guardians.
-
Very nice effect on the cloth. Not that the rest is not great. Is there some metallic or iridescent mixed in the highlights?
-
Beautiful brushwork!
Great cloth, nice shine to the horns and that 'fleshtone' you have given them is superb.
:-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks very much!
Is there some metallic or iridescent mixed in the highlights?
There is. I mixed silver into the highlights for the sash to give it a more silky look.
-
I love that blue! :-*
-
Great work, interesting silk effect :-* :-*
LB
-
Thanks. Adding metallic to the paint to simulate silk is something I want to explore a bit further, I think it might be a useful technique.
-
Very nice.

After a hefty sabbatical, I've returned to the project with the man himself, Lo Pan.

Great stuff!

Thanks all!
@What are the Guardians? - The guardian is from the movie, the floating demon ball thing that hangs around Lo Pan's lair. I just gave him a few mates.
-
No, no - I knew that. I don't recognize the *models* - where are those from?
-
Ah right, gotcha. They are 'Ball Monsters' from Macrocosm. There's quite a range, even blobs and dead ones. http://www.macrocosm.co.uk/
-
Awesome collection! Quite inspiring indeed. :-*
Question: What is the sourc of Lo Pan and his bodyguard retinue?
-
Thanks Viden. They are mostly from 'The Demons' set for A Fistful of Kung Fu': http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=5907
The jade mummy is from John Jenkins Designs, which is OOP I'm afraid.

Three Emperor's guard finished! Here's the complete group:

The three guard are bases on Pulp City's Terror Cotta warrior. I carve them up a bit to make 3 variants.

Those terracotta beasts are wonderful.

Thanks Mason. It's a bit of a leap, the eldar tech, but I think I've managed to hammer it into a decent narrative.
