I am planning a little range of Kobolds and the one thing I am struggling with is to find proper allied creatures. We were pondering with giant rats, bugs that can be herded into battle and such, but none of it felt quite right.
Does anyone here have a good idea?
-
Kobolds are mine goblins, right? ???
So a tunnelling creature, maybe some kind of battle-mole? Those ones with the star shaped noses would look freaky, or the naked mole-rat....
Big hands and gnashy teeth!
-
If I remember well when described in Dee and Dee Kobolds had wild boars if living in dark forests or giant weasels if living in subterranean settings.
-
Beetles sound good, especially the rhino versions. Or cockroaches too?
-
Rock eating worms and mobile, exploding, poison fungi. And slime molds and giant woodlice (trilobites).
-
Salamanders!
-
Early D&D they were yappy dog men so perhaps something canine. I noticed the more modern D&D incarnations of Kobolds are Lizard/draconian types like so maybe a big old dragon :D or some drakes.
-
Huge cave cockroaches, feasting on enormous piles of bat shit and any creature that falls dead to the cave floor. Or any creature unlucky enough to fall to the floor and succumb to the toxic gasses emanating from the generations-old heaps of effluence.
And that's before you fantasy it up.
-
Sorry Diablo Jon but they always been described as reptilian even in D&D 1st ed. They were described as scaly and laying eggs. ;)

I don't think that's quite right. In the first edition of D&D, the only description is "Treat these monsters as if they were Goblins except that they will take from 1-3 hits". And in Chainmail, on which D&D was built, they seem to be the same thing as Goblins (which, etymologically, makes sense).
All the scaly, egg-laying stuff came later, I think - as did the resemblance to dogs.
-
Never played Chainmal (to me it's not D&D but its father lol) but in the monster manual 1st ed they are. Well anyway, that's not really an issue. Let's go back to Schrumpfkopf's request.

Nor me! Yes, I think it's AD&D where the doggish/reptile thing comes in. In the illustrations to first-edition D&D, a goblin has a long beard (and why not?) as does an elf, a gnoll has no resemblance to a hyena and an orc is devoid of any porcine features.
Yes, indeed: how about some blind - indeed eyeless - albino trolls that have evolved that way at the roots of the mountains and which are quadrupedal for the most part? I imagine the kobolds prodding them into battle with pointed implements. Also, giant grubs!

Dungeons and Dragons red book Dungeon Masters guide circa 83 (OK not the earliest reference)
These small, evil doglike humanoids.
AD&D 2nd edition complete book of humanoids
they have two small horns atop their dog like heads
also
dog-like voices
you can see why I might have thought they were dog like :D
As an aside the second book mentioned has kobold characters down as having non-weapon proficiencies for animal training giant weasel and animal training wild boar...
-
Thanks for the fantastic feedback. To me Kobolds are cold blooded creatures and the similarities to dogs are mere coincidence.
That said am I not particulary keen on fiding something that comes from the same gene-pool.
I think rather large insects fit the bill. A proper Centipede comes to mind.
Anyway - thanks again. It's interesting to see the development of the Kobolds.
-
I think something like a pillbug would be awesome as a mount, or a warbeast...

Here's a proper centipede. :D

That's one mean beast. I think we have a winner.
-
And here are some images... This guy is smaller than my thumbnail.

Love it!
-
Very cool. I like that guy a lot.
What about one of those cave spider type creatures for a mount. It would be too spindly but I think they look freaky and would fit kobolds very well.

What a fantastic beast! Never seen that before.

That's nicely done! Man, its tiny...
What a fantastic beast! Never seen that before.
Amblypygids (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amblypygi), More easily remembered as (as mentioned) cave spiders, tailless whipscorpions, and in spanish-speaking countries, cankles. (Which I would prefer if it wasn't already terrible slang for swollen ankles) Though they're not spiders (order Aranaea) or scorpions (order Scorpiones) but their own separate order, Amblypygi, within Arachnida. They're called tailless whipscorpions because their whips are their first pair of extremely (http://dancingsnakenaturephotography.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/IMG_7276-Male-Tailless-Whip-Scorpion-Amblypygi-%C2%A9Dancing-Snake-Nature-Photography.jpg) long (http://www.bumblebee.org/invertebrates/images/HeterophrynusElaphus.jpg) legs, adapted into feelers, as opposed to the whipscorpions of order Thelyphonida (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thelyphonida), which have their 'whips' at the end of their abdomens. :D
I used to have a couple of small ones, back when I kept things with too many legs. They sit still most of the time but move like lightning. You can barely see it, almost like teleportation.
Khurasan used them as the model for their 'Arachnian' aliens (http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/28mmscifi.html), though while I don't blame them for leaving off the spindly parts, I think there's still room for a few different gaming-miniatures interpretations...
-
Weeeell ... that's my nightmare for tonight sorted then.
-
As much as I like these creeps - I somehow think that they might be a bit to fiddly as a model to be honest.
For the first 'allied monster' I've settled on a centipede.

If these Kobolds are cast in metal, I'm throwing some money at you. Looking great!
-
Very nice. I sculpted a mutant centipede a while ago. Ended up looking quite good and vicious.

Please share!
-
I didn't comment earlier simply because I've never had occasion to paint a Kobold or see one in a RPG...they are just too twinky/fragile. HOWEVER, your Little Dog Faced Guy is JUST TOO COOL to maintain my prejudice. AND the centipede has potential to be just as cool. OUTSTANDING WORK!
-
Kobolds in large numbers with good tactics, traps, and tricks, can bring down even higher level parties. One of my favorite foes.
-
Speaking of pillbugs...
I knew I'd seen some somewhere. This one was used as a mount for fungus-guys, but hey, why not kobolds, too. Use a really big one as a siege engine transport.

Here's the sculpt I did. Mutant so I didn't have to have it anatomically correct and allowed me to sculpt poorly (I'm happy with it)
For some reason I didn't take photos after changing the mandibles at the front (or whatever you call that part)
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=74651.msg916919#msg916919
Really like that pillbug. Looks good for a non-threatening type mount.
-
I received a couple of dollies and I couldn't keep myself from painting one up. They're really small (like proper lvl1 monsters should be) and yet really well detailed.
The centipede is almost ready too, and more spears with proper armour, and bows and the champion and the shaman.

More pics of everybody soon.
-
Looks great - and would make a terrific 15mm lizardman too!
-
You'd need to field a horde of them for a proper challenge...
So how much will a horde cost?
(Kobolds need bows, or blow-guns. Some sort of missile troops - I've always played 'em as leery of getting into melee with "Biggers" unless they seriously outnumber their foe.)
-
Very nice. Really level one as you say. I could imagine a hero just wading through them with wild swings.
-
I now have an initial set of minis, and I like them so much that I'll certainly keep expanding this range.
Lvl1 - wars - here I come!

These are excellent! When are you releasing them?
Glad you like them. I am planning a crowd funding campaign that features, Kobolds, Halfling raiders and a small set of rules written by that Mersey guy. I think the campaign will go live in Oct./Nov.
-
All of them are lovely but that centipede really does it for me.
-
Really liking the Kobolds. Looking forward to October then near my birthday :)
-
For some reason I feel like those kobolts would look great in a very dark skin colour with skull face paint.
-
Very nice. Centipede looks great too!
-
Nice, looking forward to October.
-
Yup, lovely little critters. Question is - what can you tell us re the KS project? Is it some form of skirmish in the upper levels of a dungeon?
-
THanks everybody! I really like this range a lot. :)

The fluff is in it's early stages, but dungeons and dark dense forests are on the table.
THe amount of models is rather low, but can be scaled. I will post an AAR sometime soon.
-
The Little Rogues turned out WONDERFULLY...the Watchman is really cool as well. OUTSTANDING WORK as always!
-
Great thread, sorry I just found it. Kobolds in several early D&D adventures always had a giant Weasel or two. Lost some good characters to those...
Centipedes work too.
-
The rules are coming along well and I started doing some art for the booklet. One thing that still isn't clear to me is if I want more traditional colors or possibly something that has more of a recent feel to it.
I tried both, orange and reptiloid and was adding a bloke with skull face since that suggestion was pure gold. The graphics are still a bit unfinished and blocky, but it's getting there.

I like the little orange guy myself, though I guess it depends on where you think they live. I would possibly paint mine to be cave dwellers and maybe go for a vary pale, gollum palette. I would avoid green, don't want to get them mixed up with goblinoids!
-

I'm glad we agree. :D Looking at them I think the skull face paint would make for a nice shaman to any tribe, though I will probably do my entire group like that.
-
Almost there!

Kobolds, giant centipedes, rust monsters and stirges so far. I am really tempted to do a range of gnomes as well...

FANTASTIC ILLUSTRATIONS! The Kobolds & Company are looking better with each new post. OUTSTANDING WORK!

I didn't see the feathery bits out front. Now I see it.
Looks great. Gnomes could be interesting, although I'm more into the bad guys.

Me too.
The point is that buying the old 3rd edition gnomes to field a proper force will be about as expensive as having new ones made. :--)

Ah well. Still looking to launch next month?
I'll have to release the 2nd wave of the Halflings first.
The Kobold ranges and the booklet will hit KS by the end of the year.
I will soon start to send Kobold samples out however, so feel free to PM me if you like some.
-
Is that offer up for everyone or just good painters lol

Anyone who's keen! There's a little bowl of critters and they like you as much as the best painter in the world for as long as you get them painted. :--)
I'd have to ask for P&P tho.
-
Very nice indeed !!!! Would paint one or two for you if you want?
-

Klaro :--)
Please send me a PM - I can't really mingle this with the KS stuff. (it's really surprisingly demanding to keep things tidy)
-
Would love to paint as many of the little buggers as you're willing to send. PM sent!
-
The Kobolds look fantastic, but my main interest would be in those human guard minis, please say they will be part of the KS.
Pretty pretty please.

Which ones are you talking about? I have two full sculpts and that project with different bodies and arms.

The ones that Cubs painted and posted here recently (if that narrows it down), they have wonderful faces, would fit in perfectly with my oldhammer humans, just the right side of 'goofy' for my tastes.
The human watchman/guard in this thread is wonderful too :)
edit: these fellahs

Right. Yes, I think I can safely include these two (and a couple more).

That is good news :)
Looking forward to the campaign.

me too

So... does this mean we're looking at a dungeon-crawl? :)
-
Can't wait to get a set of those kobolds. Really nice work! I'm thinking a dungeon will be the project for this winter.
-
So... does this mean we're looking at a dungeon-crawl? :)
No, they're mostly skirmish rules. :--)
A little run down of what happened:
1. I wanted a very small set of Kobolds as a give away in the upcoming Halfling KS.
2. God, they were so damn cool.
3. We decided to make a set of spears, bows and a champion
4. Repeat 2
5. We asked Dan M. if he'd up for writing a little set of rules to include in the campaign.
6. The original campaign grew out of proportion and we decided to cut the Kbold stuff off.
7. The rules were extended beyond the initial scope (some comment here in LAF about heroes wading through a sea of critters while swinging their blades got noticed)
Our plan is to have a classic set of RPG/Adventurer type of characters, some henchmen (the guards) and many different Kobolds and other critters to face them. I went as far as to talk to Matt from Model Earth about doing some Kobold themed dungeon tiles (with eggs, traps etc..)
Anyway - the rules will still be small and affordable and something to fluff out on rather than the holy grail of perfect mechanics. The order system is really clever tho, but I guess it will be best to ask Dan to talk about the rules.
Anyway, here's a centipede from that range. Michaels clean sculpting really works well here.

I would love that centipede as a huge leader monster for my 6mm project. :-* :-* :-*

Wow, that looks great! A lot of legs there... how many pieces will that figure be???

The centipede is a beauty. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Rust Monster, too.
Those rules sound excellent. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who rarely finds the time to put together a 'proper' RPG campaign, but this sounds like something that would scratch the itch without necessarily having a large time commitment!
Given that Dan Mersey is doing the rules, I'm sure it'd be fairly easy to modify according to our whims. I love his rules.
-
Yep. That Centipiede!

Thank you. I am about to send out play test versions, if this would be of interest to you.

Michael is doing a proper version with attached legs cut into 4 pieces.
I am pondering with a 'pro' version made of 1 big body part and 100000000 little feet. It would likely be a good bit more expensive since the casting would be a right nightmare.
-
Urgh, that centipede just makes my skin crawl. Great looking minis all round!
-
These look fantastic! If kobold samples are still going or if any more playtesters are needed, I'd love to get involved. I'll send a PM.
-
Playtest and/or painting , I'm available!
-
Thanks guys - I am happy to send Kobbos to anybody who voiced intereset so far, same goes for the rules proto type.
Cheers!
-
I received my sample kobots today. LOVE The sculpts, the quintessential kobolts imho. Painting them right now, I'll get some pictures when the light is a bit better.
-
They are very nice aren't they. Small but so well detailed. I'll definitely be getting some more.
-
I've likely just missed it, but were you planning to have any Kobolds in robes or heavier armour? The little guys seem to be known for their sorceror inclinations after all, and a big boss would be great!
-

Yep, A shaman, some armoured elite and a Kobold king on Dragon skull throne are in the planning.
-
Just got the Kobolds you send me. Very nice sculpts! :-* :-*
-
I've just come across this thread and, well, I'm a little bit in love. Those have to be some of the most nasty little kobblies I've ever had the pleasure of clapping my eyes on. Such neat, clean sculpts.

I received the latest set of the rules as well as a nice bag of Kobolds.
I know I spoke to a few that were interested in testing the engine and painting up a few lads.
Please pm me again!
(It really makes it so much easier to me than working my way through a mountain of PM's)
Thanks :--)
-
PM sent again and glad to hear about the robed and armoured elite guys! Any concepts for them around?
-
PM sent!
-
Wahey, the samples arrived! Thanks again. I'll paint them up pretty soon, just need to obtain some more flagstone bases to fully finish them once I start.
-
Got my little sample fellas too, here they are with a splash of paint:

Not sure about the green to be honest, but its growing on me.
-
Those look great!
Here are mine - many thanks for them, Schrumpfkopf! They're delightful little miniatures.
-
Glad you like them guys, they look really cool!
PM sent again and glad to hear about the robed and armoured elite guys! Any concepts for them around?
Yes, this will be layered armour. I'll need to work more on the graphics. Especially helmets seem a pita.
-
Hobgoblin, yours look fantastic! Blue was my second choice, but I think I'll take the green up a shade or two. Yours remind me of the need to paint them like you would 10 or 15mm- nice, bright colours.
Schrumpfkopf, they really are fantastic little figures. My only other experience with resin was 'finecast'- these are better by a long, long way. Great detail, easy to paint, and full of character.
-
Edit: My first attempt wasn't great and the darker colours obscured a lot of the detail for such a small mini, so I did another test this time using much lighter tones. An improvement I think, and the little guy looks the part.
-
Very nice minis!! Where can I buy them?

Lovely models Kawe. Love the Kobolds. I remember painting up a number of Kobolds for Michael Broadbent when he sculpts some for The Goblin Factory some years ago.

Thanks Helen, I'd be very happy to send you some of these if you like.

Only next year I'm afraid.
Edit: My first attempt wasn't great and the darker colours obscured a lot of the detail for such a small mini, so I did another test this time using much lighter tones. An improvement I think, and the little guy looks the part.

Fantastic painting. That skin tone is brilliant.

Thanks Kawe, that would be lovely. Many thanks for your kindness.

Very nice! These are exactly the small stature Kobolds I'm looking for. The scale of other commercially available Kobolds always seem to large for my taste. Can't wait for these!

I was sending a link to everybody who got the rules - please contact me if I forgot you. :--)

WIP kobolds. Should be done soon & based in a few days.

I initially didn't have much interest in these, but after they sat on my desk for a few weeks, I had to paint them! They've really grown on me, and I like them quite a bit. I may "need" more... lol

We now started the guard minis. And then there's that shaman. WE discussed whether he should be more new age D&D with proper wizard hat vs. little sparky grotto witcher.
Anyway - There's some sort of uber champion coming and a bit more of the guards/henchmen stuff.
Fun times!

I was also painting some more stuff for that cross-eyed little set of rules.

I am just wrapping up the guards and the rules and then it's all Kickstarter and ice cream. :--)

You promise to tell us when the KS goes live, right? I mean, you've got one guaranteed backer right here.

Absolutely - I think it'll take another 2 months, but won't make promises unless I have the paper work sorted.

Any updates on the ice cream?
