Figured I'd share a WIP that goes nicely with Bob Munch's set of 28mm pulp figures, @ https://pulpfigures.com/products/view/28

I've always been a fan of this style of aircraft and after reading a comment recently that this 1950's vintage kit was closer to 1:54th scale (see http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/glen/kit_glen_4101.shtml ) than the advertised 1:48th, found one on ebay for less than $20 shipped.

This kit was reboxed and marketed by GLENCOE. GLENCOE-boxed kits are easier to find and with a bit of patience, can be found for about the same price.

The quarter is for scale. While technically the design was introduced in 1936 and didn't come into civilian hands under after WWII, it's got the right 'look' for 30's Adventurers.

Note that at 34' long and with a 39' wingspan (when assembled), it's theoretically small enough to be deck cargo on a tramp steamer. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_J2F_Duck

Indeed a splendid Pulp 'Plane!!
The sample above seems a bit bent, starboard wingtip n'all...
Likely still airworthy, if only just, her boat bits all appear shipshape.
I love Bob Murch's figures, & admire his intrepid inter-war airmen!!
Now that he's re-sculpting all his sailors, perhaps we can lobby for a nautical crew for this Navy 'plane?

I'm a big fan of sea planes ,they instantly add an exotic feel to your table.I alway go for an over kill of wear and tear weathering for my pulp planes.
Im looking forward to seeing how you get on.(as this planes on my wish list)and your take on it,as I'm always open new ideas I can pinch.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I'd thought about water-lining this model, but wanted to do a K.I.S.S. build (resisting the temptation to fit it with extended long-range fuel tanks, a second radial engine and/or doubled counter-rotating props).

To fit the pre- and post-war narratives, this won't be fitted with guns (although the pintel mounts at the rear of the upper cockpit, as well as both windows, are only for a film camera). https://pulpfigures.com/products/view/18

Yes, thatīs mine. The kit was a really good and rather expensive czech 1/48th scale model though. I still find her (the Duck) one of the most pulpy planes ever and perfectly right for any amphibious pulp adventure on a gaming table! :D http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=14627.0

And for some reason I have the Tale Spin theme song stuck in my head now. Which is extra disturbing when it's running at the same time I', looking at Valerik's fine cheesecake shot there. :)

The Duck used in MURPHY'S WAR belonged to collector Kevin Weeks, a late war J2F-6 (note the engine cowling, removed for it's RN role) he named Candy Clipper for the original Navy J2F operating in the Philippines as the Japanese noose was tightening around Bataan and Corregidor. In addition to bringingn in critical supplies for the American and Filipino defenders , the pilots also brought candy for the nurses, which earned the aircraft the nickname The Candy Clipper.
That story turns even more pulp worthy of it's own scenario.
Not sure if this is the same plane had been abandoned after a Japanese attack and then salvaged in early 1942 by members of the 20th Pursuit Squadron. However, it had a dead engine and remained hidden at Cabcaben airfield until a cylinder could be removed from a destroyed J2F-4 submerged in Manila Bay and the engine repaired.
Overloaded with five passengers and the pilot, it departed after midnight on 09 April 1942, - the last aircraft to depart Bataan before the surrender of the Philippines to the Japanese only hours later.
Among its passengers was Carlos P. Romulo (diplomat, politician, soldier, journalist and author), who recounted the flight in his 1942 best-selling book I Saw the Fall of the Philippines

Your right not to waterline this one ,it definitely looks better as it is .Plus it's more versitle.
Mines waterlined be cause of the way it's stored,The vickers 'k's are there because I'd them spare and it just looks better for Pulp with them on .
As a matter of interest just how tall is the model(table to wing top),a picture with a figure in would help with a sense of scale.

This later pressing does have many more marking choices.
The older, ITC (Ideal Toy Co) moulds have a neato clear/blue wave based display stand though!!
