I finished up a few Hydra Miniatures 'Retro Raygun' figures today, and because there will be some more figures from this genre coming down the pipe in the foreseeable future, I figured I'd better go ahead and make an 'ongoing thread' in the popular LAF manner.
First up is the Empress Xenovia and her Alpha Panther:
Along with some Zenithians. Hydra only has three of this faction available right now. They were pretty fun to paint.

Plus a couple images from a ways back, that I don't recall posting here on LAF:
Next up will be some robots (after a bit of Darkest Africa, in a different thread of course ;) )
-
That looks brilliant! The aliens look just the bad guy from Major Matt Mason! One of my fave childhood toys!
-
Has a very Flash Gordon feel to me...love the terrain.
-
Lovely work Matt :-* :-*
The terrain has got the right sort of vibe as well 8)
cheers
Jes
-
Beautiful colours - the transitions on that panther; sublime.
-
Beautiful! I'm a sucker for that retro sci-fi rayguns and rocket ships vibe. The first pic has had me heading off to track down the Alpha Panther. I need that model ;)
-
Really nice figures! The back drops are really cool also
-
Wow! I have been resisting these for so long.....
-
Look great. :)
-
Superb work love the colours
-
Excellent pics and PJs, looking forward to seeing more! :)
-
Pictures for the next Number One in the LPL. Great.
-
Utterly brilliant! Love them!
-
Stunning and inspirational!
I am taken by the scenery you've used. I think the glass structures are an absolutely smashing idea.
-
Crikies, Matt, those are awesome!
I went to Hydra's site, and see he had the good sense to put your images up right away.
I never noticed the 'panther' before; impressive fig made wonderful by your brush, of course, but does add greatly to the terror of the cruel 'ladies.'
Doug
-
Wonderful work as always Matt.
-
Great idea and execution, please more!
-
Veeeeeery lovely paintjob, love the skintones in female figures!
-
Brilliant work - these figures are very tempting even though I have no use for them at all!
-
Can I ask what the crystal like scenic bits are? They look pretty effective in the setting
-
Thanks for the comments all!
Can I ask what the crystal like scenic bits are? They look pretty effective in the setting
The crystals are plastic icicle Christmas tree ornaments from the 'Dollar Tree' store , end cut off and glued to a masonite base, then some various hirst arts cast pieces and joint compound for texture.
I thought I had a pic or two of just the crystals, I'll try to dig them up.
-
Nice work. One day I'll get onto my retro sci-fi project :)
-
Lovely work. Makes me very nostalgic for Flash Gordon on bbc2 on a Saturday morning.
Brilliant work - these figures are very tempting even though I have no use for them at all!
Try as I might, I just don't understand the words in this sentence , particularly the last 8. :D

I've had these painted for several weeks but the manufacturer, Hydra Miniatures, wasn't ready to announce them. They should be up for sale on their webstore soon. They are Empire of Marduk soldiers from the Retro Raygun range.

Very nicely done.
-
Excellent pjs! :-*
-
:o :o
Great brushwork on some really nice figures.
:-* :-*
-
Ha! Those are brilliant Matt :-*
-
Fantastic! :o Very Flash Gordon!....Original, not film.
-
Given my level of lack of talent, hardly worth mentioning after the stellar lights' approbation, but, quite simply, jaw dropping work, lad.
Doug
-
I need these figures so much.
-
Oh cool, I was wondering when the Imperials would finally show up. Been waiting for those quite a while now.
Lovely paint jobs.
-
Lovely paint work on some lovely figures :-* :-* :-*
-
Fantastic work Matt. Nice color combinations.
-
Oh my goodness. Such paint work.
Don't mind me, I will just be throwing all my lead in the lake...
-
Very Flash! Ah aaaah ;)
-
Utterly brilliant stuff you've painted there. Inspires me to get back to finish off my less stellar painting on my own project.
-
This looks superb...what about some black & white photos to capture the 30's feel...
-
My LPL Round 2 entry is intended to be part of my 'Retro Space' project.

This is wonderful!

Wonderful painting!

Excellent.
-
I painted some new Retro Raygun miniatures for Hydra a few weeks ago and have been awaiting their official announcement before I posted them. These are for the 'Imperial' faction- two Magi and a character named Lord Zarek.

-
Pretty damn cool! :o
-
Incredible work, thanks for sharing!
Retro Raygun miniatures by Hydra becomes better and better.
-
Wonderful, as a fan this beautiful range grows too slow. Hope to get them soon in the shops. Rediscovered Galactic Worlds(Space-version of .45 Adventures) and these figures fit well.
-
wonderful brushwork on some excellent additions to the range.
:-* :-*
-
Agree, and some great photography too!
-
Wonderful stuff as always can i ask where is the skimmer from please? (https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F_QTrgAajIM/WPJW6WxVeZI/AAAAAAAAA2c/KHaWnqOEKEYoQAeGgEzjK8LfcexZ5hpygCLcB/s1600/Skimmer.jpg)
-
Great paint!
Well done.
tt43.
-
Thanks all, Hydra has some neat stuff coming down the pipe.
Wonderful stuff as always can i ask where is the skimmer from please?
The skimmer was produced by Pulp Alley, I think it was on a limited basis though, doesn't look like they have any up on the store.
-
Oh that's lovely. Great job on the skimmer.
-
I'm damn splah over the whole thread, as you know, Matt, but that windscreen is the bomb!
Doug
-
Stunning paintwork there, and the models are nicely designed. 8) 8) 8)
-
Lovely work!
The pic with the magi in action was very trippy :D
-
Wonderful thread! It makes it difficult resisting for much longer before placing a big order for Hydra miniatures.
-
Wonderful paint jobs!
Shame that skimmer isn't available any more as it looks very cool.
Can we have some photos of different angles please?
-
My round 3 LPL entry, "Planet of the Worm Men" included some more figures from Hydra and another Pulp Alley skimmer.
The Worm Men are stock, the woman is a 'Valkeeri Leader' with a headswap from Statuesque. As before the skimmer is OOP and from Pulp Alley. I included a rearview of the skimmer as requested many months ago ;)

-
Lovely soft colour scheme. Great work.
-
Love the skimmers ! As they are not available at the mo maybe I have to scratch some as civilian vehicles for my 40k world.
-
That chick is a beauty!
But my vote have to go to Earhwormmen of Mars :>
-
New releases by Hydra, the 'Mind Slaves' for the Valkeeri faction.

Curse those Valkeeri for objectifying the poor fellows like that.
-
Lovely painting. I never thought I'd type this: I really like what you've done with the skin tones, particularly the knees lol
-
They're great figures, and wonderful pjs. Top stuff.
-
Those are some nice minis and nicely painted! Well done!
-
Thanks all, appreciated.
Lovely painting. I never thought I'd type this: I really like what you've done with the skin tones, particularly the knees lol
lol thanks, I think some of the value transitions on the knees are on the harsh side.
I've never been a 'knee guy' ;)
-
Love it, I just love it. Specially your painting and colour choices.
-
Hydra has released their new Empire of Marduk "Princess Azeemah", which I had painted for them a couple of months ago. Fun mini to paint!

-
A wonderful figure and an even better paint job. That is a very tempting line of figures.
-
Beautiful job Matt. Yes, this genre is terribly tempting! Must resist... o_o
lol
-
Lovely work 8)
-
Excellent paintjob on a very nice figure. It's a shame Hydra Miniatures aren't the easiest to get hold of in the UK. They're very often out of stock at Wargames Emporium.
-
Thanks all :)
The Hydra Valkeeri were miniatures I purchased for no reason in particular, other than they looked great and would be fun to paint. Here I am now with dozens of Hydra Retro Raygun miniatures and three factions (still need to paint some robots)!
Bummer about the limited availability in Europe. I can mention it to the guy who runs Hydra, for what its worth.
-
I for one would love to see what you do with painting up the Robot Legion, by far my favourite faction. Your paintjobs are spectacular!
-
A cracking paint job on a lovely sculpt!
:-*

I would love to see your take on those too.
:)

You always seem to nail these minis with your awesome style!
She's a beauty! :-*
-
Wow, I really wish someone did these for 15mm!
Dan
-
So much to love in this thread.... but the Imperial figures, especial the Princess are sublime.
-
This is a wonderful example of the Pulp genre. Simply beautiful work. :-* :-*
-
Thanks all :)

Looking forward to seeing your robots, they're a great looking set of figures (and incidentally the ones I'd like to get). If you do happen to get a chance to mention it, you never know!
Cheers

It has been a while, but Hydra sent me some of their upcoming releases for painting... Belus, High Magus of Marduk and some Dragonmen, all for the Imperial Faction of the Retro Raygun game.

Great painting, especially on the “Treens”.
-
Excellent! The top figure is fantastic
-
That is a cool looking force you got there. Loving the Retro Raygun minis and your paint jobs!
-
Cracking job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Fantastic paint work there. Looks great.
-
Gorgeous work mate!
-
Always loved the Retro Raygun idea and aesthetic. Not many good figure lines out there, but Hydra keeps knocking it out of the park. Especially when coupled with your awesome paint work.
Great job all the way through this thread!
-
Wonderful work Doctor. I have to say, the Belus figure with that staff and the colours you have chosen for him makes me want to pick him up for my Haradrim.
-
Thanks everyone :)
Great painting, especially on the “Treens”.
Not going to lie, I hadn't heard of Treens before :)
I'll have to do more digging into that franchise!
Wonderful work Doctor. I have to say, the Belus figure with that staff and the colours you have chosen for him makes me want to pick him up for my Haradrim.
As I was working on that guy I was thinking in terms of 40K, either a Navigator or Astropath, or some sort of elementalist in fantasy. Hadn't even considered LotR but I can even see that. Hydra minis run a bit tall fyi!
-
I enjoy coming across random challenges and contests on Instagram. They often prompt me to paint a mini that has been sitting around for years. This time it was the "Fabulous February Females" challenge.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjzI8iRycz2nNxXar0XE_tJgZjK4Z3yMmJYSOXr4ab5RHW6e_zNqGvi11T7EG633TVl2r8jZyhEHX3U2Wui67leu9nBv9gED11gzpifCVRVkZ3aZ2_a9Db8QQt7BAGxjzVhMbljakgpuyc60l_33tcONGNnNFb0jF7Bqn7gXixJMVufnLsV8GVqXHG5=s1600)
I have dozens of cool female miniatures in the queue, so it was hard to pick. I settled on 'Jalara' from Tin Man Miniatures. She is from their Barsoom style setting... which usually implies scant clothing. Not sure if she is a proxy for a character from the John Carter series.
I also painted up the latest miniature from Hydra, the leader of the Imperial Faction... Marduk.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhUZWt7MJlW5L48eZ_Ej4HwqXfoVA9jTzvWQYXUJXvHE1Zhcf0pF1k8Oz_uwbCDgauPUHnfm8wvmG0L3mObCtwItfjRuiFIh5frIbo_9MwMrTE_iE5BJxTOkGZesQ2OJRScm5aoF4DOnio3RKVhobR4Aw56GBc1KVb4cfLQRmiFdYVGdvz9AVB2kEJF=s1200)
-
Magnificent work as always Matt. The skin tones contrasted with the blacks are really fantastic.
Do you over paint the tufts you use or are the ones on Jalara that color out of the box?

Thanks!
I picked up some 'Alien Tufts' a couple months ago from GamersGrass. Kinda neat but they don't fit very many of my projects ;)

True. But for Star Wars or Martian landscapes those would work nicely.
-
Very cool 8)
-
Looking good!
-
Very nice.
-
Stunning :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Great paintjobs, as always.
-
Beautiful ,I particularly like the Jalara miniature :-*
-
I like Marduk especially. Great work on the blacks and the skin tones.

Khurasan Miniatures has released a range of sci-fi aliens in conjunction with Hydra, who developed rules for their use in the Retro Raygun game. Here's a few pictures, with more examples on my blog.

-
Great looking force! And not just these, the entire project is superb, just went through it.
-
Great paint jobs - a very vivid choice of colours :)
-
Epic stuff. :o
-
Well, THAT explains why I wanted to buy those figures the moment I saw them on the Khurasan Miniatures site! They were painted by you, Matt!! lol They certainly chose their painter for their sample set well.
The other ones are awesome, as well. I miss the Lead Painters League and oggling over your entries each week... :'(
Mike Demana
-
Appreciated. my fellows.

lol thanks man. Khurasan asked me to do it to make sure they tied in with the other Hydra stuff.
Even if the LPL was going I'm pretty sure I don't have the time to do it!
-
The figures look great and your paintjob is fantastic
-
There are those who paint and stun the onlookers...
Then there are folk like me who've just given up and will try to make do with cast-off Heroclix... lol
That said, I just noticed the Badoon, who looks a proper 30's space villain.
Don't worry. I'm sure he'll never see the same table top as yours. ;)
Doug
-
Awesome pjs, and I love all these pulp sci fi figs.
Your work does a great job of promoting the retro raygun stuff, but I must resist, the last ting I need is another project.
Still, great eye candy, keep it coming.
-
wonderful painting on great figures.
