Title: Show us your dungeons
Post by: beefcake on July 14, 2016, 08:25:04 AM
Well I just received Into the Breeding Pits and have been skimming through the rules and was wondering what others were going to use for their dungeon system. I'll kick it off with my modular dungeon I made out of polystyrene insulation boards.

More cavern like than dungeon. It has easy access points onto the board for starting the game and retrieving loot.
I showed a WIP of this a year or so ago.

I'm making a similar modular set, though with variation in the size of pieces (which is a wonderfully terrible idea: I need to make twice as many bits).

Its early, days, but the pieces look like this:

Modular tilesets are a right pain to build. :(

Very cool. Love the tiles on the floor and all the small details you have :)

I use Mage Knight 3d dungeons.

Do you have a link to your WIP thread for this.  I'm interested in possibly doing something similiar for otherworld skirmish

@zellak

Funnily enough I was eyeing up those Mageknight dungeons myself.

I’d have wound up doing the same thing as I’m now with those though. I.e. glueing a load together,  covering the gaps and adding more details. …Which would be an undue amount of work.

Is there alternative patterns for the walls? I was noticing that the cobbles are the same on every piece. You could change the patter with milliput and paint it over, but I suspect that’s way too much effort considering the purpose of those things.

…Which given that’s my own take on them, is probably why I’m making my own. 

There's a few good threads here on this board for modular dungeons. Not to put other's down, but Jacques' one looked amazing (pity he lost the pictures for the last parts)

I use the Terra-Blocks 'Old School Dungeon Set' for Frostgrave, we've had quiet a few games using it at the club with just the basic rules.

Early days, but I'm making walls out of bits of grey packing foam that come my way every now and then.

Either ripped to look something like natural rock...

...or cut to look like stone slabs.

Might need to get a different gaming mat for underground stuff too.

JP1885 - those look pretty neat. How do they stand up to game-play? Do they get bumped or shifted easily, given the light weight?

More by luck than judgement, they 'stick' to my gaming mat, which is a Ceri Designs felt mat, in almost a velcro type way (if that makes sense).
This type of foam (no idea what it's called) takes undercoat spray reasonably well and stiffens up quite nicely once it's applied.

Some very nice work!

…which make me wonder, do figures in Frostgrave need to be based on specific sizes bases?

I’ve painted some "floor tiles" on small wood panels to expand the dungeon I’m (will be) able to build with my Dwarven Forge tiles I bought on their first Kickstarter.

I ask because both the tiles I’ve done and the Dwarven Forge have a 1" square basic design.

The one Wyrmalla showed looks much better though.
In hindsight I would use MDF or something similar to mount the bolystyrene on instead of more polystyrene. It would make them more durable and easier to store.

Those walls look great JP

Nope, use whatever size you like :)

Very nice work! I'm considering investing in the Dwarven Forge prepainted dungeons and caverns.

[Edited for grammar: I originally wrote "the the" instead of "in the".  ;D

@ Wyrmalla

All the wall tiles are the same, never really thought about it, so not a problem really.

Got it for playing Basic/Expert D&D campaign   where all the characters were Drow rebels. (1986 rules...the ones we still use..aye, we are that old. )

For those who play with basic rules, does the structure of the dungeon have an influence on the game ? I mean big rooms are better or a maze with a lot of corridors or even a mix ? What appen with the line up of bands ? shooters are obsolete ?

We will be using my modular dungeons made from Ikea boxes

from these...

to these

I have three sets made up so far but have not posted as yet.

Plus it appears the cave idea is also practical...

I was lucky enough to have the cash to back the DF dungeon kickstarter:

Here are some pictures of a three player game of Frostgrave back in February.

Thanks to my friend who posted the pictures Golgfag1.

We encountered a number of situations not  least of which Wall becomes an incredibly effective spell in confined areas. Looking forward to seeing if any are resolved in the new book.

From memory the Wall spell is less effective underground!

The spell dissolve more easily and can be destroyed by fighting it!

disolves on 15 instead of 17 or something like that. And you can attack it.

The plastic figure sets come with (IIRC) 25mm round bases so that's what I use for my human sized figures.  If it doesn't fit on that, though, I just use whatever size round base works.

Here are some pictures of the "floor tiles" I’ve done… bad pictures as usual, sorry. Each square are 1". The first tile was done as a hospital floor for last LPL round. As I said in a previous entry, these are intended as links and corridors between Dwarven Forge "rooms"

that pics was taken in our first underdark party.
2 wizards (witch vs Necromancer).
We try the traps rules (including the optional rules of treasure with trap)
Was fun!
